      I love it when you hear people who's professional lives were (and still are) dedicated to English cricket, expressing some real, cold hard truths. I think every England fan will agree with so much of what's being said, and it's all coming from the heart and completely without any external agendas. I just want to know who's decision it was to drop Broad and Anderson from the squad for the upcoming Windies series, and more importantly WHY, because I don't agree with it, exactly as the guys said.

    It's worth looking at that transfer from Harmison and Hoggard to Anderson and Broad. In the memory there was that point on tour to New Zealand, when the bold decision was made to drop our leading bowlers for two youngsters, but it wasn't really like that. Through 2007 and 2008 our best bowlers were none of them, Sidebotham and Panesar were our best performers. Harmison and Hoggard had been averaging in the high thirties in 2007, and got one wicket each in the first New Zealand test, and were dropped, Broad and Anderson got 8 apiece in the next two. Anderson had been in and out of the side for four years, and he was ready to go, outperforming Hoggard, which is why he never played again. Harmison actually played several more times, when fit, without any consistency till 2009.
    The difference now is that Broad and Anderson are still performing, they are not fading, they should not have protected places, but it is up to players to take their place on merit. If Archer and Stone were available then they would have tougher competition. The reality of that squad is the likeliest starting line up for the bowlers is Woakes, Robinson, Wood and Leach. That's not a fresh start, it's the attack we put out at Brisbane.

    As Riicky Ponting rightly says, Joe Root is not a cricket captain at all, let alone an international captain. Unfortunately, I think he may well be be the least able on-field captain England have ever had. If he actually makes a good decision, it is always commented upon because it is so unusual!
    England's batting has been the main issue. The solution? Drop the two best bowlers and retain batters who have rarely made double figures because of their 'potential'. Makes perfect sense. I hope it proves effective. On the other hand, meet the new boss ... same as the old boss!

      Root has next to no leadership qualities. It’s a shame he’s in that spot. I don’t dislike the guy; clearly the best batter England have got but he is NOT leadership material.
      England’s bowling attack is their only positive at this point, but they do need a more stable, confident spinner and Leach was treated rather poorly in the Ashes.
      Leave the bowling alone; their batting order needs a serious shake up and they need to know wtf they’re doing with Stokes

    Strauss saw off possibly England,s best ever batsman in Kevin Pieterson and now he,s given our great fast bowlers in Broad and Anderson the elbow. Key talks rubbish about Anderson and Broad whilst Atherton and Nasser show them deserved respect.

  • @bloomylicious
    @bloomylicious 2 года назад +3

    I can see some logic to Broad and Anderson getting dropped, though I'm not certain it's still the right thing to do. Strauss is temporarily in charge, probably only got this series along with Collingwood and Root. In the past I think the policy of planning selections 6 months to a year down the line was wrong and didn't make sense. But actually now, during this brief period where a reset is happening this does seem like the moment to take a look at the future. I don't think you learn anything new playing Broad and Anderson in the Windies. You know they're both proven talents. You do learn something by asking some of the players that have been in and around squads for the last few years to step up and take charge. If they don't show any signs of being worthwhile then they get discarded for at least the short to medium term back to county cricket. It also gives the incoming new management a chance to see how these players perform to help inform their future plans and selections.

      Yes, don’t want to sound like the profit of doom but it may get worse before it gets better. It’s a long road back from here for the test side. Playing devils advocate, will this ‘red ball re-set’ be at the expense of the white ball game and then in 2032, England announce a ‘white ball re-set’ as they did in 2015. The demise of the test side crept up on the ECB in that time.

    Still England’s best bowlers.
    Also, Archer, Wood and Olly Stone are very injury prone. Wood is also 31. So I don’t see how you can rely on these bowlers as the “future of English cricket”. Though, Wood is at his best he’s ever been.

    Broad and Anderson are the best men for the job, whilst they're still playing well we should use (in a playing sense) them as much as they are able to be used, because whilst there still going strong we need them. I would like to however, pose a question? Is it that they are both difficult to manage? Or, is it an issue with Joe root's insecurities, does he feel that because they are legends, his influence is diminished within the team?!

  • @JoeP1934

    Firstly I just want to say, how good are these vodcasts! Re the selection for the Windies, some of the players left out I completely agree with, buttler can’t bat in test cricket end of and his keeping was pretty poor in the ashes as well, so he had to go, burns has been up and down but is averaging 30 after 30 test matches which isn’t good enough so has to go, Hameed had the worst ashes I think I’ve ever witnessed for a player in my life so had to go after that but is young enough to maybe come back. I think billings should be in and around that test squad as he’s our second best keeper behind foakes and is a natural leader. Play bairstow as a number 5 batsmen and back him there, stop chopping and changing him up and down the order, give stokes a bit of freedom to be a proper all rounder at 6 like when he first came into the side, not trying to drag us back into a game at 20-3 as that’s just not in his DNA. With regards to broad and Anderson I can’t believe they aren’t in this tour squad but I honestly believe Jimmy will go at the end of this English summer anyway, it feels a good time to step away on a high and let the new guys have a go into the tours away from home next winter. Rant over 😅
