    Midsommar Movie Description:
A couple travel to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
Midsommar is a 2019 folk horror film written and directed by Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, and Will Poulter. It follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival that occurs once every 90 years, only to find themselves in the clutches of a Scandinavian pagan cult.
A co-production between the United States and Sweden, the film was initially pitched to Aster as a straightforward slasher film set among Swedish cultists. Aster devised a screenplay using elements of the concept, but made a deteriorating relationship the central conflict after he experienced a difficult breakup. The music was composed by British electronic musician Bobby Krlic. The film was shot on location in Budapest in the summer and autumn of 2018.
Midsommar was theatrically released in the United States on July 3, 2019, by A24 and in Sweden on July 10, 2019, by Nordisk Film. The film grossed $47.9 million and received positive reviews from critics, with many praising Aster's direction and Pugh's performance.

The bear suit death is worse than you think. Because it was still meaty, wet, and fresh - the incredible heat from the fire would dry the carcass in minutes. So? The suit would shrink, rapidly, the leather tough enough to turn the human inside into soup. Crushing bones and all. Sounds too crazy to be true? Certain Native American tribes from the greater south west of the U.S would torture captives in much the same way. Save for the bear being a bison, or other large game animal, and them being suspended over a fire having what you see happen in the movie take several days before: snap! Crunch! Splat!
    Happy Halloween.

The scene where they mimic the main character screaming and crying after she finds her boyfriend with that girl is one of the most important scenes in the film. It's meant to show her getting the support she's lacked from her boyfriend & friends for the whole movie.
He ignores her calls, wasn't there when her family dies, forgot her birthday, guilt tripped her non stop, etc. The friends don't hide their dislike for her. She feels it and even dreams of them abandoning her.The cult in that act was saying they are there and will feel what she feels with her. No matter how loud or ugly it is. They validate her pain.
It's the final straw of acceptance between her and them and is seemingly what encourages her decision later. She chose them over him or new over old.

Problem is you are taking "shrooms". As one person put it, if you can "get" pure LSD then it takes you where *you* want to go, shrooms take you where *they* want you to go, which you have no control over at all, and other stuff like peyote takes you where *someone else* wants you to go (hence the guidance of a story to 'lead you' to the path they want you to follow).
Note however that with LSD being illegal, like almost all such lab made drugs, it is almost never pure (i.e., never just the active ingredient by itself, which is safe), but will always have impurities, or shit that the seller "added in", to stretch out the product. These are BAD things to have in there, so.. ironically, the theoretically "safest" one is the hardest to find (since all of its impure versions are a crap shoot of, "I have no idea what this will actually do to me, including hurt me, if they put something truly stupid in it). Of course, with the "logic" that is sometimes used by our government, the "bad" version might just be spiked by people, "Trying to stop drugs.", by basically just figuring that anyone taking them is a rat, and thus if a few die from figurative rat poison...

I'm swedish and regognize what is going on, but Aster has taken bits and pieces from ca 1000 years of changing rituals/traditions. The old people jumping is from the Viking-era. If you died in your bed you wouldn't go to Valhalla, so if you didn't die in battle you threw yourself of a designated precipice called "Ättestupan". "Stupa" is "to fall in battle" and "Ätte" comes from '"Ancestor". The spells are from a later era. Even today we have that dance ariund the May-pole" which is a great phallic symbolplunged into mother earth. Not many centuries ago a bad harvest 2 years in a row would mean death to whole communities. The swedish exodus to the US in the 1800s was a result of such draught. Anyone interested in more details can just ask. (Btw, thanks to Covid we couldn't find a bear this year....)

@@j4r3d29 You have 4 different forms of runes. the elder and younger futhark, the anglo-saxion futhark and the armanen futhark. I think Aster used the elder futhark since that is easier to read. "Thurisaz" means The Strong one, strenghth against hardship. "Raidho" means travel, a chariot or journey. it is often symbolised as an 8-spoke wheel. Make of this what you want, and thank you for being curious! (This is the magical interpretation of the runes. It could just have been the initials of those that created the place)

This is easily one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. It is so well constructed to keep you off guard. Once the Cliff scene happens, the film never allows you to get your grounding and figure out what is actually happening again until the very end when it’s too late. It is the disorientation itself that makes the film work so well as a horror film. If you could stop and think about what was happening, you’d be able to get yourself out of the situation or recognize the overall weakness of the plan. Because you are never quite able to ground yourself in reality, it all sneaks up on your and feels so unavoidable

True, true. But in that moment Dani gets what she desperately wants: to know that her emotions are valid and that she has a support system. Christian definitely doesn't deserve his fait, but he's distant with her through out the movie and seems to view her and her emotions as a burden which only compounds her insecurities. She's found in the cultists that which Christian is unwilling/incapable of giving her.

    • @vadalia3860
      @vadalia3860 2 года назад +12

The thing is that Dani hasn't *wanted* to cry, feel, or scream alone, for the whole movie. In the beginning of the movie, after an extremely short time grieving in the presence of an unresponsive Christian, Dani always separates herself from others to feel her emotions. Not because she wants to, but because she fears her emotions & grief will annoy or inconvenience & drive away the others, leaving her truly alone. But, as Pelle pointed out with his "do you feel held" question- having people physically with you doesn't mean much if they're not responsive to you emotionally. The communal scene with the women is what Dani had been looking for- by sharing in her emotions, the woman validate what she's feeling. And by staying with her throughout her turmoil, they show a sense of community and love because they want to be there for her and help her through it and are willing to even go so far as to feel it with her.

We saw this in the theater & when they witnessed the first sacrifices off the cliff, I knew none of the visitors were ever going home. It was just a matter of how it would all unfold. In Midsommar and also Hereditary, a TRAP was laid for the characters before the film has even started & it's just a matter of the characters walking through that maze. I think Ari Aster's films play with the idea of predetermined fate vs. free will. And also, are things as they seem, or is there some underlying "machination" driving us forward according to its plan?

Hey Mell, at 30:07, whey you say, "that's a nice shot right there"...go back and pause and take an even closer look. With Dani on that platform to the right of the screen, you can make out the image of her dead sister in the outline of the trees on the left of the screen, gas hose and all. I know its a tough watch, but thats why its a masterpiece. Ari Aster is such a craftsman at visual storytelling, its impossible to pick everything up he does upon first viewing. He purposefully makes his movies to be watched several times. We all like to rewatch movies that entertain us, but imagine a director so talented, he compels you to rewatch not because you had such a "good time" but because you know there's always something new to pick up on. We havent had someone with a vision like this since David Lynch first came on the scene 40 years ago. He is hoping to branch out from the "horror" genre (or label, anyway) and I personally cant wait to see what he does with his career. If he can hit homeruns across multiple genres, dare I say the unthinkable..Aster could be up there with the likes of Stanley Kubrick when all is said and done.

And.. the perfect candidate to be preyed on by a lot of other "cults" too, which are not considered cults. I often find it quite odd how, when someone is vulnerable, certain "pious" people come out of the wood work, to "help" them - help them right into being self righteous jerks, who, the second they are "in the group" suddenly discover that all future "problems" they might have are a result of not tragedy, but lack of piety, and no more help is forthcoming (for them at least, but that other grieving person the congregation caught the scent of...)

    • @patrickelliott2169

@@adgato75 You disagree because the cult in the movie was crazier than the normal ones? Sorry, but "evil" comes in many forms, and vulnerable people a) never think the think they are falling in with is evil, and b) when you take someone who is that vulnerable, isolate them from outside information, feed them some flavor of community and/or hope, etc.
This is literally how all cults, even the ones that we pretend are not so bad, because they claim to be a church, but do nothing but hate everyone outside that church, do things - they find someone having difficulties, they promise them community and hope, once they have control over them they either completely isolate them (like in this movie) on some patch of property where the outside world can't derail the brain washing, or they, over a longer time, "guide" those people away from friends, family, etc., with declarations of, "Did any of these things help you?", actively discourage them from asking questions, or seeking outside information, and in the world of the internet this also means guiding them "towards" online sources that push the same story, and solutions, and ideas, while further convincing them that *everyone else* is lying.
But, the key here is not "how bad" the cult is - it is, "Do they use isolation, brain washing, and recruit vulnerable people?" This insane event is merely an "extreme" version - and, unfortunately, it likely provides a sort of salve on the conscience of anyone that might suspect that some people around them are pushing them in a similar direction. As in, "Well, my group only wants me to protect gay funerals, not actually murder people, so it can't be a cult." - right up until they are so deep into it that they can't see *everything else it does* which is more of the same cult behavior.

This is one of my favorite horror movies, I’m so glad you got to watch it!
    A few things to explain:
    1. The screaming scene is them “sharing her pain” Just like they screamed when the old man was in pain. Kind of a shallow way of showing empathy.
    2. When this came out a lot jokes went around that weak and toxic relationships wouldn’t survive a viewing of this movie because Dani and her boyfriend were so bad for each other.
    3. Ari Astor wrote a first draft of the script after he went through a breakup, so dude was going through A LOT.
    4. Movie tricked a few people into thinking this was a happy ending, just like Dani got tricked by the cult.

The wailing, they do that when Danny cries because it's a false and powerful display of empathy. They take her pain, show they feel it too, and in their cries they steal her individually in her pain. They make her feel understood but really they are drowning out her cries and her pain becomes a part of the group pain, dissolving her in the process.

@@SachshoT That's not true. Ättestupan is mentioned by Prokopios in his description of the herules as far back as 500 AD. Solinus also mentions it when describing the hyperboreans of the North Pole. Also called "Ätteklubban". As for the Swedish tradition, the first record we have of it in written form is from the 1600's in the Islandic "Götrikssagan" where it is called "ætternisstapi". That is to say that is the only remaining artifact describing it in Swedish, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a practice before that.
I think you are getting your disbelief from the language researcher Adolf Noreen, who completely negated it ever having existed. He - like people claiming the Holocaust never happened - can have his views, but there are certainly older documents describing the practice older than Noreen.

The Bible is a fine source of historical events, even though it's been diluted by re-translations ad infinitum. The only real trace of human traditions and customs in ancient history is given to us through your "stories and mythology" sources. Where else would we get the information on what actually happened in those times?
In fact, reading translated ancient documents tells us a HUGELY different story of history than the school systems teach about our forefathers. I'm talking high technology, Gods (aliens?), and free energy. Read up on Lemuria and Atlantis.
It is a psychological phenomenon of our times that it is easy to write fiction. To tell stories and mythologies. But why would the ancient forefathers carve stories that weren't true into stone? Would you do that? Would you carve Stephen King's The Stand into stone? Consider the living arrangements of those times. Or perhaps, it was meant as a message and a warning to future generations, NOT "stories and mythologies".

In this commune (which is basically just a cult.) They act as one sentient being, with each person being a part of the being. Whenever one member feels a certain way, the others around them try to emulate that feeling. It shows that the other one is accepted and part of the group. This explains the people groaning when the old man broke his leg, screaming when the Ingmar and Ulf were burning in the temple, and moaning with Maya during the mating ritual. The other girls crying with Dani shows that she is finally accepted, and finally has a home and a family, for better or for worse.

i took magic mushrooms and thought I was king of the sheep....every time i whistled they would move.....wasn't till years later that i got told that they're reacting to what a shepherd would whistle to his dog

12:49 I watched this high af on my second viewing and noticed their clothes colors have meaning in this scene. The people wearing dark colors are killed by the cult, but Christian is slightly red indicating lust. Dani is a light pink closest to white but that changes to dark blue during the suicide scene which I took that was her point furthest away from joining the cult. Josh is wearing an off white shirt, he knows the traditions but he’s really not apart of the cult nor would they fully accept him.

This film had me constantly stuck between my desire to be accommodating and respectful of someone’s indigenous culture, and the growing gnawing horror that something is terribly wrong. Coasting that edge the whole film is much like being conditioned, inoculated to trauma, groomed, desensitised, left mentally vulnerable to a predatory force to swoop in. Genius.
One thing that very few people talk about is that, while the boyfriend was a completely emotionally distant tit the whole film, he was essentially drugged and coerced into sex. That would fall under rape charges. He was unable to consent, and is being used for a fertility ritual he wasn’t privy to before he arrived. If he had been a girl, people would find it absolutely sickening. If you are on drugs and then have sex, it’s fine if you don’t feel upset or have qualms with having had sex after the fact. But lots of people can sober up and feel disturbed, humiliated, degraded or scared they weren’t in control that it happened.

I'm sorry, I would have fought tooth and nail, not accept S. Idc how much acid I'm on. He never cared about Dani and it showed. I'd say the same if the genders were reversed.
