    I made a dish soap in a similar style, though not identical. I made it lemon scented, with lemon zest powder as an abraisive and annatto color infused into the oil, and around 6% castor oil to help the lather. Also mine is in 2oz muffins rather than big blocks. Anyway, I'm very pleased with it so far, and I agree that low-superfat coconut oil soap is good for dishes.

    I use this dish soap and I love it! It lasted a long time, but I would definitely get a draining soap dish. My little sisters came to visit and didn't drain the dish soap whole they were here and it went fast on that week haha but it lasted months beforehand and I think will last longer with a soap dish. And it does a fantastic job of cutting through grease. I was skeptical at first, but this works so well, I'm hooked!

  • @critter9857
    @critter9857 7 месяцев назад +1

    Coconut Oil is the most cleansing oil and at 0% superfat there is no fat left in your saponified soap which means no clogging the drains or your washing macine or your septic tank. To add color, take a bit of your already measured melted soap and put in a dish/ bowl/small measuring cjp amd mix in your color and keep the oil warm. Blend oil and lye water mixture to trace, medium and add your color and blend more to make sure the lye saponifies that oil as well. Dump in molds, let dry. From what I understand 1 Tbsp of citric acid ( i would put food grade) is mixted with lye water without adjusting either lye or water measurements. Let Dry approx 2 to 4 hrs and cut into blocks or bars, if u wait to long the soap log will get very hard. 😊

      Hi! Citric acid is a decent addition said to lower the pH of soap, though in my tests I haven’t found it changes it much. I’ve added citric acid in the lye water or as a second liquid phase at up to 3% of my oil weight without issue. Hope that helps!

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  3 года назад +2

      Ha - I wish I could take credit, but this is just basic chemistry at work. When you approach soapmaking from that vein, everything comes together nicely. Normally I put my soap nuts directly into my lye solution, so that 180 degree + heat does a nice job extracting the awesome before adding it to the oils.

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! Soap nuts are dried shells of a shrub berry - related to lychee. I think they became popular in crunchy circles as a way to wash your clothing instead of using laundry soap. Personally I don’t find that they are particularly cleansing on their own, but they do aide in lather and help to minimize soap scum and build up when paired with the appropriate oils in a soap recipe. :)

      Hey! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done anything with tallow, but from my remembrance I think tallow has a longer fatty acid chain, leading to a creamier lather. For this reason, I wouldn’t substitute all of the coconut in a dish soap for tallow as you really want that extra bubble when cleaning dishes. But you could try a 50/50 split and see what comes of it!

Is it supposed to smell HORRIBLE? It immediately smelled like hot steamy nasty wet dog. I went through with the batch and it's also super dark. Hey! I don’t actually find it to be drying, but my hands are washed 1000 times a day and are impervious to most everything. In our consumer testing, nobody reported dry hands. Also, this particular recipe is used for 20+ grocery store wholesale accounts, and they all keep buying copious amounts of them with no skin drying reports, so I assume that it’s not bad for most individuals. But I dunno! Everyone’s skin is different, and a zero percent superfat on coconut oil is supposed to be drying.

      That is correct! I mean, technically speaking that’s true of most soaps. Once saponification has completed, the bar has no more lye and is safe to use. Cure time is for losing of the water weight and the hardening of the bar and the doing of the things. With a soap like this, cure time is not the standard 4-6 weeks though - it won’t benefit from a long cure. :)

      So I don’t know what benefit witch hazel would have with a dish soap, though I’ve used it for face soaps before! I’ve never added it to the lye solution; I have a feeling that it would react much like alcohols do in lye, so if you do so, use a very big mixing container and freeze the witch hazel. I have some frozen cucumber puree sitting in my freezer from a different soap I did and I'm wondering if I should try throwing that in there as an experiment. Because of all that prep for baby and healing I am super behind on my soaps and am itching to just do a bunch lol I thought about using some tea tree EO in it. Anyhow, thanks for this, I've been wanting to do a dish soap and I'm just about out, the new wave of shut downs has our stores out of everything again, so it's a good time.

    So I made this and it was sitting on the counter and as it was harding it squished up out of the center and made like a horn in the center😬 I don't know why

      It overheated! To avoid that in the future, put it in the freezer or fridge. Have fun!

    Does it leave film on dishes

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  2 года назад

      Nope! Soap nuts assist with that, as well as the lack of superfat and the coconut oil itself.

  • @karan25535
    @karan25535 Год назад

    Hi, good recipe.....just confused about the soapnut.....once soapnut is extracted in boiling water, it's shelf life is 10-15 days.... Will using soapnuts in soapmaking not affect the shelf life of the soap since coconut oil soap is otherwise shelf stable for 1-2 years whereas soapnut extract has a shelf life of 10-15 days without preservatives? Kindly share your thoughts

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  Год назад

      Hi! The shelf life has to do with the water, and because water is chemically changed and/or lost during the curing process, as well as the pH of soap, it has no impact on the shelf life.

      @@MrsSoapAndClay perfect Ma'am :)... in that case, it seems like soapnut extract can also be added to the water for making liquid castile/coconut soap....it will also enhance that.....am i right in assuming so?

    Do you recommend sugar in soaps? I see that you don't add sugar in any of your soaps.

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  Год назад

      I use sugar when it’s needed for extra lather, but I rarely make a batch of soap that would need a lather boost.

    • @danielleecko4154
      @danielleecko4154 Год назад

      @@MrsSoapAndClay I was asking about sugar because I put in every soap I make and it thickens the batter a lot.I use the sugar because I am afraid that there will be not enough lather when I use oleic oils (together with coconut and castor). But i guess it's only a miss-conception of mine. I have to waive it, since I can not make swirls because I always panique about thickening. 🙈

    Could you explain again why this soap doesn't need the 4-6 week curing process? Is it because it is for dishes and not for skin?

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  3 года назад +4

      Hey! I have a few videos on cure time, I think in the FAQ playlist. This concept we have of 4-6 weeks for cure of all soaps really isn’t backed by anything other than the repetition of the statement. The cure time for this one isn’t because it’s for dishes, but because a 100% coconut oil soap doesn’t need very long to fully lose its water weight and be ready for use. Happy soaping!
