  • In this episode, a Gen X Radiohead-fan father and his Gen Z Radiohead-illiterate son react, for the first time, to The Smile's Pana-vision to determine if it contributes to the father's hypothesis...that Radiohead is the greatest band of all time.

This song is great. Love that it’s in 7/4 as well. Odd time signatures just hit differently sometimes. When the piano chords hit a little after Thom starts singing, that’s when I’m sucked in.
As for the best rock voice debate, it’s a tough one. I might say Thom Yorke has the most haunting voice, which I actually think is a huge accomplishment. Sometimes I can almost feel it in my bones. Jeff Buckley probably gets my vote for the best rock voice, though. Perhaps another artist you could react to.

It's awesome to see you guys getting into The Smile, hope you can do the whole album! I think Thin Thing or A Hairdryer would be good next steps.

This is a great video. My favourite thing about it is watching Scott’s face, and watching him smile as the various key changes and rhythmic ambiguities unfold. The whole album is fantastic and is a worthy member of the Radiohead (related) collection. My favourite track is “Free In The Knowledge” and I recommend it to your channel. Thanks guys.

Enjoy seeing you guys doing The Smile. I only bought the CD 2 weeks ago .. i know CD old school but i like to own the CD and artwork stuff. and not just have a download..The whole album is great and on my first listen The Smoke was the track that when it finished i went played it second time straight away before continuing the rest. Would love to see you guys react to early Arctic Monkeys like A Certain Romance or Brianstorm as they my second fav band behind Radiohead. And as we get to hear whats your fav Radiohead song soon i was thinking maybe it was The National Anthem which is a f**king great song but not beautiful as you describe. So now thinking Nude or House of Cards. Happy Birthday Scott .. Enjoying the channel guys.

Glad you finally got round to The Smile and enjoyed it. This has a very cinematic jazz feel to it. It did feature on the final episode of Peaky Blinders.
Personally I don’t point to HTTT when I listen to the album. It may be a bit of a cop out, but I feel I can hear a bit of each album since Kid A.
I’m going to recommend Mansun to yourselves. They were about in the mid to late 90’s until the early 00’s. Wide Open Space was their most well known track, which would be a great introduction to them, however I would recommend either Disgusting, Legacy or I Can Only Disappoint U. On a little side note, I got my username from one of their tracks.

Scratch Disgusting. There’s a bit of language at the start.

I cannot stand Radiohead and would not have heard this but for the last episode of "The Perky Blinders" TV series.

As soon as I heard this, I was intrigued by it. I used Soundhound to find out who it was, then I went to iTunes and bought it.
I love it. It's very emotive and atmospheric. My one and only Radiohead (The Smile) song. I listened to the other tracks, and...
    …meh!
But the penultimate version is wonderful:
    "As it all pans wide
    Forget everything you knew
    Forget everything you knew
    As it all pans wide
    "
I'm a Yes, King Crimson, (old) Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Who, Weather Report fan. And Steve Roach and Robert Rich's Ambient albums.

Just found out today that this Album and the Smile exists . This is like a lot of Radioheads music,, i have to listen a couple of times to see if it stays with me.
Like the Kid A/Amnesiac was this much talked about U-turn, where Thom discovered Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, this electronica vibes that he wanted to mix with his music, they also discovered Sigur Rós at that time, around 1999 -2000. Everything in its right place from Kid A had the electronica vibe but on songs like Pyramid Song and his falsetto singing style overall , i think, included influence from Sigur Rós singer and records nr 2 and 3 from them. Radiohead invited them to be their back up band on a europe tour for 10 days in that era. I would like to hear you guys cover Pyramid Song(2001) and if you are interested, listen to some Sigur Rós, Ágætis Byrjun from1999 or ( ) from 2002 because those were the records Sigur Rós were touring with at the time. I also am very fond of hearing Krautrock influences from that time on.
I think what Radiohead does better then any other is to cross genras and mix to create, contiue to push music forward. That requers huge balls.

eh, Pana-Vison as first listen was kinda a weird choice, imo it's a middle of the road song for this album.
    here my definitive song ranking:
    Amazing:
    1. Thin Thing
    2. Free in the Knowledge
    3. A Hairdryer
    4. The Opposite
    Good:
    5. You Will Never Work in Television again
    6. The Smoke (award for most HTTT like song goes to this one)
    7. Speech Bubbles
    8. Pana-vision
    9. We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings
    Mediocre:
    10. Waving A White Flag
Bad (these are love it or hate it songs, you might like em, but I don't):
    11. Skirting on the Surface
    12. Open the Floodgates
    13. The Same

Pana-vision has been spoilt for me recently by watching the video with Cillian Murphy where he try’s and fails to look charismatic. Thin Thing, A Hairdryer or Skrting On The Surface far more interesting songs from the album.

    • @mizzymo64
      @mizzymo64 Год назад

The song was used in the final minutes of the last episode of Peaky Blinders. Murphy wasn't trying to look "charismatic". It was a great choice of music for a sad ending to a tragic character.

  • @colemandias3212
    @colemandias3212 2 года назад

Big sad. It's not a bad song, but I haven't found a Smile song I really like. I'm a pure listener and can't identify 7/4 and key changes and all that jazz, so I can't fully appreciate the technicality on that level. But sonically, this song gets a 4/10 from me. Really wanted to like the smile, but horribly depressed with what I've heard.
    Sorry if unpopular opinion haha
