Don't get me wrong I loved LOVED Joaquin's joker
I got some amazing vibes off of his performance but for some reason Heath still has it at a next level that I don't think is easily passable with another actor.

True, Eckhart delivered a great performance and with a character that doesn't give the actor a lot - an idealistic dreamer and a decent person. But he found something in it that made the character memorable. His Dent wasn't just some idealistic, naive doofus, he was a real man - smart, educated, tough, courageous, but he just happened to choose a path that really couldn't have ended in any other but tragic way. Not in this world.
It's actually funny Nolan originally wanted Matt Damon, he wouldn't be half as good as Eckhart was.

The way the film was scripted I really hoped to see him back. I didn’t find out about his death until years afterwards and was utterly gutted - not only a shame he couldn’t find help, but also sad he didn’t get to see the recognition his act deserved. People may think his praise is tainted because of pity, but that’s not right. The acting was brilliantly disturbing and twisted yet darkly humorous without taking us all to a place of misery.

I watched TDK the other day, after not seeing it for years. It holds up, I think it's easily Christopher Nolan's best movie, it's the most well-rounded and original one, and one that found the best balance between commercial, accessible and epic filmmaking and something grounded, artful, thougtful and ambitious.
And it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Heath Ledger. His performance is just remarkable and rare, as Maggie Gyllenhaal adequatly puts it. Every little gesture, etc. was perfect, it was such a specifically crafted character. Besides Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone, I don't there is a more iconic game-changing performance than this. It elevates the entire movie.

No offense to Joaquin Phoenix, he's an incredible S tier actor, but he didn't bring the Joker to life the way Heath did, you weren't legitimately terrified of his Joker the same way, and yes part of that is the direction & setting of the film, but I still believe Heath far surpasses any other Joker

Not gonna lie. I don't even care to try to watch any new Joker movies. I'm sure eventually I'll give that one a shot, but I'm just really not interested. I have a solidified joker memory in my mind and its just perfect. I don't want a reenactment. I don't want to debate. If I watched it right now I'd just be comparing and dissecting.

Well that was because Joaquin's take was completely different. We are supposed to feel pity for the character. Whereas we were supposed to feel threatened from Heath's joker. Completely different plotlines. And both did a pretty damn job in doing their respective takes.

    • @cornbredx

They're different interpretations of the character in separate realities. I would argue there is little to compare beyond the fact that they are both called Joker. But really they're not the same person and a comparison is pretty moot. They're both solid performances of different people.
Jack Nicholson and Sid Caesar are also fantastic as the Joker. These two are more in line with what people see the Joker as in the DC universe so they make more sense to compare with Ledger, whom I believe was inspired by these two and some part Mark Hamill's interpretation as well. Heath took all that and created the most rounded character and was the best of those doing *that* character. Joaquin Phoenix took that established character, threw it away, and made a completely different character. It's no longer "The Joker" it's more "a Joker." I don't feel these two interpretations compare because of that.
If it was a more traditional Batman film than imo it would be different.

Not to piss on Joaquin Phoenix’s acting skills and the Academy Award, but I just can’t stop imagining what level of acting Heath Ledger would have achieved and how much higher he could’ve set the benchmark if he were still alive and had been a part of The Joker movie.... Just gives me chills

'See . . I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve.' Heath Ledger was AWEsome in 'the Dark Knight.' The Joker was so scary and so disturbing in a very skilled professional way that that 'performance' changed my memories of him in some of his movies that I saw and maybe didn't think were so great. Now, I'm like . . wow . . I saw Ledger in 'A Knight's Tale,' what a great movie that was, when I actually thought it was kinda weak. It's kinda true of life, too, though. You do ONE super amazing thing. It changes all you did and the future, too. Course. Ledger's gone now. Bane is up there, though, in 'the Dark Knight Rises.'
