As someone that is into the alternative music scenes, the wallet chain as an accessory is actually really common in fashions that are associated with hard music. (Rock, metal, etc) Usually, in fact, if you get plaid pants for punk style it often will come with a matching chain attached to it. Black creatives like Tyler being influential is not surprising as culture loves to borrow from outsider communities. Lots of elements of hip hop fashion are co-opted but to get a different example the football boot/blokecore trend is very much so apeing English working class fashion. The (football) Casual aesthetic does have strong white working class connotations, but in places like London often Casuals were often quite diverse due to football being a common hobby in immigrant neighbourhood. The formal streetwear trend definitely pulls from Casual style as a lot of that style was dressing in (often stolen) designer jackets with straight leg jeans and adidas trainers for shoeing someone in at the Champions League Final.

I also think the contrast in how that streetwear is presented is so interesting. For example, aspects of UK/football streetwear gained popularity within the U.S as early as 2019-2020 with more of a grime/football casual style with Nocta, Stone Island, Moose Knuckles, and Puma infiltrating trends mostly amongst suburban white kids as they were heavily influenced by Asap Rocky, who was basing himself with creatives in that space at the time and Skepta rose into Mainstream US consciousness with that wave of popularity. For the past 2 years, Black inner-city European streetwear has gained prominence globally, especially thanks to Corteiz and Nocta, but their influence outside the current trend of formal blokecore is slim in the United States but has completely taken over the European and Asian Market in addition to their grime style.

the underwear as outerwear trend often appeals to one body type (skinny, shorter torso'd/longer legged), which makes the boxer short variation more appealing for folks who want to participate. i do feel like miu miu fw23 (the show referenced a lot here for that trend) and the vibe it gave off fell into really great timing culturally, preceding barbie/barbiecore and after that "brat summer," which really plays off the similar "messy, party girl" attitude. really enjoyed the video, thanks for posting!

this was a fantastic video, your commentary is so insightful and got me reflecting my own fashion choices this year (and how lowkey not original i am lmao). on ur point of wallet chains, i personally have recently seen them in the alternative context. i remember during COVID when the E-boy/girl trend was at its height, fake wallet chains were everywhere, esp on tik tok. perhaps this maybe driving the more decorative aspect to them? I also have seen it in context of chicano street wear, usually paired with 3/4 baggy pants (another trend i’ve been seeing get really popular this year, esp at my art school). anyways great video, can’t wait to see more!
such a good video! a thought: could the resurgence of a more extreme underwear as clothing trend have anything to do with 00's skinny being in again? i feel like the body is apart of the accessory. ig you could say it always has been though. and i do believe that trends have slowed down a bit. there was a lot of discourse around "cores" and people starting to look the same. it's really exciting that people are becoming inspired again and adding personality to their fits, hopefully it inspires people to wear what they want! :)
@@HiiipowerHabits yeah, but also kind of heartwarming how we reconcile with certain aesthetics. Back in my day, wallet chains were seen as synonymous with cholos, white trash, ghettos. Bad news. My high school principal actually menaced with with expelling me if I didn’t remove my chain. That was back in… 1999 I believe. Fast forward to around 2005 onwards I was cringely remembering that chain and wallet. That wallet! It was a monster, big, fat, black leather with an iridescent skull on fire. Now I remember that wallet fondly for being a totally representative artifact of those times. And as a middle aged man, today, it’s quite interesting to see how my students are reappropriating those styles in ways that are really interesting.
Just a heads up Drew, it’s not London when you’re talking about football (soccer) shoes, that’s Northern Quarter in Manchester. 1:51 I live right by it, it’s a cool neighbourhood in the north of England.
@@DrewJoiner All good bro - keep up the good work with videos, I always enjoy it. For what it’s worth, I think quite a few British cities go under the radar with fashion. Everything I hear is about London but Manchester has a lot going for it, especially in Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Chorlton etc and I’ve always liked the fashion conscious people and subcultures in places like Bristol, Glasgow, Brighton etc. Chanel held their fashion show last year in the Northern Quarter in Manchester.
@@DrewJoiner Completely disagree, growing up in England everyone would wear football boots to school and that was the heat back then, and the resurgence isn't unique to Manchester at all. Secondly sambas etc have been a part of football ultra culture in england and the continent to a lesser extent for decades. (edit: those kids turning them into loafers isn't something I've seen and is in Manny yeah, and its dope)
No one asked, but here are my comments on a couple of things mentioned in the video: 1. Personally think other footwear beats sneakers in personal style and being fashionable, and yeah I have fully ditched sneakers, except when running. 2. Timbs are sick, but worn by so many people now that it has less personal style than ever. 3. Flats are nice, especially for the stinking hot summer days. 4. High calf boots are also worn by many, but there are a million variants, and as you said; it is easy to personalize. Sick trend. 5. Underwear as outerwear, just makes sense for hot summer days. It's basicly just short shorts. 6. "Wallet chains" can be functional, but these days it's just another way to add another detail, pretty sick. I personally use it for my pocket watch lol. 7. Personally didn't follow the olympics what so ever haha, but those fits are nice. 8. Brat was ok fashion whise, nothing special though imo. 9. Tyler the Creator fashion has only gotten better. Excited to see his future work. 10. Bag charms are fire, love the personalization of otherwhise blank bags. 11. Grillz are sick. An accessory many people aren't using, which makes it even better. 12. Red as a pop of color, gotta be one of my favorite trends in a while. Shoes and bags especially can make an outfit x2 better. 13. Pleated dress shorts are pretty cool. Dressing up while not dying of heatstroke. 14. Formal streetwear is great, but thats also bc I heavily fw formality. 15. Western moment was fantastic. Can't really ever get enough of that aesthetic. 16. Maximalist accessories is fire, but can be too much sometimes, mostly its only positive though.
I AM NOT WITH THE BRAT TREND AT ALLLLL maybe it just feel too juvenile and trashy for me but i cant be the only one that was not with this trend AT ALL FAM😭😭
One thing i like about 2024 is that it seems like the fashion trend is there isn’t really one like its not a particular style like we’ve seen in the past now its all about finding your own style and dressing however you want
I think a lot of the Timbs “hate” is surrounding the advent idea of mainly white middle class people “discovering” a trend that had already been around for years in black and urban spaces, and often were demonized or frowned upon when they were only in those initial spaces.
I'd be super interested in seeing your thoughts on the new wave of streetwear/athleisure. I'm definitely feeling the more "elevated" vibe right now, considering that streetwear started as kind of a middle finger to the high-collar suits and skirts of the upper/upper middle class.
Underwear as an accessory is kinda tuff cuz people been using it as a way to layer when sagging for ages but yuh I think using boxers etc as functional visual space works especially if your trying to balance color
I feel like formal streetwear is a reflection of this post-hip hop era where hip-hop's been replaced with dance pop as the #1 dominant pop music format. Five years ago I thought we'd never again see guys wearing blazer-style outerwear unless they were Sartorial types. Now I'm convinced we're going to see neckties come back in 2025
Hi Drew, great vid as always! PVV crew here. I’m a runner (three years going strong, CPH Half Marathon coming up woop) and I’m super curious to hear more about your opinion on where the athletic/performance wear style/fashion is going? I’m a HOKA girl and also been investing in SATISFY Running. SATISFY price points are high but so is the quality and aesthetic IMO. Also, Copenhagen is riddled with running clubs, especially our bakeries/coffee places. Another one is biking (bought a gravel bike this year, so much fun) and brands like Pas Normal Studios. I would love your take on it/a deeper dive. Thanks!
wallet chains aren't functional anymore because the nature/form of wallets have changed, a lot of people don't have bulky wallets with chain clips anymore and have slimmer cardholders, or in some instances, your phone is just your wallet
I’ve always pushed back against sneaker fashion. I have my chucks that I’ll break out every week or so, but cowboy or Chelsea or heritage boots are my every day shoe.
kay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kisluxs book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
Wallet chains were “in” during the ‘90s and 2000s so maybe they’re just emulating the same style before, since late ‘90s-Y2k fashion is trending right now. Gen X here lol.
One of the best vids you ever made man Love your fashion content and will continue to watch your content as long as it exists You’re what I consider to be a fashionable person
As someone who grew up in the 90s/2000s I love the y2k era. It might seem a lil weird seeing the younger generation reviving the trend but I support it.
Thanks for sharing your insight. I think you are one of the best fashion youtuber i’ve ever seen before. Cheer from Korea. Korean fashion lovers would love your video too.
Great vid bro! I think we are still in a quick pace with fashion trends, everything moves pretty quick. BTW, when's the Switzerland trip? Can't wait for the vlog.
the only sneaker i have worn for the past 15 years is converse. they have always been a casual, yet trendy staple in most counterculture fashions throughout the decades.
i don't know how old my guy is, but it seems like some of these "Trends" he's remarking on are just him growing, learning and seeing more of the world. I don't say this to be dismissive, it just feels like some of the things he's observing as trends are actually he and his peers maturing.
Personally, I agree and I do see personal style on the rise in 2024, but I think as long as consumerism is being promoted, fashion trends will never really die down. It's just something as a culture that we feel like we need, we must buy things to feel like we belong, we must participate in a trend to be a a part of the culture. That feeling of wanting to belong will never go away either. If a fashion trend dies down, it'll be simply to push a new item that we feel like we need in our wardrobe, thus creating a new fashion trend. Trends in itself will never really be "out of style".
Not surprised you saw the keychain trend in Japan! Keychains and itabags are a big thing in j-fashion and harajuku fashion (ex decora) + both are a big thing in the anime/manga community and have been so for many years! I wouldn't be surprised if the current bag chain trend has its roots in j-fashion and the anime community honestly 😊
my "trend" is dad hats. i got one primarily for the sun, but i realised that for me... it is a very functional piece, i wear it all the time. protects me from the sun when waiting for a bus on my way to work, stops my glasses getting totally covered when it's raining, stops my (very) long hair getting picked up by the wind... yeah.
I feel like the best trend is the personal style trend. Tbh, not everything in the zeitgeist will be for you so why pretend. However, doing the work to find out what deeply resonates with you fashion wise is so amazing because as Helen Bonam Carter said "I think everything in life is art, how talk, how you dress...." so you might as well make it into a painting that even if no one appreciates, you do.
only trend I really disliked this year was the narrow sunglasses trend - they're genuinely just way less functional than regular sunglasses and are much harder to style
#pvv I think trends feel like they have slowed b/c it feels like more of them are sticking around for a longer span of time. Or maybe the basis/main concept for a period of trends is around for longer but the pieces themselves are getting tweaked in slight ways so that there’s still a sense of novelty when the newest hot item hits the racks, but rarely things coming out of left field. Great vid Drew! & I’ve enjoyed the conversations you inspire/invite in the comments as well. Good work :)
I work in retail and On Cloud is about to be huger than ever for real. Right now it's mostly the older generations catching up to the hype but soon enough everyone is going to be looking for some Ons😂❤
I’m 50 and I’ve been a sneaker head since I was 11, so there’s no way I’d ever stop buying them. However over the past 5 years or so I’ve also added boots and loafers to my footwear collection. Tip for you - Don’t buy Dr Marten’s these days, switch to Solovair - better quality and they’re kinda the OG DM’s.
Watching such videos always makes me feel like I see a commentary on the present from the future. I say this since where I live (Denmark) most people (besides from Copenhagen) only adapt these trends approximately. 1/2 a year to a year after they have peaked online and in fashion communities. Am I the only one that gets the same?
Tyler is very interesting..I have always thought of his style as singular and completely his own, even though people still flock to Golf on Fairfax. What's cool about him Is, even though he and I dress totally different, I feel inspired by his choices and attention to detail.
I’m still wearing sneakers in 2024,never gonna go out of style for me my purchases always start a conversation where I’m at and I just have a small niche collection with only 2-3 hype shoes
Regarding the sneaker trend: I see adidas campus 2000s literally EVERYWHERE. I have them myself. They seem classic and nostalgic such as the samba etc. but they have a very different vibe imo. I live in Austria btw. So maybe it’s just a thing here. Loved the video btw! Keep up the great work 🫶🏽
I don't think fashion trends have slowed down but I definitely think that the general opinion on trends is changing, people will be most likely to point out and criticise when someone is following a trend and I don't really know if it's for the better. Having a personal style and wearing what feels right will forever be the best thing to do but trends still have a big impact on fashion especially for people trying to find who they are through their style !
RUclips randomly recommended this to me and I asolutely LOVED it! I forgot about the low profile Puma sneakers... I had a pair in 2005- brown and mint green accents, like a reverse color palette of mint chocolate chip ice cream... I LOVED them! 😍 They were so comfortable, and with my body type and feet, I felt more balanced, grounded, and stable in them. I could walk very swiftly and quickly when I needed to as well I wanna get a new pair of them soon! The calf boots and skirts look absolutely stunning! I'm in Canada- several hours north of New York, so similar-ish weather but colder lol. Despite being in a smaller community and not seeing that trend in my region, I could totally see myself giving it a try, modified of course for climate difference. The underwear as outerwear... don't even get me started... indoors and in your own home, fine, no problem. But in my region this summer- young women, teens, and girls wore nothing but bathing bottoms or underwear and a tshirt or sweatwhirt anywhere and everywhere, EVERY DAY. On my block, 5 and 6 year olds would ride their bikes, do cartwheels, play basketball, dance, etc with NO SHORTS OR PANTS ON!!! At grocery stores, teens wore oversized sweatshirts with brief-style underwear underneath. Women mowed their lawns in bikini bottoms and tank tops... I'm just gonna stop now lol Wallet chains and carabiners... we all did that in my region in the y2k years lol. The chains literally had nothing attached, they were simply "jean jewelry", like how someone would wear earrings or a necklace to accessorize. The carabiner was handy though for keys, and pouches for lip balm, a small amount of cash, etc- and the pouches were cute in my opinion back in the day! You're definitely right about the "core" trends and the individualized styles- I LOVE seeing everyone having the freedom to express themselves in the most individual ways possible. Literally, anything can look cool and be worn with confidence. This was so much fun, I really enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you! 😊
I also feel that 2024 is the year of the sheer Outfit. I know it started in 2023 but I goes on still. Ties in with the mesh ballerina but we can also see it in other clothing and I personally feel like its such an interesting way to add texture to an outfit and go on the next level in terms of layering. Many ppl shy away because they fear the see through material but it is honestly so versatile and can look awesome on top of an already existing more casual outfit.
A lot of people rewatched Sex & The City this year so I feel like that had a lot of influence on fashion this year for women. I think this fall the Twilight look will come in again... at least thats the vibe I will be redoing... :P
I’ve loved the Maryjane trend that’s going on. I think it’s a great shoe, especially for men who are stepping a bit out of their comfort zone. I also like the different variations: doc marten, vans, etc
Fashion now is so much about "aesthetic," and it's so fleeting. Many people don't know who they are, so they move from trend to trend as fast as a RUclips short video. People who are genuinely stylish don't operate this way, and it's tangible when you observe them. The core of these trends is also younger. In the 90s-2000s, tastemakers were generally older in their 30s with more money and established lifestyle. Now tik tok has it leaning in the 15-25 year age group. It's noticeable. Those are my thoughts. 😊
You missed some very important trends. The low rise jeans, the ide bottom jeans on woman. Long and wide trousers on men as well as the cropped or tight top(jackets included).

this was a fantastic video, your commentary is so insightful and got me reflecting my own fashion choices this year (and how lowkey not original i am lmao).
on ur point of wallet chains, i personally have recently seen them in the alternative context. i remember during COVID when the E-boy/girl trend was at its height, fake wallet chains were everywhere, esp on tik tok. perhaps this maybe driving the more decorative aspect to them? I also have seen it in context of chicano street wear, usually paired with 3/4 baggy pants (another trend i’ve been seeing get really popular this year, esp at my art school).
anyways great video, can’t wait to see more!
Drew always manages to perfectly encapsulate things in the fashion scene that I can't explain. Like its in my brain but not in words.
such a good video! a thought: could the resurgence of a more extreme underwear as clothing trend have anything to do with 00's skinny being in again? i feel like the body is apart of the accessory. ig you could say it always has been though. and i do believe that trends have slowed down a bit. there was a lot of discourse around "cores" and people starting to look the same. it's really exciting that people are becoming inspired again and adding personality to their fits, hopefully it inspires people to wear what they want! :)
Yes!! An in depth video about the streetwear landscape right now/how it’s shifted over time would be great.
Wallet chain trend returns from the mid and late 2000s when Ed Hardy and Affliction brands were in for the mainstream
They also were heavily used late 90s
@@LuisMercadoorg facts its funny how "new things" are just retro themes
Right? I was like “how old is Drew”? 🤔 because he didn’t mention that
which also returns from 2018 from the whole "eboy" aesthetic
Just a heads up Drew, it’s not London when you’re talking about football (soccer) shoes, that’s Northern Quarter in Manchester. 1:51 I live right by it, it’s a cool neighbourhood in the north of England.
Great correction and context
The brand is just called On. Cloud is just a name they put on models using the CloudTec cushioning they invented.
Lovely vid as always!
New Yorker here, Timbs & Uptowns will always be timeless here
Im all in for formal streetwear 🤝🏼
No one asked, but here are my comments on a couple of things mentioned in the video:
Thank you for your opinionsss!!
About the wallet chins: This is a long trend in the Punk scene and as usual the trend gets adapted by the wanting to rebel yougth streetwear scene
I AM NOT WITH THE BRAT TREND AT ALLLLL maybe it just feel too juvenile and trashy for me but i cant be the only one that was not with this trend AT ALL FAM😭😭
You must be old
@@kiwimike2330or they aren’t a kid
30 min plus Drew video?
Hell yeah!
by far the best fashion channel on yt, thanks Drew for another amazing video
Underwear as an accessory is kinda tuff cuz people been using it as a way to layer when sagging for ages but yuh I think using boxers etc as functional visual space works especially if your trying to balance color
I’m not part of any of these cultures but it’s great that you’re providing a window into them, thanks!
Thank you for including women's fashion too, I always loved to watch your videos, but now it's even more reliable :)
Suchhhhhh a good video Drew, loved it!
Oh dear, so many trends from when I was a teenager/ in my twenties 😅 The boots, the wallet chains...I rocked both though 😌
Congratulations
yesss talk in more detail about formal streetwear!!!!!
its always a good day when drew drops a new video
Wallet chains were “in” during the ‘90s and 2000s so maybe they’re just emulating the same style before, since late ‘90s-Y2k fashion is trending right now. Gen X here lol.
One of the best vids you ever made man
Love your fashion content and will continue to watch your content as long as it exists
You’re what I consider to be a fashionable person
As someone who grew up in the 90s/2000s I love the y2k era. It might seem a lil weird seeing the younger generation reviving the trend but I support it.
I'm completely out of the loop in terms of fashion but when you mentioned on cloud I recognised the brand because all my runner friends love them lmao
Formal streetwear sounds interesting, I'd like to hear more about it
Thanks for sharing your insight.
Soon!!🇨🇭 thank you bro
attack the idea not the individual
💯💯 well said
Second: Secondary
Third: Tertiary
the only sneaker i have worn for the past 15 years is converse. they have always been a casual, yet trendy staple in most counterculture fashions throughout the decades.
Great Video Drew! Keep it up🔥
Drew the vibram sole on the football shoes is so hard 😭 I love that look
i don't know how old my guy is, but it seems like some of these "Trends" he's remarking on are just him growing, learning and seeing more of the world. I don't say this to be dismissive, it just feels like some of the things he's observing as trends are actually he and his peers maturing.
@DrewJoiner-1 i don't know if woon is insulting or complimentary 😅, but either way i love your stuff and hope my ish didn't come across wrong
Bro I live in Minnesota
every year we break out the timb boots & carhartt jackets to stay warm & fashionable. Pair of wheats & all blks are mandatory
Tennis is having a growing fashion influence too
ON has already done it, The cloud 5s are up next
I like the porco rosso wallpaper. A man of culture indeed
Love this video - amazingly researched and you did a great job. I can see Saucony getting big this year too.
my "trend" is dad hats. i got one primarily for the sun, but i realised that for me... it is a very functional piece, i wear it all the time. protects me from the sun when waiting for a bus on my way to work, stops my glasses getting totally covered when it's raining, stops my (very) long hair getting picked up by the wind...
As a car enthusiast the samba, and speedcat shoes are both top picks for me. excellent driving shoes while still being comfortable as a daily wear.
The brown miu mius sneakers look insane
only trend I really disliked this year was the narrow sunglasses trend - they're genuinely just way less functional than regular sunglasses and are much harder to style
Good work :)
brat was such a forced trend
I loved it as a charli xcx fan from before but I was thinking do all these people really like her bc the genre was so niche and “weird”
It was necessary and it was the effect that we're seeing since Sophie has passed. RIP
Although I can see why you see that, it put me off a little when people were just following the trend when she has always put out great albums
ill never forget when people clowned me under one of your videos for saying that sneakers are on the decline a few years ago 😢
Tip for you - Don’t buy Dr Marten’s these days, switch to Solovair - better quality and they’re kinda the OG DM’s.
definitely wanna see you cover formal streetwear
Watching such videos always makes me feel like I see a commentary on the present from the future. I say this since where I live (Denmark) most people (besides from Copenhagen) only adapt these trends approximately. 1/2 a year to a year after they have peaked online and in fashion communities. Am I the only one that gets the same?
I've noticed high waisted trousers coming back, with pleats. Seen a few celebrities rocking them
@DrewJoiner-1 What does he win, Bob!?
i used to wear wallet chains in the 90s and love to see it back. it’s a cool accessory
22:50 I'm looking formal to Formal Streetwear trend... hopefully Drew could make a whole new video about this trend
I'm just gonna stop now lol
Wallet chains and carabiners... we all did that in my region in the y2k years lol.
Thank you! 😊
I feel like wallet chains as purely aesthetic accessories have been around for 4-5 years - or at least I remember looking it up back then
Very informative video, Drew. Thanks
Love how the rest of the world is finally catching up to Japans/East Asias keychain and plushie on your bag thing. It’s looks so fun.
Its not race bait to say factually that Tyler and Pharrells style is because theyre black. They bring black culture as black people to their style.
