Gurl!!! I have been in beauty school for the last year and you have taught me more about this topic than I have ever been taught in school! Thank you so much for enlightening me! Wishing you all the best!
If you went to beauty school and I am certified as well.. you would know Sally’s products are bad for you. When you have your license there hair supply stores just for people with license and not to the public that have actual good dye , bleaches , and other products. Sally’s bleached literally made my hair smoke almost on fire and burned it on.

Good video. Im 61, and color my roots dark blonde every 3 and a half weeks. I never run the color through the hair, only the roots. Sally permanent color makes my hair incredibly shiny.
Phew! That was A LOT! THANK YOU!!! I felt so unsure lightening my hair but now I feel much better about it. Thank you for taking your time to explain all of that to us!
Hi I have a question. I wanna dye my hair like a dark brown/medium brown color but I have black with highlights. I Want it ti be one day color how would I do it
This was SO helpful for learning the terms to use and the products to look for. I'm a bare beginner having a midlife crisis (hair color heals the soul, amirite?), and I want to avoid frying my hair with impulsive dye moves. This information will really help.
Yes, there is a ton of education that stylists undergo and they will know why the results end up the way they do, and will give you a better chance for the results you want. The reason I color at home is not just cost, though. I color at home because, with the exception of my favorite stylist, if the stylist disagrees with what I want, they will browbeat me into getting what they think will look better. I have ended up with getting 4 inches cut off when I asked for a trim, or highlights when I asked for an all over bleach, or red tones when I specifically asked for cool or neutral tones, because they thought it would look better. I really appreciate you putting out this information for those of us who feel the need to do this at home!
You are a real one for this. ❤️ That was super informative. Yes, you *should* go to a professional if you are able, but that's a luxury that isn't accessible to everyone. Maybe this is a chronically online take, but it seems classist to shame someone for for doing their own hair, and I think a lot of stylists need to be more understanding. Same with shaming people who aren't using salon grade products. If you're spending $60 on your hair every 4-6 weeks and $40 on your shampoo and conditioner, that adds up. Anyway, that's my soapbox rant. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
i randomly thought of dying my hair black today and decided to google tips and came across this video and this video was so helpful. i have naturally darker brown hair and so i took some notes lol. i came to decide i’ll first get semi permanent to see how i’ll like it and then later go to permanent or demi permanent if i do like it :)

Wow! Thank you, thank you THANK YOU!!!! If I could hug you through the screen, I would! So informative! You answered SO many of my questions that came to mind when watching others' videos but they never quite answered. (God bless them. No hate!) As a newbie at-home colorer, (we can thank the economy for this) I don't know much so I do what I do best: RESEARCH. I know enough to proceed with GREAT caution and that being as well informed as possible is key. Unless you're willing to cut it all off if it doesn't work, you don't want to risk your hair over it. I've sported a cute, pixie cut with sassy 1" bangs for almost 35 years. It looks GREAT on me - but it was time: I've been growing it out for 2 years now (with frequent trims) and now it's almost to my shoulder. I'm 53. Gray hairs are definitely an issue - but I DON'T want flat, dull, all one color box dye-colored hair. Obviously, No matter what I do at home, it won't look like I have professional, tri-colored, foiled hair. I understand (and TOTALLY believe) that the SAFEST way to color your hair is in the hands of a professional stylist. But I JUST can't afford it anymore. So, thank you for a.) explaining things [basic stuff - I know theres a WHOLE lot more to it] clearly, b.) speaking to your audience like we're smart. It IS chemistry...that one preforms on on top of her head! Any woman, 15 or 50 needs to be careful! But with proper instruction and care from research, we DON'T have to LOOK as broke as we are! (lol!)
You did a wonderful job with just enough detail and anyone who pays attention and listens to this is now more informed. I really love this video. These are things I learned in school and wish everyone could know before they go mess with their hair and chemicals on them. No judgement, simply best to do a little research and you just made that a little more accessible 😊❤
@ I both dye and get my haircut every other Thursday since my hair grows relatively fast. Each time I dye it, the roots will usually stay colored until about 3-4 days before my next cut/coloring and at that point I just supplement with a spray on dye if it gets bad enough. Sometimes if I got really good coverage I might not have to use spray color for the whole 2 weeks I had it dyed or it might not be noticeable enough to use spray dye. I’m naturally extremely blonde, almost bleach blonde so dying my hair brown is the only way I can have any definition to my face and head without looking like I haven’t hit puberty.
@@AllanEvansOfficial Woah that is a lot of maintenance! You are a very organised person for sticking to that lol. I find it hard enough to do it once every five weeks.

This was the most informative video on hair color I’ve ever seen! I don’t have a ton of gray, just 10 or less around the top… should I still use a 20 volume ?
Great info! How about, if I want to tone down a ginger highlight color? A semipermanent color is what I should use? FYI: for the ginger highlight a 10 developer was use and then the color was applied.
This was an AMAZING video. So much great information! That being said, I have a question. (Maybe you have another video addressing this…let me know if that’s the case!). I have salt & pepper hair, and want to balayage my own hair with pure white. Is there a way to do this without getting yellow? I’ve been using esalon to do this with full color and then highlights, but I’ve let my natural color grow in (the salt & pepper), and would love the accentuate the white. What products would you suggest?
You're an angel❤. Thank you so much for this video. In-depth question , my hair is currently super red, semi permanent. It's way too much upkeep. I want to go back to my level 6 hair, however, my ends are way more porous and my roots are healthy and vibrant. What colors should I use to make it even? Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
If I have always had blonde hair but went dark, but now I want to be light brown should I do color remover first or just dye it permanent with developer?
Love you thanks for this. Unfortunately with cost going up in salons I just can't keep up anymore. I went from blonde to level 2 using a filler before hand. This is the brand I use and it seams to really last. One thing I am unsure of should I be washing with cool water in order to keep color in tack for longer?
Yes, hot water will open up the cuticle, making the color fade quicker. So, the cooler the water, the better! It'll also make your hair nice and shiny :)
I have very thin, fine and almost balding hair (have stage 4 cancer but in remission). I recently used a boxed hair color in the color light brown but my hair looks reddish and the color seems to have faded the same day. What did I do wrong? I want to use a permanent light or medium brown to hide my baldness but not sure what to use that will retain the color. Any help / idea would be greatly appreciated 🙏

You could do a shade darker than you intend and you have red under tones usually any *ash* colors won't turn your hair red. From box dyes you can apply to your roots directly twice a week and only for 5 minutes. Split your dye and developer and reuse later in the week to retouch
Reddish hair mix with an ash in a 50/50 ratio. Don’t leave on too long especially on exposed scalp and don’t go over development time to avoid hot roots or red/orange roots going forward. I pray for your complete recovery. I am no expert this is what I do. Be blessed.

Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for this video! It was informative and direct and to the point. Loved it!
I loved everything about this video! Took notes and everything thank you so much !!
Great video. Easy to understand and to the point!
looooove this, what if you have highlights and want to go darker? should I still apply at the roots first?
Omgg i love you!!! Just what I needed! So informative, thank you, thank you , thank you!!
Should’ve watched this before I went to Sally’s ❤️ but I did good on my green from pink 🥰 thank you Sam!!!
You’re very good at explaining color💜😇 Thank you ☀️
Very impressive video. Just what I was looking for! Thank you for sharing your knowledge💕
Finally found a video that explains everything . Thanks so much
Should I do a protein treatment before I dye my hair? Then an olaplex treatment and deep condition after?
Very good information! I learned a lot from you in this one :) thanks, Sam!
Thanks so much for all the helpful info and for sharing your knowledge! Really appreciate it!
It took me 6 months of searching RUclips to gather the information you have in this 13 min video!! Thank you so much!

For your hair.
Be blessed.
Hiding the balding using a spray on colour or powder helps too 🙏✅
Thanks for explaining this so well. ❤❤❤
Thank you for explaining semi-permanent hair dye! I knew what it was but I had questions.. would you recommend doing a root chat with a semi? My roots tend to always want to pull orangey
Sam, thank you so much for this video. I am 44 yrs old and wanting to cover my gray hairs. I am going to job interviews soon and I didn't know how to color my hair, since last time I did it I was in my 20s. So my hair is pretty much virgin. I am going to Sally's and follow your advice. Other things you can recommend to color stubborn gray hairs?
Hi, I will be trying the demi ion hair color and why is it best to apply on damp hair rather than dry Thank Again!
How do people only use toner just to keep the color fresh? Like what do you mix the toner with if you’re not using dye? I’d like to keep my dark hair fresh
