A step-by-step guide on how to replace the head gaskets on an outboard motor. This outboard motor is a 1987 Evinrude (model E120TXCUR). IRWIN Bolt Extractors - www.amazon.com...
This was awesome! I have a 2stroke 40hp yamaha that will throw the overheating buzzer if I gun it for too long. I am certain that those channels around the cylinders are a little clogged up. Brand new impeller and the same thing. Only takes about 1 minute and the buzzer goes off at full throttle. I might take on this project myself since the mechanic will bend me over on that job!
On older evinrude/Johnsons they have about three water restrictor tubes per cylinder that fit around the cylinders at specific locations. You install them by pulling the old ones up and out and pushing new ones down along the cylinder in the same exact position. If these tubes are missing, restricted from collapse, or blocked with gunk, they can cause the motor to overheat and blow another gasket. They look like short pieces of vacuum line hose. I think they charged me about $6 a piece for them which is nothing but a rip-off for very little rubber. Thought about cutting some automotive hose to that length and size and using it but didn't want to take the chance of screwing up. Any way if you replace a head gasket and you see the top ends of these tubes around the cylinders, and they are collapsed or deformed/blocked up then you better change them before replacing the head gasket and you should always check the trueness of the head mating surface with a straightedge before installing a gasket.
If that motor has an exhaust cover/lid should be removed and all water paths clened to perfection. If cylinder heads, upper pistons, inner exhaust covers are found too carboned up take advantage to clean them to fatory state condition. The motot will cool much better than just cleaning the cylinder heads water paths. The cylinder head bolts can be installed in no particular order till finger tighten. The diagram shown is the torque sequence pattern that must be followed to specs after that.
I've got a 96 yamaha 20hp outboard was going all good took out for ride got in the water an it wouldn't start then oil started coming out from the foot of the motor still start but sounds like it's running on 1 plug is there a easy fix.
Hi I am thinking to clean my pistons from carbon on my outboard? My question is do I have to put nex gasket after I done or can I use the same one after clean it? Do you also recommend this I mean should i give a good clean up to pistons or leave it like that? Thanks
@@reddawng43x91 thanks for replying yes I did not open the head! How ever I sprayed some carb cleaner inside pistons and I have stick some clean clothes inside and did take some dirt out? Do you think this will damage piston area?
@@bahadirdogan6208 if u want to clean the inside of head the best thing to do is mix one bottle of sea foam with 1 gallon of premix and let it idle and rev up and run it till u burn that gallon of fuel should clean everything
Hi there I am about to get started on a very similar project. Issue I have is the two bolts towards the bottom are quite rusted and I am worried the will snap even though I have sprayed them to loosen them up. Any suggestions?
That's unfortunately a possible outcome when dealing with bolts in that area that haven't been removed in a while. Let the spray sit on them for a while and then apply a tight-fitting socket and put a nice long extension breaker bar on it and apply steady pressure using the breaker bar. If you just use a short handle socket wrench only, then there is a possibility it could break off. You can also apply a good bit of heat to the bolt as well.
@@JasonLefevers You have no clue about what your doing ! That motor is blown up! You can see on bottom cyl that something passed through the combustion chamber. On top of all this you don't even resurface the head and block surfaces. It wont matter anyway cause the material that holds the steel sleeve is cracked and rotted. The first thing you do is a compression test ,then you could have just thrown it away,it's junk wat a waist of a head gasket. WAKE UP D/B
Dude you don’t put the bolt back on on that order you torque them in that order! Why would you do a gasket video and not give the most important part of the whole job? torque spec and the stages? Usually 2 stages of torque pattern settings first a moderate torque then again with final torque. That v4 may not have 2 stages however to Be clear you can hand tighten them to get them in place in any order but when you start tightening the bolts it needs to be in that order usually in 2 stages sometimes not!
terry fonz Dude, I misspoke. For proper torque specs I mention they should get their outboards manual. Do you normally make the rounds pointing out mistakes in everyone’s videos. Get a life.
Thank you sir these series of videos helped a great bunch thank you sir

Thermostat is not an overheat alarm it opens and closes to allow quick warm up

I always try to keep my plug wires separated ..you never want your wires crossed.. they can arc on each other...

Great video. Don’t worry about the d-bag know it all’s!

Me gustan los videos por que estoy aprendiendo mecanica
Please do not ever use an impact on a seized head boot.
Every cylinder on my 4 cylinder Johnson 115 hp motor had oil dripping out, not bad but some, is it this gasket that causes it mostly or piston rings
Thank you!
Quick question, where did you get the manual pages you showed at roughly 9:12. can seem to find this information anywhere

Did you ever find out the torque specs

is the plug firing? If it is, does that particular cylinder have good compression? If not it could be a blown head gasket.

Don’t touch the pistons! Yes you need a new gasket everytime you take the head covers off

Try clockwise too, usually works for me..... Tighten, loosen etc.

@@JasonLefevers Thanks Jason. Runs fine so I have decided to leave it alone for another day :) I'll cross the bridge when I need to
Nice job Jason. Have the same motor. However my shop manual does not have the order or the torgue. Any chance you can share?
did you ever find out or get a response? I am in need also.

These outboards redoing the head gasket or older carb outboards you just do yourself if have the tools and a shop. It's not hard .
There tiny motors really.
Don't forget to buy a manual if you don't have one.
could this be fairly applicable with a 95 merc 75hp?
Yes, It should be the same general process. I've done even smaller Mercs using the same general method n this video.
