As human, we evolved for social interactions. As an introvert, I can go longer without needing to talk but eventually the act of not talking can drive me crazy. I think the point for all of us is to find that happy medium of interaction and productivity. Marie you gave some incredible suggestions! Love this video!

OMG Marie, I've been waiting YEARS for content like this! Most people just talk about how awesome it is to work from home in your pajamas and totally omit the harsh reality of loneliness and lack of human interaction that goes with it. I've been working online as a content creator for the past 6 years and there are days I really do wonder if I am still sane! Worse still, I live in a very small town where there is literally nothing to talk about with the locals unless you're a farmer. Which is why I plan to move as soon as I am financially able to and make my social life a priority - and that's coming from a lifelong introvert! Thanks for the tips and awesomeness :)

Thank you for addressing this Marie! I have been working from home for over five years now and I jokingly call it "solitary confinement"... but it really feels that way sometimes! Since I've worked from home, I've adopted two dogs who bring joy to my lonely days. I also work from a coffee shop at least once a week, go to my gym during my lunch break, and fill my evenings with plans with my husband and/or friends!

Really great tips Marie! When I moved from Brooklyn to Santa Barbara to start my jewelry business full time, I didn't know anyone there so I joined a local museum where they hosted socials, and I met a really great friend right away. From there, she introduced me to meetup and I met tons of new friends and even hosted a few socials to meet new people. I also went to local art events, town events, and got involved with teams and projects with similar interests as me whenever I could. I still felt lonely on occasion but all in all doing those things really helped widen my social circle and now that I've moved to North Carolina, I can say I have friends in Cali for life!

I run a successful business from home, and have found a few ways to take most of the loneliness away. I take a few half hour walks during my work day, and oftentimes end up talking with neighbors. I listen to music or RUclips videos while I do mundane computer work - I find this very soothing and listening to a human voice helps me feel less lonely. When I take a 15-minute break, I'll call a friend or family member and chat. I'll take a short ride to, for example, the post office to pick up my business mail. It gets me out of the house, and changes my mindset. If I have a particularly lonely work day, as soon as my 6:00 closing whistle blows, my husband and I go out on the town, and I have fun and interact with other people.

Great vid Marie! I had the same issue and felt locked in my own home, I started volunteering in my town's school as a teacher for an hour(lunch break)! This helped me feel connected to the community and I was able to help much needy kids with math and I got my social fix as well! I was surprised to see how this small 1 hour ( twice a week) helped me with my creativity and problem solving in general!

Buy some flowers! Ok for me this is the little flower stand up the block, so I take a walk and say hi to the flower stand guy. We chat for a few minutes and I pick out my flowers.. I take home the pretty flowers, and every time I catch a whiff of them it reminds me of my little chat and human interaction, and also masks the fact that I haven't showered :)

These are all great suggestions! I love your videos. I've been working from home for 17 years and it can get lonely if I'm not proactive, especially after moving to the country. I head to the gym during lunch several times per week, plan lunch or coffee breaks with friends or family at least a few times a month and head outside for a walk with my dogs to break up the day. I also met some wonderful new friends taking horseback riding lessons.

I have extreme Social Anxiety, and none of these tips really work for me, but I do appreciate that these ideas might be very helpful for other people. The closest tip to something that might interest me is a gathering of people in my industry. There is a local writer's group that meets up at the library, which is a fairly safe space for me. But they are all so much older than I am, and I tend to take a very flowy and inspiration based approach to writing, and I don't feel like I can relate to them at all. Ah, well. The truth is that I've never felt truly connected in my entire life, so I can't exactly miss it just because I work from home. But just because you're used to loneliness doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.(PS: Like someone else mentioned, that painting is gorgeous!)

I heard a couple of other non-work related factors that might be contributing to Megan's ennui: no friends in her new town and raising kids! Wowy Megan - these two factors are very isolating; you're getting it from all angles. Hang in there! It's gets easier and Marie's advice is dead on. Big Love!!

I'm currently on this situation and the best tip I can give other than what's already been well said on the video is: after some time alone, it's normal to start accustom with the perks of not having to deal with other peoples mannerisms. Having social relationships have pros and cons and its important to fight that instintic. When I realized that, I understood that I was throwing away opportunities to socialize that life was already giving me.

I'm an introvert-extrovert , before working from home I enjoyed to be alone , but now it gets different.
After working 9 months in a company I got really depressed and I missed interaction, I didn't have that much ideas and I was generally feeling exhausted.
I took a break from working and because of my country's economy I accepted a position again in the same company, I'm going to the gym and traveling as much as I can to not feel isolated and hope to eventually make this work

  • @HebattallahHosny

Way to go, girl :) As far as I see it, being an online freelancer, after working 9-to-5 for years, gives the opportunity for social activities that I couldn't do when I came home after a super-long working day drained and exhausted. For one, I couldn't participate in women-only swimming lessons during my full time working days because the lessons were during working hours. Now I can and I'm so grateful that I can. This's just one example...The list goes on...The key is to keep socializing a priority and SCHEDULE it. As Tony Robbins says: "You can SHOULD all over yourself but what you SCHEDULE becomes real!" That's it folks...Trust me, 9-to-5-ivers envy us for our time-flexibility ...USE IT :-)

Awesome tips marie. I used to work from home a LOT when I was working for a corporation. It was tough, and you're right, the only thing I looked forward to during the day was that CrossFit class. But when I was working from home for myself, I just purposely try to enable my smartphone to be able to do everything that my laptop can do and then get out there. Work mobile. Connect your gmail, use time tracker app, update your blog using an app, download a microsoft office app, install a meetme app, get a Bluetooth keyboard. You can pretty much do anything you want on your phone nowadays

Training professional classical musician here (part time orchestra currently). I'm fine during rehearsals which are twice a week (or eventually 5 days a week and a week off) but having finished school full time its been a weird transition. Eating meals away from the office is brilliant... currently living in my parents basement... and I'll probably do that at our lakes.

This is such a trip! Thanks Marie.
Planning social activities became my thing, bringing groups of friends and their kids together for specific holidays throughout the year that are meaningful/fun to me. I also pitched F2F at work... that evolved into a new and super successful program with weekly regular meetings with clients because our clients were feeling the same. And I scheduled in dog walks to go see the non-screen world once a day. And, being an extrovert (but not that much) I got a part-time job that is face to face. It required moving my kids to a newer, bigger town, and renting out my house with ~5 days notice, although it was worth it. I still do online, although I have the other half that I need too. Another thing for those extroverts online... Bigger towns seem to lend themselves a little better to online work and ways to connect, in my experience. Your tweet was golden. My absolute favourite.

loved this video :) i used to work at a small company, 4 people in total with the accountant. the boss was always out of the office and the account was always busy so it was just me and a colleague. we got along fine but only after moving to a slightly larger firm i realised how much i missed interacting with people. I'm an introvert and i'm fine just working in silence for hours but having people around is better, especially since i'm not the one to start a conversation.

I understand where she's coming from. I found as a working writer now that I need to get out to coffee shops, get involved in other things besides writing like hiking (sierra club), having a weekly women's group which discusses everything, acting classes, photography, painting and cooking classes. Also helping other people put together their art shows, going to art openings. As long as it's not online. Connecting in-person is key. And it does not have to be expensive or time consuming. But you have to make time for play, so that you can connect on a different level with your online job.

I can relate big time! Your tips are all right on the money as always Marie. I started working from home full time last summer on my art + design business and as an introvert it works quite well for me. I've learned to balance it out with regular weekly supply sourcing where I spend the whole day out interacting with suppliers and interesting strangers at cafe breaks ;p I also started booking more trade shows, where I really get to meet many amazing folks. My first one I felt like a caged animal who was just set free lol! So the prison reference can be spot on..
Regular hikes and walks with a friend have been super crucial, we need our nature and our girl talk most definitely. My last job was a lot of weekends so now I'm so grateful that I get manage my time the way I want.
    Thank you for you!
    Hugs from Toronto XOXO

I have to agree with the comment below. I work at home. I am a crochet and knitwear designer. I was feel claustrophobic in the house so everyday(I take the bus to save money) I take two busses and I take my crochet or knitting or artwork/ illustration work with me. My first stop is Walmart to get the stuff I need at home. I carry a backpack with 2 zippered compartments. I finish shopping and put purchases in one compartment. Then I go into my favorite craftstore, buy my yarn/art supplies. I get inspired to be more creative seeing what other people in my field are doing. By this time, I need a break, so I go in my favorite coffeeshop/ bookstore, order a coffee , take a seat on the outside patio, pull out my project and work on it. My current project is a Venetian crocheted lace outfit. About thr same time, I arranged for one or more of my artist friends to meet me and sit with me. One is a working artist who does portraits. I used to do this until I got into lacework. Another friend is a lady I met at College who is an artist too. But she likes to handle thr business end of things and takes care of advertising our work and bookkeeping. This has all worked out well. We all attended the same classes but each of us is utilizing different skills to earn money. I think thr best way not to feel isolated is to GO OUT SOMEWHERE ELSE , BRING YOUR WORK/LAPTOP WITH YOU, GO SOMEWHERE FUN

Wow, Maria, you're my dream! Many of your VDo answered my questions in my head! I do feel so isolated once I moved to the new country, Australia! It was a small town but now better with the bigger town like Brisbane. At that time, I feel like to die and no more motivation working at home alone. Not much productivity and too much screens. Things get better when I moved to work at the local library, do more latin classes and social dancing, group exercise, dinner with friends, local markets, etc. As I was using FB, doesn't help my soul as it's not much interaction. This is a critical problem with entrepreneurs these days and I am glad that it's not only me. In Brisbane has more biz networking, i always try to get there. Thanks very much for your suggestion and I will take good actions accordingly hopefully, my productivity increase big time. xox

The more I remove myself from society the more I understand monks. This year so far I've spent around 15h with my family, 30h with my neighbours kid tutoring him in english and maybe 5h of chit-chatting with acquaintances. I am alone, but not lonely. Well sometimes I am. Then I think about making new friends, but this would cost time and I don't want to waste any. So I decide not to pursue any new relationships. (At least for the next few years.) This is why I am focusing on finding inner peace, happiness and fulfilment just from being, like tibetan monks do. All while implementing 'ruthless focus' towards my goals like Steve Jobs did. Cheers :)

I've worked at home for almost 20 years. For a few years in the middle, there were other team members locally, but we have been fully virtual for over 4 years. Before my daughter was born, I took fun classes to get out of the house. I also physically went into places to pay bills, do banking, post office, etc. just to be able to talk to a person face to face (still do banks and post office this way out of habit). After my daughter was born, I took her to reading time at the library, signed her up for classes, joined play groups, etc. We're still heavily involved in social groups as we decided to homeschool (she's in her teens now). Work-wise, we have a weekly team member Skype call and we heavily use Skype one-on-one. I also am a volunteer on a local board. I now look forward to having a day when I can stay home and not have to talk to anyone outside of my family.

Most of my career has been working from home for someone else. In the last 3 years, I have been working from home as my own boss --- this is very different. The challenge I have is the pressure from family and friends to be available for them 24/7. They truly don't understand that I still have to go into my office and work--- lunch and tennis sound great but..... The other challenge is knowing I have all day to get everything done resulting in procrastination and stress. Anyone else?

I wish I could do number 3, work outside the home. But if your work from home job involves personal/confidential information and a hardline internet connection, that won’t be possible.

Very timely indeed. My solutions that may help others? I work remotely and I'm doing an online masters program. This can be very isolating although the program is very engaging with discussion forums daily. I joined a cross fit program that emphasizes community and accountability buddies so I do that post work and pre school work. I am back into doing partner acrobatic yoga 1x/week. And 2x/week I relocate remote work to get out of the home i.e. Libraries, bookstore, cafes (although I don't want to spend much $). I try to make each week slightly different to keep work exciting. Good luck to you all and I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Marie, Thank you so much for everything you put out in the world!! Your videos are so insightful and truly give perspective!! I have to say, that working at a local cage definitely help increase my productivity... also, I do so right next to my gym, so it helps knock that priority out as well!!
I've just started socializing and attending group meet ups, with like minded people. This too, helps reinforce my consistency, and energy from that type of environment!!
    Thanks again!!

I am an Executive Recruiter and am talking to people on the phone all day long. I ADORE working from home in the quiet, no interruptions, no office chit chat etc. I never get lonely but I see that I am not the norm here. I think if I had a job that didn't interact with people all day, it would not be so enjoyable.

While I can relate to both self-employed and employee flex-home positions. I can't believe the lady writing in is complaining that her boss is somehow responsible for her loneliness. Sheesh! Great response, Marie!
Seriously, we are not helpless and we are not in prison. Except the prison we make for ourselves. Great, wonderful, and kind suggestions as always, Marie.
Another thing, people can be grateful to not have to be around the annoying boss and coworkers out there. And grateful for the option not to be stuck around people they don't care about all day. They can totally control who they hang out with. So much more upside than down.

I do not feel my boss was responsible for my happiness. I do feel that as online work becomes more prevalent, bosses should be aware that F2F interactions are essential for some of us and that should be factored in or your workers might be silently cracking up behind the scenes. Not very productive and it is not an effective strategy to ignore interpersonal needs. Oftentimes, only half of an office is virtual, which thickens the plot, and creates a different social strata in the workplace. Also, not so effective to ignore this reality.
For example: A colleague hired a guy (6 figures). He worked all alone one city away and they only communicated by email. This competent professional had a complete mental breakdown which was largely due to the fact that he did not have human F2F interaction for months. They had no idea what was going on and his time with them was a write off. As a boss, you are working with souls, not robots, and to ignore that could be costly. Being "super tough" about this is a blind spot.

      @prattcreekart 8 лет назад +1

Thanks for chiming in. So nice to hear from you. And hear more of your thoughts. Your thoughts make sense. And for the boss who hired someone and just left him in limbo, that's pretty sad for both parties. Hope they are both in a better position now.

The employer wrote it off as the employee having a difficult divorce and did not hire a virtual employee again. The employee did have a difficult divorce, an empty house to come back to, and no face-to-face people interactions for months. His reputation suffered a little bit, but in the business community a difficult divorce is supported and understood because most of the men at the top can relate to this... so he was ok. :)

Working from home is NOT what it seems! I've been working from home as a software UI/UX designer and marketing guy for a technology company for many years now. (I am 23 years old) and Its already taking a toll on my mental health! I think some immediate changes I am going to make are daily lunch time group fitness classes (I already am very active in fitness already but usually solo) and I am now considering selling my big workstation (desktop computer) to trade in for a larger 15 inch laptop that will allow me to work outside of my bedroom during the week. Any other tips would be great, but my one tip to everyone working from home is to make sure your ergonomics are setup correctly, do some research on proper desk setup, and for every hour you work you should try to get away from the screen for at least 15 minutes. Also, I need to delete instagram!! Thanks for the great video Marie, regards from Toronto, Ontario. Subscribed. --- And Remember- expecting things to change without changing anything is by definition, insanity!

Great video, but you didn't mention face time with family, church, library book club etc., hobby classes like pottery and sometimes just being around people when you're alone like to the park, movies or to eat, can be helpful even if you don't interact. (I know you touched on that last one)

I'm newly (1 year) retired newly single (my boyfriend of 22 years passed away 2 years ago), living in a new town, and finding it hard to make new friends. I don't sit home. I've been to several meetups but in a large city they are usually far away and the other people there don't live anywhere close to me. How does one make new friends at 66? It seem like everyone has their quota and aren't looking for more.

How about volunteering, teaching a class if you have skills i.e. Cooking, gardening, sewing, etc
going to meetups, church or other places of worship, inviting family and friends over, taking weekend trips for singles or trips that have a learning angle, join gym, join book club, start a book club
      Good luck

    • @Creashone
      @Creashone 8 лет назад

Try going to the local community centre and seeing which groups meet regularly. There are usually quilters, artists, or crafters that meet regularly and most of them are retired women about your age. If you like crafts, that might an absolutely ideal place. If you like church... that is another place where they are always looking for volunteers. Doing things where your hands are busy can be a great way. If you don't meet any kindred spirits, at least you volunteered or created something of beauty for yourself. It takes the pressure off too. :)
