    This was a really fun episode, thanks, Judy! A few of my memories about the backlot sound, wow, always a challenge! Of course, there were the planes. In those days there were no noise regulations, no limit on noise levels from those darn engines. Burbank Airport was just 2 miles away and most of the time those jets would take off to the South, putting them directly overhead! When shooting a scene it was imperative to pay attention to our on-set Sound Mixer Bill Flannery while filming a scene when aircraft could be heard approaching. We'd always look to Bill for a thumbs up, which meant keep going, or a 'no' nod of his head, which meant to Cut. I have a deep respect for Bill, he's in heaven now with the sound of Angels. I've commented on paying off the neighbor behind the house with the noisy lawn mower which magically came to life when we began shooting, but there were so many other challenges, for instance, other shows shooting close by. I recall one crazy day when "Police Woman" was on Western Street. They were filming one of those chaotic scenes where everyone was shooting at everyone else... and we had to cut a few times due to the sound of gunfire..actually "pops" from blanks. I finally walked to their set, spoke with the AD, and got us both on the same radio channel so we wouldn't be in conflict shooting simultaneously, it was the respectful thing to do, for both of us. Another challenge were the Motorola Beepers the crew carried... it was necessary to make sure everyone on set have their Beepers on 'Silent Mode' while shooting a scene, especially when on the Stage. Then we had the 'Turkey' issue during the short time they were used instead, or with, the Chickens. Every time we went on a Bell those darn Turkeys would cry out with a loud 'Gobble-Gobble"! We'd have to wait for the cacophony to settle before the Director could say 'Action"...and, of course, there was that Peacock of David's who, along with his 'Peacock Stand-in', would 'Shreik" at the most inappropriate time. They were beautiful but Loud!! A quick note on Wardrobe...the few times I appeared on camera I wore John-Boy's clothes...Richard and I were the same size! And as to commuting, I never realized you had such a long drive, Judy. I could spit on the set from my bedroom and Kami was almost as close :)

    Thank you for allowing us a chance to experience this amazing series through your eyes. Considering the high ratings of The Waltons, was there any consideration given to the idea of a spinoff series? I think Mary Ellen as a rural nurse could have been great. Also, Mary Ellen and Erin in the city would have been interesting.

    • @docadams7099

      I understand there was a proposed spinoff called "The Godseys", but the idea was simply discarded. I also seem to remember that the first two 1982 "Waltons Mountain" movies could have led to a spinoff, but the third one ("A Day For Thanks on Waltons Mountain") was done as a finale. It was another 11 years before the 1990s movies.

I would hear horror stories about LA traffic, experienced it a few times. We kinda have it here now in the San Francisco bay area. So you didn't usually have breakfast in those early days of the Waltons, perhaps it was a good thing. You were practicing intermittent fasting and didn't even know it. I can't imagine any teens ready to work at 6:15 a.m.! You Walton's really are special! Up before the roosters! 😊 My dear Grandma lived in a tiny bungalow in the heart of our city's Little Italy. There was a step down from the dining room to the old-fashioned farm like kitchen. Being very young, I thought all Grandmas had a step like that! So, seeing similar in The Walton's house was just perfect, magical for me. She also had a "secret" pull up door with ladder stairs that led to the basement! And an outside cellar entrance with two large metal doors set slanted against the back of the house. It was all magical. That coat Marcia and several of you wore was so authentic! You all were good sports to participate in game shows. Who hasn't wanted a desk near the front window like John Boy's? I wonder how many were inspired by him to better study their schoolwork. How many U S. States have you visited, Judy? Which states would you like to see? I hope you visit Pennsylvania! 😊🧡Bless Walton's everywhere!

Funny about the clothes: I just rewatched "The Ordeal" and, for the very first time, I found myself drawn to the blouse that Rachel/Aimee Godsey was wearing in a scene with Kami. It was pinkish with a big white, rounded collar. Then I thought, "Hey! That looks exactly like the blouse/shirt Jim Bob was getting teased about wearing in a much earlier episode!" Judy, thank you so much for the information you provide in your videos. I watched The Diploma ,yesterday which is one of my favorite episodes featuring your character. My question is was the character of nurse Nora, based on Mr.Hamner's aunt? I wish you and your family a beautiful spring.

    • @judynorton2598
      @judynorton2598  Год назад +1

      Interesting question. I never heard Nora was based on Earl’s Aunt. Not sure if he had an Aunt who was a nurse.

    • @michaelcdavis7047
      @michaelcdavis7047 Год назад +1

      Earl Hamner's paternal Aunt Nora was the first public health nurse in the state of Virginia. She was known for treating tuberculosis patients in the state. I wonder if the writers used that disease for Olivia 's storyline. Sadly, Earl's Aunt passed away in 1971,but her career as a nurse lives on in The Waltons. Judy, thank you so much for these videos, and I am looking forward to watching The Easter Story, I cannot believe it is fifty years old this April. Best wishes to you and your family.

    The sports competition, that you, Martha, Eric, Tony, etc competed in was Star Games (season 2, 1985 or 1986) with Bruce Jenner, and Morgan Brittany as the hosts. I still have your episodes on VHS however, I don’t have a player anymore. I thought you guys did great and you were a fantastic swimmer. Hi Judy. Thank you again for another enlightening segment of ask Judy. The wardrobe. A modern day version of "who wore it best"?
    As you mentioned the details of preparing for work; I thought of how easy it can be for the audience to forget that fact. I remembered watching a Tina Turner interview. She was asked some questions about her feelings of her upcoming retirement. If she had any regrets. Don't quote me, but she basically stated that while the audience is having a good time, dancing etc, she's on stage working. She was tired. Rightfully so. I mean, she had so much energy. Hours on that stage is beyond the equivalent of a good workout. Thank you for your hard work Judy. We are still reaping the benefits of it in 2023. Thank all of you.

I guess, some of us, ;) thought it was just as it was, on TV! :) You all, really did make it real, and I LOVED the show, and watched for it every week! I still watch it, every chance I can, because it reminds me of my grandparents, and how we ran around in our bare feet, and just played outside!

    Growing up in a poor family of 13, I was the youngest of 4 boys. It was very rare for me to receive any new clothes. Hand-me-downs was the norm. I was really small for my age. That still holds true. At the age of 65, I still wear boys size 16 Husky; at just 5'1" and 130lbs. Thanks, Judy, for your videos. I really enjoy them.

    About costumes ~ was there a general warehouse of clothing or were there seamstresses who sewed for the show? Did a costumer scrounge vintage shops in the area? That coat you showed really looked authentic. Can you share with us more about wardrobe? I always thought JB looked handsome in his argyle sweater, knickers, and cap! Do you have a fashion era you like best? You could wear bias-cut gowns from the '30s very well! I'm waiting for those colonial gowns with the frames that stuck out on either side ~ great for hiding figure flaws! 😅

    • @judynorton2598
      @judynorton2598  Год назад +3

      There was the Warner Bros wardrobe dept which was huge and full of costumes from over the decades of shows and films done at the studio. Our costumers could pull from there and they established a supply of clothing for our show. Over the seasons items were changed out as we grew and as the time period changed from 30’s to 40’s. Some of the girls dresses were made for us, or altered as needed - so I’m not sure if those seamstresses were Warner Bros employees of Lorimar’s (our production company). I’ve always loved 40’s fashions.

    I will have to give enormous credit to set designers and staff for their very accurate furnishing of the many sets on the waltons. From the Spool beds in the bedrooms to the various tools in the mill, all were things i saw growing up in a rural country home in Appalachia (many can be found in my home today). You just dont see this much detail in tv and movies today.
