    The Mist Movie Description:
After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.
The Mist (also known as Stephen King's The Mist) is a 2007 American science-fiction horror film based on the 1980 novella "The Mist" by Stephen King. The film was written and directed by Frank Darabont. Darabont had been interested in adapting "The Mist" for the big screen since the 1980s. The film features an ensemble cast, including Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Nathan Gamble, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, Frances Sternhagen, Buck Taylor, William Sadler, David Jensen, Sam Witwer, Alexa Davalos, Robert Treveiler, Chris Owen, Andy Stahl, and future The Walking Dead actors Jeffrey DeMunn, Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride, and Juan Gabriel Pareja.
The director revised the ending of the film to be darker than the novella's ending, a change to which King was amenable. Darabont also sought unique creature designs to differentiate them from his creatures in past films. Although a monster movie, the central theme explores what ordinary people are driven to do under extraordinary circumstances. The plot revolves around members of the small town of Bridgton, Maine, who after a severe thunderstorm causes the power to go out the night before, meet in a supermarket to pick up supplies. While they struggle to survive, an unnatural mist envelops the town and conceals vicious, Lovecraftian monsters as extreme tensions rise among the survivors.
Filming for The Mist began in Shreveport, Louisiana, in February 2007. The film was commercially released in the United States and Canada on November 21, 2007; it performed well at the box office and received generally positive reviews. Darabont has since revealed that he had "always had it in mind to shoot The Mist in black and white", a decision inspired by such films as Night of the Living Dead (1968) and the "pre-color" work of Ray Harryhausen. While the film's cinematic release was in color, the director has described the black-and-white print (released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2008) as his "preferred version."

@callmecatalyst I'm really glad to see that I'm not alone in this perspective. Maybe... okay, *probably* a large part of it is just how abysmally shitty that every TV movie of King's work is (It, Tommyknockers, The Langoliers, The Shining, and probably others I've forgotten), but while I'm sure King has written some fantastic stuff, and while directors like Stanley Kubrick have shown that King's books can be terrifying on the big screen with the proper adaptation, so much of his work seems to suffer the same few fatal flaws that keep it from reaching its peak potential:
-excessive amounts of characters, most of whom suck (The Mist, It, Langoliers, and Maximum Overdrive are all primary examples of this.)
-ridiculously bloated word counts (A book doesn't need to be 1100 pages to be scary. I'd argue in fact that a shorter, less detailed work that leaves more to the imagination will almost always be superior in this regard.)
-nonsensical and oftentimes contradictory logic (The entire plot of Maximum Overdrive can't seem to decide on a definitive source of the hostile machine animation, while other stories like The Mist and The Langoliers seem to be happy to barely explain anything about why the plot is happening the way it is.)
-most of the scares are just existing ideas that King stole and slapped his own dumb names onto (To paraphrase the Nostalgia Critic, 'instead of aliens, they're 'Tommyknockers'; instead of a 'demon,' there's 'It.')
How King got so popular and remains such for half a century utterly baffles me. I can't help but feel a big part of it is either continuous exposure or him being propped up and peddled by someone in the media. Either way, it's bullshit.

It’s called “herd mentality”, Mell ^^ and it’s pretty common in such stressful fear fueled scenarios. People abandon common sense and listen to the person that speaks the loudest and with the most conviction. It’s unfortunately a psychological thing that a lot of people fall victim to. Not sure what would enable someone to overcome it, maybe a higher tolerance of fear but regardless, it’s something that you’ll see in many such movies where a large group of people is left (look at Train of Busan for instance)

Everybody is scared, and fear makes you irrational, now the crazy lady that everyone previously made fun of is now an extremist cult leader ordering people to be sacrificed. And the people will do it because they rely on her to fix the problem and know the answers because she make a few key predictions that came true. The painting of the cowboy with the tower, the door and the rose at the beginning is actually Roland Deschain of Gilead, one of the most important character in Stephen King's book universe.
Basically, in the Dark Tower book saga, it is explained that every reality plane are linked together into a cohesive balance by a pylon, the Dark Tower. Roland is looking for the tower in order to save his own world, on the verge of destruction. This "link" between existences is the way King's linked every single one of his books and novels together. This is why you see characters from one book appears or being namedropped in others etc.
Examples : Father Callahan from the Salem's Lot books is also a main character in the Dark Tower. Pennywise from "It" is vanquished with the help of a "spirit turtle", which made little sense in the book "It", but is further explained in the Dark Tower. Etc, etc.
The Dark Tower saga is the cornerstone of every book King's ever written and will write in the future

Also, the actors in this film - so damned great, their reactions feel so genuine, not over acted or hammy, not flat. Really love this film...and after COVID, the way people reacted? Yeah, 100% people will do that.
I think the big thing with this movie, is that the true monsters aren't the creatures outside in the mist but what lurks within people.
Love you picked the bloke from Force Unleashed! Great spotting!
Small little bit of cool trivia, the Steven King story this is based on inspired the 1998 video game Half Life (If you've never played the original, it follows a scientist fighting his way out of the secret military base after an experiment goes wrong opening a doorway to another universe allowing monsters/aliens to flow into our world)

I can't remember what they did in the movie, but in the book, they barricaded the windows and doors with pallets of dog food. It made sense because they're heavy and they didn't need it. A grocery store is just about the perfect place to hold up during an apocalyptic crisis because they have everything you need there. Food, water, soap, even grills to cook the meat. For the generator, they could have unhooked the exhaust from the wall and attached a hose to run under the door to keep the coolers running until they ate all the food in them, then start on the canned goods.

the thing i like about this and 1408 specifically of SK's work (an movie adaptations of) is the way that they both reflect human conciousness in an enclosed space where social norms, rules and/or expectations no longer exist. In 1408 we see Robert and his own mind in an enclosed environment, and how the single mind can unravel under extreme stress or duress, forced into fight or flight in deadly circumstanes, whereas here we see how the human mind en masse can be unravelled under similar super/preternatural situations also in an enclosed, heightened space, an also under the same threat of "survive or face the hellish deadly unknown"

I LOVE the fact that you new it was Samuel Witwer right away! The OG star killer and voice of Darth Maul. Finally someone mentions him in a reaction video! Great job man

Love that you showed more of the beginning scenes where they weren’t believing. Had the same reaction, “what is you talkin bout??”

For Stephen King books, the most scary in a disturbing and heartbreaking way is definitely Pet Semetary.

One of the worst/greatest endings to a movie I've ever seen. Lol I remember standing up and putting my hands on my head in shock when I first saw it years ago

I don't remember who said it, but there was an interview with one of the production staff of this film and he said that one thing about this movie that a lot of people overlook is the fact that despite her being completely unlikeable Mrs. Carmody was right about sacrifice. She may not have known how or why she was right, but everything she says about sacrifice is proven over and over again throughout the film. The tentacle monster goes away after it takes that first guy, the bugs stop attacking after one stings that girl and had the pterodactyl not been on fire they all would've left after they took that one guy's neck, the pharmacy doesn't count because they went into the spider's place so the rules were different, but after the monster took Ollie they were able to leave, but the point is ultimately proven when Mrs. Carmody says "We'll take the boy and the whore too" referring to the blonde lady and then later after they were all killed (aka sacrificed) what happened? The military showed up and the mist went away. The final scene exampled the forms of acceptable ancient sacrifice offerings, the old people represented the non-threatening and wise, the blonde lady represented the caregiver, and the little boy represented purity and innocence. This is by far my favorite Stephen King movie because there's so much to unpack with it like for example the whole movie being a metaphor of going through seasons of hardship in your life where patience and hope and faith that you'll get through it will get you through anything which is exampled in the short haired lady's actions in the film as she made it to the end and assumingly the people back at the store as well. However, for those who refused to be patience, hold onto hope, and had no faith that everything would clear up, what happened? They ended up with a fate that equaled death or something worse than death in Thomas Jane's character. There's so much to unpack with this movie it's insane. I'm so happy you reacted to this, this is by far my favorite reaction of yours, your roast skills are on point. Lol

So glad I saw this in theaters when it came out, it was such a fun experience. This is one that made the crowd go nuts, from screaming from fear to joy like when they kill Mrs. Carmody

As devastating as the ending was, the sacrifice of the solider upset me more than anything. Otherwise, I love watching you crack yourself up and being startled at the jump scares.

This movie left me in disbelief, but it also shows you the mindset of scared and desperate humans that are under distress. A cult mindset, of those that are easily influenced of finding a leader through chaos by all means necessary. The ending was a great result of all of this, sprinkled with a taste of impatience and losing hope. But that bbq chicken joke as a Black woman did leave me cracking up with the subtle pun, whether folks see it or not. 😩😂

And I mean, the whole revelations and creatures of hell talk is a lot more plausible when you're cornered by a bunch of otherworldly monsters
