Insulate your ceiling and you won't get ice dams. I'm in a northern climate with only an R7 roof and never had a problem. If you are putting batts in your ceiling, you typically need to ventilate or you will get mold, that is what the ridge vent is for. There are closure strips to prevent those from leaking. Up here you would do a vapor barrier inside as well, but in warmer climates that is not needed. Honestly, I'd pull all of that steel off and put house-wrap on the whole thing and then flashing tape around the windows. It will never leak. It may sound daunting but it actually pretty easy, the caulking will not last and can create more problems because it can't drain like it is engineered to.
Some good tips,, a few I wish I had thought about before I ordered mine.. as for "drywall",, I used white reflectix.. and to help mitigate ice dams,, put some insulation up there..
I have a Weatherking barn/garage with the double lofts. They are great, but I wish I got the metal siding added, I didn't know it was an option. And yeah, pallets are horrible to work with. :(
Do you notice less cell phone service with all of the metal? Metal roof, siding, inside walls etc. Seems it would reduce reception. Thanks for the thorough walk thru. I will shop a bit more to find a dealer that offers the particular siding. 😊
It's really hard to say because it's hard to get a signal anywhere in my neighborhood. I have a Jetpack and an antenna, and the reception in general has gotten better over the years. However, cellular signal will pass through the windows, and the walls of these buildings are thing, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm a RUclipsr; I take phone calls and video calls every day; and my wife is always on her phone; so even though we don't get good reception, it's still good enough to stay connected and do the things we have to do. My advice is to check the reception when you're looking at land. If you're looking at an empty lot, and you're not getting any bars on your phone, you're going to have problems no matter what type of building you put on the property. If, however, you can get a good or decent enough signal, you should be fine. Hope that helps.
I bought something similar to what you did. I assumed (dumb a$$) that it would be built to general residential housing standards, well, I was wrong. None of the doors or windows have headers, the corners aren't drywall ready, meaning there is nothing to nail to and there are no ceiling joists to screw dry wall to. The roof is prefab'd rafter assemblies and the horizontal is about 20 inches above the upper wall sill. And, as you said, I had to go around filling gaps with chalk and spray foam. I'm not unhappy with what I got, but I wish I had asked more questions.
Ah, yeah, it's hard to find good info on that. I think I have some vids and pics on an SD card somewhere. Maybe I can edit something together. In short, though, I simply made a box out of 1/2" plywood and 2x4s to fit the window opening; cut 4" diameter hole in the middle; screwed a thimble around it; and then ran my flu/chimney pipes through it. Then I got a special chimney cap from Tiny Wood Stoves to block rain AND wind in all directions because otherwise the blowback would be really bad at such a low height.
OSB Dry, it's Odious Splinter Board. Wet, it's Odious Sponge Board. Local dealers tell you you can't modify your building until you pay it off. That's why I haven't done that yet.
Hi did I miss maybe??? Why you live in a shed? Also are you in a tiny house community? I believe I saw another tiny house in your video.. You have lots of information in this video. Thanks. Great idea 👍☮️
The tiny house is a temporary living space while I build our main house. No, I am not part of a community. The other buildings are mine, as well. I think you might be referring to my greenhouse, which I'll show in a future video.
im living in a lofted barn style, because heat rises it doesnt get bad cold up in the loft but in summer, its june now, it gets very warm. im in Tennessee just mpved here from Pheonix , so i know about that desert heat.. Here is ok because it cools off pretty good at night, Im curious how you cool off your place?
I don't. That was a big mistake. Originally planned on using cross ventilation, but my wife didn't like the placement of the windows, so she changed it. First summer, she acknowledged how badly she f'd up.
Do the light test backward. Bright light inside. Night outside. Sweet little house. Sweet doggies. Praise them when they bark at strangers that turn out to be you. Don't make them feel stupid for doing their job. How about some waterproofing painted on the under surface of the floor? Or both sides of that surface. Do that before it is attached to the building. Make sure the foundation is stable. Blocks on mush won't do it. Level it yourself. Its YOUR house so do it right. Extra depth for the studs... add 2 by 2s to the interior surface of the existing 2 by 4 studs. You'll have the depth you want at half the extra weight of a full stud.
Yeah I thinking the same thing. I may be wrong but that stove pipe looks like 6” galvanized HVAC duct. I would recommend double walled flue pipe. Not criticizing, just thinking about you and your families safety. Nice place.
@@gregoryenste8459 The flue is just standard black stove pipe I bought separately from the stove - 5" diameter. The shiny stuff on the outside is galvanized telescoping pipe that came with the stove. I address all of this in my recent video about the stove. Thanks!
I will one day, but it's not a big deal. Something I regret not clarifying is that I live in a mostly dry, moderate climate. It's very forgiving. My wife and I spend more time outside than inside. One day, I will make some pretty big upgrades to this building, but it will probably be many years from now.
@@dtruth5769 My toilet is just a bucket with pine shavings. I built a wooden box for it to go in and the seat to go on. Shower and sink are just gravity systems. Shower is a bag that hangs from the ceiling over a freestanding shower pan. It drains to gravel outside. The sink is a 2 gal water tank on a shelf over the sink basin. It drains to a 5 gal bucket underneath.
I'm off-grid, so my bathroom is very simple. Just a composting toilet and a shower that drains to the ground outside. Shower is just a shower bag hanging from the ceiling. You could, however, do it just like any other bathroom with conventional plumbing.
Love the comprehensive and practical down to earth tips and recommendations. Much better than most.
Thanks! Happy to help.
I thought so too, he gave simple 'important'' facts, perfect for people just learning to convert these buildings..

That gap between the lofts could be covered with a few sheets of 8' long foam board for a temp ceiling
These are real tips!!! Thanks!!!

The pacing back and forth is killing me 😂 but great video and I'll be doing this soon!
Thank you, this was very helpful as I start doing some research on this option for our future cabin

Doesn't the top of the chimney need to be higher than the roof for it to draw properly? Very informative video. Thank you.

Install electric heat tapes under the eaves to prevent ice dams. You can hook it up to a temperature switch to cone on when it gets down to freezing

OSB and plywood or a glue factory of toxic chemicals you should cover the outside of your shed with rocks
Okay, thanks. I'll do that.
Does your wood stove go through the window
Yes. I'm gonna make a video about the stove soon because lots of people keep asking.
What about mice?
Why doesn't anyone talk about the land it sits on. Do you own the land?

Sorry you feel that way. I like women's sunglasses. Don't really get why that matters.
Think you need more room
Well, it is a TINY house, haha. But yeah, we do. That's one of the reasons I've been building us a bigger house.
I feel perhaps you shouldve done more homework before you took on this project. I feel the interior looks like the inside of a shed vs a home.
I think 3.5 years of living this way is quite a lot of "homework." My style clearly doesn't suit your taste. My bad.
Gosh walking around and around making me dizzy.
Dude, quit jawing and show us. I don’t want to watch 12 minutes and only see the door and hear why you wouldn’t do the floor again.
Some of us do....great thing about youtube, no one forces you to sit and watch 12 minutes of anything.., Just saying..no reason to be hateful
