Definitely team GWA2. Whilst there are a few minor features that the 3 has over the active, the main three are the bezel, the look, and the storage.
The physical bezel obviously feels nicer, but i actually enjoy how I can go from swiping to scrolling without lifting my finger from one to the other compared my my galaxy watch
As for looks, the 3 has the overall win, but with ringkes case and leather straps, I actually really like how it looks as a dress watch, so I don't see the extra money as worth it. Only real difference is that some analogue faces look off when not reaching the edge of the watch on the active 2. Especially white ones, but in more of a digital guy anyway, and there are more than enough analogue ones that work great for smart occasions.
As for storage, whilst its significantly better on the 3, I don't often download songs onto my watch, and the effort of adding or removing a bunch every now and then saved by the 3 isnt worth the extra 100
Overall for sport I dont see much difference (its only like ten bucks for a leather or rubber replacement strap) and for general use they both seen the same. Whilst most would agree that the 3 looks better and the physical bezel is nicer to use, for the extra 100 dollars for cosmetic changes and a few gb more storage I can't really say the 3 is worth it over the active 2, especially when all the other specs are identical, and the few features that the 3 has will probably be added to the active 2

GGG GG yes, the O2 saturation is not available for the active 2, but that’s just a gimmick, we’re not 70 years old or have lung issues to need that. And even if we would need it, we’d actually buy a certified dedicated medical device for that. Where I believe Samsung really dropped the ball with the Watch 3 is putting only 1GB RAM on it. Having 50% more RAM on the Active 2 may not count today, but for sure it will count 2 years down the line. Because of the RAM, but also look and feel of it, I really do not think the Watch 3 is a replacement for the Active 2, so I honestly would not be tempted to shift from one to the other. If I consider the almost double price tag, for sure I wont. Having an iPhone makes it really easy to compare the Active 2 with the Apple Watch 3 and the S Watch 3 with the Apple Watch 5 (in this market these pairs have basically the same price tag). The Active 2 only has AOD as a plus, but lacks the ability to pay with the watch or to respond to notifications. The Watch 5 has nothing despite the different look against the Apple Watch 5, whilst the Apple variant has a lot of things working for it which the Samsung is utterly lacking. On an iPhone I’d go with the Apple Watch variant any day as it makes a lot more sense and the Samsung offering lacks basic functionally that is offered when paired with an Android device. On Android, I’d get one of the 2 Samsung offerings; I’d basically keep my problematic Active 2.

How does the active 2 do in sleep tracking and heart rate since you seem like fellow active 2 owners. I've heard heart rate tracking isn't accurate and the algorithms for calorie burning isn't accurate (not expecting 100% accuracy since it's almost impossible but looking at least for a relatively good amount of accuracy for the price and would get a Fitbit instead if needed)

I bought my first smartwatch ever last year (Galaxy Active 2). Before, I've never done any kind of research on smartwatches, so when i bought it, i was pretty reckless with it, thinking "whatever, probably some new neat smartwatch will come out soon".
Wow was i wrong. A year of waiting to get the same exact product with a new skin and a price tag that hardly makes sense...

    • @coreykix
      @coreykix 4 года назад +13

The Galaxy watch active 2 and the Galaxy watch 3 are too separate products made for different customers based on life style. If you want to see a real improvement you need to compare it to the Galaxy watch. Which this is the direct upgrade to. Watches aren't something that you need to upgrade frequently. Before I got the Galaxy watch active 2 I had a gear S3 frontier. Which was 3 years old maybe even more. No reason to feel like your missing out or anything.

    • @mantasdapkus1198
      @mantasdapkus1198 4 года назад +6

I will still feel like missing out. Active 2 doesn't feel responsive enough to me. Sometimes it lags 2 sec to open the built in timer. Not even worth speaking about the Google Assistant mod that I've loaded to this watch. Yes, it's a custom mod, but nevertheless, a mod that would be very neat if the watch had enough processing power.
Phones somehow managed to become crazy good with development of new processors, that are becoming faster and more battery efficient. They have either reached a point where you don't miss out anymore, or are very close to it.
It's not the case with watches. Time is running past and as a consumer, i feel having the right to expect for improvements. If Watch 3 was released a month after the Active 2, i wouldn't be ranting about it. But now it feels like Samsung was ready for a quick launch of Watch 3, but instead they have kept it away from us for almost a year, just to... Milk the Galaxy Watch's sales.
And now they have launched it with style, by putting THIS price tag on it. Guys, i think we deserve better.
If we asked Samsung where did they improve over the last year (in regards of smartwatches) - since their last 'best in line', their answer would probably be 'marketing'.
I sure hope that Active 2 is getting Tizen 5.5. Knowing that internals are pretty much the same, if they didn't gave it to us, i would take it as a finger in my face.

I recently bought Samsung GWA2. I believe the only reason to buy galaxy watch 3 should be the rotating bezel and spo2 sensor support. Other than that it's useless.
Everything is same. Also Active 2 is more versatile. Use Rinke/Spigen case with screen protector for the protection and you are good to go. What's the use of fitness features if your watch is bulky? Will you really wear it while working out?
To wear Active 2 professionally, just buy a leather strap. (spigen/rinke case elevates it's esthetics too and makes it look classy)
In short, Active 2 can become galaxy watch 3 with some accessories and still it would be worth it. But Galaxy watch 3 cannot become active 2.
Want to play with rotating bezel? Buy galaxy watch 3.
Want to purchase smartly, buy Active 2.

You can check various stats on the watch without using touchscreen, which can come handy if you are wearing gloves. Also it protects the display, and I have accidentally bumped the watch on walls etc numerous times without any real damage. It will be 3 years soon, and the watch has been worth it.

I'm waiting for some bigger change, for me It's not worth the price. I would consider buying if it was for like 300-350€ max.

    Team GW3, without a doubt.
I tried the GWA2 for a week, but I couldn't get over the non-physical rotating bezel and the boring look. To me the GWA2 is a watch you only wear for working out, the GW3 is one you wear for any other situation AND for working out (if you get a silicon band). It looks way better, has double the amount of storage (which is usefull as where I live there is no e-sim support yet) and will have longer software support. Even though prices here in Belgium are way above the prices mentioned in this video, I'd still spend the extra money, knowing that it's a watch I'd keep for long term.

I work in a hospital and the Active 2 is perfect for me. I can set multiple timers or alarms to remind me to recheck a vital sign, etc. It's also more streamlined. This is important because sharp edges like knobs can cause skin tears accidentally on elderly patients. Another plus is that it's easy to clean. That being said, I won't be upgrading to the Watch 3. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not practical for me.

I have been trying to make a decision on this for the past few days. This is going to be my first smart watch and I wanted to make the right decision, especially because of how costly these watches are. I came across your video and I love all the detail you put into your reviews. I agree that the leather strap for the GW3 is not great for working out, but you can still change them if need be at least. I've seen people change the straps to make the watch go from casual to fancy looking. I've also seen people change the look of the bezel for those that just want one color tone instead of the two color tones on the watch. I thought that was pretty cool and it looks great. So for me personally, I'm gonna go with the GW3. Thank you so much for posting this and I subscribed to you for my future Samsung purchases. Have a wonderful day.

Excellent video. I went from Galaxy Watch to Watch Active 2 44mm. There's no need to upgrade. I hill and mountain climb too, and always put on a silicon cover when I do to protect the whole watch body and screen. I call it my watch condom! All that stuff will come to Active 2, and faces will even come to Gear S3. And I expect gestures etc to arrive with Tizen updates. As for storage I have about 500 songs on my Watch Active 2 for when I'm out running and have never got past 180 mins workout.. That's only about 50 songs. 10% of what's on board the watch. 8gb is overkill in my opinion, but I'm sure others might want more, but there is no real practical benefit to that much storage on a watch and paying up to $120 extra for the privilege. But if I had a Gear S3 or Galaxy Watch 1, I would definitely upgrade to this if I wanted a physical bezel or Active Watch 2, if I wanted a lighter neater looking design. Stick out buttons can be very annoying when in your mountaineering gear as they get stuck in the elasticated sleeves.

Then I saw they added soft rotating bezel with no parts to get stuck on A2, so I bought it almost a year ago and couldn't be happier. Love the soft rotating bezel & all the features including a speaker useful for Bixby. Battery life is till barely a day but I use the vibrating notifications for timers on workouts so that probably contributes to that. Bonus was the dozen or so quick-change watch bands that had bought for my old one fit perfectly on this one too.

I just purchased a galaxy watch, and the galaxy watches active two for the same price as the more massive galaxy watch three. All of the devices are named half the same processor, the only difference is the battery sizes and screen sizes. Apart from the advanced health features on the galaxy Watch active two and galaxy watch three, the galaxy watch is steel beast. As for the four gigs of RAM being not enough, it’s more than enough to hold enough music for someone to listen to on a run. I would have instead had a larger battery or more functionality rather than more ram to store music/other items. Very good work Mike. Direct to the point and easier to take decision. Gt2 is the one I have. Thinking of SGW3. The only draw back is battery life from one to another. Not sure how it feels to charge every other day though.

i have the first galaxy watch and the active 2 which i used in water swimming activities in my house pool and both of them have hold the claim of being ip68. this galaxy 3 did not hold even just one swimming time after just 3 weeks of ownership. send it to Samsung care and they won't honor the warranty and want me to pay 220 for the repair.
if you're planning to use it on water like swimming i would not recommend to buy it.
update: received the watch from the repair center and the back cover of the watch was broken, 3 of the 4 holes that keep it on please where broken. and was hanging by the cable from the sensor attached to the main board on the case.

Having bought the Gear S3 3 yrs ago I have to say the rotating bezel became a nuisance in that it stopped working on me twice. First time under warranty, 2nd not. I just bought the active 2 this past weekend. Hoping it has less issues with the bezel and display over time than the Gear S3 had!

Great review Mike, as you've stated.. samsung continues to not fulfill promises. Think I'll plunge for the SWA2 just because...and just continue to wait. I noticed using my GF"s GW, regardless of strap, it rarely tracked my HR.. unless I stopped (forced it into wrist and waited). Hopefully GWA2 will do better with sensors? Thanks again..

My wife has the LTE Active Watch 2, and the Number Sync doesn’t work. We were told by AT&T support that there is supposed to be a update to fix it, but who knows when that will happen? Previously she had a another LTE Galaxy watch, and that also had a problem with Number Sync that AT&T could never fix. We spent long hours and days working with tech support from both AT&T and Samsung, and even sent it to a Samsung repair center in TX, and it was still returned unfixed. SMH Now here we go again. I don’t understand why Samsung has such difficulty getting LTE to work on their watches? When I posted about the previous problem on a Samsung blog I received replies from people all over the world with the same problem. Meanwhile I’ve had 2 LTE Apple Watches a Series 2 & my current Series 4 and they’ve been problem free. No problems at all. Samsung really needs to figure out what they’re doing wrong, and Apple is doing right.

How many songs can you get into a GB of memory ?
Ever try to listen ,via Bluetooth , to your entire 1GB library you've synced to your watch while away from a charger ?
IMO an extra 4 gig of memory will never be able to be fully utilized on a device with a 340mah battery .
This comes from a long time , almost every model owner , of the Samsung watches .
Snap on bezel /screen covers on Amazon are under $10 for 2 if you're like me and are hard on watches . Leather or metal watch bands under $20 all day long if you want a dressier look .
Physical rotate vs virtual was meh for me .
Active 2 for the win for me .
