    Two years later this motor is going strong ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

    Those older Japanese outboards are the best Tanaka . Much quieter with underwater exhaust. I put hundreds of hours on one when I was a kid.

    Good honest review. These asia made products will hold up if cared for properly. With two stroke engines that oil/fuel ratio needs to be just right. Id rather clean fouled plugs than re-ring a motor

    Be careful with the handle swivel. Mine was made of cheap cast aluminum and shattered at the handle end of the swivel while using it. I modified the handle it gets my canoe flying across the lake to the point I'm doing wheelies. Make sure the lower unit has oil in it.

      I have an 18' Coleman canot that had that problem of "porposing" up especially in a headwind. You should do what everyone does to make your canoe more stable on the water. Shift weight towards the bow to keep the bow from popping up because if wave or wind action! Same goes for boats that do not plane easily. Shifting weight forward balances your craft better, gains some speed, and becomes a safer craft!

  • @markanton2349
    @markanton2349 3 года назад +25

    Did you check the lower unit for oil? Some of these little outboards come dry and you need to put oil in the lower unit.

      Hi, where do you fill the oil?

    • @markanton2349
      @markanton2349 2 года назад +2

      Looking at the rear of the motor there are two screws on the right side of the lower unit. The oil comes in a plastic squeeze tube, motor must be upright when you fill it from the BOTTOM hole up.when full put top screw in first then remove tube. Don't relax pressure on squeeze tube or you suck the oil back out.

    • @markanton2349
      @markanton2349 2 года назад +1

    Anything will last longer with constant maintenance. The tie breaker for me is that centrifugal clutch in the leg. Across the board, everyone I have talked to about Chinese made outboards below 5hp is that centrifugal clutch wearing out every season (with steady use). Occasional use may let that clutch last two seasons, but usually less. The earlier outboards had a "Chinglish" owners manual that wasn't very understandable which caused many outboards to not last very long. I know that if I decide to buy one, it will be two cycle with forward, neutral, and reverse gears and above 6hp for longevity. These motors will last much longer when they are not strained too much. I once ran a 15hp Evinrude, and later twin 40hp Johnsons on my Alumacraft and I learned that the extra weight made for longer and more useful lives for those engines. Chinese made outboards are "extra" light, which means they sacrificed weight and longevity for "convenience".

    • @PatOutdoors
      @PatOutdoors  Год назад

      Yeah.. I replaced the clutch as well on this one on a later video. Really just got it as an experiment since the price made more sense than constantly renting a trolling motor and battery from my local park for $48 for a 6 hour period.

    Just shairing. I have not tested it yet on the water. I just brought an 12.5 raft pontoon boat. I have an old trolling motor. Only has slow and fast. I put on an variable speed. Yet, my point. I bought 2 20ah AMG sealed Marine grade friendly batteries. Hooked them up my way. An 20 watt self contained panel. So far running test time out of an 5gal bucket. Endless. At night not at full speed. 40% power. The double battery hookup is simple. Two battery 12v hookup as normal. Then make an X with the wires. One negative on one battery and the positive on the other. Then opposite with the solar. Yet I am watching this on shopping for an small fuel boat motor. Small electric trolling motors. Just hookup an 20 watt solar panel. 50 watts medium. 100 watts large. Then use your trolling motor as long as you want to.

    They're actually little deep they're actually decent motors but remember the prop that comes with the motor is a standard prop it's not a work prop it's not a speed prop but it is interchangeable so here is a good suggestion take it to your local marina and have them put a prop that matches that style motor got to give you a little bit more pitch and that'll up your speed and also save you on your gas consumption but the prop is interchangeable I do suggest that you do change the prop

    • @josepeixoto3384
      @josepeixoto3384 2 года назад +1

      i think it is the other way around;
      V hulled boats are slower and much heavier on gas,and they are good only for the rough water,the sea;
      The V makes them more confortable, like a spring ,since they go up and down on the waves better;
      but what do i know,this is the internet for you.

    • @favbal2450
      @favbal2450 2 года назад

      @@josepeixoto3384 depends which one you are thinking of. There is a difference of weight between the 12 ft Gregor front v and an old 12 ft sears front v model which is a lot lighter. Having said that, two people can easily carry both to the water while a single person can drag/push either to the water. With equal wind conditions and equal weight between both types of boats, the v front, flat bottom aluminum will still cut the waves easier than a square front flat bottom aluminum making it faster due to less resistance force. In flat water both types perform well enough.

    Is that a 14 ft john boat?
    Just bought a 14 ft sears v hull and thinking about this one or the 4hp 2 stroke one they offer also

    • @PatOutdoors
      @PatOutdoors  3 года назад +2

      Yes it's a 14 ft rental Jon boat. Didn't realize they offer a 4HP one, otherwise I would have gone with that! Either way I'm satisfied with the results from this 52cc engine and glad I no longer have to rent those weak electric trolling motors.

    I like your review. I have an old Ark. Traveler that has/had an 8hp evinrude, but it hasn't run in years, don't know if it will. Do you think one of these little motors would push my boat good enough to fish out of...I am not a speed freak so if it would push mine at 8 mph I would be happy.

    • @PatOutdoors
      @PatOutdoors  2 года назад

      Thanks! I don't think they would be the same quality as an Evinrude to be honest. It's simply just a good starter motor to put you around 7-8 MPH on a 12 ft jon boat. It's been good for a year so far, but I've had to check all the bolts periodically to make sure it's all still torqued to spec. One main downside with this motor is the sound. It's a small 2-stroke so it almost sounds like a weed-wacker and not very quiet.. So not great to use as a trolling motor for fishing.

    • @PatOutdoors
      @PatOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      I haven't had it for too long, only 4 months so I'm not sure how long it would actually last. But I'm sure with proper maintenance, it could go a few years. I would say it's a bit heavy to use for a kayak, but I'm trying that myself also. Just got me a kayak recently!

      Actually yes I did. But then I ended up NOT using the choke and it started right away. Never used the choke since and haven't had a problem starting it cold or hot. Also noticed the boat ran at 5MPH during the first 20-30 minutes of the day and it just kept getting a little faster as it broke in more.
