DIY STORAGE TABLE for Overlanding | Front Runner Wolf Pack Box Storage

  • I built this DIY storage table (bar height) for my overlanding adventures. I needed to get a system that was better than bins from Home Depot. So, I made this out of 1x3’s and Front Runner Wolf Pack Boxes. This may look insane, but for me it is an EPIC storage solution! This will get your gear up, and off the ground. This is especially awesome if you have a Jeep and you sleep in it while car camping. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments. (Episode 25 - 12/11/22)
    LEGS:
    1”x3”x4’ = need 4 of them
    SUPPORTS UNDER BOXES:
    1”x3”x40” = need 2 of them (as shown), but go go up to 53” if desired.
    PAINT
    2 cans of black spray paint
    2 cans of clear protectant spray paint
    HARDWARE:
    12 washers, suggest large
    12 screws approx. 1 1/8” long (Just make sure that they fit tightly through the washers and that they are not so long that they go all the way through the supports under the boxes. Do not over tighten, you could crack bottom of box.)
    CARRY CASE:
    1 old sock, or two (One for each end 😂)

    NOTE: Also doing this with just 2 of the Front Runner boxes would be a solid option as well. 😊

    I got to see this awesome storage/table setup in person! If you put silicone on those holes on the inside, they’d definitely be weatherproof but i do understand the ventilation part of it too if that was the intended purpose of those holes. Aside from that, the lids seem to do the job keeping water from rain, snow, ETC. *ding* out of the bins.

    I bought the Wolfpack front runner pro. They seem to be very close, but I noticed a few differences. They don’t have the big holes on the outside to put the corks in. They don’t have holes on the inside of the boxes for drains to put the screws through so I hope to drill those. Do your legs fit a little loose? Mine seem to be loose and I didn’t have to shave off a corner. Maybe the holes are bigger now

    • @TrailNewbie
      @TrailNewbie  Месяц назад +1

      So awesome that you are building them with the new Wolfpack PRO boxes! My legs fit pretty snug in the original Wolfpack. They don’t necessarily need the corks to hold them in, but it’s a nice-to-have to keep them secure. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃

      Great question. The Wolf Pack Pro’s do have a ‘slot’ similar to the original Wolf Pack boxes, BUT I’m not sure of the size of the hole. I believe there is a way, but I have personally not built one with the Wolf Pack Pro boxes, so I can’t guarantee your success.

    • @TrailNewbie
      @TrailNewbie  10 месяцев назад +1

      Well, they just discontinued them on their store. All the sell now are called the Wolf Pack Pro storage boxes. The original Wolf Pack storage boxes is what I used. They can still be found on other websites, but just not on Front Runner’s site. I believe the Wolf Pack Pros are similarly constructed where you could put legs on, but you’d need to drill the holes for corks. To be safe, I’d try to buy the old version online somewhere. 👍🏼

      Yes, your a re 💯 correct. The 1x3’s that I used were 48” right from Home Depot. I didn’t cut them yet, but I’m going to take them down to 42” I think. I’m 6’4” tall, so a little taller is better, but these can be modified to any height - if you make this: make it perfect for you. 😀👏🏼🙌🏼👊🏼 Thanks for the comment and for reaching out! 😀

    • @TrailNewbie
      @TrailNewbie  2 месяца назад

      Ok, I went online to their website and if you scroll through the pictures, the 7th picture shows the Wolf Pack PRO upside down. It has similar cavities on each corner like the original Wolf Pack boxes. I don’t know the size of those openings, but I think/hope it would work the same. If you have Instagram, feel free to message me there anytime for more info. 😃

    • @TrailNewbie

      You know, I think the Wolf Pack Pros have a similar ‘cavity’ at each corner where a leg could be put in. I don’t know the dimensions, but I think there is a solution there. If you can find one in-person check it out. I’ve thought about re-doing mine with the Pros, but TBD if I will or not. Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀

    Good idea - well executed.
    Wouldn't it be handier/less of a PITA to have used a box that is hinged rather than having 4 latches? Seems like having to unlatch & revoke the lid will get really OLD after a stretch...

    • @TrailNewbie
      @TrailNewbie  Год назад +2

      Ya, you’re 100% right. It would. The thing is: getting legs on other boxes like a Roam or something else would be a bit of an engineering feat (no pun intended 🤣). I’ve thought about trying to hinge these lids, I just haven’t figured it out yet. I’d say the main reason I’ve stuck with the Front Runner boxes, is because they ‘nest’ on each other (stack really well interlocking). I’ve now actually reduced the design down to two sets of two that stack in the back of my Jeep. The other main reason I used these boxes is because they are so cheap. $30 each and the 1x3s + hardware were very inexpensive as well. Long-winded answer to your question … the answer is yes, a hinge would be an absolute +++. 😃👊🏼 Thank you for your comment and kind words! Cheers! 👏🏻👊🏼😃👍🏼🙌🏻

    • @TerryManitoba
      @TerryManitoba Год назад +2

      The slots on the side do make it very handy to add legs .
      Didn't"t know FR boxes was so inexpensive - But over the long run (years) paying $30 or $100 per box makes little difference In the long run especially when it adds to ease of use & a pleasure to use kind of thing. (the Getting Old Real Quick is the way I analyze whether I would consider a new product)
