  • International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates LGBTIQ+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination.
In 2014, International Day against homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia, also known as IDAHOBIT was created to highlight the violence, discrimination and repression experienced by LGBTIQ+ people all over the world.
IDAHOBIT is acknowledged on 17th May when the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder, and the day is celebrated in over 130 countries.
There has been significant progress over the years; with multiple countries abandoning repressive anti-LGBTIQ+ laws and adopting marriage equality.
But millions of people around the world still suffer and struggle for such progress.
Even within our more accepting society, LGBTIQ+ people in Australia continue to experience high levels of discrimination, stigma, abuse and marginalisation in many aspects of their lives.
IDAHOBIT is a time to celebrate the resilience of LGBTIQ+ communities, to reach out and check in with the LGBTIQ+ people in your life, while recognising as Allies that we must play an important and active part in the fight against discrimination.
