  • Purchased from Ron Baker in 2020 (I think) at the Constantine AOMCI meet. Cleaned carburetor and replaced gear oil and a fuel line. A bit of clean up and carburetor adjustments and it runs well. Still not a happy idler, but I'll continue to work with it.

      Me too. Even though I went through many years with no involvement at all with boats I have always had a fascination with outboards. Thanks for watching!

    Growing up we had a 1961 sport Scott McColloch 27.7 horsepower Bailamatic and offset lower unit. These were the features.
    My father would tell me that sound was manifold pressure. He's still around at 90 .I'll have to inform him this time he was mistaken.
    Thank you for solving the mystery
    Thoroughly enjoy your videos
    Happy Thanksgiving

    Good to see the old Wizard. I also came across a 1967 6 hp. Chrysler made Wizard this spring. Some new seals a good cleaning, some paint and a couple of hand made pins later the thing runs great. Keep the vids coming.

    That bugger's pretty quick! I just picked up a 1962 Fleet Scott 14.1 and I'm having to put a different steering bracket on it, it was broken. I'm actually using a steering bracket from a little Firestone 5 hp. It will bolt right up and fit perfectly. One thing needs to be fixed before I can do it though. The tube's ID wall thickness is too thick and my son is a machinist so he's going to take care of that for me. Anyway, very nice outboard! I like that you feature many of these brands that didn't quite survive like Evinrude, Johnson and Mercury!

      It's not too bad. It runs and sounds good. I would like to get a bit better idle out of it but it's decent and strong. It is interesting that the steering bracket from the 5hp fits with a little machining modification. Glad you have a.way to get that done. I have a little hobby shop myself. It sure comes in handy. Thanks for watching!

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 yes, just the inside diameter on the Firestone 5 hp is too small because the tube is super heavy duty. Strange that the smaller horsepower motor would have the beefier tube but it does. All that needs to be done is to bore the bottom of the tube about an inch and a quarter deep and it will slide right into the lower mount bracket. There is a cylindrical spacer inside the lower mount bracket the tube fits over

    I have always loved to watch the prop thrust in the roostertail when your scooting along in nice clear water I don't know why but I always thought it was awesome looking thing of the physics behind it all.

    I have to give you Kudos. When I see someone like you owning this motor it makes me happy. It seems everything old that is not OMC gets neglected and goes to waste. I am guilty of letting my 1954 (I think) 16 HP Scott-Atwater rot in my shed. It was never in great shape, even when I was a kid. I don't know what happened to it, but the low speed jet area of the carburetor was broken and somebody put epoxy on it. I never was able to find a new carb for it. You had to start it at 1/4 throttle or more or it just wouldn't run.
    I was about 10 years old when my dad started to let me run it on an old water logged plywood boat. It had a ton of compression and a spring loaded choke that you had to hold in to choke it. I wasn't strong enough to both pull the cord and hold in the choke, so learned to either hold in the choke and pull it over slowly a few times to get some fuel to it, or use my toes to hold in the choke while pulling with both hands. With the carb issue you definitely wanted to be sitting down before putting it in gear.
    Back to my original comment - guys like you will keep these running for the future generations. Thank you!

      I do love my OMC motors, but others interest me too and it's God to broaden my horizons a little bit at least. I have almost bought a 16hp Scott Bail-A-Matic twice, but passed on one and missed the other one. Mayne one of these days I'll get one
      This is a cool motor. I have a 14hp McCulloch that is VERY similar to it that needs a lower unit and then a tune up. I'd love to get that one going too. Thank tou for the compliment and thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Год назад +1

      It is a nice runner. I also have a 1980 and now a 1983 Sea King 15hp, neither of which I have run on a boat yet. While this motor does well, I kind of expected a little more out of it. I have a handful of OMC 10hp motors that I have gotten 20mph out of on an empty boat. I had a kicker in the bow so I'm sure I could have gotten 20 out of this one with the boat empty, but it seems no faster than my 12hp Elgin amd I'd be disappointed in my 15hp Sea Kings if they didn't do a little better than this 14hp Scott. That said, it's still a good runner and enjoyable to run. It's a bit different, so it adds that to the collection. Thanks for watching!

    Ran a 10 hp Scott with a turquoise hood as a kid (circa 1960) ... lot of fun. It got stolen but then replaced by a 18 hp Gale with an orange hood. Pastel colours were the rage then ! My Scott made that same whisseling sound as your 10 hp which I guess came from air sucked by the carburator. Love every one of your vids Ben !

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Год назад

      I have seen those Scotts with the turquoise hood but have never owned one. Sucks that it got stolen. Yes, those pastel colors were popular in that era. That whine/whistle sound is the gearcase whining. It almost sounds like a supercharger in some ways. Many of the OMC motors with the earlier 5-bolt gearcase and the large 4-bolt from the 15hp Evinrudes and the Johnson 10hp from 1952-54 have a similar characteristic. Thanks for watching!

    That’s a good running Wizard (Scott) for that early model! She sounds a little loud even watching on my I Phone 13 Pro Max. Nonetheless a really decent motor! The smoke there is the same density here in southeast Iowa! Yes I can smell it here also. It’s so hazy one can’t even see the color of the sky! Mark in Iowa.

      I'm happy with how this motor runs as well. It is a little noisier than some other motors of similar output. I definitely cannot see any blue sky here either. Eve. When the sun is clearly shining up there, the sky is very gray. I'll be clad when it clears up. Thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Год назад

      Yes, parts availability is not very good for these motors. This one shares a lot of things with the early McCulloch outboards too. Nit saying those are easy either, but it does expand the choices a little when searching for used stuff. Thanks for watching!

      I do have a number of outboards that are outside the "mainstream" manufacturers. I enjoy them all and like to expand my experiences into others. I jabe found that I quite like some of the others. The West Bends are really great motors. They lack some of the nice features of OMC or Mercury and I don't care for the recoil starters on them, but they work if you're gentle with them. They are nice runners and very solid built for a typically lower priced option. Thanks for watching!
