    So this isn't the head gaskets you replaced. It's just the water jacket. If you'd pulled the head off we would be able to see the pistons (not just through the spark plug holes). You should change the title, I just spent 7 minutes watching the wrong thing because the title was misleading....just saying....

    Thanks for your video, I'm trying to get the extractor key for the tail of that same engine and I can't find it anywhere and many mechanics don't even have that key. Can you help me know where I can get that key?

      When I'm looking for a part number, I use MarineEngine.com.
      I'll go through their section and it will have an exploded view of all the parts. I hope you find it.

    These engines don't have a Cylinder Head.... Therefore no head gasket. You removed the water jacket gasket.

    what sort of epoxy if you remember, and how did you go through the process, thanks in advance have 6 of them to do a Mercury 25

      Drilled out the bolt hole, oversized, epoxy, let cure for a couple days. Drilled the new hole, tapped for new insert, put in the insert and bolted it together. Made sure to not over torque.
      I ended up selling that motor, soon after. Disclosed it of course.

    Were you able to get the bottom bolts of the water jacket cover out without removing any of the cowling.? I have a 2001 25 merc that doesn't look like theres room to get the bolts out.

    • @jacksonjacko8301
      @jacksonjacko8301 2 года назад

      2 bottom bolts would need to cowling removed if drilling out

    • @doug7639
      @doug7639 2 года назад

      I managed to get a slight turn on the bolt that was leaking and it stopped for now. I have the gaskets if I ever need them. I do believe that the four bolts inside will loosen the bottom portion of the cowling enough to get it out of the way for those bottom bolts. I just barely got one of the thermostat bolts out without snapping it. It will need a tap run down the hole to clean up the threads for a new bolt

    I have an earlier model 40hp, same but different basically. My problem is no water. Replacing the pump and at least 3 fins of the impellar are unaccounted for. I just know they are clogging the water jackets passages somewhere but i don't want to deal with the same issues you had. Just have to cross my fingers.

      I'm surprised how clean it was in there. I made sure to flush it every time I took it out of the water. Salt here in San Diego.
      Hey, thanks for watching. I hope your 40 Merc holds up!

      @@Sea2SeaAdventures well for one you used an open ended wrench. You used no heat, No impact gun and not any kind of penetrating oil. So yeah. This is what happens. Btw you didnt replace the head gasket and you also didn't need to even replace the water jacket gasket in the first place

    I have a problem with water coming in my 1999 25 hp mercury. It looks like the water is shooting out from the bottom of the exhaust cover. Would I likely just replace both gaskets? How would I know how much to torque those bolts?

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  3 года назад

      I don’t have the torque specs, but with the amount of bolts that I broke off, I didn’t trust torquing them over 20 ish flbs. Good luck.

    dude, I have the same motor; this week I took off the head and broke 3 bolts flush with the body; how did your father-in-law get them out? did he drill and then tap the holes? I wish that I never took it off.

    • @Sea2SeaAdventures
      @Sea2SeaAdventures  3 года назад +1

      As soon as that first bolt turned loose, I thought the same thing.
      Drilled them out and used Helicoils on two of them. One was drilled out so bad that we used epoxy to fill the large gap, drilled, taped with a Helicoil. I put that motor back together and sold it, making sure I told them about it of course. I went with a Mercury 20 with EFI.
      Then I sold that boat, unrelated to the motor.
      Good luck.

      Have you ran it with the top cowling off to see where it's from? This power head did not like being taken apart.
      I'm in salt water, so I was able to see salt buildup where it was leaking.
      I ended up replacing the motor with a 20 EFI... Then I sold that boat because I needed/wanted something bigger.
