Installing a Pocket Door Frame in an Existing Wall

  • Today I am installing a pocket door frame in an existing wall that happens to be for our guest bathroom. The existing bathroom door swung to the right as you walked in. It's amazing how much room the swing of a door takes up in a small bathroom. It takes up about 8 square feet. This one of the main reasons why we love pocket doors.
    We showed you a video last week of the built-in shelves that we are planning to install in the wall behind where the door used to swing in front of it. You can watch that video here:
    Planning Bathroom Organization with Built In Wall Shelves
    • Planning Bathroom Orga...
    Now you know why the wall was all torn up. I had not talked about the installation of our new pocket door. Before we start the built-in shelves project we needed to finish the drywall around the pocket door. So I thought I would talk about the pocket door frame in this video. I have installed many over the years because they are co easy.
    So this video explains the installation of the pocket door frame.
    I didn't show hanging of the door and how it slides, that will have to be in another video.
    Here is where you can buy your frame:

    Because Japan solved the issue of stupid swinging doors long time ago. If I ever get to a new house built, I'll do as much as possible to get pocket doors all over the place. Saves so much room and looks so clean.

      They are usually made by half-as* carpenters with thin cheap materials and they warp and derail often and make hella noise. Make a good one and they are awesome, buy a cheap one and they are amazingly awful.

Buying our first home and struggling to find bathrooms where the door doesn’t skim against the bath when you open and have to squeeze round to get to the loo. Pro tip - if you find one with an extra bedroom next to it, you can cut part of the bedroom out for a larger sized shower room (gotta build that yourself but hell of a luxury), and the other weird spot left inside the bedroom, wall if off into a walk in closet the size of your new shower. You may thank me later, anyone who does this.

    Thanks for making this video. We have exactly the same layout and situation that you had--left door swing into the bathroom--a pantry to the left and in the hallway a bedroom door to the right. My wife wants a pocket door to save space and allow us to put a towel rack on the wall that is now behind the current door when it opens. Space is tight. Problem is/was light switch and outlet in the wall just inside the bathroom door.. After watching your video, I'm thinking it can be done. I'll be removing and installing a custom vanity, so I'm thinking of removing the drywall and doing the stud removal and header work from the bathroom side. At any rate--thanks for the how-to!

    2:25 you can see that he used an ABS electrical box. that has surface mount flanges. you dont want that. there are plenty of models that have flanges that mount on the studs. for everything else there are easy mount boxes that are for "after thoughts." this would have been a great opportunity to use and introduce that to the audience.

    I wonder if we could do a pocket door on our master bath 🤔 it kinda drives me crazy when I'm trying to put stuff into our linen closet and someone tried to come in (closet is right behind where the door opens up). 🤔 Same issue on my girls bathroom. 🤔

    • @Remodelaholic
      @Remodelaholic  5 лет назад

      The only thing you have to be sure about is if the walls are bearing walls (I would suggest getting proper professional advise for that)! If they aren’t - then it is pretty doable! We have done this in 5 of our 7 houses- sometimes more than once in a house- in tight spaces and it has been amazing every time! I am just always shocked by the space it frees up when you aren’t worried about the door swing! And if you have open access to one side of the wall, I love how minimally invasive it can be to fix it! Good luck!

    Love pocket doors for same reason. Curious - did you leave room on the latch side for trim install - approx 6"? Was the bath vanity screwed into the previous wall studs? How did you get the 1" screws into the pocket door frame from the vanity side, when the vanity is in the way?

    • @cassityremodelaholic6221

      Georgia Fan, great questions. I did leave room on the latch side. In fact I just finished trimming out the door, but i don't have a video yet. I will be making that soon. The bathroom was not screwed into the wall so that was not an issue for me. I did screw in the 1" screws into the existing drywall where I could working around the existing vanity. Stay tuned for an upcoming video about how I trimmed out the door frame.

    Is there a way to build a pocket door into a closet? We have a closet next to the bathroom door, and the only way we could insert a pocket door would be into the same size as the closet. Would you cut into the closet and make it more narrow to use some of that space for the pocket door? (Hope that makes sense).

      I think you can. It would help to see a photo and a drawing with some dimensions of what you are thinking of.
      I installed a pocket door next to a shower wall. I just had to make the wall thicker to hold the pocket.

    Hi, thanks for the video, super informative, especially since we are currently in the same situation. I have a big question that I would love if y'all could answer it for me. Our house was built in 1880, so all of our doors are solid wood. Would the same process be possible with around about the same materials except the door obviously, because we don't have a lot of room to make this happen as well, about the same as y'all. Until this video we were doubting the possibility with major money and demo! Thanks so much, love you video's, binge watching all day!

    • @Remodelaholic
      @Remodelaholic  3 года назад

      I'm sure that you will be dealing with lath and plaster not drywall. It also depends on wether your wall is bearing weight or not. I would consult with a contractor to see how you could do it to be safe in that old of a house.
      If it were my house I think there could be a way to make it happen.

    • @Remodelaholic
      @Remodelaholic  3 года назад

      I matched the height of the other doors in the hallway. The frame is a typical height. If it's shorter you need to cut off the bottom and reduild it.
      For us there is no threshold, our floor is now the same in the hall and bathroom. We later updated the floor in the entire main floor of the house. If you have different floors, you just have to make sure your door has atleast a 1/2" of clearence above the transition strip of the floor. You might have to cut the bottom of the door to make it work.
