I'm such an active film watcher that I absolutely HATE having anyone around me when watching a film or series. I need to be alone to cry, scream and complain while experiencing what the characters go through.
I do this with books, I use to be able to read in front of people or anywhere but now I need to let out my reactions or talk aloud when a character is being stupid asf. It makes the reading enjoyable even if it’s not the best literature
Yes I agree hahaha I mean I enjoy watching movies with my family and friends but its really different, if its gettinf confusing or the plot is complex watching with other people is great bwcause you come up with theories etc but regarding my emotions, when I'm alone I FEEL the movie much more. For example there is a Korean Netflix series called "My country the new age" and it's just amazing and while I watched it I cried so so much but now that im rewatching it with my parents I maybe had a tear in my eye but didn't cry a river like I did when I was alone so yea lol I prefer watching movies and shows on my own as well hahahaha

Jason Statham, I love your videos. This is the kind of content people should spend more of their time consuming as opposed to passively watching reality tv. Keep up the good work. I love it.
Im an active watcher cause I'm also a writer! So watching how the story flows in the movie, character dialogue, bg music, etc etc really helps me and I'm fascinated about the whole production! There are movies where I'm a passive watcher though it's mostly for movies I've already watched and know I enjoy. I have a longgggggg list of movies and shows I wanna watch but I don't have forever so I do look up reviews and such to help filter them out.
Me too. Now that I actually know how to take a restorative break, rather than just vaguely knowing that my "breaks" are not very effective, I might be able to break better, at least. Speaking of which, maybe I should look at taking a break now... and an actual break too, not just a fake "break" where I spend just as much energy as I would doing something else on browsing and responding to comments and similar.
Same. I work with kids. So at work I am very engaged. But I am also engaged with every other aspect of my life. Which leaves me burned. I really have to learn to manage it more and as he said > take real breaks. All the videos are still input. No rest there.
It was pretty damn awesome. This is the first of Joey's videos that I came across, and that part really hooked me and got me paying attention. If you know how to communicate that intuitively and smoothly with your audience, your opinions and the information you're relaying are probably well worth some time and consideration. And gad damn was that ever proven correct.
I've been telling my friends they're overstimulating their brains for a while now. Using ur phone to avoid boredom isnt healthy. We need boredom to refresh our minds
XiGoat That doesn’t make much sense, it’s like saying “Life has no meaning without death,” it’s completely false, life itself is meaning enough to keep living. But it doesn’t matter how much someone is “overstimulating” their brain, they still have to stop and sleep, and sleeping is a way for most people to think. So stop being such an asshat on your high horse spouting dumb boomer bullshit like how you have friends and how “TECHNOLOGY BAD, OOGA BOOGA” is the greatest thought ever thunk before and get your bitch ass in the 21st century.
It doesn't have to be at a 90° angle, but your head/neck should be aligned with your spine to prevent damage to your body. I usually have my upper body propped up with pillows.
The way I look at it, I'd rather spend a half hour looking for a quality movie to watch than just wing it constantly and end up wasting 1 1/2-2+ hours on shit everytime. Especially if you've already seen the top stuff on netflix and have to start rolling the dice.
Most of the time, I spend so much time trying to find the movie and reading reviews that I end up not having any time to actually watch one. I'm like pathologically indecisive. When I go to a restaurant with people, I need to look up the menu in advance so we can all eat at a reasonable time

This is so true! Now we tend to use our breaks by browsing on our phones or digital devices which results in us being constantly switched on or distracted and therefore taxing ourselves furthermore. We really should take real breaks, and give ourselves time to rest and perhaps slow down, be still and think about our lives more deeply.
The Self-Worth Habit oh definitely!! If we did everything actively we wouldn’t survive. I think he’s just trying to say that passive activity isn’t the most restful, but it’s also completely subjective.
Yeah, but I guess not everyday. There are tv shows that you can passively watch for sure. Lifestyle shows and such. Even this video, you kinda watch it passively when you are browsing through the comment section.
I don't think passive engagement is good for everything. One thing I hate the most is meeting up with friends or a date at a restaurant or something and have them be passively engaged the entire time on their phone and not be able to perform a conversation. Passively engaged when appropriate at home is nice, in public on a frequent basis with certain people or situations...no, not at all.
I'd say I'm in-between these two groups. It depends on my mood and other circumstances. Though, in the past 2 years, I find it hard to push myself to commit to 2 hours of pretty much anything.

@@DolphinGirl826I usually tell them to text me the info unless I'm talking to some company or something. It's good to have written proof of agreements, even if it's just "let's meet at [place and time]".
I had the same thing until I got a chance to practice last year as part of a board function in a ngo I volunteered for. My job as PR forced me to speed up my email process and improve the efficiency of partner meetings. After a while you realize what you are/were doing wrong. Here are some tips based on my experience: - try to create your own frameworks/templates for emails. After a while you'll unconsciously give that structure to each of your mails, after which you only have to 'fill in the blanks'. The more mails you send the easier this becomes. - during a meeting or phone call, keep notes! Once the discussion is over, run through your notes and recapitulate what has been said. Your conversation partner can then confirm or help you complete the conclusion of that discussion. Use these notes afterwards to process everything in your calendar or task list. - keep documentation on anything that requires effort to remember. This way you take the load of your memory. Many useful platforms exist, or you can use paper. - not many people care about receiving a perfectly sentenced email (unless maybe when making a first impression on potential clients/partners). Once the conversation is running, I usually prefer to keep things short and powerful rather than working hours to write a literary masterpiece. This makes it easier to get to the point.
@@jefmasereel4956 well I just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to share your advices and experience here. It's actually useful especially for non-experienced people like me.
I mean isn’t this two different ways everyone watches movies? I really need the sound of people talking in the background so I’ll throw stuff on while I’m tired or busy around the house but when it’s a movie I want to see I’m actively engaged. I don’t really know people who are only one way or the other.
When I watch a movie, I don't like to do anything else. I can throw on music in the background, but movies are not music. They're foremost a visual medium, which requires active engagement. If you don't want to actually _watch_ a movie, then don't have it playing idly. Stick to music. Movies, with the lights, colors, and movement coupled with dialogue and music, are basically overstimulation when you're in such a passive state, which is why it's draining. Edit: Just wanted to add that I think people have adapted to overstimulation, which is why attention is so poor nowadays. You can't be actively overstimulated for a long time, so you mentally "check out" after a while
Obviously I'm engaged in the movie the first or second time I watch it, but if I need something to have on in the background while I'm doing something, I play a movie I've already watched.
Being a student with adhd doing an online semester is a great starting point lol There is nothing that doesn't require a lot of effort and attention :/
Sometimes I hate it when a passive movie watchers ask me for movie recommendations... No matter how good the movie that i recommend, they just like "yeah that's ok" and i was like "dammmnnn just OK?.... Realllyy?.... Did u really watch it?.... Bro!?" 😑
You’re most likely not - we should breath in using the muscles lower down, near your stomach. Most people breath in using the higher muscles in your upper chest, which means the lower parts of your lungs aren’t being utilised for gas exchange to the extent that they should be.
Yeah if I'm hanging with someone and they're showing me this super cool new anime they found I tend to almost fall asleep before the first episode is over but occasionally I'll come across a gem and be completely immersed in it. Hit or miss yuh 💦💦
Lol this is true, I put on a series that I don't need to focus on to get the gist whilst playing games on my phone. If the series requires thinking and analysis, I often watch it actively.
There are a lot of people out there who just mindlessly parrot self-help garbage on their channels. You're clearly an exception, every topic that you cover seems like something you've personally tried out and tried to understand. That makes your advice a lot more genuine. Good luck with making the channel your fulltime job!
Dude, I've only watched two of your videos but I can already tell you have great content. Subscribed! 7:00 btw that sounds a lot like the "flow state", when you are fully engaged and focused in one task and forget about everything else. That's when you get the deep work done, but it's becoming harder and harder to reach that state this days since smartphones and social media continuously interrupt our lives and destroy our ability to focus. For myself I've found that I need a huge "activation energy" to get to that flow state, kinda like a energy gap that I need to surpass, but once I've passed those first 30 minutes of work, I can work for literally hours focused on my task.
Make it a mix of reddit and a big review source like rotten tomatoes n etc because you have general audience opinion and actual reviews and you know if theyre both bad its a no
I can relate to this. I always have a list of classic films that I want to watch someday in the back of my head, but can never settle on which one to watch at any given point.
I've literally spent all day in comment sections. I have no idea how I can spend all day web browsing and do nothing else. I am just not engaged in most of the entertainment out there.

I whole heartedly agree with your message. I realized this during this semester where, in the past, I would usually be on my phone on social media or watch youtube videos in between my breaks and come to class feeling more tired than before. Now this semester, I would meditate or sit outside in a quiet area and just observe what's around me. This has helped out tremendously, I have way more energy now throughout my schedule and I don't feel so burnt out every single moment of my day.

I've watched 3 of your videos so far and I just wanted to mirror another comment mentioning how you aren't saying "this is how I live, be healthy me", but instead saying, "I struggle with these issues too, this is what I do to solve them" It just makes your videos so much more genuine and I love that about your videos. Subscribed, Pressed the Bell, thank you for your great work!
*_You read my mind._* I was just thinking that's a weird title Edit: but if i think about, if we analyze all movies we watch there are probably so many life lessons we could learn
@Better Tomorrow I think it's more about the mindset than the events happening in the movies. Like beeing kind and trying your best to be a genuine good person than fighting aliens and rescuing the world. Because yeah, many events are probably never going to happen and simply unrealistic
@@imposter6935 well then it really depends on how unrealistic the movie's theme or message is. Mostly you're right, it can go reeealy unrealisic in certain points
Depends a lot on several factors: 1. Am I with other people? 2. Is it a movie I actually want to be watching? 3. Did I put it in as background purposefully? If I am with others and I do actually want to be watching the movie, no other things distract me, nor do I seek out those other things. I like to enjoy movies that I enjoy without being distracted by other things. Phones irritate me under these circumstances. If 2 is the case, I'm generally not going to *avoid* distractions if they come up. But that doesn't mean I'll seek them out. In regards to 3, sometimes I'm alone, and I have other things that need doing, say, papers to grade, but I don't want it to be quiet and I'm too inclined to sing along to the music I'm in the mood to listen to. So, throw a movie in so that it's not quiet. Not for the purpose of watching it.
Flexing, means to show off. It’s a reference to men that have muscles, when they flex them to demonstrate they are better than you. Or they want to get attention, and credit for it and want to impress people.
While true, even he has a finite amount of true willpower what he did was make a routine and routines are easier to follow. It takes willpower to make a routine but once on the road the routine is easier to follow
Impressive every single thing you said in that sentence was wrong, try making a routine where you run 20 miles bike another 20 and lift, thats goggins routine, so just because its a routine its easy? Routines NEVER get easier, infact it gets harder because you need discipline, you need to push through the days where you dont feel like it. Im suprised you got 16 likes on such a bs commeny
I think the title says too little about the juicy content of the video. I was on the margin to click on another video just because i don't watch movies but the video helped me so much anyways
Oh my god this makes so much sense now. Thats why I'm always up and down. Its because I try to put my best effort into everything I do, which leads to mental death later on the day.
Summary for tips: 0: make a list to identify tasks and importance 1: take restorative breaks 2: relax during easy tasks 3: improve your focus during hard tasks 4: remember to be healthy
I do both. There's right times for both of those. I usually always have something on a background but when comes to new movies or tv series - I will watch them with full focus. Or when I noticed that something I'm about to watch while doing some task needs more intense watching; I will put that into a list of movies etc. to watch later when I can focus on it better.
I think you're more affected by the envoriment and social norms placed on being in a theater than having a monetary motivation or incentive. It's like being in a library. Suddenly you're more conscience of the noise you make, and concern yourself a little more than usual about distracting or bothering others.
@@StateAlchemist7 I'd also argue that the movie theatre is simply more engaging. Larger screen, louder noise, more color, more vivid, less outside distractions than what you're going to get at home. Yes, there are social norms that say you can't pull out your phone or else it will distract others but that's also the less distraction point.
When you were mentioning things that take little energy, once you said "sweeping the floor" I had an instant thought of "oh I love a good floor sweeping session". I have never really thought before that I might actually enjoy floor sweeping, until this moment. Come to think of it, floor sweeping at work is like a low key meditation break.
Whenever I work from home office and need a break, I usually do some of the chores, like I wash the dishes or do the laundry or something. I would have to do them anyway, after the work, and I would be annoyed. But when I do them during a work break, it's actually kinda relaxing cause I switch from the creative intellectual process to completely basic manual task, my body gets a little excercise and my brain takes a little breather. :D

IKR! You know that feeling when you try to recommend something but they never get around to watching it so you invite them to watch it with you? But when watching the actual show they turn out to be passive watchers? It annoys the fuck out of me
I was trying to explain this to someone one time when I was recommending a movie to watch but they didn't even understand what I was saying. When someone been watching movies passively all their life they don't even understand the difference it seems, and of course, they didn't like the film because they missed out on 75% of the detail. Cinema remains though as probably one of the only formats where you kinda forced into paying attention with min distraction, unless you in the back row with your gf or something lol.
Krazykov I think with the modern day information overload people have much shorter attention spans. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t cinemas used to have intermissions for their films? I honestly need that 😅
@@oliviabird9737 Haha yeah, well for movies that are 3hours long like Lord of the Rings they def should have intermissions lol. But they probably won't do it because some people don't like it, it brakes the immersion I guess.
Trying to explain it in person is definitely going to be less effective, I think most people would see it as kind of condescending to just start talking about "the way they watch movies." Might be better to try to actually get them engaged in the movie in a meaningful way, rather than tell them they're watching the movie the wrong way. Maybe they didn't even like the movie, maybe they only payed half attention because they disliked it but didn't want you to think that they did. As for the intermission thing, that is why I never even bother going to the theater, unless I'm with a friend or two. I get so uptight sitting in the same seat for 2-3 hours, and when I'm watching a movie at home I can pause the movie to get a snack, use the bathroom, etc.
I would watch shows with a friend of mine and her daughters, and I'd comment on something and notice that I was the only one watching the show/movie. It was their show, and I was the only one with my eyes not buried in a phone or laptop. The strangest part about this is that they would object if I wanted to turn the TV off. When they noticed me turning the TV off, they would say "We're watching that!". So I would test them on what just happened in the show and they'd get it quite wrong, and they'd still think that they were watching the show sufficiently. Once, one child told me that these are the kinds of shows that you can watch like this. So I asked them to watch something more stimulating. Still couldn't get through to them. BTW, they would rewatch entire shows with multiple seasons, like F.R.I.E.N.D.S.. Not sure if that means something.
I feel like I am putting way too much mental energy into pretty much everything, just in case. Even walking the dog, I just don't want him to wander too far. Making pasta, I need to put the just the right amount of sauce. My posture might be pretty good, but I am so focused on it, that I become pretty much stuck in that one posture.
I think that's a good you're being mindful about what your doing. When I study or exercise my mind wanders into other random things and it's annoying. Where as when I watch a movie, I have full focus on it. That's why I guess I like watching movies a lot. It's like I'm in a meditative state and I feel so refreshed after it even if it 2 in the morning

I had the same thing until I got a chance to practice last year as part of a board function in a ngo I volunteered for. My job as PR forced me to speed up my email process and improve the efficiency of partner meetings. After a while you realize what you are/were doing wrong. Here are some tips based on my experience:
- try to create your own frameworks/templates for emails.
@@GhostSamaritan for company stuff it's usefull too to have an email to keep a trace.

@Better Tomorrow I think it's more about the mindset than the events happening in the movies. Like beeing kind and trying your best to be a genuine good person than fighting aliens and rescuing the world. Because yeah, many events are probably never going to happen and simply unrealistic
guess who no it’s about the themes you can pull from the film and the meaning behind certain aspects
@@imposter6935 well then it really depends on how unrealistic the movie's theme or message is. Mostly you're right, it can go reeealy unrealisic in certain points
Depends a lot on several factors:
Everytime i go watch a movie in the cinema it’s like i’m falling in love again. It’s like every aspect of the cinema stimulates me...

@@StateAlchemist7 I'd also argue that the movie theatre is simply more engaging. Larger screen, louder noise, more color, more vivid, less outside distractions than what you're going to get at home. :D
You are one of the few content creators who have actually convinced me to subscribe by asking at the end of their video. Keep it up, man! Looking forward to your future videos, and I hope you achieve your goal of creating these amazing videos full time.
Cut the things you don't need and you don't enjoy doing. That will save you time and energy, then use the time you alloted to those activities to your family.
My first thought, what if you don't enjoy your family. >_
@@hexadecimal5236 Take it in stride. I have to see many of my family members in moderation... lol
@@hexadecimal5236 if you ended up with a family you don't enjoy you fucked up on a way deeper level
@@sanny8716 You make it sound like it's his fault for choosing the family. That's not how life works pal
Towards the end of the video, you should do a quick recap of the points made during the video. It would help with retention.
Thanks.
This hit home. Being a firefighter, and not being able to manage my energy, attention, and willpower ruined my relationship and had lasting effects even after I quit. Now my relationship is gone, and so is my position at my former career.
I've read couple books on self improvment, well power, discipline, success in life, meditation etc. and what you mentioned in this clip kinda sums it all up, in a less scientific but more intuitive way. I appreciate your work in this video and I'm subscribing for more :)
Added a new sub!! I’ve tried explaining this! Group #2! I often watch alone just to avoid the passive watcher 🤦🏽♀️
They are not comfortable with the quiet and their brain needs constant input, sadly i have become the same.
“Tom” is just Adam Sandler’s role in Click
That’s what I was thinking-
😂
When he said "Breathing air", my breathing went to manual and I couldn't stop thinking about my breathing.
yo you need to be passively engaged with your breathing man.
"My breathing went into Manual"
Idk why this made me laugh so hard, maybe cause I walk around equipment all day at my job
you did it to me now!
Oh thank bro.
Now i'm manual too lol
make sure your tongue is positioned properly in your mouth and that you're also manually blinking
"Dear Unimportant Client"
Lmao Id love to see the shocked face of that client
This is helpful to me. Thank you.
I did not expect all this from the title. Well done.
Walter Mullinax facts.
From the title, I thought he was going to tell me my posture sucked and my life is over.
