    @GarageGear I do a mix of your steps and am also in WNY. My method has been - Ethanol Free Fuel only, I add stabil marine to my fuel and use it the whole season. At the end of the season I empty out most of the fuel from the tank via siphon and run the engine until it shuts off due to lack of fuel. So basically I'm doing both the stabil + run out of gas method. I do this with all my small engine equipment, never had any issues with starting the next year.
    Also, since you're talking springtime maintenance (in the video title) I do these items at the same time as the end of season carb prep. I change the oil, pull shear pins & grease the augers, pull the wheels off and re-lube the axels, pull the belly pan and inspect wear items like the rubber drive disc and replace if needed, lightly grease the gears & chains, lightly grease the shaft the speed selector rides on, grease the chute control sprockets/gears, and check the belts. I also fluid film the machine and double hit any rust spots to limit/stop their growth. Spark plug gets changed every 4-5 years. It takes me about 90 minutes to do everything. Parts don't cost much more than $15-20. Cheap maintenance overall. Also, it's great if you have kids to have them help - more people should learn to do basic mechanical maintenance.
    Great channel btw.

    Garage Gear, you have some of the best video on for us DIYers, including this one. Here is one thing I didn't hear mentioned though, what grade of gasoline. I quit using regular unleaded gas in my small engines 30 years ago (mowers, snow blowers, motorcycles, etc.). Since then I only use premium unleaded ethanol free gas (92 octane). I firmly believe in a completley empty tank & carb, or completely full, NO regular unleaded and ethanol free. My winter and summer storage practice: FULL tank, Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer, petcock on/open. We live in north Idaho and this has been my families practice for over 30 years. In fact, every time I fill a gas can I put Sta-Bil in it. I then put it in all my machine gas tanks at time of season end storage. I've never needed to clean a carb on any of my equipment and we currently have 2 Ariens snowblowers that are over 30 years old and one that is over 20 years old. Thanks again for the great videos!

    Great points. I agree with you based on personal experience that running a small engine until it is out of fuel and then draining the carburetor bowl works very well. And, as you said, it is an easy, no cost option.
    I take another approach, which is NOT a no cost option, but it is easy, and it works perfectly. The last few times I use a yard machine at the end of a season, I use TruFuel instead of the usual no-ethanol gasoline (I have no experience with other engineered fuels, which I am sure will work fine). By filling the tank with TruFuel before I use my machines for the last few times in the season, I am sure that only engineered fuel remains in the carburetor. Then I top off the fuel tank with the same engineered fuel. When the next season begins, everything starts perfectly and I don't have to clean or rebuild the carburetors AND there is no gunk in the fuel tank or fuel filter.
    I have done this for the past three years without any problems. Rather than cleaning carburetors, I now have more time to do the other important maintenance your videos feature on my Honda mower and Troy-Bilt snow blower -- each well over a decade old. My small engines run perfectly, and I am saving a good chunk of money, too.
    Maintenance is cheap; machines are not.
    Many thanks! 👍👍

    i use stabil in my gas for my power equipment (snowblower, lawnmower, and pressure washer) and i just started my snowblower which has a mix of regular e10 gas from last year and two years ago when (i know, not the greatest idea. but my area didnt get enough snow to even burn one tank last year) and my snowblower (toro powermax hd 828) started right up on the first pull. that being said, i use 2-3x as much stabil as their recommended dosage in equipment that will spend most of its time in storage. i prefer the full tank storage method because a full tank leaves less air space for the inside to rust, but im interested in hearing your feedback on that. have you seen rust accumulate inside a gas tank storing them empty? this year i was able to find ethanol free gas at a station not too far from home (north central ohio). im with you on the carb bowl seal thing. they are cheap and quick to replace so to me it's a non-issue. new subscriber. love the videos. cheers

      Hey invincible, thanks for sharing what you do with your equipment. I personally have never seen any gas tank rusted out in my garage. Even on my 1971 ariens. That thing had a 50 year old tecumseh engine on it that was in great shape with no rust inside. Stored empty every year. I would rather not chance gumming up a carburetor or other components with bad gas. A gas tank can be easily replaced and most bolt right on if it were to have some problem with it. Carbs can be a pain to get to on some models. Especially MTD snowblowers. Thanks for watching

After a recent startup the wheels wouldn't engage so I tiped it up and checked the pressure plate and drive wheel, al lin good working order so I thought it might be the drive belt, removed the belt cover and hte belts were all intact so after scratching my head for a while I found the idler tensioner was flopping around, the spring that holds it against the drive belt had worn through from friction with the pulley so a $5 part from O'Rileys Auto Parts and an easy procedure compared to replacing the belts and I was backin business. Whenever we do carb cleaning services at Eliminator Performance we drain all the customers fuel even if they say it is fresh. On many occasions we have found debris or water in the fuel and since we ethanol test it 95% of the time it has 10% ethanol which generates 90% of our work. My personal truck is used to dispose of 75% of this customer fuel once i add an Octane Booster and K100S+ stabilizer plus octane booster to it. The other 25% goes to a hazardous waste site since it is too old which normally comes out of all the generators we service. Stabilizers do not prevent ethanol or fuel breakdown over a period of time!

    Hi JB,
    Have been subscribed for your channel for a while - thank you for those REALLY great videos. Got 90% of my questions answered before even asked))))))
    Have one question left though.
    Switched to Ariens snowblower this year from an electric one. Got a nice deal for a used 24" Compact, 7 YO. Looks nice, the only issue is - despite it starts very nicely with electric start, you need to pull like 10-15 time on the rope to get it running. Spark plug looks pretty dirty - will replace it while doing the oil change, but not sure if that can be the reason for bad starting. Previous owner told me that he cleaned the carb before winter. I was told that I might need to adjust the valves, but I can't find the specs for valve clearances. That's a 208CC engine. Are there any general rules or maybe you have some recommendations?
    Thank you very much in advance man!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  9 месяцев назад

      Hey Alex! I would replace the spark plug and clean the carb! 9/10 tough starts are caused by a dirty carb. I would leave the valves alone. Those are most likely fine! Glad you’re finding the video helpful! Thanks for being a cool fan! 👍

In spring, drain carb/gas from that valve on bottom and pour in that expensive 94 octane gas from the big box stores fuel bottles just enough for machine to run on cleanest possible gas for few min and then shut off the gas valve letting it die on it's own. Right after, drain whatever is left from bottom of that carb (Ariens 24 deluxe snowblower). Hoping that the fuel drain plug actually drains out all fuel and not just little that's in the carb?

    When I tip my Ariens Deluxe 30 up into the Maintenance Position. All the gas leaks out of the carburetor. Basically gas drips out of the carb for 2 or so minutes and then it's done dripping. No gas was in the gas tank although not sure that part matters. I'm just curious is this normal? Or do I possibly need to replace that bowl seal thing on the carb you talked about near the end of this video? Bought it bran new back in 2014 so it's about 9 years old now.

One once per 2.5 gallons is the normat amount of additive needed and I have never had a problem with starting any of my gas engines. At Eliminator Performance we encourage our customers to use Alkylate fuel after running their engines out of fuel at year end then run the engine for 2-4 minutes to get this 2 year stable fuel into the carburettor. We have a 2 stroke snowblower we have not used in 2.5 years that was half full of 50:1 mix Alkylate fuel and it fired right up on 2 primes and choke with one pull on the recoil and ran smooth as though it was new. Aspen may be the best known brand we also have used Kinetix and Gulf Pro Fuel with excellent success. Once opened the canned fuel is good for 2 years sitting closed good for 5 years. Great video JB! I never drained my fuel tanks just the carb, good idea, I think I will start doing that, thanks. I always add sta-bil to the gas can when I fill it up with non-oxy premium, so whatever the gas goes in is protected, that and sta-bil is dirt cheap so you might as well just add it. BTW idea for you, I think a lot of the gas problems people have is dirt in the gas you buy. Have you considered adding an inline filter like some engines come with already? 🤔 I buy Briggs & Stratton 4105 5-Pack Of 298090S Fuel Filter 150 Micron For Engines without Fuel Pump on Amazon. Make sure you only use 150 Micron filters though, on a gravity fuel feed engine, anything finer and it will not flow. I drove fuel tanker for years, they use to recommend never buying gas or diesel while the tanker is filling up the tanks at a station because all the dirt and water in the tank gets stirred up, so yes the tanks at the station have dirt and water in them. Same with the tanker that delivers the fuel. Diesel is really dirty and the tanker might have diesel in that pocket one trip and gas the next. Also the non-oxy gas sells much less, because it cost a lot more, so is a chance the gas in the non-oxy tank at the station could be old gas already when you buy it. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JB! 👍

    Is alkylate gasoline wide use in us? Here north europe many use alkylate gas and leave it as it is in the tank at springtime and simply use it next season. I don't like to drain carburettor if they have plastic float in them. Fuel level setting changes when plastic hangs in the air. My old ariens have brass float so it won't care.

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  9 месяцев назад

      Hey hess! We don’t use that fuel here in the us! But I did read that it’s good for lawn equipment. Perhaps the equivalent ethanol-free which we use here is another name for it.
