I feel the same way. I have thought about him so many times throughout the years, with such sadness. All his characters were great, but “unfrozen caveman lawyer” just absolutely got me! 😂
He was great; well the magazine did have a Sassiest Boy contest; it had me wonder if the staff go around in private life talking about who is sassy or not.
I had a gay boss back when this was new and whenever I'd object to having to do mindless duties, he would say, "SASSY!" That guy could make me laugh so hard with little things like that.
For a long time following the loss of Phil Hartman I couldn't bear to watch anything he had been involved in. At the time that his career was really skyrocketing I was going through some seriously rough times, but I could always manage to laugh at myself and my situation and the world around me when viewing anything he was a part of. In some way it was like losing a beloved favorite uncle in a sudden tragic senseless event. It took a long, long while before I came to realize that the only tribute I could possibly offer to his memory was to revisit and embrace the gifts he gave us all. I have a special place in my soul for this guy and his zany and genius talent. Miss you, Mr. H, and thanks for seeing me through those bad times.

Like I was surprised and amazed by the whole 'PeeWee's Playhouse' world (I hadn't expected to like it AT ALL) and quickly encouraged my 2 young kids to watch and they loved it, and we have many fond memories of us 3 scarfing down cereal on weekend mornings and making a proper disaster of the coffee table from us cracking up. It wasn't until way later that I discovered how instrumental Phil Hartman was to the whole insane concept and writing. Just another facet of his comedic brilliance.

Hartman shows you how good he was within the first 5 seconds. Instead of taking the applause break as the SNL audience, he works it in with the sketch with a quick “thank you” to play it off as a studio audience for the Sassy show.

For 30 years I’ve had the line “I feel like I’m in the middle of a Sassy Sandwich!” stuck in my head. That was Phil Hartman as Sassy magazine editor Russell Clark, from the first time they did this sketch. It featured David Spade as Christian Slater (which is probably why they brought this back when Slater hosted), Adam Sandler as Marky Mark (Wahlberg) and Luke Perry (host) as Rick (formerly Ricky) Schroeder (who says that he’s not Sassy, just “Sass”). For some reason, I’ve never been able to find it online, although there is a transcript out there.
I remember when this sketch came out. I always thought the word Sassy was annoying and this sketch basically summed up my feelings how stupid the word was. I was rolling over in laughter the first few times I saw it.
There's an even funnier one with Adam Sandler as Marky Mark. I actually never knew they made more than one of these "Sassy" skits until I saw this one.
One time when I was in prison we were all in this Rehabilitation class and this dude was like giving a speech or something and then when he got done one of the guys sitting next to me said. "Sassy" i freakin lost it😂😂😂😂
morbidchid it was good in the 70s, then Eddie carried the show during the dark times where you either had unfunny people, or famous or soon to be famous people who were wasted on the show. then you had that killer late 80s, early 90s cast(Hartman, Carvey, Lovitz, Dunn, Miller, Hooks, Jackson, Nealon). Then you had that bad boy era with Sandler, Farley, Myers, Schneider, MacDonald, Spade, Rock, Sweeney, Hutsell and Meadows. Then the dark ages once again with Norm MacDonald being a saving grace. Then the late 90s cast till 2013 were all great and talented. Since 2013 it’s been garbage.

If they were still doing the same show then everyone would be complaining about that, and saying that SNL is boring and hasn't changed in years, and things like that. It is what it is, but I agree with you, for the most part SNL these days has a great cold open and a fairly amusing Weekend Update segment. Sadly, everything else is usually rather forgettable

The writing just got worse, and the performers became interchangable lame-o's (aside from a few occasional standouts). I mean, you're never going to get the likes of Carvey, Hartman, Miller, Meyers, Spade, Lovitz, Nealon, McDonald, Sandler, Farley, and Schneider (among others) in the span of a few years on there ever again. I'd say it really peaked in the mid-90's. Then yelling and bizarre unfunny stuff (or repetitive things with no point like What's Up With That) became more common. The show has a couple clever ideas and some okay Update jokes, but is mostly a waste of time (the filler characters appearing on Update are terrible). Ironically, the best bits are the shorts or pre-taped songs (Boomers Got the Vax is a recent highlight). It's an institution and one of the last bastions of sketch comedy, but it's probably time to retire it.

I'm so glad this finally popped up in my feed, I haven't seen this in 20 years at least but it's just as good as it was back then....I seem to remember another one with Marky Mark....Phil Hartman was a f'n genius and lunatic in these sketches.....i love that he only did these in his final year on the show, this was so far apart from the other stuff he did on the show
Kate McKinnon comes pretty close - they're both the glue that holds their casts together. Reliably funny, rare to break, and putting in 110% effort into every sketch.
I just remembered this sketch randomly. I wasn’t exactly sure who did it but I was pretty damn sure it was Phil Hartman cuz the man was a comic genius which is why all his work was incredible. When I was in law school I used to crack up this girl I dated with the unfrozen caveman lawyer routine. Phil was and is a national treasure.
@@caveman3021 Sassy magazine itself didn't exactly become Jane magazine, as it was bought out, editorial offices moved, and staff transferred to join Teen magazine. But Sassy and Jane had the same founding editor and Jane was meant to appeal to former Sassy readers. (By the way, my sister and I loved Captain Caveman cartoons, especially when he'd yell his name and then something would malfunction or a plan would go haywire.)
Just seeing Phil on screen makes me happy, and sad, he would have continued to have a great career. Also, I forget his name, but the comedian who plays Andrew McCarthy impression was spot on!
Mohr is fantastic in this bit, and a few others iirc. He was very hit or miss, though, and when he bombed (frequently) it was awful. He's better in TV/film than sketch, and not half as good as impressions as he thinks he is.
This is very unusual- and extremely funny! I don't know what to say- he definitely has an extraordinary absorption with something, you might think almost a fantasy world... All in all- the verdict is in- there's nothing better to say, but this is all truly SASSY!!!
Mine too! It was the Halloween episode with Smashing Pumpkins. The Matt Foley sketch, “Sassy!”, Adam Sandler with “I’m crazy pickle arm, I got a pickle for an arm, NOW GIVE ME SOME CANDY!” “Pearl Jam 2” man, this was peak SNL firing on all cylinders
Phil Hartman was hands down the most versatile cast member in SNL history. I have no doubt he could have gone on to be a great serious actor as well.

For the younger kids who don't know, Phil Hartman was the Meryl Streep of SNL. He could play any role.

I watched the "Halston" miniseries. Halston has a personal assistant named "Sassy". If Phil Hartman were alive, he'd star in the miniseries.
