    Jonny's use of delay is incredible. It sounds so "robotic" due to how he uses delay. The delay is timed so by the time he's hitting the next note it's creating these patterns that sound more like a sequencer than a human. While he's hitting three notes we are hearing six due to the timing of the delay repeats and his attack on the first note. The Opposite from this album is my fucking favorite when it comes to his delay. Seeing it live was a peak moment for me.

    Nigel Godrich is their producer since i belive Ok Computer, and has been working with them ever since, even in Thom's solo works. I don't know how he does it but everything he touches sounds AMAZING, probably my biggest inspiration when it comes to mixing

    • @EasyCartoonDrawingTutorials
      @EasyCartoonDrawingTutorials Год назад +5

      I agree, but not everything he touches is great - in recent albums he has a tendency to make everything sound super cold and robotic, especially in the dynamics of the drums. Identikit was amazing live but the studio version is stripped of live. Also King Of Limbs is pretty poorly mixed. But luckily The Smile record has lots of human warmth in it.

      It’s not a loop, it’s just a delay pedal with a single repeat, and he mutes the string after each strike so it sounds uncanny, but he’s actually playing a riff. Just three notes for every six you hear.

    I just listened back to back your listen/review of Radiohead’s “There There” and this song, and I’m just blown away by how the two songs are at least 20 years apart. Johnny and Thom are still sounding as fresh and engaged as they were DECADES ago. it’s not that many artists don’t keep making great music, but often they lose some electricity they had when young. But the Smile has super-invigorated them. They’re middle-aged kids.

    Great reaction Geebz! Love your observation about a "comfort zone" tone anchoring the insanely inventive guitar and drum work on this track. Love _Thin Thing._
    The video was created by Chiléan artists/filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña who must know _Radiohead's_ music intimately, as there are some great references throughout their brilliant animation. Would love to hear your take on some of the other tracks on _The Smile_ album _A Light for Attracting Attention._
    The live shows are incredible, and they're writing and performing brand new songs while they're touring - which are even _more_ amazing, if that's possible! _It_ and _Bending Hectic_ are stunning, and my favourites so far, but they're all fantastic. Everyone is clamouring for _Teleharmonic Phaser,_ which featured very briefly during a pivotal scene in the British TV series _Peaky Blinders._ Their beautiful album track _Pana-Vision_ also closed the series to dramatic effect.
    I saw _The Smile_ in London this year, but lucky North American fans getting to hear more new material as they tour live this winter. Enjoy guys! 🙂

    Came about during lockdown where Thom and Jonny still wanting to make music together with the covid restrictions in place (i guess the rest of Radiohead were happy chilling) and so formed The Smile with Tom skinner - a jazz drummer. I think it’s up there with some of Radiohead’s best work and could quite easily have been a Radiohead album. In fact, the last track ‘Skrting on the Surface’ has been played at Radiohead shows for many years off and on.
