    THE THING 1982 Movie Description:
In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter and written by Bill Lancaster. Based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?, it tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any one of them could be the Thing. The film stars Kurt Russell as the team's helicopter pilot, R.J. MacReady, and features A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles.
Production began in the mid-1970s as a faithful adaptation of the novella, following 1951's The Thing from Another World. The Thing went through several directors and writers, each with different ideas on how to approach the story. Filming lasted roughly 12 weeks, beginning in August 1981, and took place on refrigerated sets in Los Angeles as well as in Juneau, Alaska, and Stewart, British Columbia. Of the film's $15 million budget, $1.5 million was spent on Rob Bottin's creature effects, a mixture of chemicals, food products, rubber, and mechanical parts turned by his large team into an alien capable of taking on any form.
The Thing was released in 1982 to very negative reviews. It was described as "instant junk", "a wretched excess", and proposed as the most-hated film of all time by film magazine Cinefantastique. Reviews both praised the special effects achievements and criticized their visual repulsiveness, while others found the characterization poorly realised. The film earned $19.6 million during its theatrical run. Many reasons have been cited for its failure to impress audiences: competition from films such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which offered an optimistic take on alien visitation; a summer that had been filled with successful science fiction and fantasy films; and an audience living through a recession, diametrically opposed to The Thing's nihilistic tone.

John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, and Keith David (Childs) have all said that "YES, Childs was infected at the end". There's the lame excuse of "lost in the storm" but the subtle hint is that his breath doesn't show in the cold like Kurt's (MacReady) does. Plus, there's a graphic novel that picks up after the movie that has Childs as the infected person too. The Thing wasn't dead at the end...part of it was Childs.

Maybe Blair is trying to contain it.... But if he WAS infected- destroying the radio prevents anyone from warning any possible rescue team to stay away and not approach the base. Eventually "someone" will come, but if our heroes got a message out, the base could be quarantined permanently.
But just as importantly- Blair's rampage creates a distraction to allow another "Thing" to destroy the blood bags; Palmer is not present during the radio room destruction. How did he get the key? Windows dropped them in a panic when he witnessed Bennings' mid-transformation. This is also why Windows freaked out and ran for the shotgun as the group would figure out he was the last one with the keys and would suspect him.

It's actually based on a novella by John W Campbell (Who Goes There".
And props to Jeb. The reason that dog seemed so "off' was because it's a half Malamute-HALF WOLF. From what I understand, the actor that played the dog handler had to train with the dog from a couple of months just so he could read the dog cues and so the dog would feel comfortable walking along side him without tearing his face off by accident. They had to lock down the set whenever that dog was filming so it wouldn't get spooked and injure someone.
Was it worth it having a wild animal on set? Well, that scene where the dog materialize out of a shadow and walks down the hall is the creepiest thing I've ever seen in a movie.

The point of the movie is that the biggest scare isn't the monster itself, but that it could be any one of us, and we don't know who: Paranoia & Suspicion. When it absorbs someone, it assimilates their personality, memories, and intelligence. So, when it has a person, it's at least as smart as them, if not smarter, so the Thing was able to figure out their plans--which is why it stole the detonator, sabotaged the blood bank, and tore off the nametag. As it assimilates you, it gains your way of thinking, and understanding of your physiology. Which is why it was able to fake Copper's heart attack (and was foreshadowed by him having a weak heart). Supposedly, it can become even smarter by absorbing multiple organisms, which led to it building that ship. On the flip side, when it's small as a dish of blood, it can only act on basic survival instinct--moving away from the hot wire.

The Thing is an absolute masterpiece. The story, acting, suspense, the pacing, lighting, camera compositions, writing, music and the special effects are perfect! And a special shoutout to the dog. Best animal actor I've ever seen!
This is also one of 3 movies of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy. If Macready or Childs are infected and a rescue team arrives in a couple of days it's the end of the world. Very bleak movie.

They actually made a Prequel (which is also called "THE THING") to this Movie back in 2011.
It also takes place back in 1982 and 3 days before the events of the John Carpenter Movie and it is the story of what happened to the Norwegian Base (the base where the Dog-Thing came from). The Prequel stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton.
Now I myself actually like the Prequel although it is not anywhere even close to being as good as the John Carpenter Movie. It also unfortunately has got a lot of really bad CGI in it (the reason why is because they actually originally did do Practical Effects when they made the Prequel however, really really late into Post-Production of the Prequel, the Studio for some reason stepped in and at the last minute had almost all of the Practical Effects in the Prequel get covered over with the CGI. The fact that it was done so late into Post-Production is 1 of the main reasons why I think the CGI looks so bad). However, If that sort of thing (really bad CGI) is not something that bothers you then you should check it out.
Again, The Prequel is not anywhere even close to being as good as the John Carpenter Movie (far from it in fact) but I myself still like it.

    - The idea of people not seeing Childs' breath in the end has been more or less debunked elsewhere, but there is a key piece of information that pretty definitively clears Childs. When the alien copies you it grows a new copy of you from infected tissue and tears out of your body and clothes, because of this, any jewelry on non-organics in your body wouldn't be part of the copy of you. In the last scene, Childs turns his head for a moment and gives the camera a full and lingering shot showing that he's still wearing his earring, which The Thing wouldn't have had. That said, when McCready gives the bottle over to Childs, the ominous music starts as soon as he starts taking a drink, and McCready laughs. This could show that McCready is The Thing, and that he's laughing because Childs just infected himself through saliva when he drank out of the bottle.
Great film, and great reaction ! Have seen a lot of reactions to this movie, and this is probably one of my favorites so far !

The computer screen actually read that the entire planet would be taken over in 27,000 from first contact. That's just over 3 years for Earth to be completely replaced by the Thing, all animals, humans, anything that could move. I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old in the theater. It changed my life and now I'm completely normal...hahahaha! No, really...this movie started my love of horror. I'm happy to see that people are getting to see it for the first time, even if you have a weak stomach. 👍. Glad you've been assimilated into the Thing family.

Good review, I watched this when I was 5 and yeah it scared the crap out of me. Funny thing is by the time the 90s came and the "making of" came out I knew how all the practical effects were done but now seeing younger people raised on CGI ,they can't fathom how these effects were done in camera, making tho whole experience fresh again. Just seems so odd that a generation raised on CGI can react more grossed out (like in 82) than to anything CGI can produce. And that my young friends is the magic of practical in camera effects. :)
