When he said, the ship's cat was seen leaving the ship with her kittens, 😞
Most mariners would have seen that, as a BAD OMEN

The Str. PORTLAND was more a "run of the mill" steamboat than a "floating palace." Iron & steel hulled steamboats had been in service for years before the 1890 wooden hulled PORTLAND was built. The 1882 iron hulled Fall River Line Str. PILGRIM, with radial sidewheels, was about 100 feet longer, had 4 steel boilers & had sleeping accommodations for 1,200; the 1889 steel hulled Fall River Line Str. PURITAN, with feathering sidewheels, was about 130 feet longer, had 8 steel boilers & had sleeping accommodations for 1,400. The 1889 Str. CONNETICUT, with feathering sidewheels, was the last large wooden hulled steamboat built for Long Island Sound night service was 358 feet long, had 6 steel boilers [but her oscillating engine was prone to breakdowns], had sleeping accommodations for 700. The interior photograph you show at 7:19 is of the 1890 steel hulled Fall River Line Str. PLYMOUTH [the picture was taken in the 1920s] which had feathering sidewheels, had sleeping accommodations for 1,200, & had 8 boilers. At 366 feet, the Str. PLYMOUTH was considered one of the Fall River Line's small boats. All these other four steamboats had open gallery decks [as illustrated in the picture at 7:19]; the Str. PORTLAND didn't have such open space; their service speed was faster than the Str' PORTLAND's maximum. When built the PORTLAND was outmoded. The 1890 PORTLAND was built for approximately $250,000 & the 1889 PURITAN for $1,097,000.

This pompous, turgidly narrated and over dramatic and production is clearly not intended for experienced mariners, professional or otherwise. The infamous "Portland Gale" was meteorologically no different than any other winter, north Atlantic gale, other than the loss of life from the sinking of the steamer "Portland." Captain Blanchard's decision to sail despite abundant warnings provided in advance was a classic blunder with easily predictable results. The only thing unusual would have been for the "Portland" to have remained afloat.
