- This one took a bit of extra focus today. 😅 This is my first time featuring Radiohead on the channel, and we're starting with the official video for the song "Paranoid Android."

The animation is based on a Swedish series called Robin. English-dubbed versions were showing on Channel 4, and Radiohead were a big fan of it, so they commissioned its creator to create the music video around the adventures of his characters.
They gave him an instrumental-only version of the song and wouldn't let him hear or read the lyrics, as they wanted him to create something that fit the mood without being a literal retelling of the song.
I always wondered why the video fit the tone of the song, but never really matched what was being sung. Thanks for the info 👍
It was a thing in the 90s that music video directors would add some motif to match the lyrics, and it would come across as cheesy. One funny story I like is the video for the song Headhunter by Front 242 is packed with Egg imagery because the director misheard the song title as "Egg Hunter".
The live performance on Jools Holland might've allowed you to examine the physicality of Thom Yorke's vocal performance.
You beat me to it! 👍
You are so correct. In my opinion, that is the best live performance of this song.
For sure, it's own performance but just as good as the recorded version. Playing fancy guitar while singing too.
Absolutely agree. I recommend this too, and posted the link. I live this version.
I agree!
I would strongly suggest looking into their song Fake plastic trees. It is often overlooked but it's a masterpiece of a composition and a great showcase of Thom's vocal range and ability.
Yes, she would have a lot to dig into with analyzing his vocals on Fake Plastic Trees.
Often overlooked? It's literally one of the most popular Radiohead songs lol
Overlooked. Their most famous ballad. Was really popular when it came out and has remained as one of the most known Radiohead song, in the mainstream along with Creep, High and Dry.
You should fake plastic trees, its definitely one of his best vocally 🙂
It’s an incredible song but it’s far from overlooked. An overlooked track is worrywort for example
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around what I’m hearing and seeing.”
Welcome to Radiohead 😂
Radiohead LIVE FROM THE BASEMENT series: weird fishes/arpeggi & where I end and you begin to start with to see just how good his vocal and their perfectionist instrumentation is.
Great series. Echo this suggestion.
This is the comment to believe in 🤙
Wierd fishes for sure! This performance was amazing. The harmonies give me chills
House of cards
Yes please
I envy you so much listening to radiohead for the first time. I promise, going down this rabbit hole will not disappoint you.
If I had to put it into words what I like most about Radiohead, it's that their style is always evolving, always diverting expectations. If you've listened to one Radiohead song, you're far from understanding their style. That said, it's always interesting and always worth a listen.
You can't imagine what it feels like to sing at a concert with all the people and Thom the "rain down" part. One of the best musical experiences of my life.
And for me, it actually started raining. Everyone went wild and even Thom kinda shrugged and smiled.
„When I am King you will be first against the wall“ is such a powerful line, infantile and desperate yet revolutionary, and Thom Yorke delivering those lyrics is spot on.
But don't forget the rest of the sentence: "with your opinion, which is of no consequence at all"
First against the wall is origialy from Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, Whch is where Marvin the Paranoid Android is from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing devision of the Sirius Cybernetic Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes,” "
@@stoatystoat174first against the wall predates hhgttg
@@Jeremy-hx7zj Yeah but they have talked about it alot that they were reading HitchHikersGuide to the Galaxy during the Ok Computer session. I think that they said that they took Karma police from there as well (maybe I am wrong on that one) maybe that was a phrase that they were just carrying around in the tourbus at the time.
Still get goosebumps after nearly 30yrs....
This whole album is magic
The rain down section live at Glastonbury as a deluge dropped from the sky was something else
“Nude” by Radiohead from the Live From the Basement series is a killer track that really puts Thom’s voice front and center. 🔥
Particularly if you enjoy his falsetto.
I agree. But doesn't have to be from the Live From the Basement version. His voice shines just as well on the album version of In Rainbows.
The very subtle vibrato during the sustained vocals is exquisite. Something you will grow to appreciate on repeat hearings...OK computer.
I would suggest reacting to the entire OK Computer album as a whole rather than a few songs.
Definitely. The whole album is a full experience end to end.
Yep
I'd agree with that. Musically and vocally one of the most creative and awe-inspiring albums I've ever heard.
Absolutely agree!
Agree 100% its like a book and the whole thing has to be experienced.
Jigsaw Falling Into Place is also pretty good too. Thanks!
This song really has many different voices of Thom that you rarely find all in the same song. Particularly the vocal decisions for given phrases and also the progression of the song itself.
This is the song to showoff Thom's vocal range for sure
One of my favourite radiohead vocals is, for my fellow oldies, from a show called MTVs most wanted and they covered 'Nobody does it better' by Carly Simon. It's ludicrous how much power and spite he puts in and totally changes the meaning of the song.
Thanks for the suggestion, gotta check it out!
I absolutely love Thom Yorke's voice. If you haven't heard "The Mess We're In" - his duo with PJ Harvey on the album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea - it is INCREDIBLE.
Radiohead is a self-contained genre.
Also, you need to listen to the whole
album start to finish, it's an experience.
Honestly, there’s a live performance of “Nude” where the vocal performance is just exceptional. He’s definitely one of the greatest vocalists to have ever lived, to say nothing of his composition skills!
i would agree with you. But watch Buckley perform on one of these festival from the 90's (don't remember which one) Where he is performing Eternal Life. That guy was really on a another level. Not just vocal ability. An amazing artist with his voice and songwriting. . But yes Thom is an amazing songwriter and as well as, a vocalist. You could already hear that on Pablo Honey on either "You" or "Anyone play guitar" or the obvious. In the middle part on "Creep".
@@Atlas65 totally agree that Buckley was something else. Not seen that particular performance but I’ve seen a few and he was unreal.
@@Atlas65 After seeing him live, Jeff Buckley inspired Thom when struggling with the sound in High and Dry.
@@jcora444 I'm pretty sure that the story was was actually about Fake Plastic Trees. They say after seeing Buckley live they came back into the studio, Thom sang Fake Plastic Trees and after finishing the recording he broke down and cried. Although I find it kind of strange. That they said that Thom was inspired to use his falsetto after seeing Buckley on this gig. While he was already using his signature falsetto sound on Creep. Which I think that he was originally inspired to copying some what of Bono's style. Since Bono used it as well before Thom, and Thom used it in the same manner. As you can hear if you listen closely that most of Thom's vocal style is take from Bono's vocal style. Especially in the early days. With a tint of Johnny Rotten from Sex pistols. He quite often, even to this day, channels Johnny Rotten into his vocal style, even to this day.
@@Atlas65 Perhaps it was Fake Plastic Trees. I thought I remembered High and Dry. Could be wrong.
There are a lot of amazing recommendations in the comments already but i have to add Radiohead - Nude (live from the basement) to the list. It is such an incredibly interesting performance with a heavy focus on the vocals and Thoms singing is truly angelic. His vocal riffs towards the end give me goosebumps every time.
YES
Any “basement” performance is amazing. Yes! Nude is a must.
9:45 when he sings 'This' I am hearing him sing it level for two beats, vibrato on the third beat, the vibrato becoming level on the fourth beat, then doing all those steps again over beats 5,6,7,8 then opening into a wider slow vibrato to finish the word ,
Thats a lot of work for one sylable
It's "that".
You need to do "Exit Music (For a film)" next.
Thom Torke vocals on No Surprises is some of his best work. I love Radiohead and I really enjoy your vocal analysis.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing devision of the Sirius Cybernetic Corporation as "a bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes,”
Bethany, I'm a new fan of yours. Love your facial expressions, your voice, your smile, and especially your love and sensitivity for the art of music.
Would definitely love seeing you performing.
Oh this is too cool. Nice choice. Love your channel. My favorite vocal analysis channel by FAR.
I love listening to people listen to this song.
I was really waiting for this video, Paranoid Android is my favorite song!! :3
One of my favorite voices of all time. His voice can move my emotions all around regardless of the words he is saying. love this song so much.
I'm so impressed you mentioned the wavering note that we feel will lead to vibrato. You take it all in --- impressive on a major scale!
Haha, the look on your face towards the end of that music video was something else :D as always, another great reaction from you.
It's always great to see people's first reaction to Paranoid Android. The song itself is brilliant, and the video is an experience. I still remember sitting on the couch, seeing it for the first time and being mesmerised.
I was also on a couch
It was 2 am and I was with my dog, i also had insomnia.
Something made me decide to listen to radiohead and paranoid android was the first song to listened to
I'm so glad I did it.
Part III 😮 Really digging the Bass work on this especially just before "the drop"!! Bass and guitar going together NICE!! ♾️
'cool animation' haha this is one of the wildest music videos, and was of course super controversial at the time.
I would definitely suggest listening to OK Computer in one sitting, as it is conceptual and the songs all flow together to an extent. Not that you have to do an album reaction, as that'd be difficult, but I do think this is one of the best albums of all time.
Thom has a very unique timbre and style, so I would really love to see more Radiohead reactions! You could of course also do No Surprises, Karma Police, Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Daydreaming, Fake Plastic Trees, Just, etc.
I've been lucky enough to see Radiohead live twice, once for 'In Rainbows' (Vancouver) and once for 'A Moon Shaped Pool' (Berkeley), and I dare say they were spiritual experiences lol
Love this reaction!! For vocals…there are soooo many amazing Radiohead songs out there.
For live vocals, some of the best recordings are Live From The Basement. Their In Rainbows Album.
Also, there is a 95 or 97 Tv Live recording of him singing their song “Street Spirit” where they perform a more acoustic version. This REALLY shows his lovely vocals as well. ❤❤
I feel inspired by how you come across, you seem very salt of the earth :) There is something you seem to have (and i can't pin point it) but i wish i had more of. Love the videos! Greetings from The Netherlands.
I hear the influence of Jeff Buckley's album Grace in how he's wobbling on and off the pitch, and in some of the guitar sounds.
Apparently he said seeing Jeff Buckley live gave him the confidence to sing falsetto. He came back to the studio after seeing him play live one night and recorded Fake Plastic Trees in one take.
Rabbit in your Headlights - Unkle.
Proper dark pop
agreed
Surprised there wasn’t more attention paid to the multipart harmonies in the bridge section…such beautiful lines layered in below the main three vocal parts
Greetings from Peru, I love seeing your reactions :)
Radiohead have so many great songs, and sounds. Been one of my favourite bands for the last 30 years.
love the last 'what's that' in the second verse before the change. So emotional.
Thoroughly enjoyed your analysis, but even more those facial expressions. Also, your hair looks so amazing with the natural greys. I apologize if it's not grey 😅
Hello! Paranoid android it's an outstanding musical composition, but if you want to hear the insane range of Thom Yorke vocals you should listen to the "From the Basment - In Rainbows" version of "Nude". It's a live preformance in a studio environment. The hole performance it's an amazing oportunity to appreciate the insane potential of every member of Radiohead live, but in this particular piece: "Nude", the vocals are like coming from a intermittent celestial/obscure, hipnotic looking instrument XD, his movements, the progressions, the choices, the timing, the subtlety/finesse, the power, plus the power of the choices, it's like it's telling a story with his voice beside the words, being the main instrument of the piece (for me): his voice. Love to see you react to that song!
Radiohead are a band that has something for everybody and a ton of VERY passionate fans, as I'm sure you could tell, which means that any time a channel like this one starts getting into them they are going to be absolutely *buried* with recommendations for what to listen and react to next, because each person has a different favorite song or specific performance. That said, I will toss another vote for the From the Basement version of Nude (I believe I even made a recommendation for it once on a different video a while back). I don't think there's any performance where he showcases his range and technical ability better, I can't think of a better song of theirs to suit this channel's focus. If you want to do any more Radiohead, you can't go wrong with that one.
Separate from this channel's main thrust, just from a pure musical enjoyment standpoint, I do just recommend listening to the entire In Rainbows From The Basement performance, even just on your own time (this goes for everybody). What a treat of a performance.
Hearing Thom live is like seeing a picture of a sunset as opposed to seeing a sunset in person. His voice sounds better live.
Interesting note about learning the placement of the notes - when I'm rehearsing for a stageplay I slowly pronounce every word but exaggerating the consonants because that's where we tend to be lax in our tongue placement and skim over certain sounds like 'k' and 't' so by the time I've done it a few times painfully slowly inunciating the first and last consonant of each word, by the time I do it at normal speed it's effortless.
I fast forwarded quickly just to see you reaction to the Rain Down section ^_^
Live is phenomenal.
I think you would find their song The Tourist interesting vocally. It almost has a droning melody, but the harmonies and the belting in the chorus are so dynamic.
Love hearing the way you break down the vocals, really makes /me/ see the song a lot differently! Would love to hear your take on the band The SLot, specifically their song mirrors (in English). Also I think you would get a kick out of Montaigne and their song Technicolor. Keep up the great work 👍
Would love to hear your thoughts on Sinead O'Conner's Troy. She had such a unique and emotive voice, and I love that song in particular.
in my opinion one of if not the best albums of the 90s! was OK Computer! just pure genius!
I think tou did a good job of analysing this song. If you want to go deeper into Tom York's vocals i would suggest tou react to the song called "Nude" live at the basement. This performance will highlight all of his vocal techniques...
My favorite Radiohead song ever ❤
I was lucky to see them on the OK Computer tour in Blackpool, England in the late nineties. He’s even better live.
One song to maybe listen to is How To Disappear on the KID A album. Superb vocals.
And thanks for what you do too 👍😄
Recommend Reckoner, Nude or There There amongst many, many others.
Great analysis. Thom Yorke performed Ingenue live on Jonathan Ross. It's not powerful but fully displays how much control he has.
Thunk you for this song😊😊
One of my favourite albums of all time
One of the greatest songs ever put to the world ❤❤
Ok Computer is my pick for best 90's album as well as one of the greatest concept albums ever made. The Bends is a great album as well.
That part when you said that it doesn't really sound like he is singing. That is where Thom is doing his Johnny Rotten (from Sex Pistols) or channeling Johnny Rotten if you will. He does it alot now and then. You can really hear it in Bodysnatcher on In Rainbows.
i HIGHLY recommend checking out their performance of "In Rainbows" From The Basement 2008
Thank ya dear ❤
I've listened to the whole album hundreds of time over the years, my favourite vocals are in 'Exit Music' and 'The Tourist'.
In Exit Music, you can even hear his lips make contact in the early stage.
Karma police is one of my favorites
mine is too
Your first experience should have definitely been live... Check out the jools Holland show this track live it's a masterclass in live performance !
It blew me away.
Not related to this video but I have been enjoying your videos very much. I was wondering (could not find them) if you have ever done a video for the band Deftones? Just a little background from what I know.....I see you have reviewed a few of the bands from the later 90s like Likin Park and Korn, which are fine. Deftones were kinds before them, they were around much longer. Their use of rap/hip is more subtle but they kinda had scratching turntables and all that way back in the early 90s. They never got (I think by choice) as big as those other bands but are just incredible. I think you would really like the emotion in the singers voice. As a bonus, they have songs that were produced by the singer of Tool. They have an amazing song called Passenger that features him singing (I know you like him). Their album White Pony is often considered their best.
Thom has complete and utter control of his voice, he is magnificent in his craft
Live from the Basement is the way to introduce a vocal coach to Radiohead ❤
just nailed it.
I love radio head ❤❤
I heard that this was Thom's first and only take for the main vocal track? If that is true, it is incredible!
This song was released in 1997. There wouldn't have been any pitch correction. I don't think they ever used it later either.
Lots of great Thom vocal performances. Some of mentioned “Nude.” Absolutely. I would also look at various live versions of “Idoteque,” and then also “Myxomatosis” which is entirely in his low-register, but in one of the hardest rocking tracks Radiohead has done.
Very nice song, very strange video...gorgeous Bethany
Weird fishes, Nude, Jigsaw falling into place
I’d love to see an analysis of “Nude” or my low key favorite from OK Computer “Let Down”.
When listening to an extremely talented band like Radiohead, I always opt for the live performances. Great bands always sound better live than canned.
Thom Yorke makes music that is better than his natural voice ability. He is an intelligent musician who uses his imperfect voice perfectly. It is like watching an old blues guitarist who can rip on the ax choose to solo on a harmonica or a studio drummer rock a bucket on a curb.
By contrast, singers like Vedder and Cornell who have so much natural vocal ability it oozes out of them do not have to be as intentional.
Radiohead reminds me every time I listen that it is the broken parts of us that make us special.
So sorry but I couldn't disagree more. Seeing them perform this live on the Jools Holland is so incredible (ruclips.net/video/NzPtr_n-m8A/видео.html) . If anything, the animation is distracting.
Yes there is to much going on. And it takes away from the song. The music almost comes across as a background with the video.
# 오늘도 홧팅 🍒🙆♂️))
I was trying to think of a good recommendation for you, I think Kalopsia by Queen's of the Stoneage would be a great experience , also has Trent Reznor on vocals so give you another chance to hear him too. 😊
I'd love to hear your reaction to anything off Kip Winger's "This Conversation Seems Like A Dream", say "Naked Son" or "Steam"
I can only recommend more Radiohead. They are a band that very much morphed their music through time, yet always managed to retain their own sound. And Thom Yorke is an amazing singer. There's some beautiful less chaotic songs like 'No Suprises' from OK Computer. Later albums become more a mix of electronic gadgets mixed with Prog Rock. Radiohead to me always coneys a sense of alienation and melancholy with the world which I personally I can very much relate too. Thom's Solo projects are also very much worth listening to.
I pretty much like everything Radiohead, but personal Favourite songs are "How to Dissapear completely" "The Pyramid Song" "Hail to the Thief" and "Moonshaped Pool". though my favourite songs tend to change. I highly recommend diving into their discography even in your own time, cause there are so many gems of songs in there.
Thom Yorke is an amazing singer, his falsetto would take you to another dimension
Very good
Best rock music ever !
Thom Yorke - Bloom (Live from Electric Lady Studios) is well worth a listen. In Rainbows From the Basement is a great showcase of the whole band.
Other songs from the same album (OK Computer) that I recommend you react to:
- Subterranean Homesick Alien
- Exit Music
thom yorke is a genius and i recommend anything from their 'from the basement' performances its a masterpiece.
Believe me, seeing this live was life changing! Creep is lovely, I still love it, bit understand their unwillingness to, oh shit, I have had a skull fra 23:20 bit wrong.
Any way, Nick Cave. Take it where you want!
It's art
Radiohead is huge rabbit hole. A few songs with great vocals: Nude, How To Disappear Completely, Pyramid Song, Sail To The Moon and Present Tense.
I want to suggest for you to watch Thom Yorke's solo, piano rendition of a Radiohead song called, "Bloom," recorded at Electric Lady studios. Or/also, his solo song "Suspirium" from the same session at Electric Lady. In both you can better hear the magic of his voice without the (important, wonderful, inspiring but somewhat distracting when doing a vocal analysis) overlay of guitars, drums, and such. Lastly, try the live version (from the Johnathan Ross show) of "Ingenue" where again it is just Thom and a piano. But truly, any of the suggestions made in the comments are bound to be bangers. I've been a fan of Radiohead since the first time I heard a couple of their demo songs on a college rock station played by an exchange student via England, around 1990. That's nearly 35 years ago!
You might want to try Weird Fishes/Arpeggi from In Rainbows, there are some incredible harmonies and backing vocals from Ed O'Brien
The animation was done by and featured the characters of the cult 90's animation series Dr. Katz.
Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead is an absolute must for understanding Thom Yorke's range and emotion... Or Nude, from the 'in rainbows' album. 😊
Great video as always! Would love to see you react to something by Animal Collective, like their song Peacebone, Brother Sport, or The Purple Bottle. Avey Tare has a fascinating voice that I would be curious to get your take on.
More Radiohead reactions! suggestions: Street spirit, There There, House of cards, I promise
PLEASE do more radiohead please god
