      did you know you could use sonys lens cap/body cap for custom white balancing. it actually is the specific grey required for white balancing and that was a deliberate design decision by sony. try it next time ;-)

    Another tip when using auto white balance is to lock it when you're happy with it. I have a custom button set to lock/unlock on white balance.

    Interesting... always used white for a white balance but now you have convinced me to use a grey card when it comes to the skin tones - definitely looks better! Also one more thing: for the auto you can set the priority in settings to the "white" and then tweak colors (mine are set for B+0.5 and M+0.5).

    While I do love setting a Custom white balance, sometimes (as you mentioned) for long clips in areas where I do not control the lighting (mostly run and gun) I prefer using Auto W/B. Imagine events where a couple is sitting under a neutral light and then you pan towards an audience member who is sitting under a completely different light. I found that for long takes the previous Sony auto W/B worked decent (definitely usable) and if I want to do a highlights clip where there is no panning, just a cut between the 2, I can match them much easier because the W/B changed in camera. I had very few shots where I had to keyframe my W/B in post to match it changing (and it wasn't difficult to do, only tiny increments). Now if I were to set a W/B for just the couple, then in post the footage of the audience member would require massive changes in W/B which would definitely show and look bad.
    And with these being said, I would like to ask about those "extra" auto W/B options that we got with the a7S III that we didn't have in previous models. I believe there are 2 or 3 "shockless" W/B settings and would like to ask you if you have played around with them? what has changed from the previous generation?

    This topic drives me crazy. :D
    I use an A7R III and there is a very strange behaviour. If I shoot RAW images, I can use WB temperatures only, colours are accurate. As soon as I capture either JPG or MP4 (so having the camera interpret the image on its own), the camera starts to shift the tint towards magenta.
    Coming to Sony, I always heard people complain about green tint but somehow my former A7 II managed this a lot better then 3rd generation bodies (both the regular 7 and 7R series Mk III).

    Thanks for the tutorial! One thing I've noticed. I have a couple Memory Recall Settings saved for the two configurations I will use the most, and strangely It doesn't allow for a custom WB. So I have to leave the Memory Recall setting back to Video, do the custom white balance, take note of the Temperature, go back to the Memory Recall and set the Temp manually there in K... Seem a bit silly, am I missing something here?

    What’s your process for setting white balance when you’re using bi-color lights and filming in a corporate area with overhead lights you can’t turn off? Do you do a custom white balance for the environment (overhead lights) and then do it again once you turn on your lights on and set them to the proper Kevin?

  • @katiebunn

    Very helpful! I see you're using the DataColor Gray card, which is $50 and has those white-to-black squares. Is there a benefit of using that instead of using a solid color 18% gray card? I see those for much cheaper, including with the 24 colors on the other side. I don't inherently mind paying a little more to get a much better result, but no one wants to spend more than they need to haha. Sorry if it's a newbie question, I'm very new to all this lol. Thank you again for the video, very much appreciate it.

  • @ifrtutor
    @ifrtutor 2 года назад +2

    Great tutorial. But I'm using the A7S. Menus are completely different. When I select a custom WB and choose right, I get the colour matrix thing with A-B and G-M settings. Says 5600k but apart from adjusting the colour grid I don't see any way of making an adjustment to the kelvin value. So it's always on 5600K! Normally I shoot in video mode with manual exposure. Is there something I'm missing?

    • @CaseyHardman
      @CaseyHardman 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, this is extremely dumb and I feel like we’re being punished for using Sony’s built-in features. The only options are to use the white balance lock while using auto, or just not use the memory modes, which is probably the better option so you don’t accidentally “unlock” back to auto.

    • @IanSnape

    For white balance, couldn't it be good to use it with a grey card, then use the white balance lock for video for short scenes where the conditions don't change? seems easier than the custom white balance no? especially if you don't have to save constant new custom white balance. • @sebastianbalog
      @sebastianbalog Год назад

      Hi Harv, white ballancing in post is better than not white ballancing at all but it's one thing to ballance off a white or grey evenly exposed card vs picking a white point on your shirt which could be too bright or too dark for a correct white ballance. I white ballance before and even after use the picker on the color chart to slightly correct the wb that the camera has set. There is always a slight difference.

      It’s called custom white balance quick tips, suggesting that it’s more than just a ‘how to set a custom white balance’ video (of which I have also made exactly that video ruclips.net/video/kff2O8doRG4/видео.htmlsi=5zRhAXN7kU-uosgd). Honestly you could also just use the timestamps, it’s not difficult man 😂

    I can tell you used a grey card, your videos have a green/blue tint to it,so I would NOT recommend using a grey card,use a white card,it gives you a less awful colors

      There’s actually no tint, what you’re seeing is that almost everything around me is naturally blue/green. My skin tones are accurate (bearing in mind I’m a pasty Brit!), I get that colour is subjective too so you’re probably one of many that doesn’t enjoy the colour in my videos and that’s fine. But awful…well that’s just not a fact is it 😂

      Well I'm telling you your videos do have a green/blue and I use to use a grey card and there's a color shift twords cyan color on the white balance graph on the camera,so your saying camera graph is wrong and unacrate🤦‍♂️ And skin tone may look decent but everything else isn't, and that's why I stopped using a grey card because of the color shift😂

      But everything else in the background is blue/green, the curtains, the cushions, the way the room is decorated. I’m not going to change these colours in post because they’re meant to be that way, for me skin tone accuracy trumps all else so I’m always going to prioritise that

    The best way to get white balance with Sony: don’t shoot with Sony unless you’re using an a7siii.

      Thank you for this video all the videos. What about using an ND filter? I’ve been told to greycard set WB with the ND filter on.
