1960 Scott-McCulloch 12/14hp Outboard Motor Lake Test "Scotty-Macenstein"
CORRECTION: In the video I mistakenly said the powerhead was also from.the 12hp. It is not! It has the 14.1hp McCulloch powerhead on it now.
Bought a 12hp Scotty-Mac with what I hoped was a good gearcase to replace a bad one on a McCulloch 14hp that had been sitting for several years. Ended up liking the Scott 12 and transplanting the 14.1 steering bracket, transom clamp, and powerhead onto the 12 Scott. Turned out to be a great motor.

This is is basically as-purchased condition with only a fee carburetor adjustments. It still needs the carburetor cleaned and the fuel pump is a little flaky. Still, it's a very nice example of a Fishing Scott variant with a nice cover that is still pretty well intact save for a couple cracks on the back. It may improve once it has had a tune up. We'll hope to see next season.

Thanks again , I am holding on to a few of these. Can you go over a fine tuning carb video. Bryan .
@@BryanParrish-o3n I have a video on this channel on dialing in a carburetor. I'm tuning it in the test tank. The motor in thay video is a '58 Johnson 18hp, but the procedure is identical for the 5.5hp. That video should help. Thanks again for watching!
Thanks for the info , Can you tell me where I can buy the solid Cooper core wire, only see it by the foot on Amazon ? Thanks Bryan
I often buy my wire from Ebay when I can find certain ones that I like better. I have used quite a bit of Pico wire, which I have also bought from Ebay. I have used this wire from Amazon also. a.co/d/aLyVPg7 Thanks for watching!
Hi @old JohnnyRude! Watched quite a few of your videos now, and finally came up with a question for you. I’ve got a buddy with this exact motor, on a small 12ft aluminum sears from the ‘70s. Wondering if you could recommend me a prop to get a little more speed from it? I don’t want to overshoot and lug the engine, but I’d love to get him something to spice it up a smidge (his birthdays coming up and it could be a solid fun gift).
@ericburns4718 There is not really a lot to be had in the way of performance gains with a prop for this motor on a typical 12 foot aluminum utility. My go to all around prop for these motors is a Michigan Wheel PJ10, which is a 3-blade aluminum 8.25x8.5P. I usually get the best performance out of this prop on these OMC 10s. There are lower pitch props available if you're looking for a little better holeshot or carrying a heavy load, but on a light boat, they will give up top end. The '70s 12 foot Sears is a pretty small and light boat, so I'd guess the stock prop or a PJ10 is going to give the best performance on that setup. The new stock replacement is 8.25x8P and 'could' be slightly better with a heavier load in the boat than the 8.25x8.5P PJ10, but i have doubts. The Michigan props tend to be slightly more efficient. Thanks for watching!
Your videos help me get through the cold winter days. They remind me that spring will return again and I need more projects.
@timecountry3839 I'm sure glad to be able to help with that. I'm looking forward to Spring and getting back on the water again. If i get any time away from all the other stuff going on in life this winter, I'll get a couple more motors done and ready to run next season. Thanks for watching!
I JUST finished one I was given last year, top to bottom mechanical. Sure a different animal from the 1955 25. Thankful for it being factory electric start. Figuring about 50 years since last run. Any gas that had been left in it had crystalized into amber colored grit, almost like sand. Now to wait 3 or 4 months for it to be warm enough to test run!
Can you share where I can buy a roll? Thanks for your help.
@BryanParrish-o3n Copper core spark plug wire can be purchased by the roll at many farm stores, tractor dealers, hot rod supply houses, and many online sources such as Ebay and Amazon. Thanks for watching!
I am 70 years old. I have a fully restored 1956 15HP Evinrude. it is amazing. However, at my age, I sure would like to find an electric start outboard. This one would be perfect.
@middlfam The '56 15hp is a great old motor. Nothing idles down like a 50s OMC 15 in good tune. The 18s are my all-time favorite, though. This is a great motor and one on my favorites in my collection. There are some of them put there, but the later they get, the more tend to show up in electric start. The 9.9/15s were available in electric start also and would make a nice motor. I like how the older 18s run, though. Lower RPM, larger displacement, more torque than the 9.9/15. They're out there if you keep an eye out. Thanks for watching!
Cool video! I have this motor, strong 10! What size boat is this? How fast do you believe it would push a 14 foot semi V?
@stuffandsuchyeah5182 These are very nice running motors. They are typically pretty strong 10hp motors. This is a 16 ft (15'10") Alumacraft Model K. With proper loading/balance and trim adjustment, i would expect between 17and 19mph out of this motor on a 14ft semi V with similar hull design to this boat. A boat with a full Vee bottom will give up some speed, but ride a bit smoother in chop. Thanks for watching!
So you’re getting 19 mph on a 16 ft boat in this video? Wow that’s impressive with a 10 hp. Thanks for the info!
@stuffandsuchyeah5182 Yes, I got 19mph with my 16 footer in this video. 👍
Thanks for your info. Looking forward to meeting you. Are you planning on going to finger lakes meet up?

I'm putting together a 56 aerocraft pd12 I have an rd14 and a po15
@greasepitgarage1893 The RD is a lot of motor for this boat unless the transom is braced up. Great little boat and it handles beautifully with mid mounted remote controls, but the RD is just a very heavy and torquey motor for the transom without some additional bracing. The 22c.i. OMCs are much better suited to this hull without significant modifications to the rear of the hull. Just letting you know ahead of time. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Air cooled? How do we know if it's running cool?
@BryanParrish-o3n Yes, this motor is air-cooled. They run fairly hot like most air-cooled engines. The paint shouldn't burn, though. A non-contact thermometer can be used to see what the running temperature is. Before those existed, a temperature crayon could be used. Thanks for watching!
Hi Old JohnnyRude, I have a 1954 Clinton Chief "Model 24" (2.5 hp), which looks very similar to your motor. It runs good, but the carb leaks. I've cleaned out the carb and made my own gaskets, to try and rebuild it, but it still leaks out of one of the butterfly shaft bushings. Anyhow, do you know of a source for either replacement carbs, carb re-builders, or even rebuild kits for these (It's a Tillotson MT38A)?
@@orig6redwings124 Hi there! Discount Marine Parts has a kit for Tillotson MT38 for sale. I'm not sure if the rebuild kit will fix your problem or not. If not, I'd try looking for another used carburetor that may be in better condition to rebuild as a replacement. I don't think you're going to find a new replacement that will work. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
What do you think about these old 18hp fastwins? More so a 1966. Do you think they are still a dependable motor to use on a 14ft boat?
@thomashorn7375 They're my favorite all-around motors. I run 1960s OMC 18s as my regular runners on all my aluminum boats from 12-16 feet. IMO, there's nothing better. Thanks for watching!

Wow back in the late 70’s and early 80’s when we were young cats we could water ski behind a 12 ft johnny and a 9.9 Johnson.
@sevenhornets They are some of the best fishing motors ever made, in my opinion. That would have been a blast. Thanks for watching!
Good morning, Great video! These look like great motors. I was surprised at the speed you obtained. I just picked up a boat with this same motor on it. Guy said it ran good but too cold for me to test myself right now. I am wondering if you have any extra 2 line pressure tanks you would be willing to sell? I have one that came with the boat but I plan on using this quite a bit and would like an extra. I am in south boardman, MI.
@jonlange8905 Thank you! These are excellent motors. They run very well and really strong as long as they are tuned properly. I hope you have good luck with yours. Get yours on the water and see how it does. If you end up really needing a second pressure tank, let me know. I can probably get one set up with a new line and a rebuilt fitting for an OK price if you end up needing it. I could bring it up north with me when we go up next season. Thanks for watching!

The only bad thing about restoring it, is its only original once. Once that's gone, it's gone forever. Nobody expects the mechanical stuff to remain original forever, but cosmetic, yea. Leave it alone.
I'm afraid the "original" is long gone on this one already. This motor was originally cream and gold colored before someone rattle bombed it black. This looks like a blast, very nice country as well. How do you decide what motor to use? It’s a tough decision for me every time I go out. Thanks for the videos.
@pryan05p71 It's always a blast. I usually leave home with the motor i plan to run on the cruise. Some of us in the group will find a motor at the meet, tune it up while we're there, and run that motor on the cruise. @Brodylovell51 I buy a lot of my parts from Marineengine.com. I try to stay with OEM for most of my parts because I don't trust the quality of much of the aftermarket stuff out there. Other sources are iBoats and Crowley Marine. If you have an Evinrude parts dealer nearby, supporting the local guy is nice. I have a question, what are the 3 levers in front of you? If I know what the choke is when it turns on and the other two are not
@Pesca.503 The other two knobs are the high speed and low speed carburetor mixture needles. They are used to adjust the fuel/air ratio of the high speed and low speed (idle) circuits of the carburetor. I have a video on this channel on dialing in an OMC carburetor following a rebuild. That would demonstrate how those adjustments work if you are not familiar with them. Thanks for watching!

That's interesting. I've never had an evinrude or Johnson this old or small but picked one up today and it started no worries after a few goes. I was trying to figure out if it was pumping enough water but seems to be the same as in your video. Cheers
@chiphood2966 Congratulations on your new motor. Glad to hear it fired up for you with little effort. If it is unknown when the water pump was last serviced, I would certainly recommend at least replacing the impeller as those will deteriorate just from sitting, especially if they sat in one position for several years without moving. Good luck with your little motor, and thanks for watching!
@oldjohnnyrude8404 it sat in a shed for 11 years so definitely will be replacing the impeller. I've collected heaps of outboards but this is the first one that doesn't have telltale pissing out the back of the engine so
@chiphood2966 Good call on the impeller replacement. Yes, these just have an exhaust relief hole(s) that chuff/spray some water out, but not stream.
I have one just like that! Ran like a top; 40 yrs. ago! Have the siphon puck, hose and the gas tank! you are right, the hoods are delicate plastic. mine is yellowed over time and still untouched since last use. (Havn't even washed it!)
@@kevinkreinbrink6534 Very cool! Thanks for watching!
Mr Johnny Rude I just picked up two Johnson CD motors one is a 54 and the other is a 56. They both seem to run okay in the tank, now what temperature should they be running at ? Gear shift side is at about 85 to 95, the head is 105 to 110, and the tiller side on the exhaust cover is 185 to 205. The water pump seems to be working. I'm trying to load a video but don't know how to.
@stevenspryn4972 Very cool. Congratulations on your new motors. They usually run at around 95-130°F on the block. The cylinder head will run a bit hotter. The exhaust cover on these motors is not water cooled, so they get very hot and that is normal. Your motors seem to be cooling well. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much.
@@stevenspryn4972 You're welcome!
Would you have any idea what would cause a 1961 5.5 hp Evinrude to lack vacuum to pull fuel into the cylinders. The compression on both cylinders are 85 to 90 psi. I removed the powerhead and when I pulled the starter rope while it was sitting flat on a plate, it fired and tried to start for the first time. When I hold my hand over the carburetor intake there is no vacuum whatsoever. I replaced the gasket between the powerhead and lower unit, but still have the same issue. The O-ring in the crank case seal had two cracks in it and the gasket above the washer appears to be bad so I was going to replace that. Do you think it could be the cause of lack of vacuum to draw fuel into the cylinders?
@blaine_yousan if your engine is not drawing any fuel through the carburetor, I would suspect you have reed valve or reed valves stuck, bent, obstructed, or broken. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Thanks. I pulled the reed plate, shined a strong flashlight from under to see how much light would come through the reeds. Barely a thin visible sliver could be seen after removing and wiping down the reeds and polishing the plate on a flat granite plate with 600 grit lubricated wet/dry paper then cleaned and reassembled. I will be replacing the lower crankcase seal gasket and o-ring under the powerhead since I saw fuel leak down to the foot cavitation plate. I’m hoping that may cause some loss of vacuum.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the boat rides on Allen Lake. I have not seen many Meyers sailboats. Unfortunately, Meyers didn't keep the best records. You could try writing them or giving them a call. They have moved to Adrian, MI from Tecumseh, MI since the mid 1990s, but they're still building aluminum boats and they may be able to give you some information. You may also try the Vintage Aluminum Boats Facebook Page to see if you can get some information there. Good luck and thanks for watching!
That's interesting that it's a 16 to 1 while other 1958 Johnsons were usually 24 to 1. I wonder how much they changed th 3 horse's design. I have a 1965 3hp and it says it takes 50 to 1.
The 3, 5.5, and 7.5hp were 16:1 in '58. The 10, 18, 35, and 50hp were 24:1 in '58. The answer to your question about how much they changed the 3hp is.... they didn't. They changed the fuel mix ratio to 50:1 in 1964 across all motors. Some changed designs with this change, and others didn't. They should have never actually changed the 3s to 50:1. They'll run on it, but it will shorten their life considerably from what they do on a sweeter oil mix. They put a rolling bearing on the flywheel end of the crank in 1969 with the introduction of the 4hp, but the rod journals, center and lower mains, and wristpins are all still bushings. I don't typically run my 4hps on less oil than 24:1 either, and all those came with a 50:1 factory recommendation. Thanks for watching!
@oldjohnnyrude8404 I have a 1957 5.5 and I run it on 24 to 1, did they change the 5.5 back to 16 to 1 in 1958 or is the 57 really a 16 to 1 motor? My 5.5 has been run on 24 to 1 for about 3 years and it's doing fine. About the 1965 3hp being called 50 to 1, I believe mine was run on 50 to 1 and there's a bit of scoring on the cylinder walls. I decided to run it on 24 to 1 to slow down any more damage.
@EdwinsTrains The '57 is actually a 16:1 motor. Thise motors were originally supplied with a 4 gallon fuel tank as were the 7.5hp models. One quart of oil in the tank with 4 gallons of gasoline gives the recommended 16:1 mix. The 10hp and up motors were supplied with 6 gallon tanks. One quart of oil in with 6 gallons of gasoline in those tanks gives the recommended 24:1 mix for those motors. The 3, 5.5, and 7.5hp motors are all bushing powerheads with no rolling bearings. The 10hp had needle bearings on the top and bottom main bearings and the big ends of the rods. Bushings at the center main and wristpins until 1961 when they added needle bearings to the wristpins. The 18hp was always a full roller bearing powerhead, but still carried a 24:1 mix recommendation until 1964. Good call running your 3hp with more oil. 50:1 is not enough for those motors unless all they ever do is troll. 24:1 should be minimum oil content for those.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 do you think it's safe to run a 16 to 1 5.5 on 24 to 1 for limited periods of time? It only gets ran for about 4 weeks every year and the weeks it runs are spaced out throughout they year
@EdwinsTrains The 5.5s are more tolerant of 24:1 than the 7.5s are. A good quality TCW-3 oil mixed at 24:1 will probably now cause you any trouble in your 5.5 as long as it isn't run a WOT for long periods of time, has a well-functioning water pump, and isn't getting any water intrusion into the powerhead. I occasionally run 5.5s on 24:1 for short runs. I never run the 7.5s on less than 16:1. They're kind of delicate.
Got the same on my welded aluminum 15ft sled type boat. They have a lot of power for there size. Used it for a while had it since 2006. Haven't used in about 9 yrs so hope it will go when I get going on it. Was running when put away with carb run dry. Been indoors.
@kayco53 They're strong motors. Yours will probably fire back up and run fine without much work. After sitting 9 years, I'd highly recommend replacing the water pump impeller and lubricating the cylinders with some 2-stroke oil before firing it up the first time. Other than that, it will probably fire right up. Thanks for watching!
Didn’t you have to change the flywheel also to one with one magnet?
@teametal11 No, the original dual magnet flywheel for the low-tension magneto works just fine with the universal magneto. The points still only fire the cylinder that needs to fire. Thanks for watching!
Very impressive old 15 horse motor. Many older motors are treasures worth restoring. 1960 was a great year to be alive. I have a 1969 Evinrude 6 hp and a 1969 Johnson 6 hp. Great little motors. Not too heavy to lift on and off the boat and a nice amount of power for my 14 ft Jon Boat. I also have two great running Sears GameFisher 3 hp air cooled motors as well. Thanks for sharing.
@@MrSirPhase3 I like these Gale 15s quite well. They're not nearly as common as the Johnson and Evinrude, yet they share most of the components. Those little 6hps are sweet little fishing motors. I have a few of those also. Thanks for watching!
I have a 1984 Evinrude 25 hp on a 14’ StarCraft Vee Alum boat. With me (stout) wife and a 180lb passenger, two batteries, two 6 gallon cans & trolling motor will push 27-28mph and 30ish with just two aboard. Is mine the larger displacement engine?
Yes, your '84 Evinrude is a 32c.i displacement powerhead. They're very nice strong runners. The '69-'76 25s were 22c.i. the earlier 25s from the 1950s were 35.7c.i. They were very strong runners as well and lots of torque with a max RPM of 4000. The 32c.i motors are powerful and fast. Thanks for watching!
Thats is a Good looking and Running Johnson 25 H.P. Outboard you have there. 👍
@johnelsonjr.6008 Thank you! This is a very nice, strong-running 22c.i 25hp. I like the look, too, but folks either like the flames or they don't. This motor usually lives on my '59 Alumacraft Model R. Thanks for watching!
Had one just like it. Great running outboard. Thanks for post.
These are great runners and the 61-63 were the best 10hps OMC built (from a powerhead standpoint anyway) in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Do you know where i can find one of these? My Dad had one and it was stolen out of his Garage. My Dad passed in 2010 and i would really like to find another one for my Jon Boat
Where are you located? I have one of these that I would sell. Otherwise, keep an eye on Marketplace and Craigslist. They're out there. Most of them will need a full tune-up service, seals, and a water pump impeller at least to make them reliable regular runners again, but they're out there and parts are still pretty available. Thanks for watching!
