9 Hurtful Things Parents Tell Teens

  • How to deal with teens? Being a parent isn’t easy, especially when your child reaches puberty. And adolescence is no walk in the park for teens either! That’s why this can be a turbulent time for both parties involved. What can make the situation better and help you both come out with your relationship intact is if parents avoid saying the following things to their kids.
    Do you know, for example, that what looks like a harmless compliment can actually do some real psychological damage in a teen? Dr. Timothy Gunn, a licensed clinical psychologist, says that these sorts of compliments put extra pressure on your child, making them afraid that if they do something wrong, you'll see that they're not so smart, talented, and pretty after all. As a result, they often avoid risky situations because of a fear of failure!
    TIMESTAMPS:
    #1: “Don't do that!” 0:51
    #2: “As long as you live under my roof, you'll follow my rules!” 1:37
    #3: “Come on, don't be sad!” 2:31
    #4: “How could you do this to me?” 3:26
    #5: “Find your passion.” 4:17
    #6: “You're getting kinda fat.” 4:59
    #7: “You're so smart!” 6:06
    #8: “What's wrong with you?” 7:17
    #9: “Why can't you be more like...?” 8:10

    SUMMARY:
    - Whenever your teenager proposes another crazy scheme to you, don't yell “No!” right away. Just offer them another idea with a casual “And what about...?”
    - “You live under my roof and you’ll follow my rules!” The first thing that’ll go through a kid’s head after that is, “Great, then how can I get outta here?!” During this period, they want to make their own decisions.
    - This is a time when their hormones are doing all kinds of crazy things to their body and emotions. That’s why you should be their safe haven, where they can come for support and understanding. And, of course, your door is always open, the loving parent that you are!
    - Gregg Chapman, a psychologist and clinical manager at Strategic Psychology, explains that teenagers rarely do something out of a sense of obligation to their parents. And that's why this argument will most likely not work on your child.
    - Jeff Leiken, a motivational expert and author of “Adolescence Is Not a Disease,” says that the pressure to find this one thing that they would love to do for the rest of their lives only makes teens more stressed and anxious of making the wrong choice.
    - Weight is a sensitive topic for pretty much everyone, especially teenagers. This is an extremely confusing time for your child since their body is changing, and they don't really understand what's happening. Almost every teenager becomes self-conscious during this time, and they certainly don't need any comments about their looks from others, you included.
    - Just speak honestly and directly about everything that’s concerning you, making sure that they understand that it’s their behavior you’re bothered by, not them as a person. This method will help you meet each other halfway and keep your relationship open and trusting.
    - If you wanna find common ground with your teen, remember one thing: never ever compare them to somebody else. It just hurts and slowly but surely ruins your relationship with your child.

    How would you describe your relationship with your parents?

      My relationship with my dad is filled with hatred and anger from years of pain, and what I found out recently was mental and emotional abuse. The best word to describe him is "narcissist"
      The relationship between my mother and me is still pretty unsteady, but she has made an effort to mend the relationship, even speaking my love languages.
      In a nutshell, it depends on which one you're talking about.

      @Elio i see
      you sound like you dont know the weight of the meaning behind "hormones" and thats why you feel small
      remind your parents ( especially mom ) that 'just' those hormones make every women bleed every month till they are around 48 age
      those hormones are also the reason behind the big stuff like love ( oxytocin )
      and in males
      testosterone is the reason of countless history of wars blood and violence cuz this hormone promotes unnecessary aggression
      tell your parents that and they might consider these "hormonal" behaviours and treat you better

    2 things my parents say that hurt me are:
    "You need to be more social". Even though I'm an introvert and it's not that easy.
    "Look at your friend, she knows how to behave and makes lots of friends". Comparing us to other kids doesn't motivate us, it makes us feel worthless.

      Introverts are a certain way, they can’t just “make friends”. It’s not that easy. Introverts are anxious and non social people. Back then almost everyone was an extrovert BECAUSE they had no choice. But now, we can choose to be social or not.

And quite honestly, these are so obvious and find it fascinating that in this day and age where so many parenting books are available and so much information in general is available parents still speak to their kids this way. 'You dissappointed me very much.'
    A phrase that litterally drains my soul, because I cannot do anything to end the situation IN THAT MOMENT, and I have to live with that horrible feeling of hurting my mom, or not being able to talk to her for a little painful while.
    I know that EVERYONE demands A LOT from the parents, especially their children, that don't understand them... I just think that parents should expect at everything from their kids, even if they are smart, quiet, etc., so the parents can overcome easily or avoid completely that feeling of dissappointment.
    I mean, everyone makes mistakes or bad things that are usually not in their behaviour, but it happens to everyone, the parents can talk with their teens about that, in order to understand the reason of their imprevisible actions.

    • @ClaireRader
      @ClaireRader 5 лет назад +2

      Adi Adi I agree if they are never telling you when they are proud of you. I know some parents always communicate the negative and never good. But loving parents who have good balance on support and encouragement are the best people to learn how to handle disappointment from. Better that you learn from someone who also loves you even though they are disappointed than from your future employer whom you are counting on to have money to pay for bills and food but could always get someone else to do your job (same apples to customers if you have your own business). Learning how to handle it and grow from it will make you stronger in the long run.

    • @AdiAdi-sh6pi
      @AdiAdi-sh6pi 5 лет назад +1

      @@ClaireRader They always tell me when they are proud or dissappointed, but I know that they love me VERY much, that's why their feelings are so strong. And that's why I feel so bad when I hear that phrase, because I know I hit in their love, I did not even thought at that (eventually I just thought at myself and I made something bad, like, always going to bed late, just because I want), and they will keep that feeling inside their souls for some time. My parents are optimistic and support me, but my mom is very sensitive, and she tells me dirrectly if I dissappointed her; honestly, I never heard my dar saying that to me, but however, I think he would find another way to make me know it.

    Im legit crying rn. The " your so smart" one really got to me. I really wanna become a singer but am (not bragging I swear) really smart too. Growing up in the home that I am in everyone wants me to become a doctor but I want to do something that I love. But I dont know if this is the safe way. Another one that spoke to me is the find your passion one. I already know what my passion is its just that idk if singing will make me successfull😭

    Most of that phrases where told to me by my mother 😅 specially the comparison. Maybe that is the reason why I can't trust and forgive her quickly. 💔

    The last one really make me mad,because they always compare me,even when i said "don't compare me to others because we are different " and what hurts the most is,they don't know that it's hurting us when they compare us to others.This make me feel that i'm not enough for them and i secretly cry because it really hurts😭😭😭 and i keep my feelings to my self because i feel like they would do nothing about it or they will not understand what i'm going through.Sometimes i just want to be in another family,A family that will ask me if i'm okay,A family that will try really hard to understand me,A family that always make me feel soo loved and A family that will always make me happy.I feel like i'm DEPRESSED and no one cared.😭😭😭😭😭(I WISH THAT I HAVE A FRIEND LIKE ME)

      YESSSSSS EXACTLY! Parents these days have no clue what so ever! Teens are going through puberty and so they are very emotional, so there is no reason for parent to tell their teen to stop being a baby when they are very emotional!

    If i show this video to my parents they will certainly say « How could you do this to us, we are not bad parents » and then i will show down my emotions like always, smile, hug them and then say « of course mom and dad, i love you , you are the best» and go to my bedroom to cry silently........sad reality........😓🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳.

      Try and do your best to stop this game. Find the right words and explain the whole thing to your parents. One at the time or together is ok.
      What they do is mild manipulation. They probably don't have bad intentions.
      Be calm and sure of yourself. They love you too. 🌞

    I recognize myself in these. It is so true. It breaks the self esteem of a child. So much it could lead to depression, self hatred, low self esteem and fear of failure. As a mother I finally let go of all of these limitations and learned to love myself. I learned it is like this because in the culture I grew up in it is a normal thing to do. It can even get worser at least my parents eventually accepted my choices in work and stuff. So that’s a good thing. I tend to do things differently with my kids. Never project your own insecurity to your own kids. Love yourself and be proud!

    I absolutely love this video. It really shows how teens feel when parents says these type of phrases. I know parents are trying to mold us into a mature person for the real world but, sometimes the things they say, hurts us children. 😁
