About:
Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) has it all-a great job running her own trendy magazine and part ownership of a fancy brownstone. Sharing the ownership of their home is her endearingly naïve cousin Synclaire (Kim Coles) who's also Khadijah's assistant at the magazine. Their third roommate is a sarcastic, selfish fortune hunter Regine (Kim Fields). And even though she doesn't live in the brownstone, Khadijah's best friend, Maxine (Erika Alexander)-a tough, aggressive divorce attorney always searching for Mr. Right-spends more time here than she does in her own home. With love, laughter and a little bit of luck, four women in New York City on the threshold of the rest of their lives hilariously celebrate Living Single.

My #1 fav black sitcom because the writing is SO GOOD.
Friends still doesn't give credit even though they sold the idea from Living Single.

Unpopular opinion: Living Single was an entertaining show and I do prefer it over Friends but some of the characters on here were insufferable such as Kyle and Maxine. They were just so arrogant and stubborn.

It came out one year earlier before Friends.
The story goes that the EP at NBC saw the pilot for the show and was quoted as saying that he regrets not buying that show when he had the chance". While Friends aired a year later, that doesn't mean the pilot wasn't seen much earlier . The pilot could have been made a year earlier then the show aired.
No matter how it happened its clear that Friends ripped this show. There is literally no difference except that one cast is white and the other cast is black. If you watched this series from start to finish that much is crystal clear. It would be on thing if the EP at NBC didn't say anything but once he flapped his lips it was clear what happened. With that said I loved both Living Single and Friends so it worked out for me. lol @@targetegrat

They made two appearances as married Max and Kyle on Half and Half. As Big Dee Dee was in a play that Kyle was also in, and lil Dee Dee was trying to impress Max to get help in one of her court cases.

They canceled this show for f.r.i.e.n.d.s. it's the exact same premise. Maxine is Monica, Sinclair is Pheoby, Regine is Rachel, Overton and Kyle are Joey and Chandler that live next door

The 90’s what a time to be alive! I loved their chemistry! I thought they were dating on and off the show! It’s amazing how hairstyles circle back around. Many of the girls today are wearing Erika Alexander hairstyles! I hope to see them both more on television.

What friends tried to do but failed at
Friends clearly didn't fail at it. Until Big Bang Theory it was the most watched TV series out there, it took the crown from Seinfeld. I can understand if you didn't like Friends but lets not act like it was a flop series. Hell, Friends is probably in the top 3 of most quoted series of all time. Actually Friends only exists because of In Living Single, there is actually a whole story about it. The CEO of NBC at kind of screwed himself by saying that he wish he brought Living Single and like a year or so later they pumped out Friends. at the This has been talked about for quite some time. Several of the cast members have openly talked about it including Queen Latifah.
That Thursday night lineup was FLAWLESS - Martin, Living Single, and New York Undercover!

No she loved him remember I kinda don't like their relationship between them because each time they get back together romantically it's a secret and they were trying to hide their relationship between them. I know that you all are going to hate me for this but Kyle is right he needs a woman that's not ashamed to be in a relationship with Max was. He's looking for a woman that's not embarrassed to be seen with him or to let people know on how she truly feels about him Max was, he's looking for a woman that has his picture up Max didn't she enjoy having it up to play darts with it. If Max really did want Kyle in that way why did agree to go out with him? For the record it was too much back and forth between them and it wasn't good. Them kept on cracking on each other all the time wasn't really funny too me it might have been funny to you all but not to me. Another thing exspecialy at Overton and Sinclairs wedding she didn't want people to know her true feelings towards Kyle but he did exspecialy when he sang to her. Honestly in the words of Overton it's time they've start acting like children playing house and star acting like adults and like parents for crying out loud. At least Overton and Sinclair were the mature ones in their relationship between them they didn't try to hide their relationship or their feelings with each other.

Lol ok! I was ten. Didn’t know anything until I got older and started to watch it again.
I was just a baby when it came out 😫 so btw season 5 came out it was ending. I had two older sisters, so I was actually able to watch all the seasons on tv in 1997/1998.
I noticed how the two main couples in Living Single reflect each other physically and mentally. I refer to Overton and Sinclair alongside Kyle and Maxine.
With Overton and Sinclair, they always had a wanting to be together and an openness that many couples would envy. Overton and Sinclair are in love with each other, and nothing keeps them apart. They've always been for each other. And even should something come between them, they're quick to forgive and make up. Their love doesn't die - not even Overton's ex could break them up. They have a very pure love that solidifies them. It's what makes them one of my top favorite couples on television.
As to Kyle and Max, what ultimately draws them to the audience is how alike they are. Both Kyle and Max are very strong-willed and quick-witted characters, they work prestigious jobs (Kyle being a stockbroker and Max being a district attorney). For them, each time they come in contact, they get into a verbal match. Kyle and Max insult each other and call each other names. They are each other's match. But the case is that they're such strong dominant characters, that neither one is willing to admit that there's something about the other. Something that draws them to each other but also challenges them. It all adds to that "will they/won't they" dichotomy.
As to the physical aspect of the couples, two words: skin complexions. Overton and Sinclair are noticeably lighter in skin complexion than Kyle and Max. I can assume it wasn't intentional, but it's there. Almost a whole Ying-Yang binary with them in terms of complexion. It also reflects how their respective attractions are portrayed.

From a Shakespearean point of view, Maxine and Kyle are like the African American version of Benedick and Beatrice. Their back-and-forth sniping dialogue is much like the banter of the leading characters in Much Ado About Nothing.

This show and Martin were the shows I watched when I just came here in the US. I loved both shows. Although, I didn’t speak English well and still don’t, but somehow I picked up most of the jokes.
