Sinister Movie Description:
True-crime writer Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hawke) is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.
Sinister is a 2012 supernatural horror film directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Fred Thompson, and Vincent D'Onofrio. The plot revolves around true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Hawke) whose discovery of Super 8 home movies depicting grisly murders found in the attic of his new house puts his family in danger.
Sinister was inspired by a nightmare co-writer C. Robert Cargill had after watching the 2002 film The Ring. Principal photography on Sinister began in Autumn of 2011 with a production budget of $3 million. To add the authenticity of old home movies and snuff films, the Super 8 segments were shot on actual Super 8 cameras and film stock. The film was a co-production between the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
The film premiered at the SXSW festival. It was released in the United States on October 12, 2012, and in the UK on October 5, 2012. Sinister received positive reviews, praising the acting, direction, music, cinematography, and atmosphere, but received some criticism for its use of jump scares (most notably the lawnmower scene) and horror cliches. The film was a box office success, grossing $87.7 million against its budget of $3 million. The film's financial success spawned a sequel, Sinister 2, released in the United States on August 21, 2015.

Whats The Scariest Movie You've Ever Seen?!
Dead silence
Inside, the original French version.

Yuh
Women in black
"What type of attic you got? A portal to Australia?" Had me rolling!
that was hilarious lol hahahah 🤣🤣
@@jeniveth997 Especially since it was just a kingsnake.
@@shadowprince4482 And the scorpion was an Asian forest scorpion, so had no business being there in the first place lol
This movie was one of the few modern horror movies to legitimately scared me. It doesn't help that I fell asleep with it (accidentally) on repeat and so over the course of the night, my sleep patterns had sinister as a background to feed my dreams. Not fun ahahahaha
I did the same thing. I fell asleep and the music and the counting on the menu of the dvd kept repeating. Very creepy to sleep and wake up to.
Oh gosh
Same as me. A friend of mine told me about this movie are so scary. At first i dont trust him, since i really dont scare watching horror movie. But after watching this movie, i realize that i need to open all light in my house, because i legimately feels scare🤣
same usually i'm not the type of person who get scared by stuff easily but this movie makes me not wanna move to another house
I wish doing that worked on my fear of deep water, because I fell asleep to Jaws, Surfs Up, 47M Deep (Down?), and a huge variety of ocean based movies.
still would be hard pressed to makee me get in that shit
That pool scene was shot for real, with the actors actually being pulled into the pool and the demon guy actually standing there. All of them being given oxygen by divers. Thats the moment I would of said "Nope, you CGI me in there or I quit"
Another interesting piece of trivia; In the hanging scene, the first stunt coordinator they had messed up, so the actors actually got choked. They all survived, but they were legitematly struggling to breathe in that scene. The stunt coordinator got fired, obviously.
@@sertu1462 If that's real, I'm GLAD he got fired. He legit almost killed someone.
@@sertu1462 omg 😳 why didn’t they fix the rope to the back/shoulders or something like this??
The lawnmower scene is my favorite jumpscare of all time.
Same the only one that ever really got me haha
For real. That was a true scare.
me too, I jumped every time I see that scene fucking scary
That one never scared me but had me laughing so hard. Maybe I'd be scared if I saw it in theaters.
Man, don't worry about screaming, covering your eyes etc. Those are your authentic reactions which is exactly what everyone's here for. Great video as always man, keep up the good work but don't forget to take some time for yourself if you need it
Don't agree with "the covering of the eyes" simply due to the risk of the reactor missing out on something truly worth reacting too (or just something important).
"Don't worry daddy, I will make you famous again"... That line deserves an award, medal, or something. Each time I hear that line, it just chills me to the soul. Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hawke) showed many times that he cared more about writing another bestseller and getting the attention/fame he did with his True Blood novel.
!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!
His name was all over the papers and news and t.v., so he got exactly what he wanted.
You may not like watching horror movies . But we like watching your reaction 😂
“They was hanging out alright.”
I actually gasped lmao
Caught me by surprise!
“How can people just sit here & watch scary movies?”
Me: but it’s spooky season 🧍🏾♀️
Yeah I was like “Whatchu mean? This is the PERFECT time (October) to watch scary movies!”
This is a horror movie that gave me serious creeps. Like, I would NOT want to watch this alone and in the dark. Stupidly I did when I first saw it.
I saw it in theaters then tried and failed to sleep with my kid in the crib next to me... i could HEAR his breathing...
I know, rigth? It does have a few jump scares, but what gets you is the building of dread throughout. The sound design and soundtrack is really good too.
Fun fact, the music wasn't made for this movie, the maker found the artist on RUclips and thought it was perfect for the movie so bought the rights to it
I think it is used in a documentary about Norwegian Black Metal called " Until the Light takes us"
It's a band called Ulver. Used to be a black metal band but transitioned into jazz and electronica. Actually one of my favorite bands.
Good decision The music during the scene where Ethan Hawke is burning the film is terrific and creepy.
@@robincraft4682 IIRC that was “Gyroscope” by Scottish duo Boards of Canada.
@@AutoPilate thanks! I will give it a listen.
I grew up on scary movies. They never really scared me. But there is something about this movie that got me. Probably because it wasn't so fantastical and far fetched. It seemed like some shit that could really happen.
This movie and Dead Silence up there for scariest films for me
@@TiciTotyTony don’t talk about that movie that movie terrifies me to this day. I feel like I got PTSD flashbacks hearing that name!
That is EXACTLY why this is the most frightening Horror Movie EVER MADE!
@@TiciTotyTonyI love dead silence
Sinister is one of the few horror films in the 2010s that is actually scary, not just trying to make you jump every five minutes. It has jump scares, but builds tension first, which is how to do it right. Real horror is not about startling you, it's about making you nervous and uneasy. Sinister does that very well. You should watch and react to Oculus, another great horror movie from the past decade.
For me this and Hereditary are two movies that are just painfully good at creating an atmosphere of cold terror. Freaky shit dude! Love your reaction as always
“I hope y’all don’t get mad at me turning away”….no! You LOOK AT IT!!!!!!! How dare you have a genuine reaction!
Cute that you said sorry for covering your face or looking away. Seriously? Why do you think we're here! *sidegrin* I don't scare easy at all so it's fun to watch this movie have the desired effect. It actually made you jump out of and run from your chair, that's amazing. Admittedly, this is one of the scariest films out there. You feel so stuck in his home with him...in the dark...watching those reels. It's unnerving. PS I love your dance breakouts!
Dude, this movie was so unsettling, right from the first frame. Even the soundtrack of the reel sequences was on another level.
I swear to f…😂I need a compilation of all Mell’s high pitched jump squeals in one video. I love u, man. Lol
Glad you're watching my current horror favorite. And yeah, that lawnmower scene still gets me every time...
This week is a really hard one for me emotionally because of some personal stuff. But seeing you uploaded just brightened up my day for a little bit! Thanks!
Same here. It’s a nice distraction from our lives ✌️
You jumped into the deep end here, sweetie. This movie scares the HELL out of me, and I adore the writing and performances. I watch it hugging a pillow, so you can jump, turn your face, trust we're yelling at the screen with you!
MELL DANCING TO BOARDS OF CANADA IS THE GREATEST THING EVER
I love watching your horror movie reactions because the way you react is so genuine. Turn away, hide, yell, it's all cool. I'm just enjoying seeing one of my favourite horror movies disturb someone
I remember after i watched this i went to the gym in my apartments at night and i was alone on the treadmill which was facing the pool and that scene of him walking under the water in the pool popped in my head and i scared my own damn self i left outta there fast af😂😂😂
This was the best horror movie I had seen in years. I first watched it a couple years back. I'm surprised there aren't more reactions to it.
Sinister is one of my absolute favorite horror movies! Great choice to watch!
I wouldn't say I consider this one of my favorite horror movies, but I will say the snuff films and the music that goes along with them is absolute genius. That aspect of the movie gives such an intense feeling of dread that I think makes it unique.
Nice reaction as always, Mell.
Yeah this is definitely up there for me, love the atmosphere and concept
I adore this movie. Just super unsettling the whole way and generally just really evil
Evil is the right word. To me it’s the Most unflinching and evil film since the Exorcist IM humble O. Very few horror films achieve a level of being truly evil. Quite an accomplishment.
Totally agree
This movie haunted me with it's filmmaking and supernatural element. And also Ethan Hawk is always amazing
The truest victim is the wife and the son. Particularly the wife, she was 100% correct
No, they aren’t. The whole family is the victim lol.
@@AvEnGeD7X238 nah the father is a dickhead who never should of moved into that house.
@@jackieelizabeth8614 does not mean he deserved to die
@@jackblanton8184 no one said he deserved to die?
Yeah the wife was helpfull all the time doing...
This is easily the scariest, most disturbing film I've seen in the past 10 years. Only seen it once. Hesitant to watch it again. Really well done film though. And Ethan Hawke is excellent, as usual.
I’m a horror connoisseur. With very high standards for my horror. And very few genuinely scare me or fill me with dread. But two that are brilliant at it are the films Hereditary and a film called Mama. You should give them a go cause they are both seriously creepy, unflinchingly scary, and deeply doom filled. The film Mama is seriously underrated because it’s genuinely terrifying.
I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this movie because the music during the 'home videos' is off of an album called 'Silence Teaches you how to Sing' from a band called Ulver, whom I've been listening to for like 25 years and love.
Lmao yes! THIS IS THE ONE, MELLOW! I was hoping you’d react to this this month!
Damn, everyone’s uploading good movie reactions today. Such a good, genuinely scary movie. Definitely need to check the patron reaction!
Saw this movie in theatres, don't think I'll ever forget Lawn Work.
I appreciate you willing to watch a genre you dont normally like, Horror is a good window into themes and fears of society at the time the movie was made (slasher films were the perfect embodiment of unknown intruders into suburban life is the easiest example).
The portal to Australia joke had me dying. 🤣
"A portal to Australia?!?"omg i was laughing so hard! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into uploading these reactions
I love how u thought the kids weren't the murderers lmao
Your reactions to horror movies shows that you have a good heart. And you're not desensitized.
"Portal to Australia!" Lol!😂
This movie started so strong with the 8mm films, sound design, Ethan hawke giving a good performance, but then they had to go and Baghuul it up
loved this film. had the right amount of erieeness and - pardon the pun - sinisterness to it. love that we are intorduced to this via the main character as though its some regular serial killer true crime shit but it turns out to be supernatural. Also, Ethan Hawke is so criminally underrated, another amazing performance by him. the lore of the evil here was pretty tight, it keeps you interested for sure. lastly, that score is amazing too.
You should do more horror movies. This reaction and The Mist was very entertaining sorry 😅. You should watch The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor if you haven't yet.
When watching scary movies and shows you should watch with a pillow or blanket. Something to grab on when you're scared, maybe it will help.
This was so funny, love the scary movie reactions😂
One of the best horror movie soundtracks ever. I use it at Halloween most years.
This is my absolute favorite horror movie. Just the opening had me thinking “oh so that’s the kind of movie I’m in for.”
Fun fact the director had a nightmare of the tree hanging scene which gave him the idea of this movie.
Cover your eyes all you need, just keep those screams coming!🤣🤣
you and billy binges are some of the most fun expressionists great job i cover my face and eyes a lot watching scary movies! keep going woo mellverse!
These movies were made with extreme care and precise story telling genuinely some of the best horror movies I’ve seen and I’m so glad your watching it keep up the good work yo!!💯
Omg I had so much fun watching you watch the movie. You are so fun to watch, you get into it 100%. You pull your audience in with you. Thank you for your awesome reaction, you’ve got yourself a new subscriber!
Mello😂 Your scared reactions make your channel the best of its kind...
I'm trying to tell y'all the mell jumpscares are classic
Nice choice, Mello! This is kind of a fun one! Bet you love the way the history/mystery is told/revealed.
I just want you to know as much as you were having a terrifying time I was laughing my ass off! Great content!
Long time viewer, first time commenting. I want to recommend INSIDIOUS. If you haven’t seen it of course. Oh and I love the Spartan intro ✌️
Insidious had me sweating like crazy when I first saw it. Definitely most scared I’ve ever been in a movie
He needs to see the Conjouring
I remember watching this as a kid and this one legitimately scared tf out of me and the concept is really unique in the horror world where most things have been done to death
Brand new sub here. “You know Demons now days they follow you now” had me rolling 😂 keep up the good work!
Yeah , that cracked me up.
Hey MellVerse. Thanks for these vids you put out. I enjoy them a lot. I love seeing your reactions and I feel like we're hanging out watching together! It makes me feel less lonely and brings a little joy to my day. So, thank you. :>
I love this movie so much I have been watching any reactions to this that i can find and yours was the most entertaining by far!!!! Good shit bro
Thank you for doing this one! One of my favorites!
Howdy dude! From Kazakhstan! Love ur reactions! Continue doing this!!!
idk why but him dancing to the music was takin me out ☠️ this film does have an incredible soundtrack
I don't know why, but this October every reactor it's picking up great scary movies to react to. Great reaction by the way, dude :)
Love your reactions sir, and as a horror film fan, thank you for going out of your element for October.
Man, your face at 15:39 looked stressed, this movie didn't make me jump but I definitely felt that stress, this movie was terrifying. I really felt a bit bad at that point for laughing at the previous jump scares.
This was the best horror reaction I've seen this year. I might join your Patreon and donate for a few more horror suggestions.
bro, your reactions are hilarious
You’re reaction to jump scares is the best! 😂
Bro these are the most hilarious and classic jump scare reactions from you 😂😂😂😂 🤦👍
20:07 He fucking danced to the "Gyroscope" soundtrack! Hahaha
Mello I love you !
Ethan Hawke is one of my favourite actors! I’d definitely recommend checking out ‘Boyhood’ (filmed over a ten/15 year period, I believe! It’s awesome!)
😂😂 One of my favorite modern horror movies. Sound design was amazing. You had me dying. You were shitting yourself jumping. Might be the funniest reaction I've ever seen. Movie is creepy af. Especially in the dark at night by yourself. The lawnmower scene is effed
I love horror movies and have seen plenty over the years but this film truly scared me and still does. The sound track I think makes it 10 times more horrifying. Great film
I agree
This man is hella underrated great video
I love your reacts, you always keep it real
The way bros smile faded away at 14:24 is killing me bruh! 😂
10:05 DAMMINT u got mr sgsin, jumpscard hahahahahah
I know some people give you shit for being scared during... a scary movie; but I think of it as a blessing. Because you can truly experience the movie in that way. And sharing it with us, thank you for the reactions sir.
P.s. I believe that Sinister and Insidious movies or scripts were made by same people. Like, they announced a possible crossover in the future.
Lol you scared me several times whenever you screamed. 😂 😂 😱 😱 This is why I only watch scary movies via react videos on RUclips. Lol.
Lmao your reaction was the same as mine. I wanna thank the soundtrack for that mostly!
when mello said he kidnapped the older son, my mind goes straight to that se7ven scene, "oh he doesnt know" 😂
I watched this movie when it came out, alone at home at 11pm like " Oh what's this movie ? ". I almost had a heart attack, it was so scary. So you had a good reaction then !
This movie scared me good. Watched it by myself and had to look away for more than half the scary scenes...and I am a horror movie buff🤣Great reaction 🤗
The music playing in the “Family BBQ” video has got to be some of the most unsettling music I’ve ever heard in film.
You had me cracking up laughing with you screaming! Tooo Funny!!!!
The second one is also worth watching. The death scenes are way more brutal in that one though 😰
Loved this reaction!!
LMMFAOOOOO your scream made me hollerrrr 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you’re hilarious
This is a really underrated horror flick. At the time I saw it, everybody was raving about Insidious. I enjoyed Insidious, but this one creeped me out way more. It stuck with me longer, and for many of the reasons you named at the end. I'm glad you enjoyed it! This was entertaining af. >:D Only thing as good as being scared, is watching other people get scared. lol
Lmfaooooo a portal to Australia 😂
I remember in 2012, when this movie came out (I was 15) and my dad and little brother and I went to see it on Halloween night. It scared the living hell outta me and my brother xD neither of us could sleep that night. To this day i think it's one of the best horror movies. Most horror movies today don't scare me, but sinister definitely did its job well.
Oh I need to rewatch those two movies again
That scream at 16:50 was hilarious 😂
Such a underrated film such a intense journey from the lighting to sound design to pacing this film was great
Man I love this movie. Few movies scare me and this one did 😂 Love the 8mm film and the creepy vibe this movie gives you!! As always great reaction👍
Mellos screams of terror for some reason give me serotonin.
I think it’s because I’ve watched horror to the point I’m empty inside so to see someone who still gets scared is so wholesome 😂
4:02 the dancing killed me lmfaoo
Awesome reaction man
I watched this for the first time a few nights ago, alone and in the dark, and was surprised at how not scared I was.
