I pulled into a gas station in Beverly Hills once, many years ago. Beside me was a man filling a Rolls Royce. It was Telly. I walked over to shake his hand and tell him how much I enjoyed his acting, and he could not have been nicer or more of a gentleman. He talked with me well after his car was full. Nice man.
Now THATS the kind of stuff us commoners love to hear about someone! Humility, grace and class, and no big-timing the little people who paid their hard-earned money to give them the lifestyle they were privileged to have lived...I'm so glad he actually stood real, even after he attained Kojak Rolls Royce stature!
Thanks for sharing that. It inspired me to read his wikipedia page. I had no idea what an interesting guy he was. Greek by birth, learned english in elementary/middle school. Served in WWII, was injured and took a year to recover. Got into show business more or less by accident, filling in for a friend in a role that required the ability to deliver a foreign accent. Quite a guy.
Telly Savalas, his persona, is just overwhelming. Both American and Greek, both cosmopolitan and simple, macho and genuinely polite, cultured but unpretentious, he was a person to be remembered.
It's not dignity and integrity so much as all these guys actually knew each other. You watch a comedy central roast and none of that entire dais of comedians they use every single time has any personal connection to the person being roasted whatsoever.
In all these Don Rickles videos I have never seen anyone mention Dons laugh. It is the most sincere laugh I have ever heard. He loves being roasted as much he loves roasting other people. Wonderful man. Probably roasting god as I speak.
smoothest white man on TV back then. You knew he was a bad ass (and Yul Brynner) when as a little black kid back in the 70's and early 80's if you cut your hair too short, *the black kids* would be asking you if you thought your were Kojak. That's how smooth he was, a head of his time.
I loved just listening to Don cackle while Telly is speaking. You can tell he and Don were very good friends. I didn’t realize how close they were. You can tell Don really liked him. I have watched a lot of him over the years. You rarely hear him laugh that intensely for so long. It was nice to see their special connection.
Really loved those roasts, they all seemed to be enjoying themselves& their wisecracks to each other. Always great to see people laughing WITH each other.
+George Alderson Yes. I absolutely agree that the word "with" makes ALL the difference. Even the politically incorrect jabs at guests on these shows seemed tossed& received with humor, rather than with malice&hurt feelings.
They all created a class act of togetherness with their union of bantering that you can see is so real that it existed with them all the time. They all knew each other & where so close & a deeper family bond where they all actually helped one another. SUCH a beautiful bonding they all had & magically gelled. They bounced & sparked of each with such sharpness it so wonderful to see. Love it all, every last drop ❣️👏
Telly savalas a class act that hasn't been matched since and never will be.man had class he was stylish had a great voice and well spoken last real man they don't make them like telly anymore.crazy to think its been 27 years since you left us may you continue to rest.you may be gone but your always in our hearts and never will be forgotten.
Born & raised in exYu - he was right, because theres no comparation between 60v&70' US/NY/Hollywood "having fun" criteria and some poor, "red" country, still licking wounds from WWII with Tito riding on it's back. One thing I'm sure is that exYu was only "red" country (Kellys heroes made in 1970) with some freedom & nightlife. Telly if you ressurect soon, come again pls ;) - things have changed ;)
You could pretty much go through ALL of the Dean Martin Roasts, from their very early '70s beginnings until they had to end about 12-14 yrs later, and see only the pinnacle of so many entertainment greats that my generation was blessed to be able to laugh and cry to. Telly was one of those greats, as was Foster Brooks, and just about everyone you would see on that dais each time we were blessed with another roast to watch, and to get stomach pains from...From Ruth Buzzi beating the shit out of Sinatra with her purse, to Carlo Cappucino making us pee our pants in his white fedora...Just some truly amazing, never before seen, never to be seen again stuff...💝
"One of the few places in the world where you can still enjoy yourself without having a good time" I have never seen Don Rickles laugh so hard than I have watching his roast by Telly Savalas; pure comedy... pure love!
Telly was not just another pretty faced actor. He attended Columbia University. He was prominent at the VOA and later at ABC where he was an executive for special events and later an executive producer at ABC Sports where he gave Howard Cosell his first TV job.
I didn't thought he had it. Seemed so natural and cool, while simutaneously you could tell he respects Don. He said what he had to say in just a few words.
What is old that I've never seen his new to me. This is what I like about old entertainment I newly discovered. I thank God for it as it gives me plenty to watch & enjoy. Cause 97% of today's entertainment sux.
When I was in the US Navy we visited Spain Italy France and Greece. The Greeks were the most friendly, you probably know who were the most unfriendly or to be diplomatic I could say complicated.
I actually had the pleasure of playing blackjack with Mr Savalas at the resorts in Atlantic city back in the mid 80’s . He changed a 100$ in 5$ chips and played the stack on one hand. He won the hand and asked the dealer for 100$ in 5$ chips to be added on to his original hand thus betting 200$ on the hand. He won and asked the dealer to stack the winnings on another bet . Needless to say the column of 5$ chips was now a foot and a half high ! Telly was planning on adding until it “hit his chin” but unfortunately lost and gave the table a warm goodbye and a nice story to tell folks.

That's the classic genuine greek soul!!!
Wow. : )
Just curious, what was the gas price?
Cool 👌

Man, I miss actors like Telly Savalas. He was a class act.
one of the best...
@@eugeniosalexander he had this tough image on screen and yet he was a soft spoken and sweet guy.
I am 72 and I just now started watching Kojak about four months ago. I cannot go a day without watching it. Telly was a very good actor.
I agree with you bout Telly Savalas he was so great in the dirty dozen and Kelly's heros and of course Kojak he's such talent ,😉👍
Telly Savalas, his persona, is just overwhelming. Both American and Greek, both cosmopolitan and simple, macho and genuinely polite, cultured but unpretentious, he was a person to be remembered.
He has that self made man from New York vibe from back on the days. he knows what he wants and he gets it
That’s why I love these old roasts, the insults had a sense of dignity and integrity to them and not just straight shock value.
Tyler Tilwick thank goodness they had these on DVD, I ordered it immediately
The new roasts are absolute profanity laced garbage.
Also the roasts weren't so caught up on being politically correct too.
It's not dignity and integrity so much as all these guys actually knew each other. You watch a comedy central roast and none of that entire dais of comedians they use every single time has any personal connection to the person being roasted whatsoever.
No mention of genitalia, copulation, poop, pee, etc.
Super slick delivery from Telly Savalas. Witty, smooth and charming. What a legend.
Charming and talented greek american !! God bless
Absolutely!
Telly Savalas is from my neighborhood in NY..
Nice no kidding
A genuine Greek!
"...he's always right there when he needs me." Telly Savalas.
Don't we all have a friend like that? :)
Hell, my brothers are like that!
We all need a friend like that.
In all these Don Rickles videos I have never seen anyone mention Dons laugh. It is the most sincere laugh I have ever heard.
He loves being roasted as much he loves roasting other people.
Wonderful man.
Probably roasting god as I speak.
That was one of the best roast performances I’ve ever seen. Old Telly nailed it!
I love seeing Don laugh when people are tearing him down.
He can take it as well as dish it out. The King of Zing.
He's a hockey puck!!
The best comics, take it as well as they dish it out.
It's an art form. No higher love in an Irish pub than having the piss ripped out of you by your friends.
"I introduced him to Barbara....(turns to her) Barbara I'm sorry"
LOL
But my name is Babra xD
Shut up
Loved his voice. 😍
I love the New York accent.

Those guys were the best of the best of the best!
These roasts were some of the greatest shows to ever grace our screens. Miss those days so much.
The new ones are vulgar garbage.
Actually Telly was quite funny. I didn’t expect that.

Telly was actually kickass and made Don laugh out loud. Legend 😂👍🏽🙏🏽
Really loved those roasts, they all seemed to be enjoying themselves& their wisecracks to each other. Always great to see people laughing WITH each other.
WITH is the important word so often forgotten or left out by some people
+George Alderson Yes. I absolutely agree that the word "with" makes ALL the difference. Even the politically incorrect jabs at guests on these shows seemed tossed& received with humor, rather than with malice&hurt feelings.
R.I.P Telly Savallas I will miss you
We all will
The most unassuming roaster of all time and swung that right out of the park!
Telly killed it!
Who's cooler than Telly? Answer, no one.
#YulBrynner #winning
Some yugoslavians maybe :)
Steve McQueen, King of Cool
Correct.
So true
"presented him with a gift certificate... For 25 electric shock treatments"
Telly Savalas smooth, slick, and well timed. Oh and that voice, golden tonsils.
Making fun of each other was a class act and at the end, they all shook hands..
Lesson learned for 21st century crap going on !! 😎✌
Yep, just mean-spirited today, focusing on people's appearances etc.
TRUE, THE PROBLEM IS TOO MUCH FEMINISM AND ALLOWING FEMALES TO ATTAIN TOO MUCH CREATIVE CONTROL
Good humor was different then...like most things now !

I just read up on Telly and when he passed, Rickles was at his funeral. True friends to the end❤
so was Frank Sinatra
Rickles' loyalty as a friend was legendary.

"She ended up with this molar"
Don so enjoyed this segment.
His roast melted as fall off the bone BBQ. That was smooth!
watching the second season of KOJAK. great show. R.I.P. Lieutenant
SIKE01 by far, the absolute best cop show in the history of TV this side of Hill Street blues...... and maybe the old Hawaii Five-0
SIKE01 I was really disappointed that he didn't want to become chief of the precinct in the Bronx
Can’t get enough of these LEGENDS.❤️
Telly had a genuine Greek sense of humor! Making jokes without a slightest insult.
@depyk7989...I really enjoyed that funny scene with him on Capricorn One!....

Man, Telly Savalas had charisma.
Insane level of swagger and charisma.

Telly had a clear cut delivery and timing, something I'm sure he mastered while hanging out with his friends
How you see people differently . So funny and respectful.don loved it . it's such a feel good moment.i will not forget.
Telly Savalas, what amazing comic timing. Fantastic! Laugh-a-second. :)
Actually Telly was quite funny. I didn’t expect that.
They all use it......in varying degrees. You still have to deliver the lines with timing for it to be funny. Savalas did that here.
you can tell he was reading it because he couldn't help trying not to bust out laughing.
He had a great delivery of the jokes no matter what.

The Dean Martin shows and roasts made me laugh but it was funny every week
