I learned my lesson the hard way last Fall, with my Wolf Packs! I had a few days of rain and a little snow while out on a trip. I store my recovery gear and a lot of hand tools and a few electric tools. If I don't end up needing any of that on a trip, the boxes just come off and placed on the shelf in the garage while unpacking from the trip. Much like that last trip in the Fall. I went back out a month or two later and was going to repack a few new items to add to the recovery gear, I found severe mold and rust in all three packs. There was still standing water in two of them, that just happened to be the ones with tools. The few electric tools I pack were completely trashed! It was cheap Harbor Freight Drills and such, but still. . . lesson learned.

I have the pro boxes and the old ones. My pro boxes leak too. And a lot. I tested them by just putting them outside in the rain for two days and there was quite some water inside. The old boxes that are not rated waterproof keep the water out completely because the lid goes over the box instead of sitting inside. I contacted frontrunner and there answer was that they are water resistant and not waterproof. They didn't come up with any solution. I'm glad you guys made this video. People should be aware of the (in my opinion) crapy lids.

Thanks for the honest review. I was considering buying one or two. But , I’ll try to stay away from them.

I use them too. They're the only hard pack/box that have stood the overlanding I do. Many others I've used prior don't even last one trip full of corrugated roads. The Wolf Pack Pros are very tough and I love them for the same reasons you've mentioned in this video. Though I only use mine inside the back of my 4WD. Have you though about mounting them the other way around on your roof rack (the side with latches) facing the front? This could help in better preventing water getting into the pack. I didn't know FR are updating them with plastic latches. I prefer the aluminium latches. So I better get some more while packs with the aluminium latches are still available.

Very informative guys thanks so much! This has changed my mind for changing from the non pro containers. Just an FYI, I don't like watching reviews where both people are talking the same way and the gestures are like your acting and being directed on the shopping channel. Just be yourselves ! :) People desperately need real in this world

I have a Gobi Rack and I find that most places like Home Depot sell a relatively OK case that keeps out water and they fit in the rack nice with a ratchet tie down to hold them down.

Maybe change the orientation of the box on the rack? Turn the sides of the box that has the weak spot to the sides instead of facing forward?

Nice review. Maybe use a tie down strap lengthwise to keep the lid from popping up? Just my two cents.

One design consideration of injection molding is uniform thickness. This means adding more material along that ridge would probably not be possible. However they could design in corrugations or something to increase the stiffness of that edge. Any way you look at it, it’s a oversight in a over-landing application and it should be water tight. Thanks for the review!

Not to mention the costs involved in redesigning mold tools. Can't be an easy expense for a small niche company to eat.

Have you experimented with attaching the boxes to the roof rack where the latches face the front of the rig?

I have a FrontRunner rack and a few of their items. My box leaks as well so it never stays up top. I have room in the back. My roof rack is my biggest disappointment. Someday I may make a review video about it as well. Advertised as ( all aluminum and S.S. Steel ). Less than a year every bolt on the thing is rusty. The bolts I'm most concerned about are the mounding bolts. Rust can make a waterway for water to get inside. When I contacted them they said the rack itself is all aluminum and the bolts are regular steel. The next line said if they included SS hardware the cost would be higher. Not a FrontRunner fan.

@@Frontrunneroutfitters Your website advertises my roof rack as all aluminum and stainless steel. I did contact FrontRunner about the rusty bolts and I was told the bolts are regular steel. Why is it advertised as ALL aluminum or stainless steel? So disappointed.

Better to stick with the regular wolf packs, IMO. Just fill the bottom holes with a little silicone, and it's pretty hard to get any water or dust inside. I looked at replacing a few of my older wolf packs that are showing their age with three new WPP's and the new hi-lids. All the hi-lids were so bowed, you couldn't latch them to the box. Terrible QC.

Wonder if a ratchet strap or strong bungee across the lid would be a reasonable fix for those who already purchased them.

What are you actually saying? It’s not okay, but it is okay to use them? If they leak, there is no value in using them. You do not put camera gear in any kind of box without foam protection inside. Not even on a roof rack. Then one rather go for pelican, or something dust and water proof inside your vehicle. Most Overlanders remove seats to fit camera gear inside the car. I am sorry, but this review is meaningless.

Does Fron Runner claim that the Wolf Pack Pro is waterproof? I was under the impression that they were not and didn't claim to be but I have not looked at them for a while.
