It still strangely feels like a secret. I don’t believe that Gen Z has much exposure. I spoke to a couple of just 20 years olds and they knew the name… heard ‘Creep’ but knew nothing else and they were music fans… even nerds.
You're right about their specific sound. When my cat was badly hurt and recovering confined to an enclosure, one of the things that soothed him was the sound of Radiohead.
I couldn't be more happy and grateful that you reviewed another Radiohead track. Man... the depths of where you can go through listening to their songs are limitless. If you would accept another Radiohead suggestion, I'd go for Life in a Glasshouse. I reckon you'd love it. Cheers Geebz!!! And thank you 🙏

@@danwebb1756I was wasn’t really comparing their music, it’s just cool that they came up at the same time and I think they have a lot of similarities in their personalities
I gotta be honest, I open up the wine on a Friday night, put any Radiohead song and my head just blows, no other band makes me feel that way, oh, by the way, can’t wait for the second The Smile album
Hehe I love how you were about to say Pop Rock and then went no no don't shoot me wait! And like you say, it is very hard to put Radiohead under one type of music. Excluding the first two albums which had more of an alt Rock tone, they really are their own sub-genre. They were largely inspirational for many subgenres that came about in the last 20 to 25 years. LOVE your work by the way! You are truely a legend!
So glad to see you back at Radiohead! Still a wealth of material to discover. I could suggest the delicate and lovely ‘Daydreaming’ to give you a taste of their latest material, in which Jonny’s classical score work is becoming more prevalent. ‘Subterranean Homesick Alien’ is also a wonderful song that is sometimes overlooked. Stay well.
Because the song followed verse/chorus 1-2, alternative, chorus 3 I wouldn't consider this track progressive, but I would definitely call it alternative. Even though they fit into the pop song pattern they make it sound really unorthodox with strange chord progressions. It's definitely progressive in that sense, so I get what you mean when you say "psychedelic/progressive". Radiohead never seems exactly like other music groups. I think it's just because they do their own scrappy ideas and don't end up falling into cliché.
Idk personally I never felt that the song structure was the determining factor over whether something is progressive or not. I.e. you can follow the traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge etc model, and still be a total prog band if your rhythms or harmonies or melodies are prog. And in reverse, I can easily imagine a pop artist breaking that song layout while still remaining extremely pop... This is a progressive rock song. Radiohead is a progressive rock band. No matter how much they themselves might try to deny it. They of course incorporate many other genres, but progressive rock is the core of it, and this song is a great example of that IMO
Glad to see you still at it Geebz. Youve come a long way. I remeber when you listened to Sober through the speakers on your computer or something. Now you got this fancy set up. Wow, I've not heard this for years. Thom's voice haunts and mesmerises, fragile yet direct. As you note without those tuned (to perfection) toms where would it be? They seem to cement the whole tone of the piece, it's very clever.
You should listen more experimental Radiohead songs, like Bloom; The Separator; Everything In Its Right Place; Kid A; idioteque; Stand Up, Sit Down; Packt Like Sardines In a Crushd Tin Box; Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief. Yorke, with his peroxide blond hair, was asked if his music was ‘pop’ to which he answered: “Yesss,” he says slowly. “My definition of pop is tapping into something,” Yorke added. “My ideal pop song is one that says something people want to hear lyrically and that grabs them by the neck musically - and one that has some sort of depth that moves it beyond a happy tune that you whistle at work.” Discussing specific material that he considers in the realm of pop, the Radiohead singer added: “Songs like ‘Under Pressure’, something that makes you want to fall down on your knees. That to me is the perfect pop song.”
Man, I love Radiohead... The beat of the song is really similar to Björk's 'Human Nature'. I'm not a patron, but I would love to see an analysis of a Shiner song, like 'In The End' or 'Life As A Mannequin'.

Took me forever to get into this track, because I always skipped it before the amazing transition came in. This becomes the core of the song which allows you to really appreciate the slow-burn at the start. This is basically the last great band to me. I mean in the sense of Nirvana/Beatles etc.
I love your Tool comparison. I’ve always felt the same way, but could never verbalize it like you did. Great comparison. They are the same, yet completely different.
Thank you for always putting me in a positive head space with your reactions. Awesome selection. Basking in your knowledge is one of my favorite things.
I think "alternative rock" covers it. Those are the radio stations that streamed Radiohead back in the 90's and occasionally to this day. "Alternative" is certainly one waying of describing Radiohead's contrarian style (like moving away from verse-chorus-verse lyrics, weird time signatures, etc.). They made it big then discovered their niche.
Very Nice choice of song to react to and the video is also amazing. I absolutely love the band and have done for years so fantastic live they are. I always call Radiohead art rock, but Thom has self identified them as a pop band in the past so it's OK to call them that! They're pop in the way Bjork and David Bowie are pop.
i'm not a producer so I don't know the lingo, but I love how Radiohead can simultaneously sound so futuristic and slick, while also being tactile and organic. Like you can really hear the intimacy of the instruments and voices etc. Like Beatles before them... I think the producer was a significant part of their sound and success. I'd call Radiohead a form of psychedelic art-rock (vague I know). It's progressive as well, but confined usually within 4-5 mins which I appreciate. They get their statement across without rushing nor over dwelling. I understand the Tool comparison. They were my fav band for years but now I think i prefer Radiohead (at least in terms of listening time). They just have that much more variety when it comes to melody and song structure. Tool has a great sound... but they so often refer to the same "bag of tricks" so to speak. They're amazingly good at that bag of tricks of course.
I remember seeing this video on MTV circa 2003. Radiohead loves to play this song live, because Ed & Jonny get to play some drums. I bet you they've played it at every concert they've done in the past 20 years. Lol. As far as I know, the only song that makes it into every setlist.
I remember hearing the live bootlegs before "Hail to the Thief" came out and it was apparent even then that "There, There" was going to be something special. HTTT isn't my favorite Radiohead record (not an uncommon, although also certainly NOT universal, point of view among Radiohead fans), but "There There" is up there among my favorite of their singles. Speaking of the original bootlegs, one change Radiohead made to the arrangement between the original live versions and the album recording was to hold off on Jonny Greenwood's bright chiming guitar lick in the bridge until Thom's vocals come back in. (Previously, it started during the instrumental break at the beginning of the bridge.) I remember originally disliking this change, since I was used to the "old" version from the bootlegs, but after a couple of listens, it clicked how shifting the lead guitar line to match the re-entry of the vocals really jolted up the intensity of that part of the song even though the actual dynamics haven't increased. It helps define the buildup from the chill instrumental break, through the vocal part of the bridge, and then completely exploding once the guitar solo really begins and Phil Selway shifts from his toms to the snare. (And not for nothing, it also helps accentuate the rhythm guitar that Thom plays during the initial instrumental break, which is funky as shit.)
I may have been missing out on one aspect of listening to them and that is with headphones. Almost strategically focused. Only loud with large 70’s Hifi! I will make a correction for that in the future. Feels like another world is waiting. The texture is insane. This video looked to be the inspiration for Wes Anderson’s ‘The Fantastic Mr Fox’.
