Just a tip for anyone who makes a serious boo-boo and going way too ash: lemon juice (3-4 lemons), 1/2 cup conditioner, shower cap, leave on for 1 hour. It saved my life. Hahaha
Side note toner does not lighten itself but the developer will. If you put toner on level 9 hair with 20 volume developer you will see lightening. If your just doing a routine toning and like where you are currently at I recommend hitting it with 5 or 10 volume developer
You would make an awesome instructor in a cosmetology school. The advice you give is very easy to comprehend and many people don't know the concept of the color wheel, so great job there. Plus, your hair journey is very relatable and inspirational. As for me, I'll be toning my light yellow hair w/ Manic Panic Virgin Snow and throwing in a few steel blue peekaboos if I don't chicken out! As always, your videos are much appreciated.
For not actually being a pro, you really explained this well. Showing the color wheel and level chart to give people visual explanation was a solid move. Good job. I am licensed, just don't have much experience with Wella toners. This video was nice to watch. :)
This is SO informative, thank you! You are so knowledgeable and articulate. Really incredible. I've met so many hair dressers who know way less than you do.
Thanks Jess, this is a very useful video for someone who has never used a toner, but accidentally bleached my hair (instead of just colouring it "lightest blonde"). I used a Schwarzkopf lightener, thinking it was a substitute to John Frieda foam (which has been discontinued, because it was an awesome product, I think the hairdressers revolted on John Frieda, since I was able to achieve salon results at home super-easily. That's my theory). So I'm going to use the 10-volume developer suggested by the person working at Mountain Beauty & Esthetic Supply in Hamilton, with the Wella T18, but for 10-15 minutes (instead of half the recommended 30 minutes), because I don't want it to go too grey/silver/purple. But it's pretty yellow, so probably going closer to 15. We'll see! ~Diana from Hamilton (ON)
Thanks for all your helpful information and advice. I have darkest brown almost black hair, and pull a lot of yellow as a result of bleaching to a level 9 in one bleach. I now have ashy platinum hair with no yellow and no patches or dryness and no visible damage. My roots go white straight away so I only need the 10vol to tone now :) thankyou xx
honestly had to look everywhere before someone told me that "toner" isn't a specific product. Thank you for clarifying that a low volume developer with demi permanent colour at the same level as the hair can be used.
I really enjoyed this educational video!!!! U really made me realize that I wasn’t paying attention to the levels n counteracting colors n that’s why I am not happy with my color! But now that I am aware... I believe I can make the right decision thank you
Hi Jess! I would love to see a video on the best eyeshadows (specifically transition shades) for pale skin. No one has done a video talking about transition shades for us pale folk!
I think that propper way is to put NOT hair dye that has corresponding level, but instead of that, to put the one that has one level up. Let's say Annie - hypothetical girl who bleached her hair and lifted it to the level 10, wants to get rid of yellow tone in her bright hair. She should not use pearly-purple toner/hair dye from level 10 - BECAUSE IT'S GONNA MULTIPLY, and the result would be, of course still bright, still silvery, but it would make her hair one level darker - level 9. I am bleaching and dying my hair since I was 17, and I have made that mistake so so many times. It is caused by the fact, that the toner is kind of a tint. The thicker layer of it is, the darker the hair will turn out. ;)
I love your hair color!! I know you went to the salon the last time that you did soft roots, but really really it looks gorgeous. Do you know which color they used? I bleached my hair, but I felt in panic when I saw my yellow -orange hair (or some color really strange like super gold and little orange in it). So, I used a permanent color which was level 7 and it was looks great... but know one month later may hair is again brassy (I don't know the exactly color that I have maybe is a level 8 and I think is again orange-yellow) If I'll want up the level, the only thing is bleach it again? could you give me an advice? your actual color is my dream blonde!!!
Very much appreciate the depth and breadth of your knowledge on this topic. And you're enthusiastic, articulate and genuine! My only request is for a follow up video with visuals of some sort to illustrate the hypothetical examples you give. Otherwise the distinctions and nuances can be difficult to grasp -- at least for me. 😞
I dont usually make comments, but I just wanted to say thank you for making your videos! I went to the salon and got my hair bleached (I naturally have dark brown hair, maybe a 3) and now it's yellowy and my partner HATES my hair, which sucks. Your videos have helped me find what I hope are the right Wella toners to order so I can fix it (so hopefully my partner won't hate it so much and I can have a bit more confidence) I'm actually really excited to try the toners now! so thank you xxxxx you're amazing. and absolutely gorgeous!
I went to the salon yesterday and got babylights. They put a wella toner on my natural hair as well as the recently bleached hair, and because my natural hair is suuuuper easy to lighten, I’m now dealing with brassy roots and bits. It really sucks, my long history with bad hairdressers continues.😭 Now I’m worried because if I use a toner, what was bleached will be basically white, and what wasn’t will be still way too light. Seems like my only option is to give myself shadow roots. So much for pretty wedding hair.😞
Jess your videos are so informative! I discovered you when I was going to DIY and I love that you're not formally trained but have so much knowledge to share with us! x
Apart from your great attitude to camera, I love the quality and edit of this video and the lightning is amazing. just friendly advice, You should keep doing videos with this type of edit and quality. Keep shining.
You are the best! My hair would never look as good if it wasn't for you. Thank you for all your super awsome hair toning videos. What bleach/combo do you use first? My hair is like yours.
You can combine developer with your shampoo to lift the red tones ! No bleach needed. Developer has peroxide in it so it lifts the shade , albeit not as dramatically as bleach would. The higher the level of the developer, the higher the lift. ...not using bleach will save the quality and health of your hair !! Then afterwards if you don't like the results you can still tone it! I recommend wella toner , they sell it at Sally's ! And you'll already have the developer , which you'll need to combine with your toner. Keep in mind using the developer with the toner will lift the shade even more.
Hey there. Although I no longer need to tone my hair (I just do a rinse with warm water and teeny bit of purple shampoo, every time I wash my hair) if you have a stylist that works on Salerm - I HIGHLY recommend toning with their organic color called Biokera Natura (for instance 10.12 is pretty ashy). The hair becomes SMOOTH like baby’s hair after it!!!! Tip: don’t tone after bleaching go to salon a week after, when your scalp is not sensitive. Oh!!! Forgot to mention Biokera doesn’t wash off like your regular toners!!! It’s completely permanent. (Thank me later after you try it)
I'm about a level 5 currently..bleached my hair twice already but the mid section to my tips are a light brassy brown. Can't get rid of it. First time I bleached it with a 30 vol and second a 40vol for 30mins. It barely lightened the brown but the purple shampoo may have helped. What am i doing wrong? Haven't used my t14 because I feel it may be a waste if my hair isn't the blonde I want it. Trying to go platinum. Should I use the t14 to try and tone the brown and then bleach it again? Or can I use the t14 and use a 30 or 40 vol with it. Will that help lift the brown?
hi! i agree that you shouldn't waste your t14 if your hair isn't light blonde yet. also, do not use 30/40 vol with the toner - it won't work. unfortunately the only way to go platinum is to keep bleaching until you are light yellow. Then you can use a toner. but i has to warn you that continuously bleaching your hair is extremely damaging and you could end up with fried, frizzy hair that cannot be repaired. i don't think you're doing anything wrong, assuming you are using the proper measurements of bleaching powder and toner. maybe try a different bleach powder? you can also put a plastic shower cap on your head while the bleach is processing to keep the warmth/moisture in - this helps in the lightening process. but another thing - some peoples' hair just is too stubborn. if you've ever watched thataylaa on youtube, she tried to go platinum for years, but her hair just wouldn't lift and after damaging her hair beyond repair, she had to cut it all off and go back brown. i think if you lighten it again and it's still not yellow after bleaching, then you should give it a break for a while because i;d hate for you to fry your hair and have to cut it off. i hope this helps!!
Wish I knew this before paying 680$ for two visits at the salon (had virgin hair and cutting the hair wasn't even included!!!). Second time I went from there feeling like crying cause they just made a new error trying to correct the first. Now I'm on my own journey slowly turning my hair into a platina blond with purple hints (it's like fuck it, if I can do it then why not). Currently trying to stand the "corrective" copper toner they put in my roots that have turned more orange after time, and even more after my first home bleach. Going to bleach again before canceling out the warmth, let's see how long I will manage to wait:) Watched a lot of your videos now, so good and informative. I rarely comment on videos, and you probably read heaps of similar comments about hair but I just wanna thank you for sharing your aha's and knowledge. It has answered a lot of questions I've had in this scary scary world of hair fuck ups.
Thank you so much for doing this video! I commented on one of your other recent videos asking about your root smudge, I have now bleached my hair and it's gone patchy in a way I didn't expect so I've been really struggling to tone it properly. Now I've just got to wait it out and do some deep conditions before trying to even it out a bit more! And thanks for answering my earlier question on your root smudge! Poppy x
For anyone who is interested, since my hair is patchy the toner I have won't work on it so instead I toned it with manic panic ultra violet. First I put it on the worst bits and then brought it up to the really pale blonde bits. It took me about 30 seconds after putting it on the pale bits to realise that those bits were going green! So now the brassier orange bits are a warm dark blonde and the very light blonde bits are slightly green. No idea why this happened.
Poppy T hey what did you do when your hair turn to lightly green? And kinda brown bc It turn my hair like this too and I don’t know what hair colour do I need to use?
And you can tone if you have a naturally very light blonde color but if its like a 8+ wella toners are supposed to be for those guys (stay away from t18!!). You can tone before and/or after dying with a color as well like if the blonde you colored you hair turned out too warm or too cool you can tone it
Sounds like you are trying to reduce the red tones so go for a blue (not purple) toner, definitely recommend a wella toner like T18,t14 or honestly any but with 050
How often can you use permanent tone on all of your hair? If you're trying to bleach your roots should you just tone your roots after bleaching or tone can you do all of your hair? Just wondering if it's ok to tone all over your hair every 4-6 weeks or if that's too damaging and you should only do roots every time. Or should you use demi-permanent if you know you're going to touch up your roots a lot? And what can you use for moisturizing your hair so it's not dry and brittle?
While matching brands ensures the results will be as they should be, no, it wont be an issue, ive never matched developers fo toners and it comes oit pretty close!!
So, i want to dye my hair blue. My thoughts are: bleaching it first (obviously) and then using a demi perminent color with a 6 volume developer... am i on the right path?
Uhmm, ur on the right path on the bleaching then you U turned. It all depends on how blue you want. Always see the swatches of the dyes on a piece of paper. Choose the blue you want. Follow the blue you want like your dreams. Then you need to bleach it to mostly to lvl10. It would be pale yellow. You need purple shampoo to tone the fck down the yellowness of it then go crazy dyeing it. But be careful. 1st, keep in mind, is that your virgin hair your going to dye or there is a pre existing color in it.
Bottom line... go to a salon and have it professionally done ... don’t play beauty shop at home and then pay hundreds of dollars for a professional to fix your hair because you have to have a color correction.
Hair dressers have purposely ruined my hair to make themselves more money 🥲 honestly can't deal with it. I get my hair cut by them but when it comes to colour i do it all myself
Use a blue based (dont use purple it wont do much) any works, as long as its a permanent one... also most toners are for very light hair to start with like level 9+ so try using wella toners, they are supposed to be for any hair level!! Try T10 with a bit of 050
I've bleached & then toned my hair with T18. I've noticed it washes out within 4 washes (Which means roughly 2-3 weeks for me). I'm using CHI Keratin treatment shampoo & conditioner. What can I do to make it last longer? I've gotten a filter for my shower head, and try to wash it not as often. Wondering if there are other ways!
Have you tried using 10 vol with Wella? I started using it like that about 2 years ago and honestly I prefer it that way I think I get more tone deposit that way. However I do bleach my roots to a very pale pale yellow
Loved your video, and great info that I need at this time. I made a big oopsie, I bleached my hair and now my roots are a level 3/4 and the rest of my hair is a level 9/10. I had previous highlights and those are the lightest. The rest is a bit yellowish/orange. Would a demi permanent help tone it? And if you what color?
T14 might not do anything for your hair because your hair isnt light enough to take it in, it MIGHT work but I suggest lightening it if you want to use those to a pale yello if not bright yellow. Other wise make surr you find a BLUE based toner that is for darker hair so like level 6-8
I've seen images/videos of people correcting their orange hair color to blonde with toner so it does look like there was some lift and correction. So they probably used a 20 developer then?
You can use it on wet hair but it will dilute the effect. Still works but ya know. Also It may come out spotty because your hair may be more or less porous in different parts of you hair so dry is better (porous is bad because that means itll hold more water so less toner will end up there)
I've posed this question on a different video of yours but maybe this will make more sense? Im wondering after bleaching if you should color with a permanent dye then tone with a Demi or just use a Demi? Thanks in advance!
Please add a video helping ppl find a good color for their skin color. I am pale and have white blond hair , naturally. I don't like such light hair, I want a warmer color but what color?
Dang girl where were you 3 days ago?! Sitting here all sad with yellow/ orange roots...... omg I'm too old for fucked up hair smh. Awesome video tho. Maybe you can help... covid hair lol. Outgrown expensive highlights, covid so misted some sun in on roots n it actually looks pretty. Couple weeks later it stared looking brassy so I grabbed a toner from Sally. Always used ion but sadly recommended wella t18. Was nervous and sure enough roots look bleached n not toned. I watched your video so I understand better but how can I fix it??
hey, so you mentioned that you use a demi perm colour to tone hair. how do i know exactly which colour to go for to get the correct tone for the end result? for example if my hair goes brassy/yellow after bleaching, what colour should i use to neutralise that and end up with a light blonde? Thanks!
Fernanda Gohr Make Up thanks! I have talked about it in videos before but this last time I went to a salon. After I did the shadow root, I got them to put babylights on top. They toned with wella colour touch in 10/6 and it's kinda faded now tho 💕
Hi! I recently bleached my dark brown hair at home balayage style. I put a semi permanent truffle blonde dye on it to tone and am super happy with the majority of the colour from earlobe level down. However, where the hair changes from light blonde to my natural brown (where I faded out the bleach) I'm obviously left with a more orangy tone. What would you recommend I do in terms of toning this part of my hair, bearing in mind that I'm happy with the colour from my earlobe down? Please help!
Emily Eastgate probably the easiest thing would be to tone just the orangey mid sections with a darker semi permanent. Orange is usually level 5-7, so get a light brown or dark blonde semi that's the same tone as the truffle blonde, and just apply on the orange connector pieces
Hi Jess, great video once again! You are always my 'go to' when I have hair woes! Just wondering what toner it was you used last? I know that you last toned before you did your roots and it seems to have lasted really well and the colour is stunning! I recently bleached my roots and toned my hair with Directions White Toner and I now have bright white (slightly blue in some places) roots with gray-ish blonde lengths and ends! Nightmare!
Hi! I havn't toned my hair since I did the rooted look, and that was wella color touch in 10/6. BUT that was way too silvery for me, so I just let it fade to what it is now. So the colour I have now isn't really any toner haha. For your situation, you need to strip/fade that old toner. Try washing your hair with head and shoulders like 2x per shower to help it fade. Or if youre impatient you can do a bleach bath (or bleach cocktail, whatever its called)...basically just mixing bleach powder and 20 vol developer as usually but then diluting it with shampoo and lathering it on damp hair for 5-10 minutes...just enough to lift the greyness. Then tone again with a demi permanent colour that is equal to your level - i'm assuming youre pretty light...level 10 maybe like me? only leave it on for like 2-5 minutes. Sounds like your hair is porous and damaged and it soaked up the toner wayyyy too much.
Thank you for getting back to me! Yeah, I am pretty much a level 10 all over although I do currently have some slight peachy tones in little patches as I dyed my hair pastel pink and it's stained my hair! I have tried everything to remove it (even bleaching) and nothing is working! Are there any toners that you would suggest for my level once the current toner is faded? I'm not looking for a white/ platinum blonde really, just a verrrrry light pale blonde (like yours in this video basically! haha). Thank you for your help!
Jenny Hazlewood funny enough I don't have a toner on! Well I did at one point , wella colour touch in 10/6 which was very silver..but honestly it is completely faded out now haha
Just a tip for anyone who makes a serious boo-boo and going way too ash: lemon juice (3-4 lemons), 1/2 cup conditioner, shower cap, leave on for 1 hour. It saved my life. Hahaha
Thank you so much. I made a boo boo, and I rebleached mine. I can't believe it didn't fall out.
I tried that and it really dried my hair out - so prob best to leave it for just 15 mins - it prob would lift the colour by then anyway... :-)
It is for brassy hair?
How I can dye my hair blonde
Uyanga Sukhbaatar you can’t. You have to use a bleaching agent to go lighter. Dye only adds color.
Side note toner does not lighten itself but the developer will. If you put toner on level 9 hair with 20 volume developer you will see lightening. If your just doing a routine toning and like where you are currently at I recommend hitting it with 5 or 10 volume developer

T18 is for yellow hair not orange just an fyi which is why it wouldn’t turn orange hair platinum but it does turn yellow hair platinum
I literally just finished dying my hair to a level 9 all by myself but there are some hues I don't like- your timing is uh-mazing! Thank you!!🌼
For not actually being a pro, you really explained this well. Showing the color wheel and level chart to give people visual explanation was a solid move. Good job. I am licensed, just don't have much experience with Wella toners. This video was nice to watch. :)
Out of the dozens of videos I’ve watched related to this, by far most informative! Thank you!
This is SO informative, thank you! You are so knowledgeable and articulate. Really incredible. I've met so many hair dressers who know way less than you do.

That red looks soo good on you, i need to bleach my teeth or something, red makes me teeth look yellow AF :(
Get a blue based red, it works wonders! 😘
Alexis Beauty depends if what the base color is of the red.
I've found the holy grail of hair videos on RUclips! Great stuff! I'd pay for this information.

Toning doesnt lighten hair, use 20 developer but if you want to be even mroe careful use 10 and youll be fine, no lift just tone

Wella is fine just people often misuse it so they do not get the desired effect

Going to bleach again before canceling out the warmth, let's see how long I will manage to wait:)
Watched a lot of your videos now, so good and informative.
Your hair looks amazing. Do you know by any chance what toner that salon used, when they toned your hair?
Looks to be a T10 and T14 combo
Thank you for this highly informative video. I now understand what a toner is and how it works. Love your hair!
So is toner demi perm colour? What product is toner
Toner isnt really like a color, i guess it is? But the product is literally just toner, just like bleach or developer, different brands
This was super useful to watch, thanks!
I don't understand, do you use a toner based on your original color or the dye color ?
Use the toner based on the level of your hair after you bleach it. Most toners are for 9+ level hair after bleaching
And you can tone if you have a naturally very light blonde color but if its like a 8+ wella toners are supposed to be for those guys (stay away from t18!!). You can tone before and/or after dying with a color as well like if the blonde you colored you hair turned out too warm or too cool you can tone it
Thank you for the needed information, I am trying it this weekend. Blessings!
My natural hair color was dark brown and I just got my hair dyed ash blonde but it looks brown/orange/reddish. What toner should I use?
Sounds like you are trying to reduce the red tones so go for a blue (not purple) toner, definitely recommend a wella toner like T18,t14 or honestly any but with 050
Very informative, thank you!
How damaging and high volume are the Shades EQ toners?
Are they a tiny bit less damaging than 20 volume Wella’s ????
How often can you use permanent tone on all of your hair? If you're trying to bleach your roots should you just tone your roots after bleaching or tone can you do all of your hair? Just wondering if it's ok to tone all over your hair every 4-6 weeks or if that's too damaging and you should only do roots every time. Or should you use demi-permanent if you know you're going to touch up your roots a lot? And what can you use for moisturizing your hair so it's not dry and brittle?
Absolutely 💯 love your videos so extremely helpful tytyty
Ok I didn’t know I needed to add developer to toner if I use ion developer with wella toner will it work?
While matching brands ensures the results will be as they should be, no, it wont be an issue, ive never matched developers fo toners and it comes oit pretty close!!
Yes, that’s what I do!
Level 12 people where you at 😂
Bottom line... go to a salon and have it professionally done ... don’t play beauty shop at home and then pay hundreds of dollars for a professional to fix your hair because you have to have a color correction.
Hair dressers have purposely ruined my hair to make themselves more money 🥲 honestly can't deal with it. I get my hair cut by them but when it comes to colour i do it all myself
Thanks, girlie! That helped. You look fabulous and are easy to listen to.
Hi, i have bleached my hair and now my hair is red/orange in the sun which toners should i use please?
But I'm a red head. Where tf do I fall on the scale? I've been searching for hours and it's so frustrating lol
Try green
Have you tried using 10 vol with Wella? I started using it like that about 2 years ago and honestly I prefer it that way I think I get more tone deposit that way. However I do bleach my roots to a very pale pale yellow
which toner do you have on your hair in this video? I love the color...
a salon did this colour here so I can't say for sure!
What about T14 toner to make silver or gray highlights. My hair is reddish brown?
T14 might not do anything for your hair because your hair isnt light enough to take it in, it MIGHT work but I suggest lightening it if you want to use those to a pale yello if not bright yellow. Other wise make surr you find a BLUE based toner that is for darker hair so like level 6-8
Love love love. I've been binge watching your hair videos. Your hair and makeup look amazing today. Also info was great. Thank you!
Can you mix 2 toners together? Btw, your hair is beautiful! ♡
Sharna L yes
Yes you can just make surr your ratios are still even
Just use blue or purple shampoo! ^^
Always love your hair!!
Adernn Nider thank you 😘
I've seen images/videos of people correcting their orange hair color to blonde with toner so it does look like there was some lift and correction. So they probably used a 20 developer then?
If they started out with 9+ hair, then yes most probably if not 30 volume but darker hair 30 for sure
Yellow blond hair look good
thank you so much! i needed this clarified for me. and its so helpful. im going to watch your other videos as well!
Do i use toner on dry hair or can i put it on wet hair after i bleach it?
You can use it on wet hair but it will dilute the effect. Still works but ya know. Also It may come out spotty because your hair may be more or less porous in different parts of you hair so dry is better (porous is bad because that means itll hold more water so less toner will end up there)
I've posed this question on a different video of yours but maybe this will make more sense? Im wondering after bleaching if you should color with a permanent dye then tone with a Demi or just use a Demi? Thanks in advance!
Just discovered yuh our channel! You are great! So informative, clear and articulate. Will keep watching even if it's an old video! : )
Awesome!
You’re a great teacher! That’s for helping!
Dumb question, but can you use Wella toner over box dye or only bleach?
So much detail! Thank you so so much !
Do you like ion toner ? For white blonde highlights and dark blonde
Super helpful information.... Thank you!!
I am LIVING for your lipstick! Thank you for your videos! You have taught me sooooo much!!! Xo
Super informative. Thank you for making this
Please add a video helping ppl find a good color for their skin color.
Thanks!
you are so helpful and adorable. so glad you exist
I loved your hair! What you did on it? Can you make a video about it? Thank youuu
Fernanda Gohr Make Up thanks! I have talked about it in videos before but this last time I went to a salon. After I did the shadow root, I got them to put babylights on top. They toned with wella colour touch in 10/6 and it's kinda faded now tho 💕
you really know your stuff.
I bleaching my hair with 30 developer My roots are dark brown and want to go a blond kind of like yours should I tone with t28 or t18
Make sure you hair is like an 8-9 before you tone it (levels) and then it looks like if you use wella T10 with T14 youll get similar hair to hers!!
Lilyhammmer i would go with wella t11, but just for 5 ish minutes. :)
What toner have you used on ur hair in this video? Loving the colour. X
Jenny Hazlewood funny enough I don't have a toner on! Well I did at one point , wella colour touch in 10/6 which was very silver..but honestly it is completely faded out now haha
What did you use on your hair here?
