    Thanks Greenpeace for pointing out the obvious- buying plastic bottles of shampoo and conditioner and food that is packaged in plastic is destroying the planet. Unilever also makes Pears soap-- which is great for washing hair. It comes in a paper box with a thin piece of cellophane around each bar. Conditioner is not needed when shampoos are not stripping the natural oils from the hair. People need to find non-plastic solutions and substitutions- there are many.

    Yes, plastic waste is a problem and everyone is at fault. Why the attack just on Dove. Same behavior coming from all multi-national manufacturers.
    People in markets like in the Philippines can't afford full-sized bottles of shampoos or body wash. They live by the day and they can only afford these budget sized plastic sachets that you see here floating as waste. It's a reality many first world comments here do not know. If you have the ability to boycott a company and have that option to choose responsible, you do not know how privileged you are. Unless some science finds a sustainable way to replace this, basic personal care we enjoy can't be a luxury for many who can't afford it.

The same can be said for the exploitation of animals and the brutal harm that causes to people, nature and the victims themselves - the animals killed and the wild animals it impacts too. Hello from the UK 🇬🇧...
    It's not just Dove, obviously.
    It's also many many many more very well known brands from all types of consumer goods who are just as guilty as the Dove brand......Beauty products/Make up/Food packaging/Household cleaning/Garden maintenance/Car maintenance/Sun protection products/Hair dye products/Shopping bags/Polystyrene packaging....
    The list just goes on and on...
    Yes we should all be horrified by this video (which was excellent by the way, very well produced by Greenpeace, thank you) but we should all be looking back at ourselves too, because every single one of us, from the children to the adults.
    We are all to blame for still buying the products, every single day, so we are all as guilty as the 'big rich' companies.
    We are all to blame for this dangerous and damaging situation.
    We are all to blame for harming our world, our oceans, our land, and our future on this beautiful planet 🌏
    There are now, some companies who are trying to address this issue, by producing more recyclable products where possible, which has to be the only way forward, for a species, us humans, to still be able to enjoy our consumerism habits.
    Also, and I'll end this rant here, by merely saying that when we look at home at all the products we already own, do we really need all of this stuff anyway? No, we don't. Nobody 'needs' forty lipsticks, 50 lotions, a cupboard full of cleaning products etc. etc. etc....
    I personally have just moved house and I was horrified ar my own fairly average load of unnecessary products, mostly bought on a whim by listening to or watching the adverts. I will use them, recycle the plastic containers where possible, and I won't be replacing them.
    Rant over 🌎 🗺 ❤

    • @greenpeaceuk
      @greenpeaceuk  4 дня назад +10

      Hi Katerina and thank you for watching our film!
      We are targeting Unilever specifically because they are one of the world's largest plastics polluters. Dove is one of their key brands.
      For decades Dove has told us all it’s a brand that cares about its impact, about confronting toxic beauty trends for women and girls, that it’s a brand we can trust. But behind its public image is a true story of real harm. That’s because Dove has been pumping out HUGE amounts of single use plastic, including billions of non-recyclable sachets every year. The plastic pollution this creates is fuelling a human and environmental crisis.
      This is a really important moment in the fight against plastic pollution. If industry has its way, plastic production could triple by 2050. Big brands and companies like Dove and their parent company Unilever are a big part of this. They have to change if we’re to turn the tide - the solution is for companies everywhere to stop producing anywhere near as much single use plastics in the first place.
      The moment to do that is now because the world is negotiating a Global Plastics Treaty www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/global-plastics-treaty-six-things-you-need-to-know/?SS, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get to grips with this crisis. Unilever lobbyists have huge sway at these talks - what they say and what they push for matters. To get a strong Global Plastics Treaty we need them to phase out single-use plastics from their own operations and push for the same at these talks.

    My problem is, that you choose Dove, a company that refrains from animal testing and most Dove products are certified as vegan by PETA, so I prefer this products because of this.
    I would be interested how many Greenpeace members are living vegan, because animal products have a heavy impact on climate and our future. Exactly. I don't want to abuse animals so I'm vegan. Unilever make things that people want to buy. Anyone against plastic packaging is free to not buy plastic items/items in plastic packaging. The issue mainly lies with the consumer, same as with animal agriculture. Don't like it? Don't buy it. You can buy shampoo bars, soap bars etc they usually come in a cardboard box. You can get refill bags for shampoo/shower gel (Radox do that) which uses less plastic than buying new bottles. You could even make your own stuff and I guess keep it in jars that you can reuse. But 99% of people have no principles because I'm the shop, they mainly/only look at price of an item or branding or whether it's on trend. Blame the consumer.

      Sachets have become ubiquitous in many low income communities and companies have been keen to justify them as essential tools for spreading access to hygiene and other products. But in many communities they’ve actually displaced old models of reuse where customers would typically collect small amounts of product in containers, generating far less waste. These systems have worked and can still work. They’re exactly the sort of model we need to see rolled out if we’re to tackle the plastics crisis.
      Greenpeace Philippines is running a project called “Kuha sa Tingi,” an initiative which is establishing community-based refill hubs in sari-sari stores (local convenience stores) to help address plastic pollution. The project seeks to reclaim ‘Tingi’ culture, which was prevalent long before sachets arrived and is defined by practical and sustainable practices like refilling reusable containers and purchasing only what you need.

There are lots of credible alternatives that consumers are already buying e.g. Little Soap Company, Friendly Soap, Eco Warrior, as well as a host of shops that sell dispensable shampoo, shower gel and cleaning products with non-polluting products.

    I've had some insight behind the corporate veil at said parent company. They are very concerned about being accused of "greenwashing" due to the Greenpeace and other campaigns. So much that they are often covert about geniune improvements around sustainability. There are some employees who are trying very hard to push a sustainable ethos within the company, but it's very difficult to push that agenda when it comes to P&Ls, and they are often not permitted to publicly comment, nor promote any of that good work. The company definitely has a serious corporate cultural problem in that regard. At the end of the day, some responsibility lies with consumers too. The best thing you can do is still to buy a bar of soap.

      @greenpeaceuk  5 дней назад +4

      Good question Helen!
That’s because Dove has been pumping out huge amounts of single use plastic. The inevitable plastic pollution this causes is fuelling a human and environmental crisis.
      This is a really important moment in the fight against plastic pollution. If industry has its way, plastic production could triple by 2050. Big brands and companies like Dove and their parent company Unilever are huge drivers of this. They have to change if we’re to turn the tide - the solution is for companies to stop producing anywhere near as much single use plastics in the first place.

    What is the answer please? I cannot afford to buy the more sustainable brands, i try to reuse and recycle as much as i can. Is metal better than plastic? EG cans of water instead of bottled water? Please answer 😢

    While the basic premise, stop plastic usage, is good, picking on a single company which increases women’s confidence in body image is reprehensible and leads me to believe that you have a specific aim to damage Unilever/Dove. The argument is anti plastic, not enforcing fashion’s body image. It is not the product as much as the packaging which is contrary to you title.
