Woman Living in a Tiny House Loves the Small Space & Financial Freedom

  • Christine is a dental assistant who decided that she wanted to live in a tiny house for three reasons: because she likes small, cozy spaces, because she wanted to be comfortable financially, and because she wanted to have a smaller environmental footprint.
    Her ex-husband George built her tiny house after she committed to the project by buying a $6000 CAD trailer. The tiny house is built with extended roof trusses which double as the home's framing. The insulation is a combination of rigid foam insulation and spray foam insulation.
    She has a Nature's Head composting toilet but if she could do it again she'd set up a dry toilet to make cleaning it out easier (the Nature's Head is bulky and awkward to carry outside for emptying compared to a 5-gallon bucket).
    For heat over the winter, hot water, and cooking she uses propane, and she hopes to have solar panels installed at her next location for electricity so she'll be fully off the grid. For now Christine has parked her tiny house in the backyard of a friend for the first year, and after that she's looking to find a tiny house community of like minded people.
    While the idea of living in a house that is technically illegal (where it's currently parked), Christine is still very happy with her investment, with her home, and with her lifestyle. Living tiny has allowed her to live a simple life with fewer expenses; and that makes her happy.
    Thanks for watching!

      Kudos to the both of them for choosing to get along! Many times we forget that it is ok to want different things, it doesn’t make one or the other a bad person! Couples who do want different things should never have to choose who has to miserable... it’s perfectly wonderful to part ways & continue to want the best for the other person (please note that I am not getting into other areas such as adultery, abuse, or financial woes… I’m only talking about people who can leave a relationship on friendly terms… sad I even have to make a disclaimer but there you go)💗

    Tiny homes like that are "illegal" because they can't be taxed. Let's be honest - the more we find ways to live off the land and less off of the government, the more restrictions they will create to expand their reach. That's why there are restrictions with farming, using rain water, solar panels, cannabis, etc.
    Even though tiny living is not for me, I love watching videos like this to get more storage ideas and ways to live off the land to save as much €$£ as possible! I really enjoyed this video with Christine's candor and her peaceful voice. Thanks so much for sharing!! ❤️

    • @ImaginedAsKIDZ
      @ImaginedAsKIDZ 5 лет назад +24

      @PandawdyBob It boils down to if the home can or cannot be taxed. If it can, there are certain codes/restrictions the homeowner must adhere to - which creates a bit of a taxation trail so the government can make money via taxes accordingly.

    • @ImaginedAsKIDZ
      @ImaginedAsKIDZ 5 лет назад +67

      @Bev Webs - I apologize if you feel I was being a hater. I'm not hating on this woman's tiny home. Honestly, I think it's awesome and super cute. I'm hating on the fact that the government has grown so large that this woman's home is deemed "illegal" - solely because it can't be taxed, and it's a shame. Tiny homes, in my opinion, can be a solution to homelessness, but since they can't be taxed...

      I have a house of 1300 sf...I can assure you, we use every part of it. I have nothing 'stored'. My family of four would not be happy living with less space. I can easily get rid of stuff, but we could not do with less space.

      @Jaime Alonzo Luckily our house uses space very well. We have a finished basement and 3 bedrooms, and well-made closet space. We also have 1/2 acre of land so the kids have plenty of room to play outside. The only thing I would change is my garage...it's too small to really work as a garage (the house was build in the 40s), so I would love to remodel it as a den. Not sure I'll ever get the chance but for now, our house works pretty well for our little family.

      My son is a firefighter. I believe a lot of the tax issues aren’t necessarily greed driven but perhaps more practical. When we live in a city or town our taxes pay for basic utilities, public services (police, fire,rescue) and road maintenance. Schools etc also are part of a community and add to the tax bill. So perhaps having people living in a town and paying some sort of land tax might help.

      Why should Seniors and Amish pay for families living with 6 or more kids, using property owners to pay their school bills? Every renter with children should have to contribute to their kids education. They should have it taken from their taxes and wages. If you are on welfare you should be required to work at the school your children attend until you are legitimately working and pay for your kids. Seniors, disabled vets and disabled individuals should be exempt from school taxes (unless they are continuing to create school age children). People like you piss me off. Almost every person I have seen on RUclips, doing this, is living on borrowed land, essentially squatting, not paying their way, and bragging the virtues of tiny-home, tax free living, all the while living on land that someone else is taxed on. As I said, this lady is staying where she is temporarily, but a lot of single, younger people, living in tiny homes, living the van life, and being nomadic, extol the beauty of the way they live, sticking it to the man, and genuinely thinking that they're creating a new and better way, all the time, living on the charity of those that let them squat.

      Exactly! The system is outrageous. Being homeless is illegal, van life is illegal but it’s legal for you to pay $1000 or more for a one bedroom apartment. That’s absolutely insane. There needs to be some kind of rent control enforced in the U.S. There’s no reason that an apartment should cost more than owning a home.

    Hi my name is Leslye. And I am a dental assistant. Retired now. I was forced into retirement due to health reasons. But not long after that I discovered tiny living. I was looking for a way to live cheaper since I was under 50 yrs when I had to stop working. You are a very smart lady. You have secured you financial future. Having a home paid for means a lot as we age. I ended up buying a little land and we are converting a barn. Your home is beautiful. Looks very comfortable. Don’t let anyone tell you your home is illegal. You spent hard earned money on it and are living well. You pay your taxes so why should anyone have the right to tell you that a home has to be a certain size. This war on tiny homes needs to stop because plenty of people are buying the homes being built. And if they want to pay for a big home it’s their business just as it’s your to live tiny. A home is a home no matter the size. I hope you never encounter any problems. Enjoy your home. Leslye

    • @andrewmcgibbon9785
      @andrewmcgibbon9785 4 года назад

      She touches on the major issue when she talks about having to go around the house and wipe down condensation off of walls and windows. AIR QUALITY.
      This home is probably only about 120-140 square feet. If it were an empty box it would maybe be 1024 cubic feet of air space. When filled with furniture, appliances fixtures household equipment etc. its probably down to 750-800 cubic feet of air. With windows and doors closed and a furnace running, that is not enough air for even one person. With just one person inside the air quality probably drops to dangerous levels after 8-10 hours with the windows and doors closed.
      That humidity she wipes off of surfaces is from her breathing. The building codes in most areas dictate a minimum square footage of around 650 square feet to insure safe air quality without having forced ventilation.

    High five Christine for your creative solution to a problem that too many people are facing - how to find decent affordable housing. Tiny houses were the norm back in the day. Easy to afford, clean, heat. We're going back to that because no one can afford anything in this country anymore. Greed is the new motivator and the new mindset regarding housing in this country. The USA is becoming a place of greed and making a fast buck off the backs of the disadvantaged with outrageous housing prices. It's comments like those of MOMof2 that displays what's wrong with this country. Stupidity , greed and arrogance is driving this country into the ditch.

      @JAlvisllc 6 лет назад +12

      The high humidity is mainly related to the structure being too tight. Positive air would would solve that. A wood stove would need an air intake for sure. Really like the truss idea.

    • @JAlvisllc
      @JAlvisllc 6 лет назад +6

      There are other options other then an HRV. Opening high in the structure would be my suggestion but its important to have a proper bath fan/window and range vent. I wouldn't recommend a hot roof either. A well insulated vented roof with say Tongue and Groove instead of drywall would also be a good option. Full time living in such a small space will always have its challenges. I would want fresh air just to feel healthy.

    • @JAlvisllc
      @JAlvisllc 6 лет назад +7

      Theres lots of variable and more then one option. HRV is just one of many. Countries like Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland use interior membranes that surpass our structures. They use passive systems and have harsh winters. As Americans we are always buying a product like an HRV but its not always necessary.

      Raynee, have you considered housing options in Michigan? See video 'Detroit makes housing affordable with tiny houses' & related videos. Detroit is actively pursuing (tiny) housing alternatives on solid foundations for low income families.
      It's my belief that houses below a certain minimum square footage are illegal for the sheer reason that they generate far less revenue for governments in the form of property tax, & for big utility companies in the form of heating/cooling bills, etc. This lady, by her own admission, pays only about $70 every 2 months for propane. And when she eventually commits the 'crime' of going off-grid....you can figure out how many corporate pockets she'll stop lining.

    I'm loving these videos! what a nice story and I really hope that Christine will have a great life in that tiny house! I ended up going in a similar but yet different direction myself. I live in the third largest city in Sweden (read: "it's a small city") ;). But I opted for a tiny apartment of 21m2 (226 square feet). I saved up and bought it cash and now I can enjoy a minimalistic lifestyle in a beautiful transformable space with all modern comforts one could think of (hot shower, flush toilet, internet, recycling etc.). Everything is included in the rent (internet, tv, phone, insurance, electricity, heating, recycling etc) with a total of 140$/mo. This will increase by 1-2$ every year (to keep up with inflation), but all in all, the rent will never weigh me down financially. I am super happy with finding a space like this which enables me to do so much more with life other than working in order to pay for your living. It's great! Thanks for a truly inspiring youtube channel! I absolutely love these videos. Great source of inspiration.

      I saw this neat idea recently...build 2 tiny houses. One for the kids rooms & the other for the adults & living areas. They attached theirs yet they could detach them to move or for later. This single mom had twins so could leave one to each child in the future too at least get them on their feet if they preferred not to live the lifestyle. Just a thought for a little inspiration ;)

      Patriot Jefferson - I hope nobody has any problems but I still agree with her statement. Maybe if more people decided to live more modestly, simply and within their means like this woman, housing/zoning laws will have to be adjusted to get with the times...it's ridiculous that it's 'illegal' to live like this (quietly, with self sufficiency and within one's means) but smoking pot is legal...I agree that she shouldn't go quietly...that's WAY cool!

    But 'legally' it's not a house. It's a vehicle that is designed to be moved (it does have wheels, no?) Do you have to register it annually? If so then, there's the greedy governments' tax!
    It's just awesome regardless.

    • @Sushiyrolls

      Daniella Thoelen, I think they(tiny houses) are paying tax through a rent for the land, sales tax from the purchase of the house and all the purchasing she will make for her living and leisure activities, income tax from the work they can keep because of the safer and healthier living set-up (better than less ideal set-up for each individual). Living tiny houses pays tax way more than living on the street. Tiny dwellers pay just enough tax, not overpaying (well, I know...I know... ). What I want to say is that taxpayers and governments need to recognize tiny dwellers are contributors of the society, not the freeloaders.

I just have a composting bucket myself, had a natureshead in the last one and it was a bit to lift and dump out. I too hope to find a small community of like minded tiny dwellers. I have mine on a recreation lot but its secluded and would like "friends" closer by.

    I'm retired and divorced for ten years and have been kicking around the idea of one of these "small" houses. My daughter is a senior in college and will be making her own way in life. Property to set one up isn't an issue with thirteen acres paid for years ago. Probably the only things I would do different than the lady in this video is having a more stable and possibly permanent foundation. A well for water and septic system have already been installed and in use for years. Those are the "pros." The "cons" are of course the very small living area and storage. Having a "tiny home" is a possibility, but not yet a "probability." Making such a commitment is definitely going to probably seal the deal on "single" living for the rest of my time on Earth, because it will take one very special woman willing to deal with small living. But, at this point, the likelihood of having a tiny home is a greater possibility than starting a whole new relationship. Food for thought certainly...and of course, possibly having one hell of a yard sale lol. I must say though, that tiny living is an attractive idea with having a retiree's fixed income. Time will tell...
