Love your content as always. I was born and raised in Osaka, always feel great to see someone talking about my hometown, especially about denim! I know you like Japanese America, Hankyu Men's Osaka is at the top of my recommendation lists in Osaka. I personally never felt bored while browsing around the clothing store there, and there are lots of nice second-hand stores around there as well.

I remember Evisu jeans being the status symbol in high school in the early 2000s. You had your Bapes with Evisu jeans and these shirts with a big hand painted on them, I can’t remember the name but the lore was that each one was hand painted by this artist. Don’t know if that was true but yeah, they were super hyped. Just remember the shirts being very colorful and splatter painted. Yeah but Evisu was super important to hip hop/street fashion and it’s kind of been forgotten by the main stream at least in my eyes.

oooooooh nooooooo I wish I could sit down wit you...... you are missing lots and lots of information!!!
Your story should start with post-WWII and then Mel Matsui.
Also, "High-Dee-Yay-Koe Yah-Mon-Nay"'s brand "Evis" (pronounced "ebis") wasn't officially launched until 1995 - but was soon sued by LEVIS, almost running the brand into the ground. The company was re-branded as "EVISU" and nearly all creative control was handed over to [an outsider] to revitalize the brand for the European market. EVISU had absolutely no influence from the "hip-hop"/urbanwear market. "EBISU" is the Japanese god of fishing who represents good luck.... the actual clothing brand for the Japanese market centered around Yamane's obsession with fly-fishing. Evisu was a fishing lifestyle brand above all else - and jeans were almost a caveat, but got claim-to-fame for congee artists who hand-painted custom congee and/or the gull with laytex house paint. The jeans didn't pop off until they hit the UK around 1998. They retailed around $175 in Europe and Asia, but the mark-up at US boutiques hit around $275-$395.... even $500 in some cases because the U.S. didn't have an official retailer at the time. Once EVISU had distribution in the U.S., they kept the retail price at the reseller price, which wasn't sustainable - quick but high profit margins. Because of the frenzy for the gimmick'ie embellished denim and not the brand equity, Yamane felt humiliated and fired [the outsider].... but the brand had already peaked and the global market was looking to other brands by 2005.
I could go on and on.... The Warehouse Brothers, Kato, Toyo Enterprise, Larry Mclaughin, Eddie Phuket..... the denim game is CRAZY!!!
