Omg, I can't believe it! Šarplaninci are "native" to my country, and the Balkans in general. They are called by the Šar Planina (Planina means Mountain, Planinac means like a Mountain-person). They are a common sight around here, very good shepherd dogs!

My mom's friend got a Šarplaninac because she lived in a forested area with bears (in Slovenia); to keep her safe while she took a walk. I remember we once went on a walk with him, her, my mom and I, and despite it being the first time we met him, the whole walk he would instinctively go ahead of us, check if the coast was clear, then wait till we passed him and check again, over and over, till we came home. He would also very gently shoulder check any of us if we lagged behind to take a pic or something, literally herding us together at all times- he was on the clock! His shoulders were hip-height for me, and I'm not a very short person. His head was easily the size of my arm up to the elbow, if he went on hind legs he would easily reach way above my height - but he was so aware of his size and so gentle. Once he saw the owner hug us, we were automatically adopted and part of his herd forever. I don't know if he's ever taken on a bear, but he has scared wild boars and wolves away, his owner said. Absolutely amazing breed.

If I would ever get a dog, I think I'd want this breed. Unfortunately I'd also have to buy a farm. But I think that's a small price to pay.

Working breeds who have a daily job are the most mellow, happy dogs.
A shepherd doesn't necessarily need a flock to tend, but it does need a job!
A lot of work went into socializing this dog. They are very independent and stubborn in nature.

We had Šarplaninac dog. He was the most gentle giant, but also very protective, especially of my brother and me, as children. Once he bit a man, who made a wrong move towards our mom. Greetings from Serbia. ❤

A Sarplaninac was the first dog I had, growing up in Belgrade! We grew up together, taking the same calcium supplements and enjoying our romps on the banks of the Danube. They're an amazing, highly intelligent, intuitive, utterly loyal breed.

Working dogs, including most sporting dogs such as Labs and Goldens, are the only dogs to have. No complaining, no yapping, no cuff-biting, never in a bad mood, great family dog (particularly for children), etc. People who have these breeds are real dog people. I'm just a little biased, of course. This is a beautiful animal, well-loved and a bit spoiled, I'm sure. :-)
They are generally well behaved, super mild mannered, gentle, aware spacially of their size. They are gentle giants, unless someone threatens their people/herd
This video made me cry. My beautiful Šarplaninac passed away earlier this year at the age of 13. He was the best boy around, he would always get so happy when I would visit back home, he was such a gentle giant, he would tolerate everything even our tiny Maltese mix jumping on him all day long and the kittens playing with his tail. He was the most loving and loyal dog I ever had and I miss him so much! I was very surprised to see this breed in this video, they’re native to Serbia and rarely kept outside of the Balkans!
My condolences on the loss of your pooch. Thirteen is quite a good long life for a large dog, so I can only assume that you gave that doggo a great life. I'm sure he'll be waiting for you at the Bridge.
Šar Mountain is located in North Macedonia and today's Republic of Kosovo! So they are not native to Serbia.

And by the way it is never embarrasing to correct misinformations. The Šar Mountain lies between North Macedonia and Kosovo and is mostly on North Macedonian territory. This dog breed is therefore mainly native to North Macedonia and Kosovo but not to Serbia.

YEEEEEYYYY, finally, Šarac...One of most favorite breeds in Balkan peninsula, or region. They are real angels, soft and gentle, but even with no training, they can instantly become your worst nightmare if you think of harming his flock, aka family. I have one story from my family. My fathers second wife, aka stepmom, had one. And she and her late husband went to the city one day. When they came home, they found open doors to the house, and burglar pinned to the wall, with Šaronja standing on her back feet, targeting his throat. Only when they called police, and calmed her down, she let her guard down. So, be nice to them, and they'll be nice to you.
There are so many more breeds from ex Yougoslavia region, or Balkans if you will. You had croatian shepperd, Šarplaninac, Dalmatian...if would be awesome if there were even more, like tornjak, various versions of herddog (goniči, like istrian, posavski...)
And kraški ovčar:) I must add the one and only Slovenian breed:)

I heard of the one I owned and knew I needed one, we planned to have land but also have other dogs, and children come over often. Also being a dog trainer it was suchh an amazing experience to own such an amazing dog with such a good well rounded temperament. If given the opportunity in the future and with the right lifestyle I 100% want another sarp. I love the stubborness at times and the immense patience and love that they have.

We had Šarplaninec in the family, he was very nice, ran away, and could usually be found at the local kindergarten playing with the children (and didn't want to go home) 😍
Romeo certainly was a gentle giant, and a gentleman as well. It must have been a pleasure to hang out with him once he got outside. He really looked as though he was enjoying your back yard.

Oh my God I grew up with one of these! His name was Urban, and he guarded the village my mom was from! He is one of the reasons I love dogs so much, because he has fought wolves several times; but the moment he would see us kids, he would lie down like a giant rug and let us climb all over him. They are awesome dogs, although they are more high maintenance than people would think and honestly, not city dogs at all.

I see these guys in Croatia often. In Zadar one was so big he had to go on a trailer to get to the vet. He was so massive on the trailer. I'm 6'1. he looked huge to me! Love them, so cute!
I lost it at the lick of approval. He's a perfect angel and a gentleman. I'm glad he gets to live somewhere he can exercise those big bones (and his big shepherd brain!), he looks very healthy and handsome.

He is gorgeous ....we are so proud of our breed ❤❤❤❤ never seen one well behaved mostly because they are used for protection of the house and sheeps and so people dont socialize them much...They are huge....This girl is super brave...❤❤❤

Great dog! He does look a lot like Caucasian shepherd! His owners did a great job of socialising a herd dog to be so tolerant with strangers!
exactly...this is 100% a caucasian...well socialized,but still....
They can look very similar, but Sarplas generally have lighter build and smaller head/muzzle. They are also healthier and their temperament is a lot better than Caucasians, in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of meeting TWO of these lovely dogs on a clients property and they are absolutely lovely, beautiful and kind dogs with a definite undertone of " this is my house and MY family" Very impressive breed!

@InTimeTraveller I don't know, corgi's are high up there next to the German sheperds and huskies. They are always wildin', all dramatic and difficult. I can't blame her for not grooming corgi's too often (though she has 2 or 3 corgi videos to my knowledge). Not sure if there's more in her videos 3 or 4+ years back though.
I had also never heard of this breed, but now I wanna find out more about it, because I fell in love with beautiful, majestic and calm boy.
They are the dogs from my father's homeland. They are the best! Fluffy, funny, endlessly friendly with their family and fierce protectors at the same time. They adore children too. Beautiful dogs.
And don't let his antics with the hose and his good looks deceive you. If you are his owner and you're being attacked he'll use lethal force, I guarantee it.
A mellow fellow that turns into a snarling, flesh ripping fur missile when necessary. What a shame it would be to have a dog like this confined to a small yard, with occasional walks on a leash, because an ill-informed person wanted a cute floofy dog. Working dogs need a purpose in life and are most definitely happiest when they’re on the job.

We were lucky that Bucko - Šarplaninac was living with us for 9 years.
He was not our dog. He was member of our family.
This is dog for kind people with strong mentality. This dog will not accept you and will not listen to you just because you feed him. This is by far the most intelligent dog I have ever seen.
Bucko attacked snake that was approaching my kids in backyard. He gets bitten and died 2 days after.

We have a St. Bernard/Treeing Walker Coonhound mix. We got her when she was 7 years old. She's now 13. The first time we had her groomed, Cleo rested her head on her groomer's shoulder. Big dogs are incredible. Romeo is rather handsome. What a great personality.
Wish I could see the livestock's reaction when he comes home looking and smelling all fancy.
I have four Great Pyrenees so I am used to big dogs. I used to dog sit a pair of Sarplaninacs and they were massive…and the sweetest babies.

Most amazing breed ever! We were so lucky to find our girl, Sophie as a rescue dog. She was also lucky to come to live out in the country with only us to guard from the coyotes. The paw shake is Sophie's only trick--working dogs do not generally see the merit of silly tricks! Love this!

If I would walk down the street and see this face...I would immediately loose speech, so I couldn't even ask the owner if it was okay if I touch him.
I would talk silently to him and him alone. Like reaching out my hand for him to sniff and duck a bit (just a bit).
Finding my speech again, I would ask the owner if I could come by for a play date and to comb his fur😂
Im in love. Reminds me so much of our Newfie that passed a few years ago. He loved going to our groomer and would basically take a nap when she worked on him. And would roll over when asked. And give her slobbery kisses through the whole grooming. Love Romeo.❤❤❤

Romeo is amazing! His owners did such a good job, he's a sweetheart among humans. Sure he's fearsome when he has to his job but he really seems to know the difference.

I've actually seen an lgd get in with young guinea pigs. This huge fluffball curled around the babies, god help anyone who hurt them. They'll guard anything they've been taught is their family

I absolutely LOVE the fact you actually used Š (instead of Sh) when you wrote the name and on top of that had a perfect pronunciation of Šarplaninac. :D I live in Balkans (more precisely Bosnia) and relatively close to the region the breed originates from, so it's not unusual to see these guys around here.

what a gentle giant. my neighbour had one just like it. he would sometimes escape their property and would suddenly appear behind me in our yard. i would get terrified for a second but he never meant me any harm. he was just curious and liked to explore.
This breed hails from my country. They are incredible but, increasingly protective. The name of the breed was no said correctly… but I praise this girl for the amount of time and care she took!!!!
yeah, for English speakers; it's pronounced "shar-pla-ni-na-ts", the "ts" is same as the ending of the word "mats" (materials). Hope this helps!

Šarplaninac (SHAR PLANINATS) is named after the Shar Mountains in Southern Serbia. Shar Mountain Dog, in effect. They are very similar to the Caucasian Ovcharka or Caucasian Shepherd Dog. They shed more in Spring and Fall. Quite a feat to groom them. Very nice job! Thanks for showing us this unusual breed.

I know this breed ,in my youth my friend left his dog for few months in my care ,he was loyal calm ,strong and he defended me one night while walking in an underground passage from three men with bad intentions.He stood on his two legs on one of the men's shoulder ,...they fled faster than speedlight!

Imagine as a full grown man if your job was to wash and groom full grown black bears. From a size standpoint that's basically what this little lady is doing. She got balls of steel.
