The Illuminators: Scope for Change

Acknowledging and celebrating the beautiful, creative work of a scientifically and culturally diverse group of female-identifying microscopists from UNSW, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
People need role models that look like them. However, men hold more than 70% of senior academic positions and more than 95% of the prestigious Nobel Prizes in science are awarded to men. The message that this sends to those identifying as female is that science is either a profession that is not open to them, or one in which they will fail to flourish.
The road to gender equality in STEMM disciplines is long and complex, but the microscopists in this exhibition are here to reinforce that women can thrive in these fields; it is not restricted towards a particular “look”, gender or culture. ANYONE can become a scientist - you just need passion, drive and an open mind.
You do not need to have a scientific background to enjoy the art showcased by these hard-working, amazing women! The exhibition is designed to be educational and eye-opening for all levels.
