My mom just surprised me with a pair of Momotaros from her trip to Japan. She’s entirely oblivious to selvedge and really really bad at attention to details. So I gave her a pair of my best fitting jeans and told her to go to Hinoya in Tokyo and just get whatever matches best with the jeans I gave her. When she got back, I pulled the jeans out from the bag and the first thing I immediately noticed was the signature stripes on the back pockets. And I just lost it! lol She had no idea she brought home a pair of the some of best denim on the planet!
@@lil_Perro she definitely was, and so was my dad who sticks to his beloved Levi’s. But I proceeded then to show some YT vids on the process of making these jeans and why they’re so special. They became believers. And now my mom makes sure I wear them all the time lol Which I do anyway. FYI, my mom doesn’t dress me. That’s a huge no-no! lol
I remember going through this phase yrs ago (2009 to be exact I’m an old head lol😅) and I know the the feeling of pouring hrs of research in to Japanese denim even more so when I didn’t have money and I saved for the pair I was eyeing for months AND not only that, wearing that same pair for almost a year lol. From the competition samurai, pbj, studio d artisan, iron hearts etc. Funny how apc is such a large brand now, back then it was considered a much lower end brand compared to what was available

This was an incredibly informative video. I went to Japan and stumbled upon Evisu - walked out with 5 pairs and I will treasure them forever. I’m going back to Japan soon and can’t wait to look at some more of these brands
I was on a selvedge denim binge back in 2012 to 2015 and bought up a ton of pairs that will last me the rest of my life, haha. Two of my favorite brands are Pure Blue Japan and Oni denim. My current pair that I wear as often as I can and have some nice fades on them are a real nice pair of Oni denim.
So long as you don't gain too much weight. What I like about collecting denim is that they're liquid as in you can buy and sell them on the open market.
Its a great obsession. My first pair of raw denim was Levis dead stock 501 big E which i found in American Classics. Then moved onto Evis before they went mass market. Still wearing some of them now
Bought APC PNS in 2011, wore them for 6 years throughout college. Got a 2nd pair of 3Sixteen 16oz around 2015 and wore those for 5 or so years. Recently got a pair of Rogue Territory 12oz in the stanton cut. Nothing more comfortable than a pair of raw denim broken in on your own body. Nothing more gorgeous than a pair of thrashed raw denim. Love this video. Raw indigo denim is just the coolest. I’d love to know your thoughts on Levis Japan jeans. They are I’m sure a notch below the origin 🇯🇵 but I do love the legendary American/Japanese combo idea.
I love Japanese denim. I have a pair of Momotaro 0605 (Natural Taper) in 15.7oz denim. I want a pair of straight fit denim, and am considering either a pair of Iron Hearts of a pair of Edwin Japan. Both of which are sold by a local stockist. IF you are interested in denim, and don't (or can't) spend $300USD+ for a pair, I would look at some excellent North American brands. Naked & Famous is a good entry point, or perhaps The Unbranded Brand. Other very good brands include Left Field NYC, Rogue Territory and 3sixteen.
personally a pair of USA made 501s>most japanese denim purely based on the price to quality… I love Japanese brands but every era has good quality clothing, it’s all about seeing enough to recognize it (even outsourced Levi’s from the early 2000’s have advantages over other denim that may be “better quality” such as cuts that were never made etc.)
For some there's more to it than that though. I own a couple of pairs of Levis and I like them but when I discovered MIJ denim I prefer to support it because I like the Japanese attitude towards manufacturing. The name Levis means pretty much nothing to me. I'm more interested in the spirit of the endeavor. I would rather support smaller scale manufacturers where I have a better idea that from dyed thread to pair of jeans I know it's all done in a country that generally has decent treatment of workers and the product is more an example of "slow fashion". Levis says on their website that those made in America jeans (which I don't think are available anymore; correct me if I'm wrong), are made using imported denim. So in other words, sweatshop denim in all likelihood. I just find a lot more transparency and honesty in smaller companies like that then in giant corporations like Levis who are more reactive to things than proactive about doing a better job. I guess I just believe that it's probably better for the planet if jeans don't cost 40 bucks and are a "disposable" item like all the other fast fashion stuff. Maybe things should cost more so we can waste less.
Ralph Lauren uses Japan denim to make jeans in America, Imogene and Willie makes American made jeans aswell. Make a video if you ever try a 21st century American made jean!
Selvedge denim has its waves and it’s nice to see it again, It’s coo cause we dont want them to hype the price like they do with shoes accessories etc.
My understanding is a lot of those Japanese brands bought up old looms from American factories when those American companies started to outsource. The vintage looms are a lot of what makes the character of the denim and I sometimes wonder what will be done when those looms just can't function anymore. Are there new looms that produce good quality selvage denim? Not to be a bummer or anything. On the final question a couple years ago I decided when I purchased new clothes I really wanted to get clothes from more socially conscious brands rather than just fast fashion crap. My girlfriend got a denim jacket from some FF sale and advised I get a denim jacket and I was like 'no, denim jackets aren't my style'. Now I have three raw, selvage denim jackets and three pairs of raw selvage jeans. So yeah... I changed my mind.
Really good video for someone who doesn't know much about denim. So it seems like cheap denim doesn't necessarily break down quicker and lasts shorter than raw or Japanese denim. A lot of it has to do with the method of manufacturing and the personalized process with raw denim.
Levis just drop their selvedge raw stf 501s and I love it. My first raw and selvedge jeans. I wish I have access to japanese denim. I love the quality to price ratio from Japanese brands.
Great video, Drew! I definitely caught the Japanese denim bug now 😎👌🏾 Alongside that, a new genre for me is handbags. Never was a bag person until recently-specifically belt bags have been catching my eye these days.
For American denims (or at least denim garment assembly), I'd suggest checking out groups like Leftfield, Hardenco, Randy's Garments, and Proximity Denims. Just putting that out there. There are good groups making denim garments in America and Japan; you've just gotta know where to look.

a slight disparity, blue collar workers are called so not because of the denim, but because they couldn't afford wearing white collar shirts and wash them regularly unlike bourgeois , so they wore blue ones. Apart from that, a really interesting and fascinating video
For a good entry-point pair of selvage denim in Europe, I recommend Lager157 and their workwear-focused line 157 Roots. They have a bit more options, fit wise, compared to Uniqlo.
I lost my wardrobe recently..I currently only own 2 pair of denim. A black pair of Kenneth Coles (which is probably my current fave cuz the fit is CRAZY!) and a pair of blue Diesel jeans which are too big cuz they were the last pair in Marshall's lol. Now I'm hell bent on a pair of Momotaro GTBs
ive only recently been getting into it, have a pair of gray selvedge and kikko which i love a lot theyre just funky hate the fit but like it with them, the gray is too small which ive never been able to say before
Hey drew I was wondering if you could talk about the black experience in Colorado I was considering moving there.. Edit: Ik this was random lol but you the first person I thought of when the opportunity was presented to me.
I had a phase like this and now I always purchase selvedge jeans! Did you also try putting them in the freezer or soaking it inside out under the sun to prevent them from smelling since you shouldn’t wash them for the longest time?
Lol your photo of Jacob Davis is just an older photo of Levi. He was a fellow Latvian like me. We countrymen gotta look out for each other. 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻 Love your vids though
People in the "denimhead" world seem to have wrongly turned the meaning of the word "selvedge" into equaling "quality". Not sure how that happened. I only recently discovered the wonderful world of Japanese denim and after only a few days of looking into I was able to easily find that selvedge is simply the end border on the fabric created by shuttle looms. It has nothing to do with the quality of the denim. The quality of the denim is in the quality of the cotton, weaving, dying etc. So if you take the same threads and put half through a shuttle loom and half through a projectile loom you will basically have the same thing. If anything, a better argument can be made that the resulting projectile loom fabric will be better quality, because fabrics with tighter weaves are more durable. Projectile looms weave more tightly than shuttle looms. Of course, we know that there is more to it than just durability, but at least durability is an objective measure. Most everything else is a subjective aspect. Such as simply "liking" slubbiness, etc. This is where someone might probably argue "but on the projectile looms the edges may cause the fabric to unravel." To which the response is "yeah right.". People who sew know how to close those ends. Just look at any pair of non selvedge jeans. Those stitches are virtually never coming apart under any normal wearing conditions. When's the last time you ever had a pair of non selvedge jeans do that? I've never in my life seen that. So while technically true, that argument is completely ridiculous. People need to realize language matters. Selvedge does not equal quality.
My mom just surprised me with a pair of Momotaros from her trip to Japan. She’s entirely oblivious to selvedge and really really bad at attention to details. 15:30 seen some of your videos now i gotta real reason to sub man you breaking this fashion down to the molecule 💯 ppl really overlook the importance of lineage and i really over looked the history in fashion good talk 💯💯
Bravo man u just learn denim 101 when I have not learn any new ideas that I don't already know unfortunately. I could break down alot deeper of what I pick but nah can't give away my vision
a slight disparity, blue collar workers are called so not because of the denim, but because they couldn't afford wearing white collar shirts and wash them regularly unlike bourgeois , so they wore blue ones. Apart from that, a really interesting and fascinating video
It's "this pair of pants." "Pair" is singular. A pair, two pairs. This pair.
Uniqlo has a Salvage denim which could be a true entry point
For a good entry-point pair of selvage denim in Europe, I recommend Lager157 and their workwear-focused line 157 Roots. They have a bit more options, fit wise, compared to Uniqlo.
Luv your video, where did you get your denim exactly in Montreal? Keep going great job!
At ssense!
Great video! Are those pink Paraboot shoes?
Yes essentially haha they are by Collegium
Even History Channel couldn't do better 📚🗺️👖

@@DrewJoiner I just sent a message. appreciate it!
I had a phase like this and now I always purchase selvedge jeans! Did you also try putting them in the freezer or soaking it inside out under the sun to prevent them from smelling since you shouldn’t wash them for the longest time?
Don’t freeze them. That’s just a myth
After ~2 years of wearing Japanese denim I can't even look at any mass market and/or designer jeans, jackets, shirts, etc.
Hello does all selvedge denim "releases paint" and may stain anywhere you sit?
Will Selvage denim last longer?
Where the best place to buy Japanese denim

Lol your photo of Jacob Davis is just an older photo of Levi. He was a fellow Latvian like me. We countrymen gotta look out for each other. 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻

Will you do a video on the best-dressed ppl (celebs and IG/TikTok accounts)? A drip check 💧
I can definitely consider it
I wonder what would happen if we made a pair of jeans with the new age wool that doesn’t itch
Well done video.
Selvedge does not equal quality.
at least it's a channel about denim 😄
