One thing to mention is that these styles and the Urahara movement was a direct result of the stifling structure of Japanese culture.
In Japan there is a quote “出る釘は打たれる” which translates to “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down”. It’s a quote about conformity and how it is expected that Japanese become “beneficial members in society”. They are also taught not to stick out amongst peers as it would disrupt the harmony of Japanese society.
So for the Young Japanese it was important for them to do as much as they could in a limited amount of time they had to be “free” because as they got older they had to eventually conform.
It’s the reason why even young Japanese are so adept at fashion and styling. Magazines like Popeye, Mens Non-no, Ollie, Sense, Fruits, and more taught Japanese how to put together outfits and even today magazines continue to be a source of fashion and styling knowledge. So they could wear these styles and get involved in fashion quickly.
Come to Japan today and the styles from yesteryear still exist and being fleshed out with new ideas but you also see the young people who finally enter the professional workspace and end up abandoning a lot of what they did earlier UNTIL they reach and much older age and then explore the styles again.
That’s right. The amount of older people in Japan who invoke Urahara styles is surprisingly high.
But that being said this is a dope overview of the movement and I’m happy to see the appreciation of Japanese fashion. You gotta come Drew and when you do, hit up ya boy.

Reggie casual One of my favourite RUclipsrs. Your knowledge is next level. Just watched your Japan streetwear tour showing harojuku and shibuya and all sorts. I really want to go and find some vintage nigo era bape like Kanye era. I know someone who went in to harojuku a while back and has a nigo era bape multicoloured thin stripes grey knit sweater so rare and cool.

Fashion magazines are also worth to be mentioned here. Boon, smart, POPEYE, MEN’S NON-NO, asayan, FRUiTS, etc. it was kinda a high-status thing for young people to be photographed on the street in Urahara by these magazines.

OMG it would be absolutely incredible if you did deep dives/ videos on famous fashion schools! Bunka obviously but also places like FIT, Central Saint Martens, Parsons, etc etc. You could talk about the schools themselves, maybe the general pros and cons of the school and designers who studied there and maybe even see how the style of learning and such at these schools impacted the designers! There are already videos that talk about fashion schools, but I've never really encountered any that have done it this way, and it would be amazing to see!!

Yassss I would love to see this too . I went to a small art school for college and although we didn’t have fashion design, fashion programs are usually pretty tiny and it would be interesting to deep dive into the “schools of thought” behind different schools in different eras … cuz it’s suuuch a thing when students bounce ideas off each other for a few years , sometimes the aesthetic can be really driven by teachers but it’s usually students

For me, I am too big for the majority of Japanese brands sadly. My favorite brand from Japan has to be Fragment Design. I am a huge fan of Hiroshi Fujiwara and whenever I can get something that he has worked on, I go for it.

Orslow has been really speaking to me as of late, I like the relative simplicity of the of the pieces but with a huge focus on quality and attention to detail. If I’m aloud to cheat and name two brands from the pvv question, I have to name two cats brand, their type two jacket has been my main denim jacket for almost a year now, plus their wide brim bucket hats are my go to for keeping summer sun of my head. Really love to see this series continue and I hope to see this channel explode and get the following it deserves!

I have a LIST of video. First go through the graduates of the fashion school (please) that I will not try to spell . Talk abt their inspirations and tastes then video 3 talk about how that transcended into their brands. Talk about each brand within Japan and America. How they affected street wear. Lastly a look book of drew joiner Japanese streetwear fits. Maybe even collab with a brand👀. Okay im done finally.

Its a tough one,, but Hysteric Glamour has got to be my favourite Japanese brand. The brand is heavily influenced by 50s American pop culture which I absolutely love and they have some of the coolest denim I've seen. I don't own any pieces yet but I'm definitely looking to get my hands on some of their stuff,, especially their more vintage pieces.

I don't own any Japanese pieces unfortunately, the ones I would love to own tend to be quite pricy for a uni student 😅 Have been looking to get some second hand, but my favorites are definitely Kapital and Beams plus ✌🏻 #pvv
Edit: tbh I would have loved if the video was longer! I know it's completely intentional that these are more brief and summarized, but the longer videos of you taking your time to talk feels like being there chilling with you and talking bout fashion, I really enjoy that since I don't have many friends who are as deep into fashion!
