Hi thanks for the reply. I've noticed different kinds of fluid film and they seem to be paint like.... which type is the lubricating one ? Grease type aerosol type .
@@roldd64 hey rold! The standard fluid film I have linked above is the one you need. There is another one in black. Same product same protection.
@@GarageGear Thx again
Have you ever had a blower wrap up an extension cord ( hidden under the snow-left out the last time my wife used the weed walker) around the auger and not break the shear pin. 🤦♂️. Well now you have. Brand new ariens 24” deluxe grabbed a cord and wrapped it around the auger and managed to wedge it between the shaft/auger and the housing pushing the sidewall out. What a mess. Had to cut the cord out and use a rubber hammer to pound it back in. I’m hoping 🙏 there’s no damage to the auger or gear box. Worried about the end of the shaft wear it meets the side.
@@Brian-41-14.racing wow did it bend it that bad? Keep me posted!
Fluid Film is God's gift to lubrication and metal protection. Nice and thorough demonstration as usual JB.
Appreciate you small block! Merry Christmas my friend!
Fluid Film will wash off when hit with water under pressure. Great stuff, just SKIP the under body flush at your local car wash.
"Get it all in there!" That's what she said.....JB. Great vid.
Just wait until you see this weeks video lol!
Hmmm....can't wait. Gotta make sure I've subcribed.@@GarageGear
Short of me draining the gas and changing the oil at the end of snow season, I did nothing to maintain my 17 year old Toro snowblower. It bit the dust this past year when everything started rusting and seizing up. Had I known anything about snowblower maintenance like I do now after watching fine video content by you, that Toro would have lasted 30 years. Thanks JB.
Hey homie! Knowledge is power and now you have it! Your next machine will last a very long time! Appreciate your positive feedback!
Important maintenance to prevent gearbox from break, MARRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
Appreciate you Kjell! Merry Christmas my friend! 👍🎄
I also lube the wheel axle and spray the metal part of the wheels with silicone spray to prevent rusting. Happy snow blowing!!
Thanks for sharing diy!
I make sure to take my wheels off every year and lube the axles up too. I've had snow blowers come in that needed transmission work and it was more blankety blank work to get the rusted-on wheels off than repair the gear boxes. Tip the whole thing up on the bucket and the wheels are easier to play with. l prefer PB Blaster to help break the rust first, if they are really trusted tight. Tap the hubs with a hammer to help break the rust and let the PB Blaster work it's way along. Takes a while, but most will free up. Good luck.
Thanks JB!!! My Troy Bilt snow blower doesn’t have Zerks and I didn’t know how to grease the augers. Perfect video!
Awesome Michael! Thanks for watching!
My immediate thought was that if you are going to do the long and difficult procedure, drill, tap and install zerks.
Hey Frank! You could do that but you’ll still have spacers in between the augers that could seize as well. These are cheap bad designs IMO! Thanks for watching
@@GarageGear Thats a good point but putting the zerks in means the grease is definitely in the auger shaft. Spraying/greasing the spacers would also be a good idea.
Thank for the tip

If you're using fluid film for the first time be warned the stuff smells kinda bad. Another handy tip is to place the can in a bucket or large cup with warm water. Warming the can will help it spray more fluid. When this stuff gets cold it gets thick. Two other companies make a very comparable products. Woolwax and pb blastr surface shield.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing!
I like the smell of Fluid Film.
@@flyjarrett very unique smell to it! 👍

All good Dennis! Thanks for looking out for us! 👍
Thanks, excellent video. I will take the easy way for certain.
Can’t go wrong with the easy way! Thanks for watching strat!
If you don't have zerks you can just take the auger apart from the gear case and drill, tap and install some. I did this on a used Honda HS 1132 I bought recently. The augers were rusted to the driveshaft. It took a combination of penitrating oil, Wrenching & heat to get it apart. Once I cleaned it all up I installed the zerks. Now if it sheers a sheer pin, the shaft will continue to turn smoothly without damaging the gear case.
Way to go CK! Good stuff! 👍
Another good video JB. Going to have to look into some of that Fluid Film. When you showed the can, I wasn't thinking that it would be sticky or thick, but more like wd40. Cold and windy here with the sun out. Looks like you guys got a little hammered with it all. Take care and have a good weekend.🎄
You’ll like fluid film Ed! Plenty of uses! And plenty of snow here! Merry Christmas bud! 👍❄️🎄

JB another good video I've done this to my snowblower for 26 years and the important of maintenance can't be stressed enough. I been buying used snowblowers lately and 90% of the issues with them is poor maintenance and or laziness I like to call it. I'm glad you share with us your experience and knowledge makes a difference to us who follow you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family my friend, cold and windy here I'm sure it's bad in your area too.

JB! Just found you a couple weeks ago when I had to do some maintenance on my blower. Mine did not have zerks despite only having seen your video with the zerks. I went to Autozone and bought a grease gun and red grease. While there, I asked one of the associates about my problem and he directed me to a CV joint boot grease needle. Worked amazingly well! Red grease where you just sprayed fluid film with much less mess.

JB, thanks for this video! I am needing to do this on my machine and this will help a ton! Thanks again!!
ROCK ON Jeff! Thanks for watching!
That old sno thro I got only has holes where the grease zerks should be. I got the smallest ones I could find at the hardware store (1/8th inch) and they still seem too big to start into the holes. But, even though I live out in the middle of nowhere I discovered there's an Ariens dealer about 3 miles down the road from me, LOL! Look up Harristown Garage, Salem, Indiana some time and you'll see, it's out in the sticks too!
Thanks for sharing revel! Glad you found a shop nearby
Thanks for the tip using the Fluid film. I need something heavier to get into "Those Spots" that the liquids run out of. Blessing to you and your family.
Appreciate you Ted! Thanks for watching another my friend!
Great advice JB. I like to lube up all moving parts on my snow blower too with either grease or a spray lubricant. I also like to lube up any bolts as well to help keep salt corrosion down. Merry Christmas buddy!
You’re a smart man my friend! Merry Christmas bud! Stay warm!
Thanks for that FYI tips on the argue lubing, what is the best gas for new snow blowers!! And also for older snow blowers, Thsnks😮
Ethanol free is the way to go’ 👍
Just started watching your vids a couple of weeks ago, and have added an impeller kit to my old Poulan Pro per your guidance. Also added roller skids. I'd watched your previous auger lube video, and was eager to do that, but was disappointed to find that mine didn't have zerk fittings. And now -- you show up with this one that covers my situation, exactly! Nice timing!
Ironically, I've got the blower ready to go, amid much media hype for a "bomb cyclone" and what happens? Not much. Lots of wind, a 40 degree drop in temperatures, but not much snow. So instead of trying out my modifications, I didn't even have enough snow on the sidewalk or driveway to give it a shot. Guess I should be thankful...
Anyway, hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season. And thanks for your informative videos!
ROCK ON CHUCK! You’ll get your chance! Have no fear! Thanks for being a cool fan! Merry Christmas!
Nice video! I disassembled the augers and put anti-seize on the shaft and put them back, did the same on the wheels
Awesome! Glad it worked for you! You will be happy you did it. Thanks for checking out the channel!
I think it must be an upstate NY thing, because I never heard of Fluid Film until I started watching the South Main Auto channel and subscribed to Garage Gear, J.B. I grew up in Michigan , so it seems like I should have known about this incredible product.
You can bet that I know right where my can is and when I do my annual maintenance on my Craftsman 24" after this season this will be my lube of choice for the augers. (No zerks on mine, either).

My man JB, thanks for this video entertaining and educating me during the Blizzard. This video was perfect because the one that shows the hard way, needs the grease gun (which I don't have yet opps, Santa?) Anyway Fluid Film is my new friend thanks to you! ROCK ON VINCENT! Can’t go wrong with fluid film! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
The easy way sounds like the way to go. But..... if one were to do it the hard way, since it's apart it would be a good idea to drill and tap the augers for zerk Fittings.
Merry Christmas JB to you and your family.
Good idea chris! Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas!
😎👍👍👍😊 Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄🎄🎄
Merry Christmas to you too Leo! Thanks for watching
Well here I am again, watching another one of your great videos. My question this time is how in the world do you get grease in the gear box without dismantling it. I’m a retired equipment operator/mechanic and am a BIG believer in pm. I’ve thought about installing a zert fitting in the housing somewhere but if you have some ideas that would be great! An excellent mechanic in your neck of the woods (New York) Eric O swears by Fluid Film, and since I just purchased my first can last weekI’m pretty much sold as well. Hope you and your family have a joyous Christmas and happy New Year!
Hey David what kind of blower to you have? Is there a drain and fill plug on you gear box? Or is it completely sealed?
It looks to be cast. There is a plastic plug on the top. Never have take it out. It is a craftsman 24”” with the 212 cc overhead valve engine. Got it maybe a year before Sears went down the tube.
I think I might just drill some holes and add grease zerks to mine, since I do snow removal for a living I like being able to grease and go lol
That sounds like a good plan. It can be done.
Yup. That’s how you do it!
There’s no reason at all to disassemble the augers to lube them like you said, JB.
I also like to take the Fluid Film and shoot it into the handlebar tubing until it runs out the bottom. 😊
Dude! Brilliant idea! I’m stealing that one! You Da MAN Paul! Merry Christmas my friend!
Great video ..... those of us in the rust belt need to keep our machines lubed up. Here in Rochester, the DOT uses so much salt it is ridiculous and keeping it out of moving parts is near impossible, I didnt know to do this until I shattered a gear box 25 years ago and it cost me $200 back then just for the part.
Wow! Imagine what it costs now??? 😦 thanks for sharing John!
@@GarageGear I don't want to find out. LOL Merry Christmas
@@johnnash9072 merry Christmas my friend!
JB. My snowblower has sheer pins for the impeller as well. Should I do the same lube for that shaft as well? Great video. Keep ‘em coming. Greetings from northern Illinois.
Hey Mark! Yes that is a great plan! Thanks for being a cold fan!
Never thought of this. Will be doing this maintenance shortly. Thanks. Always great content. Will it harm snowblower if cord for electric start is plugged in indefinitely??
I don’t think it will harm anything! Thanks for watching 👍
I used Tacky Grease with a needle to get the shaft.
Good tip thanks for sharing
Well JB great video, but one problem, my Toro doesn’t have shear pins ???
Hey William! Just do the same thing without the shear pin steps! It should help you out. Thanks for watching and merry Christmas my friend!
Nice, some stuff I knew... but thank you for the stuff I didn't know. My gearbox is the same as in this video. What do you recommend to put in their, if anything??
Hey mark! Does it have a drain port?
@GarageGear it's cast aluminum with a rubber plug on the top. I'm able to remove with a small flathead screwdriver.
Are there shear pins in the impeller of these powersmarts? When not in use my impeller spins freely and moves back and forth. My augers spin just fine. Obviously it doesn’t blow snow. Belt seems fine also.
I believe there may be two on the impeller shaft. I sold this unit so unfortunately I cannot check. But if you see two empty holes then yes you’ll need to get some shear pins. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. So you probably wouldn’t know if the auger and impeller shear pins are the same size?
Is there a way to protect the auger housing from rust? I live on a main road that gets salted like crazy every year. The auger housing on my last (admittedly not very nice) snowblower rusted out really badly and I'm hoping to avoid that with my new husqvarna. Thanks!
Hey Louis a good spray with fluid film or even wd40 between uses will help protect against rust. I also created a follow along course linked in several of my new videos that shows you exactly how and where to coat them! 👍
Hey I love the videos! Quick question for ya. If for my snow blower I can’t stick the spray nozzle from the fluid film that far into the shear pin holes to get all the way through the auger shaft, is there another way besides taking the whole thing apart? I did the best I could and sprayed on the sides/inside the shear pin hole, but one of my augers seems to rotate a bit slower than the other.
Hey him! Not to worry fluid film does a good job getting in a creeping it’s way around. Especially if you can give the augers a little spin. If you really need a protectant that can creep in try Krown! Little pricey but gets into every crevice. Creeps for days. As far as the one spinning slower, have you checked the bushing around it? Thanks for being a cool fan!
Hey JB I really appreciate the quick response! I’ll definitely order some Krown, I’ve never heard of it. My blower is DR PRO 28 by Generac (should have gone Ariens). The left/right augers are one piece only. When the shear pins are removed the right spins more slowly than the left. I did take a closer look and noticed that the washer on the left auger is looser and I can move the auger slightly left/right on the shaft, whereas the right auger is tighter and I can’t move it left/right on the shaft any, the washer is pretty tight next to the auger. I’m
It sure which is normal but I think in this video you can move both augers slightly left/right. I’ll have to tinker with it a bit and see why my auger on the right has no play of movement left/right slightly when the shear pins are out. Thanks for the help!
@@him5679 you got it! Tinker with it and let me know how it goes! 👍
The looser auger side had a bearing that was stuck on the shaft. I finally got that off with a screw driver and rubber mallet. After that I could spray all the way between the auger and shaft with fluid film! I greased the bearing and popped it back on and tightened it, now both augers are tight. Seems to be that’s how it should be! Waiting for snow now!
@@him5679 thanks for sharing this my friend! Glad you were able to get in there and see what was up.
I prefer Honey Goo, the stuff is great and readily available at your local Canadian Tire and it's a Canadian Product. Support your local businesses as much as possible

I just did my yearly maintenance on my Craftsmsn. I do not have Zirk fittings, I did however, see a plastic, blue, flat head screw on top of the gearbox and I’ve noticed it on some machines and other RUclips videos. What is its purpose?
Hey 6 that’s for filling the gearcase with grease or oil depending on what’s inside! I’ll probably be doing a video on that soon!
It’s much more difficult to do this on an older one like my 1989 Snapper. Pretty much every new snowblower has the auger in four piece assemblies, but a lot of these older ones have augers that use 2 piece assemblies that don’t move around very easily. So there is only so much you can lubricate on these sections.
Thanks for sharing BCSERK! Can always count on you for some good info! Merry Christmas!
What kind of grease should I use in my gear box on my snow blower?
00 grease is good! I’ll probably be doing a video on this soon! 👍

Can you add an impeller kit to plastic impellers? (Craftsman 22" 5hp 2 stage)
I sure you could! Are you sure they are plastic?
Hi
I have an ariens 927LE from 2008. I have a feeling my augers are seized to the shaft and I cant get the old pins out. Any suggestions?
Hey jayan! You could try torching them and then immediately after dump ice cold water on them. This has broken a number of seized items for me. Thanks for watching
Haven't seen this yet so, maybe you can do a video on it. Or if you have i have not found it. If your gearbox has no fitting to add more grease to it how fo you add to it. I have 2 cub cadets. No way yo add to the box. Let me and your followers, that don't have the fitting to address that . Thanks

Maybe tilt the machine when you spray it. Let gravity work it in. Merry Christmas!
Not a bad idea shedder! Thanks for sharing and merry Christmas!
How would you do this to a Honda HS 1132 TA?
Hey Daniel! I would have to see it up close but using the same tactics should work. Slip the spray tube underneath each auger as best you can and let it rip! Thanks for watching!
Hi JB I live in Montreal Quebec Canada what's a good lubricant for me to use what would the name be to buy at an auto parts
Thanks and happy holidays
Not sure about Canada my friend but another I found is stabil rust stopper! Merry Christmas!
Ever use silicone spray for that?
Yeah you could. Not as thick though!
what do you undercoat your truck with now?
I take it to a place that sprays Krown on the underside! $50 best deal in town! Thanks for watching!
I agree that "Fluid Film" IS great stuff, but on my Honda HS55 the augers are piece (one shear pin per side), so the creeping effect of the lubricant may not be very effective. Instead, I remove the augers (easy to do..side panels bolt on) and apply LIBERAL AMOUNTS of silver anti-seize compound, which will literally last forever. Btw, regarding the use of Fluid Film on your vehicle under carriage, GREAT as long as you SKIP the "under body flush" at your local car wash..........Fluid Film washes off fairly easily when hit with pressurized water, FYI! I meant to say the augers are ONE piece. Sorry about the typo!
Thanks for sharing oz!👍
My snowblower does not have shear pins, then what maintenance can be done?
Same steps without the shear pins! Thanks for watching!
Stupid question but can’t we tap/add zerk fittings into these kinda models or no?
Can’t hurt to try! Might be worth doing but the other small spacers will need oil/grease underneath. Thanks for watching mike
@@GarageGear you’re welcome! And yeah that’s true I figured if we can get some grease in it and spray the rest it would hekp

Perhaps but I have seen some expenive augers $50-$100 per. Ridiculous! Thanks for watching bud
just add some grease fittings.
You could do that if you wanted to. Thanks for watching
WD-40 usually works, just make sure to apply it a few times each season (once is not enough and will not last). I prefer to use garage door spray lube... the stuff you apply to the rollers and the rails. Seems a bit thicker than WD-40, but still thin enough to get inside the shaft.

I'll send pic of auger there is no grease gun fitting on Auger might need to use sprat lubricant
@@shaun5206 cool! Can’t go wrong spraying them!
@@GarageGear I opened the gear box for the auger and I found a solid white kinda grease so who ever had it before me didn't use the OO on it would it be a problem if I went and added OO grease along with whatever already in it ?
I’m lucky and mine has zerks
Fewer and fewer nowadays have them! Companies gotta cut costs somehow right? Thanks for sharing glitch!
@@GarageGear I feel like older snowblowers are better now days it’s all plastic and how to save money
@@GlitchEmpireBrett they cut a lot of corners nowadays!
If you do go the "hard way," you can just drill and add zerk fittings.
I was wondering about this. If you DID have to dismantle the shaft/auger assembly, it should be an easy thing to drill, tap and add some fittings, right?
You can always add them if you want! Drill and tap!
It’s not a terrible project to do.
What is a zerk?
It’s a grease fitting that you attach a grease gun to 👍
Nice idea but I’m confused on why you’d pull the spark plug wire for an unwanted start up? You weren’t turning the engine over nor had it ready to start. Guess it doesn’t really matter having it unplugged or not but it makes me question your knowledge of what it takes for an engine to run…..takes a few steps to start the engine…if you don’t do those steps it won’t run.
Otherwise nice video!
Hey mark!’any time you are spinning parts on a snowblower it’s a good idea to pull the plug! Just taking proper safety precautions! Thanks for watching
@@GarageGear absolutely pull the plug!!! That will remove any compression from the engine that may transfer to the impeller and augers! Great tip!
@@donmayberryjrsOPE gotta play it safe.
Nice. Do you have to worry about the inside of the gearbox?
How old is your machine!
@@GarageGearcub cadet around 4 years
@@gangrenebob7281 ok cool here is a video that may help you out. HOW TO LUBRICATE A SNOWBLOWER AUGER GEARBOX FOR BEGINNERS
