Proportion is the single-hand most important thing in fashion. Most important thing in design period. It's what they teach you in art school, fashion school, film school, anything design related. There's a reason why there's a certain height for males and females that are desired for runway fashion - all due to how proportions work. Proportions, rule of thirds, golden ratio, what-have-you: there's a proven idea that there is something innately mathematical that lives under what we consider "beautiful" for the human eye. Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man says it all. It's always about truly understanding your proportions when it comes to having your own style. Silhouettes, tones, and the little extras are what comes after. I've been gravitating towards minimalism over the years and it only recently dawned to me that this natural affinity stemmed from the fact that I have been training my brain to understand proportions better. If you truly understand proportions you can make any piece of clothing look good. You can sketch models and landscapes that look picturesque. You can take your photography and filmmaking to another level. You can create a whole new layer to your home and living space. Edit, forgot some movie recs: Fallen Angels, La Haine, and City of God
Batman and Superman are listed at 6’2 which I believe is the average height for most male models. They range between 6’1-6’3 ( usually) with 6’2 being the average. I wonder then if the comic artists and writers understand that this is the ideal ratio for males and is why they write them to be at that height. Edit. Apparently Superman is usually listed at 6’3. Which still falls under the male model height range. But….yeah lmao
Its crazy because I first subscribed to you because we both ballers and our sizes are exactly the same. You're definitely one of the reasons I quit the skinny pants and moved to straight fit when I was done with college. Been helping me with proportions since day 1.
I’ll say this being a bigger man 6’3 290 (football build) it’s definitely more challenging to find clothing that fit me how I want so going a size up for me is always necessary when it comes to pants. But listen to you drew and understanding and exactly applying this to my clothes and my own personal has definitely gave me a boost of confidence, I’m not saying I wasn’t confident (that’s beside the point) I’m sure everybody know the importance of knowing your measurements it can make or break many outfits and you’re tips and conversations of these podcast and videos have definitely given me a new perspective coming to fashion. I’m new extremely but I feel like I’ve found a way to accurately express myself and not give a damn what anybody thinks. I do want to say I appreciate your videos extremely. 🤛🏾🤛🏾 *two bumps P.S. I do want to say that your confidence in your fits are also what make the fits you put on and decide to wear you. The confidence you have the better it looks to your own self and to other. Peace & Love to everybody from an East Texan 🤞🏾
I'm a little bit chubby so ever since I started sizing up my tops I've felt much more comfortable with my rather awkward proportions. Having a more oversized/relaxed top esp with layers makes it super comfortable for me. It sucks though how I can't wear my true size sometimes since certain brands are WAY too fitted for my style.
Ye I went to a store (Carhartt WIP I think) and there was a guy who was pretty big, and yet his outfit fitted him perfectly to me and stood out compared to everyone else in the store. (He worked there and was rly kind to me). I think a big part of it was his confidence in wearing his fit.
I’m a wider guy - big shoulders, big chest, and “skips cardio” in the middle - and going oversized on the top has made everything just click. Works way better in winter, but sort of applies in summer too. I keep the bottom half fitted though, which I guess I’m lucky I can, but skinnier fitting bottom half evens me out instead of looking like that big white robot thing from that kids movie
Can you talk more about proportions and how they should look? I’m a 5’8” stocky guy with thick thighs and wide shoulders, and I feel like it’s hard to get proportions or silhouette right. I would love to learn more from you

You need to do a video on what to wear if you’re short 😂 I feel like it’s always hard to find good clothes with the right proportions as a short guy, because they’re always aimed at medium/large sizes (understandably tbf)
Mr Drew, I am aware of this odd suggestion of a film for you to view however this movie is Cars ( 2006). I highly recommend this because the colour, shading and overall appearance of the movie. The story is one of common although it always surprises to delights me in it.
post vidvid gang. love the community, everyone sharing sum education in fashion. The difference between the two is very important. wonderful video as a young man, just getting started at fashion, you help me alot. from philippines drew
Loved the video! Very important elements to consider. No snow has occurred. The three movies I would recommend would be: Stalker Death by hanging Oldboy
The vid was short and sweet which is what most look for. I think you got all the points across and made it really easy to digest. Personally i think proportions is easily more important overall when it comes to styling myself. As a shorter dude (5’6) I struggle with tees and shirts being longer than i would like because they make my legs look shorter which can make the outfit unflattering. I don’t mind my height at all and I don’t think anyone should be insecure about it but I absolutely hate it because I am typically unsatisfied with how most things fit especially when it comes to designer/high end garments since they’re usually meant for a average/tall body type. Loved the energy in the post vidvid btw! Sorry i dont have any movie recommendations 😅
Find a good tailor! You can hem your shirts for ~$10 and have them look more flattering on you. I'd personally recommend trying to avoid buying any shirts that you'd want to take more than 1 - 1.5" off, because it can ruin the proportions, especially on a button up shirt or graphic tshirt. You can also try out Asian designers, particularly Japanese brands, which cater more often to shorter men. I personally enjoy brands like Engineered Garments, Beams Plus, or Still By Hand. Hope that helps!
liked this vid, drew! would have liked to see other kinds of body types just to zero in on the proportions of the human body. of course there are endless varieties of body proportions but some more common ones are : heavy top, skinny bottom. small waist, thick legs. (we wanna look cute too!) big arms and thighs. i think it’d be helpful to highlight more of the community other than skinny, wide and “regular”. love your content and evolution as a creator!
6:00 - "you can see the rule of thirds applies nicely here" - actually, I can't. Could you explain where the thirds are? Especially the guy's fit, it looks like his shirt end line is dividing him roughly in half. Would be helpful for you to add video affects showing the 2/3 'rds split.
I really enjoy the science of breaking down an outfit with shapes. It kind of puts everything into perspective for me. But to recommend three movies you HAVE to watch in my opinion would be Gangs of New York, They Live, and finally the original Spider-Man from 2002 #postvidvid
I can't say that Im much into fashion but I like to dress to look good and feel good and I think your videos have helped me think about what I wear differently to put better fits together as well as expose me to some out-there things that I wouldn't normally see so I thank u for that. For what more I'd wanna see on the channellll.... I think an evolution of style video could be pretty cool. just lookin at how things have evolved over time, especially with the internet exploding the access to everything. Also a video on driving forces of trends could be something. these are half baked ideas but whatever Movie recs; Imma keep it season themed so theyre all christmas movies, at least thats what my family celebrates this time of year. first my family watches a Christmas Story probably 5 times a season, me mum loves it. second, I think Diehard is also a good one to throw in there, keep it spicy in a normally calm season. finally, the Charlie brown Christmas special for the nostalgia but more importantly for the music; heat across the board for Christmas music. also ill throw in Home alone for good measure (1 & 2 if u wanna marathon em)
I’ve been watching old films for the most part since I found a theater that runs them. I watched the Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) which I had fun with, but it’s entirely in German, I’m going to go see Devil in a Blue Dress (1995, it has Washington and Cheadle in the lineup so I’m hyped) and Kagemusha (1980, I love Akira Kurosawas other movies so I gotta go) once I get back to college from the holidays. Hands down the best thing is to look back at the greats and see how they managed amazing shots with less technology.
here in aus it's abt 115f or 45c rn, so no snow imaoo. also, measuring the inleg/inseam is mad useful to get well-fitting pants. idk, kinda ties into proportions cause most people only measure length and waist.
Proportions is deffo key in any form of aesthetic, look or design. I realised this when I discovered I dont actually have a specific 'type' of women lookswise. I think woman all shapes and sizes are beautiful...whether skinny or thick - but what I noticed was i'd be subconsiously drawn to how good their body and face proportions are. I think that's what defines real beauty.
still no snow here in the alps where im at. but best movies that I do have: Princess Mononoke (OR: Nausicaa of the valley of the wind), Parasite, and The Favourite
Wow..just stumble upon your video...excellent explanations...you make thing look do easy....I am saving all you videos to reference to over and over again...well done!!!!
Great video, I'll just say "wear what you love and what you feel comfortable in". A movie that I loved and still love watching, not a Christmas movie, is La grande bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino.
Maybe I was expecting a guide for what proportions and silhouettes look good for different body types. Most ppl say I dress good but I know I haven't found "my style" yet and I don't know how to apply what's being said. For example, if I'm that guy who creates bad unflattering proportions and silhouettes, how do I fix that?
Hi Drew, As of recent i've been getting really into fashion and finding my own personal style and I randomly stumbled upon your channel and I've been watching all of your vids. And I just wanted to say I was shocked when you said you lived in Colorado cause I also live in Colorado. Anyways keep up the great work on all the videos.
The rule of thirds is also a thing in music. The proportion lines up with the so-called "Golden ratio." It's supposedly all over Debussy's music, it's certainly all over Bartok's.
Great vid Drew. Here in CT it snowed last week, but all melted cause it was 50 degrees the very next day, it was pretty crazy. 3 movies: Its a wonderful life, Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049. Its a wonderful life is like THE Christmas movie in my mind, so if you haven't seen it, you def gotta watch it. BR and BR 2049 are my favorite movies ever. They're super artistic and well written, 2049 is straight up the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. They're pretty heady and slow tho, so its probably not something to watch with the fam.
PVV Gang 1. I'm from Chicago but go to school in more Central Illinois and its barely snowed but there's been some 2. Three movies I suggest are: Se7en, Casablanca, and City of God All very different movies but all some of my favorites
Great video! Love your content. Im from Bergen, Norway. We have had some snow the last couple of weeks, But its about to rain away… 3 movies i love: Call me by your name, Eyes Wide Shut and Malcolm & Marie!
It has not snowed where I’m at and prolly won’t. Livin in Texas we don’t get much of that anyways lol. But give these 3 a try; John Q, the unforgivable, and Superbad
Out here in Minneapolis at the U and it’s finals week but ur vids are getting me thru it. Just had a blizzard few days ago so it’s a winter wonderland way up north here, lovin it. Movie rec: Magnolia, Almost Famous
Amazing video as always man, and its easily the most important thing to any fit and its essential to understand them to a tea. And i think a good movie to watch with your family or S/O is My neighbor totoro or most of the studio ghibli films being so bright and wholesome and overall amazing ass films And where i live hast not yet snowed and never will being in a tropical Island😔😔😔
Been hard to find clothing that actually fits and looks good on me. Short legs, short arms, and big thick legs, ass, and arms/chest. Most of the time I just throw on a graphic tee or a basic boxy tee and some joggers, but really want to try wearing different things. I used to be big into skinny jeans, but that was before I started lifting. Nowadays, I can't find any jeans that I can actually fit into without looking ridiculous. People in my circles love stores like Uniqlo and their EZ pants and more modern cuts, but whenever I try these on, the waist might fit well but the leg area that is supposed to be big and loose ends up being tight on my thighs. Truly a frustrating experience... lol
#PostVidVid task force member here dropping some fav Xmas films in no particular order 1. Eyes wide shut (1999) love the dreamlike meandering of the film. Interesting takes on fidelity and the upper class. 2. Tokyo godfathers (2003) has all the elements of a classic Christmas film, interesting to see it from one of the great anime directors 3. Brazil (1985) man this is a true masterpiece. It’s based on George Orwell's 1984, and is a commentary on capitalism. Definitely hit home with the perspective on toxic work culture. Also the set design is incredible
#POSTVIDGANG 1) Luckily no snow yet, I live in Atlanta, GA 2) 3 Movies I would recommend…. Tenet, Knives Out, Ford vs Ferrari was pretty good Piece out bro!! ✌️
New sub here! I watched the entire video hoping you'd speak on shorter people and fit suggestion. I'm 5'7 athletic build and was wondering what you'd recommend for proportions?
@@DrewJoiner Any style tips for us guys who are on the shorter side? Id love to rock baggier pants and light/dark contrasts but it seems to not complement my body type
it all comes down to preference - straight fitting pants, more loungewear type pants, fabrics with more give it all depends on what you are looking for
I’m 5’2” (120) so finding clothes that fit my height and style (just slightly more masc) is ridiculously hard. I struggle most with finding coats that aren’t too long, cuz everything I like style wise was made for a full grown man. I also was super disappointed when I found out that the Dickies straight cut slacks we too narrow for my thighs, I had no mobility at all. If this sounds anything like you, plz feel free to reply with some pointers or brands that have worked for you
I'm not five two, but my best advice would be to find fashion influencers of similar height to you and look at their clothing sources. You may not like their style but atleast you'll have small directory of brands that cater to you. Also, if you can find an affordable tailor or seamstress close to you, then buy what fits you otherwise and get it altered for height and fit. Hope these helped!
Do you shop in the kid's/youth sections? I'm 5'0", so they tend to be the only departments I can shop in. If you buy from Asian brands online, they also tend to run smaller then US sizes, so that might be a good area to look into as well, if you wanted to shop online.
This is absolutely the most important part of fashion in my opinion. It isn’t how expensive the pieces are, or how cheap they are.

And I just wanted to say I was shocked when you said you lived in Colorado cause I also live in Colorado. Anyways keep up the great work on all the videos.
Did you see boulder on the news today crazy
@@DrewJoiner Yes it was scary
Post vid vid gang! Love your videos man, keep up the good work.
The rule of thirds is also a thing in music. The proportion lines up with the so-called "Golden ratio." It's supposedly all over Debussy's music, it's certainly all over Bartok's.
the unforgivable, end of watch, and concrete cowboy are my suggestions
I'm from South Africa it doesn't snow this side. 3 Movies: Columbus, Arrival and Mulholland Drive
Great recommendations
Fav movies I recommend atm r:
1. Akira
2. Parasite
3. Uncut Gems
And nah it hasn’t snowed here yet☹️
Great list of movies tbh !!
@@DrewJoiner thx! These r the ones I thought of at the top of my head, I’ll edit the comment if I find a better one
They're pretty heady and slow tho, so its probably not something to watch with the fam.
yes
omg i got the best burst of positivity at 8:50 THANK U
Will doooo💫
PVV Gang
1. I'm from Chicago but go to school in more Central Illinois and its barely snowed but there's been some
2. Three movies I suggest are: Se7en, Casablanca, and City of God
All very different movies but all some of my favorites
Great video! Love your content. Im from Bergen, Norway. We have had some snow the last couple of weeks, But its about to rain away… 3 movies i love: Call me by your name, Eyes Wide Shut and Malcolm & Marie!
Does it snow hard up there in Norway or was it light?
Not so often at the West coast Where im from, But up north and in the mountains there is a lot of snow!
@@tobiasjetmundsen4496 Norway is a place I want to visit one day
You should!

Movie rec: Magnolia, Almost Famous
Good luck on those finals man I hope it all turned out okay
You should watch Speed Racer. It's like an acid trip with cars for kids that's family friendly.
Instead of getting style inspiration that I don’t want to wear I’m just going to wear what I want but learn how to make it look good
I watch Scott pilgrim every year around the holidays
One of my favs
Omg this is so well explained
You should watch life aquatic , groundhog day or the royal tenembauns
bet added to my list
I loved this video! Great job. 👏🏼
i was waiting on this 💯W vid as always :) love ur content man
Curious your opinion on Kibbe Body Types and how it relates to fashion?
I think the postvidvid thing is too dope and ahead of it's time really. Keep grinding bro
Amazing video as always man, and its easily the most important thing to any fit and its essential to understand them to a tea.
And i think a good movie to watch with your family or S/O is My neighbor totoro or most of the studio ghibli films being so bright and wholesome and overall amazing ass films
And where i live hast not yet snowed and never will being in a tropical Island😔😔😔
I'm glad I came across this information
Truly a frustrating experience... lol
I never knew what these were but I guessed in the first couple seconds and was right.
You Smart
Yo I've been waiting for this video😄
❤️
amazing vid !!!!!!
this video was very necessary. kinda got me back on track
🤝💫
#PostVidVid task force member here dropping some fav Xmas films in no particular order
1. Eyes wide shut (1999) love the dreamlike meandering of the film. Interesting takes on fidelity and the upper class.
2. Tokyo godfathers (2003) has all the elements of a classic Christmas film, interesting to see it from one of the great anime directors
3. Brazil (1985) man this is a true masterpiece. It’s based on George Orwell's 1984, and is a commentary on capitalism. Definitely hit home with the perspective on toxic work culture. Also the set design is incredible
HAHA!! I love it ooo I have not seen any of these they have all been added to the list
3 movies I reccomend: Bladerunner 2049, No country for old men and 500 days of summer. They are my favs for sure
fire recommendations
Absolutely lovely
#POSTVIDGANG
1) Luckily no snow yet, I live in Atlanta, GA
2) 3 Movies I would recommend…. Tenet, Knives Out, Ford vs Ferrari was pretty good
Piece out bro!! ✌️
Love the list Frankie!!
New sub here! I watched the entire video hoping you'd speak on shorter people and fit suggestion. I'm 5'7 athletic build and was wondering what you'd recommend for proportions?
I don’t understand your question could you explain more specifically
@@DrewJoiner Any style tips for us guys who are on the shorter side? Id love to rock baggier pants and light/dark contrasts but it seems to not complement my body type
Your actual really good at this RUclips shit
Post vid vid gang gang
Anime movie suggestions:
Your Name
Weathering with you
'Monster' on Netflix, the Cudi documentary on amazon, and Moonlight.
Beside baggier pants, what are the recs for shorter, more athletic-built guys?
it all comes down to preference - straight fitting pants, more loungewear type pants, fabrics with more give it all depends on what you are looking for
I’m 5’2” (120) so finding clothes that fit my height and style (just slightly more masc) is ridiculously hard.
Another vid another banger ❤️
Well researched as always❤️👍
