In most cases, on most snowblowers you will have to TAKE THE WHEELS OFF at some point to do some MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. And if the wheels are SEIZED onto the drive shaft you are about to have a bad day. In this video, I go over how to properly REMOVE THE WHEELS from your snowblower, LUBRICATE the axles and put everything back the way you found it. I even throw in some BONUS TIPS along the way. Thanks, J.B. I just bought a Brand New Ariens 28 Deluxe on Monday, November 27th. from a Dealer here in the Detroit Metro Area. I had been watching other videos about lubricating the drive axel, but your video is the best. Thanks for the explanation about the autoturn; now I understand why the right side is different from the left. Thanks, for demonstrating how to tip the snowblower into the Service Position; yours is the only video demonstrating that. Also, thanks for showing how to remove the back cover (in only two seconds); again, yours is the only video demonstrating that.
You got it Andre! Thanks for being a cool fan!
Removing the over shaft on the right side axle is often overlooked. Good job JB 👍
Hey Smallblock! If someone doesn’t look carefully they might not even notice it. Lol kinda hidden well. Have a good weekend bud!
Thanks for the insight. 😮 Yup, I have an Ariens and never knew this. Not in Owners Manual.
I just did this on my Platinum 30”!! Had no idea about this feature!! Thank you RUclips!! And JB 😉 shined it up with some SC1.. stood in the garage staring at it like a proud dad at his kids 1st baseball game after a hit
Hi JB! Good to see you! Oh man I made the whiteboard! I'm feelin' so special! Thank you, JB! This video was so helpful! I can't say I have ever lubricated my drive axles on my Ariens. This will be happening very soon and will be using Anti-Seize. Thanks for the Amazon Link! You're the best. As always, love your videos and comedic tone. "You better start prayin'" 🥰🥰😊😊
Thanks for being a super cool fan as always! I appreciate your positive feedback. You can’t go wrong with this procedure. You’ll be happy you did it! More comedic relief to come lol
Oh I am so glad that you posted this video dear friend and reminded me of this task...off to pick up my anti seize shortly. Best way to take advantage of a warmish Saturday today. I appreciated your Ariens side eyed lecture. Makes me say hmmmm as well.
Always with thanks...and much gratitude. Love being schooled on how to! Your uploads are like Christmas morning for me JB. Now it's time to get busy.
Hey Joe! They should definitely do something about that. It would cost them pennies to do. How have you been doing lately?
@@GarageGear - done and done...axles lubricated - augers greased...all thanks to you dear friend...my Arien's dealer will be very disappointed for the lack of business from me this winter - and I couldn't be happier!
@@joebarzo9935 awesome my friend! You won’t have to hustle your snowblower around all winter for any issues whatsoever! Have a great weekend Joe!
I don't have a snow blower but great advice! I LIVE in the rust belt & do exactly what u use on my car parts that I nèed to. 👍
Anti seize has a million uses! Lol! Thanks for being a cool fan Rice!
You should also coat the splines of the RH shaft with anti-seize or grease as well.
Thanks for sharing
Years ago when I worked for the gas company A old timer used to use anti-seize all the time and got it everywhere all over it was everywhere on this pipe in his hair it was so funny so I relate that stuff is really really good. Does a great job.
Works great and super messy lol! Can’t go wrong with it!
And because of you, I am now going out in My freezing garage to lubricate My axles on the same model of machine... 🙃 Great video!
Awesome! Have fun and stay warm out there!
This video is perfectly timed. I planned on doing this procedure today. Thanks
Perfect timing, my friend. Thanks for watching!
That is some good stuff! We use a lot of it on fertilizer equipment and it works wonders!
Yep! This stuff works great’
Always properly align the tube before putting over your shaft. A misaligned tube being shoved onto your shaft can cause you all kinds of problems.
Wait, are we still talking about snow blowers?
🤣
PS...Thanks for the shoutout, JB!
😂 you are too funny, Mace! Those teeth on the end of pipe are a real problem. You gotta watch your shaft on those! Hope the weekend is treating you well!
Hi JB I just bought a brand new snowblower for the first time and I had to lube everything they should come with everything lubricated
You would think but unfortunately they don’t!
That's waaaay too much... PERFECT! 👍
Lay it on thick!!! Can’t go wrong! 👍
Great video, Apply the grease "in the spirit in which it was invented". I did the same when I took delivery of my new lawn tractor...
To got it my friend! Thanks for watching!!
Another great video JB! 😎
If someone has a lot of fuel left in the tank prior to rotating the machine into the service position, an additional tip would be to turn the fuel valve off, run the machine until the carb is dry, then put a plastic bag underneath the fuel cap to prevent it from leaking out.
JB I noticed that your blower does not have the engine size decal on the gas tank, when I bought mine it was missing as well. I contacted Areins and they sent me the decal kit no charge. Great video, very helpful.
Hey John! Had one but it was peeling off a little bit! Pulled it off! All blacked out now! Thanks for watching bud!
Great vids. I have been bad to my snow blower for the last 10 years. 2001 murry. Still runs. Gonna start keeping up with it, to help it last for many more years to come.
Good plan Donnie! Thanks for watching!
Video is perfect timing! I just went out to grease my axles. Thanks JB!
You’ll be glad you did. Thanks for following along!
Thx JB, I take care of my Ariens every spring after the winter is over and done with and of course I use the owners manual as a guide of what to do, I was not aware of the autoturn shaft, and no surprise it’s not in the owners manual from what I recall. I haven’t put my snowblower into service yet this year, so I will have to take care of that shaft before I start using it. Again thanks a bunch!!
You got it, my friend! It is one of those hidden things that no one talks about! Thanks for following along.
Great job. Thanks for all the good info!
thanks JB great video
Thanks for checking it out, my friend!
Thank you for the timely video! I just did this procedure to my brand new 24" Deluxe. The amount of grease on the axels was very minimal from the factory.
Bet it would cost ariens a fraction of a penny to put a little more on. Thanks for watching ryan!
Great tip JB. Checking mine tomorrow for sure. 👍🙏👍🙏
You got it Ray! Have a good rest of the weekend! 👍👍
Thanks. I was wondering why there was a e clip on one side and not the other. i will be taking that wheel of again to do that.
Rock On Garry! 👍
Got any videos of the basics of products I should buy to service an ariens.
I know you give many options, but I am not a mechanic and if I can get by with maybe 2/3 products vs 8/9, that would be great.
Love the videos
Hey Greg what procedures will you be planning to do?
i drilled them for grease fittings , still take it apart before the season to clean everything
Thanks for sharing my friend! 👍
It's just terminology but.... The "key way" is the part that is ground into the shaft that accepts the key or key stock. Nice video as usual, thanks for all you do 😉
Hey rack! Thanks for sharing and watching!
I plan to do the transaxle on my new lawn mower in the Spring.
This will work for that too! Thanks for following along, Joey!
This video could not have come at a more convenient time JB! I was just talking to my son about applying anti seize on the wheel shaft. Never been done yet. It’s an Aries too. About 6 years old. Not many shops do that during routine maintenance. Excellent video and tips for seized wheels. We’ll see how it goes. Have a great weekend my friend!
Hey Jay! Perfect timing indeed! At six years old should be too bad getting them wheels off. What’s up for the rest of the weekend?

At least it won’t get stuck in your pocket lol! 🤷♂️ thanks for watching Don!

@@GarageGear Mike, I’m in Western Canada. That Ariens is the off spring of my 832 John Deere snow blower they look so similar. Its a late 70s upgraded to a 11hp Honda engine. Great videos you post, for me its all common sense but I enjoy them all the same, its great you teach others smart and practical ideas.
@@donziperk hey Mike that’s awesome! we live in a throwaway world nowadays. The way I see it, todays generation needs to learn this stuff! 👍👍
Hey JB, another great video! ❤ I really have no problem doing these sort of things, but when I've never done them - both I don't know really how but also where to do it. I still really love your videos, you make me more confident in doing this and feel that I can get machines to work just as long and well as the pro! ( pro = JB ) Thanks for another video! ❤
Thanks for checking the videos and for being a cool fan as always! Appreciate the positive feedback! Glad I was able to help you become more confident in the garage. Hope you’re having a great weekend.
Really good vid JB!
I wish you a 3’ blizzard soon 😀
Had our first last Sunday, wet heavy stuff. I see absolutely no need for an impeller mod on these SHO’s. Just incredible!
Go Bills!!!
Time for them to eat some K”f”C mashed n gravy!!!!!
I’m sure we will get something along the way here. I bet you’re having fun too! We have a nice weekend so getting in the garage and working on some stuff is needed. Have a great weekend!
Hey JB, I recently made a really cool upgrade to my Honda HRN217 mower. A few days ago a got a free junk condition Honda HRX217. The HRN has the GCV 170 engine while the HRX has the GCV 200 engine. So anyway I got the idea to swap the GCV 200 engine onto my HRN217 to get more power out of it. The swap was successful and now I’ve got a one of a kind mower.
Wow pretty cool! That thing will cut like an animal now! Thanks for sharing BCSERK!
I really take to heart all of you wisdom for myself thank you very much. I am going to purchase a new machine soon, I don't have a warm garage to do all these wonderful things on it now, its cold to able to work on it. Will it be ok to do these add ons in the spring?
Mike
Hey Michael! That would be an excellent plan! Even if you get a nice warm day you can jump on it! Thanks for your kind words! 👍
If you don't do this the job varies from hard to impossible getting a wheel or hub off. Even a well-exercised mechanics vocabulary is useless. Make this the first thing you do on a new purchase.
Absolutely! Couldn’t agree more!
"mix it up good"..........was that your Cheech Marin voice? Good one! 👍👍
Haha! Maybe! Thanks for watching, ECT! Stay awesome!
Good tutorial JB, just when I think you've done every video that has to do with a snowblower. I just did my Craftsman when I was prepping it for the upcoming winter season. except I used low temp white lithium grease. Anti-seize does a great job as well but it is so bad and gets everywhere. I have been hoping and praying we're not going to need a snowblower this winter in WNY but that usually never happens.
Hey Chris not to worry we’ll be getting snow soon enough! Smart man greasing those up!
Great video JB. I have a 24 Deluxe and grease and anti seize the axles in the spring and re check in the fall. I agree with you 100%, about Ariens , they could do a better job on corrosion protection. These machines are expensive in Canada. The manual also says to use high temp grease? i use low temp grease since we are using these machines in cold weather. Am i missing something here. Keep up the good work.
thanks for watching, Barry! I don’t think we are missing anything, but Ariens missed the mark not greasing those!
Great video JB something I need to do to my new one as well. Since getting the new one I have heard a lot of negativity around the auto turn function. When you start taking snow it’s tough to go straight. Wonder if this is something you would want to do a video on or if you have heard/experienced it.
Thanks!
Hey Nick! I’ll be keeping an eye on this once we get some snow here! Got nothing worth pulling out a snowblower for yet.
@@GarageGear
Absolutely no issues going in a straight line for my first run of 20cm wet heavy snow. Ariens has a great vid showing the proper way to level your machine.
Hey JB,
Great video! I actually just did this today. Regarding the left wheel, there is no E clip on this wheel correct? I thought I was missing it.
Also, the two bolts on the top of the belly pan are shorter than the other four.
Hey Paul! The left side is a single shaft only. Nothing to worry about on that one!
Hi JB, my carb leaks fuel in the service position (deluxe SHO) any ideas? thank you!
Hey Alex! I would drain the gas out before tipping it. Some snowblowers do this! Thanks for watching! 👍
I put a mark on the wheel to know wher put my wheel up before remove wheel and d'ont the key fall
Thanks for the tip!
Hey JB, What type of grease do you use on the drive sprocket?
I’ve used red and tacky grease or marine grease on those with success! 👍👍
Man, I put anti-sieze on the axles today but forgot the right side was two pieces. 😢
Donyboy made a video about this too. Kind of sad you have to do this to a brand new machine.
New or old it’s a great thing to do!
I have a question.. I have a new wheeled Honda. The service book says to remove the tires to complete an oil change. The oil drain is behind the tire. How do I go from the service position back to horizontal with no tire on it ? Or can I do the oil change while it's vertical? The manual is a bit vague. It doesn't show any jack points in it and where the snowblower is 250 lbs, I'm a bit worried to just drop it on blocks. maybe I could drop the non wheeled axel on a block ?
Yeah, Maybe you could do that or you could also Jack it up a bit. Thanks for watching.
Hey JB! I recently bought a used craftsman snowblower, I believe it’s a 1995 model, with the 5hp tecumseh engine, 5 speed fwd, 2 speed reverse. And the previous owner told me he uses 93 premium gas with stabilizer in it. Should I continue to use it as he has, or flush the system and use ethanol free gas ?
Hey Jonathan I would skip the flush and just start using ethanol free gas. You’ll be good to go with it! 👍 just use up whatever you have left in the tank then start pouring it in!
@@GarageGear thanks a bunch !!🙏🏽
Where's the snow? I already did all the stuff you show on your videos. So far 5.8" here in Erie Pa.. Somethings not right.
All we got are dustings by me! Two inches the one day. All melted the next. Too warm still. South of me got it pretty good. Don’t worry it’s coming!
JB, my lubrication of the drive axles are going to take some time. Mine are rusted to the axle and I ordered some PB Blaster to try to free them. Here's to PB Blaster......
Let that soak overnite for sure! Let me know how she goes!
@@GarageGear I unbolted the back panel and it has this rubberlike stuff all over the back panel. Can I sent you a picture of it?
@@hipguide1 that rubber dust is from your friction wheel and belts.
Hey JB...do you have any videos on changing the axle out?@@GarageGear
@@hipguide1 I do not at the moment unfortunately
why not put grease between the two shaft? because antiseize is not à lubrifiant, i use snowmobile grease for that
Either one works fine. Thanks for watching!
I just did this this morning on my new Deluxe 24”. Question I have: when you reassembled everything is there supposed to be like 1/8”-1/4” play side to side with the axles?
Yeah, they do that. It is common with Ariens. Thanks for watching!
@@GarageGear Ok, thank you for the quick response! Your videos are great, very knowledgeable and entertaining too
@@n_giantyeti appreciate your feedback. Thank you!
I just did the anti seize on the axle and put it back together. What I noticed however is that sitting still, the snowblower walks back very slowly now when I don't think it did before (maybe I didn't notice). I followed your instructions in the video. Any idea on why its happening? It's from the motor vibrating and making it go backwards.
Also, is it normal for there to be a slight gap between the tire and the side of the machine on each side that allows a little play between the tires when pushing them back and forth? I noticed theres like a 1/8 inch gap between the tire and the inside of the machine.
Hey spectre as far as the machine moving a little goes I have seen this before. Just make sure your drive plate isn’t touching the friction disc while in idle mode. If it is some adjustments will need to be made. Other than that it made just be the engine vibration causing the machine to move a little. Put a block of wood by a tire to keep it in place. The wheel gap you mentioned is also normal.👍
@@GarageGear Thanks for the tip, so it doesn't matter if melting snow gets on the 1/8 inch spot between the wheel and the snowblower body? It's exposed there when it slides back and forth.
One other thing is that I put some anti-seize on the teeth for the part that slides back in for the auto turn. Is this a big deal? I ran the snowblower today for a little snow we got and it didn't seem to cause an issue but you didn't put any on in the video.
@@spectre3492 hey spectre you could coat that gap with fluid film or some more anti seize. Either will do if you’re concerned about that space. A coating once a year should do!
Hey JB!! Hope All Is Well turns out it was my carb. Poor design but i use it 3x every snowfall because i take care of the snrs and my parents. So for bein 9 years old and following your vids its doing Very Well.
*gas in oil means carb - that a universally right statement?
Thanks JB!!
Hey Parabola! Glad your snowblower is doing so well with all these tips! Just clarify for me. Was there gas in your oil?
Yeah there was Gas in my oil. And the oil was pouring out the carb by a breather. (Its Pete Jb Im just a little S. Of ya "Ya need Merch!!")
@@Parabola_PJ hey Pete! Hmmm is your snowblower blowing a lot of smoke? If there is gas in your oil you may have a piston ring or other engine related issue. If there is oil in the carb somehow the oil is making its way up. Let me know.👍
Noticed that you are using anti-seize that has a high nickle content. Is this preferred over the high copper mixture?
Hey my friend! That’s a great question that I don’t have a perfect answer to but I can tell you this. I have used this same container for years and one application I did years ago held up fine. I took the wheels off three years later and it still looked good! 👍
@@GarageGearFrankly, I use the nickle version when changing my auto tires because that was all that was available on the store self when I bought the stuff. But my understanding is that the nickel anti seize is for nut and bolt threads and I should be using the copper based anti seize on car wheels and axle plates. However, I don't think it matters much in the snowblower application, although my car dealer used the copper version on the wheels and the bolts when I couldn't get my licence plate off. Cheers - enjoy your content.
