Halloween (1978) Movie Description:
On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith's Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.
Halloween is a 1978 American independent slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The plot centers around a mental patient Michael Myers who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his babysitting teenage sister on Halloween night when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he stalks a female babysitter and her friends, while under pursuit by his psychiatrist.
Filming took place in Southern California in May 1978, before premiering in October, where it grossed $70 million, becoming one of the most profitable independent films of all time. Primarily praised for Carpenter's direction and score, many critics credit the film as the first in a long line of slasher films inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974).
Halloween spawned a film franchise comprising eleven films which helped construct an extensive backstory for its antagonist Michael Myers, sometimes narratively diverging entirely from previous installments. A direct sequel of the film was released in 1981. A remake was released in 2007, which was followed by a sequel in 2009. An eleventh installment, which serves as a direct sequel to the original film that retcons all previous sequels, was released in 2018; this was followed by two direct sequels: Halloween Kills (2021) and the upcoming Halloween Ends (2022). Additionally, a novelization, a video game and comic book series have been based on the film. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Now we know what Michael was doing all those years in the asylum: working on his fresh dance moves! 🤣🕺
😂😂😂😂
Lol right
And driving
Be my dad
Actually, he was releasing songs with Freddy Kreuger, Jason Vorhees, Leatherface, and Ghostface
This was the ultimate low budget innovator. Their use of the steadicam was like the second ever instance of it, and John Carpenter's score is legend. Michael's Mask and his blank emotionless demeanor gets under your skin and for me it makes him and it the greatest slasher of all time
Greatest slasher of all time: Jason Voorhees > Michael Myers.
They made the movie for 300k. That steady cam cost 70k of that budget, and the studio insisted they buy it. Also, Friday the 13th was literally made to rip off Halloween.
@@DiegoA-jh5zu Sorry but Michael Myers is the true slasher of all time now
@@DiegoA-jh5zu No
Michael is by far my favourite. This is my favourite movie and Halloween 4 and 2 come in my top 20 movies, which for me make an amazing trilogy when i get a free 4 and a half hours lol, especially on Halloween.
That intro cracked me up, best content creator.
And why the hell is Michael in fuckin arkham asylum
He just wanted to visit his old pal Joker.
@@fun_police8011 Michael has friends???
@@fun_police8011 “from the movie Joker!”
Because Michael Was In A Mental Ward...
@@HelloMellowXVI Michael in the Batman universe would be cool though. I would like to see Batman go up against Mikey.
'small grave' was where the tombstone was removed and 'The Thing' John Carpenter did is a remake of an old classic they are watching on the TV.
Of which Carpenter's movie didn't come out until 4 years after Halloween, so it's crazy how it wasn't even made yet and it's still more recognizable than the first adaptation
A and the original the thing was more Horror then the remake perhaps because its black and white.
Ok he killed it with that intro the was hilarious 😂
Sick remix too
When it hits December, you gotta watch Black Christmas (1974). While Halloween is arguably the most famous slasher horror, that movie solidified many tropes associated with the genre. Pretty ahead of the time with its characters too.
Dude, Black Christmas low-key creeped me the hell out; when dude was looking at the girl through the crack in the door and all you could see was his eye bothered me for days. Very rare that movies get me like that, but...yeah.
Fun fact: John Carpenter had asked the director of "Black Christmas" what would he do if he made a sequel and he told him he would set it on Halloween. So that's what Carpenter did.
I hope he does such a great movie
I like how you put the year to show it came first but a video I watched recently show tht theses tropes go as far back as the 60s which is amazing to me I haven’t watched black Christmas yet but now I’ll definitely check it out
If you ask me, Black Christmas is even scarier, creepier and with a higher dead body count.
John Carpenter's Musical scores are the BEST :)
My favorite has to be the theme from Escape from New York...
@@williammccullough2466 NICE! :)
I also like the score from Raiders of the Lost ark.
he's got a Trilogy of albums out of original music titled Lost Themes Vol 1,2 and 3. they're fantastic albums, just wonderful stuff
@@thedeepfriar745 really? I gotta check those out, bro :) THX
The version of The Thing that Tommy and Laurie are watching on television is the original 1951 version of The Thing From Another World, directed by Christian Nyby and produced by Howard Hawks. Carpenter was a fan of Howard Hawks and The Thing, which is why he used it in Halloween and eventually made his own remake of The Thing in 1982.
Ikr? The remake was made in 82, and this is 78. Do the math, people.
@@fynnthefox9078 Think he just thought it was pre-marketing for it since they used the same title sequence.
Young'uns today have a hard time understanding how differently the world worked before the days of corporate hegemony and instant communication.
Halloween has (arguably) the most iconic theme, but one of my all time favorites belongs to Hellraiser. The music playing when Frank is being resurrected is just haunting.
Yesss
"we'll tear your soul apart!"
I love halloween and friday the 13th
And the first one is really cool aswell
"The Thing," which appears on a tv during this movie, is not a hint that Carpenter was making the Thing at the time. The title card is from the original 1951 "The Thing From Another World!" Carpenter would go on to work on a remake of this movie, which _had_ been being shopped around at the time, but was originally being worked on by a different director. Carpenter deliberately tried to make his title card very similar to the original's, so it is understandable why you might mistake the two. John Carpenter has said that he was originally skeptical about making a remake of "The Thing From Another World!" because he didn't feel he could top the original, an indication that he was very fond of the movie which was probably why this cameo appears in Halloween. However, he was convinced to make it after someone asked him to consider reading the original story that the film was based on, which was very different from the movie. Carpenter's "The Thing" hews much closer to the original story as a result (though is still not an exact adaption).
It's okay, they literally pick up right where they left off in Halloween: Part 2. Literally takes place on the same night.
Although I'd say canonically it doesn't matter anymore since the new Universal movies are considered canon now
But hey, you know... good idea to continue it
@@kaylons
Yeah, but Halloween 2 is better.
@@Laxhoop The 2018 film wasn't too bad and I'm looking to see the new one soon
@@kaylons I've got a cam version on my channel. Had the HD Peacock one but NBCUniv are a bunch of bee-otchs..

That intro killed me! 😂
Love when you react to a pure classic.
Micheal was feeling himself in that intro I can dig it 🔥🔥🔥
I wish I could watch this again for the first time. What a classic. Ending isn’t really abrupt though. Intention is to show that Michael is the boogeyman. Shows all of the locations he’s been throughout the film ending with his house as his breathing gets louder and louder. He’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It’s a great ending and was intended to be the only film in the series since they never thought there would be a sequel.
That's what I've always thought of Michael, honestly. He's evil incarnate, the boogeyman of Haddonfield. That's why he disappears and can take a beating.
Although I enjoy Halloween 2 and 4. They shouldn't have forced john carpenter to make more. It could have been a one movie classic like
"The thing" "the fog" " prince of darkness " ect...
Evil never dies is the point. Michael is definitely not human, at least not any longer.
12:27 The film being shown there is the 1951 film "Thing From Another World". John Carpenter's The Thing is a remake of that movie.
Both films are adaptations of a novel from the 1930s.
Michael's mask is an actual William Shatner/Captain Kirk mask that was altered. If you Google it you can compare the unaltered mask with this "improved" version. This movie was very creepy to see in a big old dark theater at night when it was new, on a proper big screen, with everyone screaming at all the right times.
4:00 -- Notice the palm trees in the background of what is supposed to be Illinois. Carpenter couldn't film in autumn so all the dead leaves were placed there for each scene and then swept up for the next one.
12:30 -- They're watching the original "The Thing" from the 50s, not the Carpenter version. He used the same title graphics.
This intro is to funny, woke my newborn up I was laughing so hard. Worth it!
Of all the countless times I've seen this movie, including as a kid at the theater when it came out, I can't believe I never noticed the scenes of Michael Myers dancing.😁
Lmao love the intro 😂 sweet moves man 😂😂
Loomis's Monologue about Michael is one of the greatest moments in cinema history. Just flawless execution from the acting to the music.
I agree. That and Quint in Jaws about the USS Indianapolis are my favourite 2.
Wow, you must really be going places! You got William Shatner to do your intro! :D
One of the best intros😂Haven't laughed that hard in awhile.
Who’s here off of the thumbnail live?!
You the man Mell! 🙋🏼♀️🙌🏻😎
RIP Donald Pleasence. No matter how many remakes are made, he will always be the greatest Dr. Samuel Loomis.
Agreed
This movie is a CLASSIC. It's the movie that made me fall in love with horror... and started a lifelong obsession with Jamie Lee Curtis. Not the first slasher, but it codified SO MUCH. And honestly, in Laurie's defense at the end, she just found her friends murdered and took a fall down the stairs that probably gave her a concussion. I don't think she was thinking clearly. But fast forward to Halloween 2018... she's ready then...
Fun fact: Michael Myers, as an adult, was played by at least four different people in this movie alone. Tommy Lee Wallace, supposedly John Carpenter, Nick Castle was the main one, and the unmasked one was Tony Moran.
Not to mention two more as a kid as Debra was the kids arm grabbing the knife at the start.
I would suggest you watch the Netflix show 'The Movies That Made Us' episode about Halloween, has some great behind the scenes insight on the movie. And if you plan on watching anymore Halloween movies just go straight to Halloween(2018) because that is a direct sequel to this and is really good as well. Everything else is hit or miss with an emphasis on the miss.
Love the reactions and am looking forward to the next. Keep having fun, makes these even more enjoyable to watch.
Yeah, though I LOVE the Halloween franchise, I admit, it's a damn mess.
Halloween 2 is good imo.
Haha! Your intro of 'Michael' twerking in the bushes killed me! Haha! 😆 You're too funny -x-
Lmao that intro, hold up Mel lemme get my dollar bills ready 😂
At the end when Loomis (Donald Pleasance) looks down and sees that Micheal is gone, prior to shooting the scene, John Carpenter asked Pleasance to look either like "I knew he would be gone." or "How is he not dead?" After they shot the scene, Carpenter loved it and asked him what expression he decided to go with, and Pleasance basically didn't tell him, leaving it open to interpretation.
Michael Myers is my favorite slasher because he's the most realistic and scariest one there is. I'd probably rank Ghostface in second.
Obviously this is just my opinion, but i agree Michael is the best.
Well, he's not too realistic. No one can survive 6 shots to the chest or take a knitting needle to the neck.
Leatherface was loosely based on Ed Gein. How's that for realistic?

Bro- that intro > IS THE MOST HILARIOUSLY ORIGINAL OF EVERY MOVIE REACTION CHANNEL!
Great video, Mellow! Midsommar and Halloween; back to back!? I just found your channel a week ago and there's always something good to watch when I'm in the mood for a reaction. Keep on, dude!
13:02. Man, that shot of Michael!
Your comments are friggin hilarious! The Halloween Theme is by far the best slasher film theme. Keep up the awesome work.
Brooo this is definitely in the top 10 of introductions to a video ever!!!! I'm crying 😭😭😭😭💀💀💀💀💀
Mello, your intro got me laughing so hard! Thanks for this great reaction to this classic. Have a good one
Love the introduction! Very much enjoying watching you dive into some classic horror movies. I've been into movies as a hobby since I was like 13 and I have to say horror is the best genre. So underestimated. Everything from the music, acting, cinematography, the dialogue, the colors, the practical effects, its all so good. I love the great classics and I love the cheesy "awful" movies because they usually have some of the most creative and unusual things you will ever see. I just went to my first horror festival this year and I've never had more fun.
Bro I couldn’t have put it better myself!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥 Horror is the BEST genre like fr!! Nothing gets me more excited more than the horror genre.
When Linda and Bob are smashing and the phone rings, my theory is that it was Paul calling to ask Annie why she hadn’t picked him up, if they had answered maybe they could’ve been on alert
Hi Mellow! I think John Carpenter did a great score for Halloween. John Carpenter also made Big Trouble in Little China, and composed the soundtrack. 😁😁😁😁
I just noticed the clip from Goodburger in your intro and I am dying!! That choice was perfect lmao 🤣🤣
Lol literally amazing intro I can’t stop jamming with you
Donald Pleasence was a fantastic actor. Nobody could have delivered that kind of performance the way he did. His dialogue remains iconic to this day nearly 50 years later. His passing was a huge loss to the industry.
I tuned in at several times during yesterday's FOUR hour live stream.
I hopped in, in the middle of you making the thumbnail.
I had NO clue it took that much work just for the pic. The talent and creativity are so prevalent. Thank you sir, for all the free fun.
I might have to jump in on patreon... knowing what I know now.
And thank you for addressing my comment on you inserting yourself into the films. Also didn't realize how tedious THAT is to make happen.
Keep on Keepin on. 🤘🏻📽

I've been subbed and following you with much love for a while now, but at this point I'm just really curious how you have missed all these movies, and at the same time jealous that you get to experience your first time viewing them at an age where you can snack em up without missing all too much.
Love ya stuff Mell! Keep em coming! Hoping that Children of men pops by some day!

That intro cracked me up! You, dare I say, killed it?
Dude, I saw this film a week before my birthday in October 2000, my parents and I left town on Friday and came back on Sunday. We left for my sister's ROTC training. We were staying in our hotel in Flagstaff. My sister and I watched this, and it scared the hell out of me! But I enjoyed it very much.

That intro tho. 😆 I see why you put him everywhere, because he really is everywhere. 😅
gotta say the intro sold the whole vid for me something about a dancing micheal does it for me.
really nice reaction to a classic slasher movie. This movie was so good it didn't need a lot of kills off the back

This is one of the fundamental Halloween films and an absolute classic! A CLASSIC score as well! 🎃 🔪
Halloween hands down best one of all the Slasher films, especially Halloween 2 intro and music is top tier. I can't wait til Melverse reacts to Halloween 2.
Intro was epic man haha
The role of Dr. Loomis was first offered to genre veteran Peter Cushing. When he turned it down, it was offered to his counterpart Christopher Lee, who later said refusing the role was one of his biggest professional regrets.
Really? Wow. I wonder what Loomis would've been like with Christopher Lee playing that character
Haha 🤣🤣🤣🤣 loving your intro
I think that was your best intro yet... HAHAHAHA
You crack me up with these intros😭😭😭
Dude the intro was hilarious 😂
John Carpenter’s Thing is a semi-remake of The Thing From Another World (1951) which I highly recommend! Great classic atmospheric scares!
