- I bought this motor last Fall. It was stated that this motor had something wrong with the powerhead and that it would lose compression and power after warming up. I get about 105-110 compression on bothe cylinders and it doesn't lose power for me after going through the ignition system and the carburetor. It is a very nice running and good performing 15hp OMC motor.
Love seeinf these old motors still having life 60+ years later. I spent my summers at Gun Lake in Michigan all i remember Merc, Evinrude , Johnson and Gale on the back of boats back than. Oh and rhe old wood inboards.
It's a lot of fun bringing them back to life and getting them back to doing what they were made to do. Thanks for watching!
You know it's running really good when the trailing edge of the chine water behind you becomes parallel & the prop wash boil flattens right out for a long distance! She's really pushing strong & powerful! 😊
This motor turned out to be a very good running 15hp. This boat setup performs remarkably well. I really enjoy running this little boat. Thanks for watching!
That is running great!! You brought another one back to life !!! Thanks for the ride along! It is always great!
I'm very pleased with how this motor is running, especially after being told the powerhead had a problem that sounded like it was going to require major work. After a proper tune up, this one is singing a tune again. Thanks for watching!
That is a strong running 15 horse Gale! Nice and smooth running! You got a good one Ben! Mark in Iowa.
This is a strong one. I need to get my other one ('62 Sea King 15) on this boat and see how it compares. This one runs very nicely. Thanks for watching, Mark!
Nice first run: Hi from Middle Straits Lake. 🚂
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Glad to have you back. Love your videos. I have a1958 5.5 Johnson Fisherman motor that I would like to get going soon. Take care.
Glad to be back! Thank you so much. I have a nice '58 Fisherman I need to knock the dust and cobwebs off of and take out for another run sometime. Great little motors. Thanks for watching!
Nothing wrong with that motor! 21 MPH out of that vintage 15 is moving right along. Hoping I will be on the water for my first time this year early next week when I am at my place in Minnesota. Always enjoy your videos Ben! Thanks!
Nothing at all wrong with this motor after it got a proper tune up.👍 Very happy with the performance from a vintage 15hp. I'm curious to try it with a 9.25x11P prop to see if I gain or lose at the top end. Hope you can get out on the water next week. I'd like to get out again this weekend and run a couple more. Thanks for watching, David!
@oldjohnnyrude8404 Over 1,000 lakes in the county I'm in up there so the only thing that would stop me would be weather. Most all are clear and clean with clarity of 12 to 16 feet. Taking 5 motors plus the ones already up there.
@@davidparlee3102 Awesome! Have fun and be safe!
He inspires me often David!
It's a "sweet-heart" for sure. Thanks for the video.
It is a nice one. Matching little brother to my 1960 Buccaneer 25hp. Thanks for watching!
Love the old Boats and motors ! That’s a strong running 15 !
Thank you. Yes, this is a really strong 15hp motor. One if the stronger ones I have run. Thanks for watching!
I remember these motors from my childhood in the 60s .
I'm sure they were very plentiful. There were still a great many in regular use during my childhood in the late 70s and the 80s. I still see them on the back of small boats (other than my own) from time to time even in 2024. It is certainly a testament to their quality and simplicity. Thanks for watching!
That is a nice running motor
It really did turn out nice. After being told the powerhead had issues, I wasn't expecting much, but the vitals checked out and the tune up proved it was healthy. Thanks for watching!
That’s a strong running 15hp. That makes my 15hp Johnson look weak!
It is certainly a strong 15. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. It's one of the strongest 15s I have had. Thanks for watching!
I had one of these a few years ago, I reconditioned it and later sold it. I wish I hadn’t because it seemed to be a perfect motor for my boat. I posted a brief RUclips video of it, I repainted the motor cowling blue to match my homemade boat
They're excellent motors. This is my second 60's Gale 15hp. The OMC 18s are still my favorite all around, but these are great. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the ride and have fun.
@@badgerbob2226 Thanks for watching!
No one should be surprised at this motor's speed. That's why OMC named them "Gale"! 😂
😉👍
Thats fast. Sure thats not a 25hp with a 15hp decal. Lol
This makes me want to get mine back together.
It's not bad. Yes, I'm sure this one is legitimately a 15hp (at least now). I'm quite pleased with the performance of this stock OMC 15hp. It would be fun as a 25hp. 🤔 Thanks for watching!
I just picked up a really nice 18hp gale. Runs good apparently i havent had on the water yet to test but im excited now after seing what this 15 does
Is your motor a 15hp also? The reason I ask is because to my knowledge Gale never produced an 18hp. They made 3, 5, 12, 15, 25, 35, 40, and 60hp outboards. An 18hp J/E powerhead could have been fitted to a 15hp, which would be a great motor. In any case, I'm sure you will be pleased with yours when you get it on the water. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404im not 100% sure its a 18hp. Thats what pervious owner says it was. Ill take a closer look at serial number/displacment one day soon and let you know!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 ended up being a 15hp also. Model 15D 12B Serial 50251. Happen to know the year of it??
I need to find a couple bigger Gales Ben! Drop me a line if you pass on a goid one or two!
I'll keep my eyes open, especially if I see something in your area. 👍
Question, is the Gale 15 the exact same motor as the pre 57 15 Johnson and Evinrude or is a detuned 18? Thanks 👍
The Gale 15 is basically the same motor as the '56 OMC 15hp except it uses lip style crankshaft seals on the top and bottom and was originally produced with a fuel pump instead of using the dual line pressure tank. I had heard at one time they put needle bearings on the wristpins in these 15s also, but I have never split the crankcase on one of these 60s Gale 15s so I cannot confirm or deny that. The displacement is the same as the 53-56 15hp J/E though. It is definitely not a detuned 18hp. Thanks for watching!
I think OMC / Gale may have used the exact same powerhead as the 1953 thru 55 Evinrude SuperFastwin model 15012 15's. With the 2.38" x 2.25" bore & 19.94 cu. in. displacement!
Like mine, those were quite a solid performer. The previous 52 & earlier plain ol' "Fastwins" (non super) were a bit lacking in the performance department & not so fast.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 thanks for the detailed explanation, btw, growing up I had a 71/2, 10, two 18’s and two 40’s. The small motors were great, the 40’s were gas hogs. IMO, OMC’S best motors were the 3 cylinder loop charged 55-75.
The boat may run so good because it's better balanced than with the T, I, l, l, e, R, do you ever run?British siegels.I know they're not as fun but they are kind of cool❤❤❤
This boat is an absolutely ideal setup with the center deck controls. It is a really terrible handling boat from the tiller. I have a British Seagull 40+ but have not gotten it running yet. When I do get to it, I'll make a video. They are kind of cool. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 🤩🤩🤩🤩🙂🙂🙂
It was meeee! That worked on it.
What’s points?
WHAT'S POINTS???😂
Surprisingly ballzy motor! Seems more like a 20 horse
It definitely has some GO in it for a 15. My 18s will typically push mid-20's on this boat, so it's no 20 horse but it's a good strong 15. I'm curious to try it with the next bigger prop to see if that helps or hurts the top end. Thanks for watching!
is it hard to make a tiller able to be driven like that?
The classic OMC outboards were designed and built with provisions for both tiller and remote controls on the motors 10hp and up. The 5.5 -7.5 motors needed an extra adapter piece to mount the control cable anchors. The 5.5 and up all have a mount for steering on the carry handle. Other than that, you just need to have the control box, cables, a steering connector, and steering controls. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 Ohhh okay thank you! I had no idea I'm going to attempt this with my mercury 9.9 now!
@@kickinuass14 Depending on the year and that it is a Mercury, this may be a much more involved ordeal. The OMCs were built for this. Many/most of the Mercs were not built this way.
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 oh. I honestly don't know the year but I believe it has the tub part that screws into the motor for the pipe thing in the bracket But I have no idea though this is all new to me
@@kickinuass14 Mercury did use the hollow tilt tube for push-pull steering much earlier than OMC. My aluminum boats are all rigged with cable-pulley steering that does not use the hollow tilt tube. I have never attempted to adapt one of the small Mercury motors to remote control cables. I have a couple of those motors, but never really looked into remotes for them since the vast majority of my collection is OMC. Worth looking into doing it if that's what you have. I just have not tried. The cables are definitely different for Mercury motors.
I'm second❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Happy with it? Ecstatic is more like it. They just dont run better than that! Period.
Agreed! This runs as good as any 15hp OMC of the era. It turned out great. Thanks for watching!
Im the 1st...😂
