Great looking trail. Gotta get to it soon. I only had one flat since my new Hyper E ride. It happen on The Gateway in Kings Mtn less than a mile from the trail head. Normally that wouldn't be so bad...But Ebikes are heavy. It was like walking a Lawn chair with non rolling wheels. Seems I hit a very sharp rock. Possibly an Arrowhead. That ripped a half an inch hole in my tire and tube. The only thing that saved me was the walker button . @15:53 - Seems all the trail I've been on have a lack bathroom a water fountains. @16:37 - After that first flat tire, I do carry an electric pump, at least one spare tube with a tire changing kit. It all fits in a small bag on my handlebar. @20:32 - I find watermelon great for eating after a long ride. Try some Pineapple too.

A mountain bikers trick to riding in the hot summer is to fill your camel back with ice. As far as tools go, I never seem to have the right tool to fix an issue so I don't really bring any tools but an Allen set and a kmc quick link. Tubeless tires with stans helps, I haven't had a flat in years.

I'm so glad you are safe. I really enjoy your videos. The cycling community is Charlotte is alive and well. I have ridden these trails several times and I bought my latest mountain bike from Giant University. The gear I take with me ranges from nothing, to lots of things depending on where I am going and if I am riding solo or as part of a group. Even if you don't know how to change a tube, if you have a spare with you, you might encounter someone who does. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your humor.
I would recommend attending one of the free maintenance clinics that local bike shops have from time to time. Bicycles with rim brakes and releasing the rear wheel from the chain and reinstalling the rear wheel are the most difficult part of repairing/replacing a tube. Once you have the wheel off replacing the tube is relatively simple. Village Wrench in Greenville has maintenance clinics often that are free. I’ve had to do the walk of shame or carry bicycles back to the car. Learning to repair a flat will prevent most walks of shame 😊. Always look forward to seeing your videos!!

Hate to say it but you could have repaired that flat with a patch kit and easily repaired that front tire flat with a new tube considering it was a front tire. Super easy to do especially with those quick releases in the front hub. Should always carrying a small pump and a spare tube in your bags. Light and compact but a life saver on the road especially long trail rides like you do. No mind you should learn how to actually change the tube or patch the tube and take wheels off which is easy to do and plenty of RUclips videos out there to show you. As this can easily happen on a super long ride we’re the car is 15 miles away. 😮 also you should have looked me up when in Charolette I was a bike mechanic for many years back on the day. Built wheels myself and know a lot. Next time you are in Charolette let me know be glad to train you how to fix flats the proper way so you can avoid huge hassle next time. It’s bound to happen again. Oh that was an old good sized thorn in the tire that was left in the tire and with time rolling on it it worked its way into the tube. Always look at tires before and during ride to insure nothing is stuck in the tire before it works itself through the tire and punctures the tube. Shoot me a message I will give you my phone number. I am in Indian land south Charolette.
Hmmm. Sounds complicated! I really do think that half of us are born mechanically inclined and half of us definitely are not. I’m in that latter half! But thanks for all the information and for the offer to help! 🙂
I'm 83 and have been riding since I was in 2nd grade. Then later when I got "serious" and started riding long trips with other riders I started carrying a spare tube a patch kit and a means of inflating the tire. Originally it was a small hand pump. I still have it but I rely in a CO2 inflater.
I don’t see trikes very often. Once in a blue moon (as my mom used to say). I’m actually based out of Greenville, South Carolina. I travel out from here.
Scott, since you take so well to suggestions and helpful information... while riding next to creeks you could carry a water filter and use the water source the Good Lord gave you. Just a thought 🤷♂️. Thanks for the great video and comic relief! 🥁
Yeah, somebody else said that as well. In fact, they said 30,000. I got that 6000 number from their website or from Wikipedia… But maybe that was just one of the smaller colleges within the university…
This looks to be a lovely trail. Not many people on the trails, did that have something to do with how hot it was or is that normal for these. As far as flats, I got a flat the very first trip from my neighborhood. Since then, I always have what I need on me to fix the tire and most other issues.
Not gonna pile on but you know what you have to do on the flat tire deal. Once you learn you’re going to realize how simple it is. And work to learn all the options for such a repair including using an energy bar wrapper, or dollar bill, to fix a hole in a tire. Yes, it’s a thing. And take care of yourself out there! 😊
One last thing. When I am in Charlotte ..Let say for a Doctor appointment , I'll take my bike in case I wanna ride a trail. My GPS can never tell me where the Trail head is located and I looking on Google earth as I'm typing this and still I don't see it.
I ride close to 225 miles a week any time the temperature gets above 80 I take 48oz of water with . For situations like that . I usually take a hit of water every fifteen minutes whether I need it or not when it’s warm out . By the time you’re feeling thirsty you have started to dehydrate.
You should have played "I got a flat in my tire and now my flat feet are tired" by Weird Al Yankovich. Seriously you should carry one of those water bottels with a built-in filter cartridge.
Oh NO!!! My hubby and I were out on our maiden voyage in Lake Wylie, SC with our ebikes and he got a flat tire, too! It was about a week and a half ago, riding on hot asphalt with no shade and he got a flat tire! Had to take it to a bike shop in Gastonia, NC. Now we are putting in that "FlatOut" Kevlar liquid in all our tires so it won't happen again! At least we were close to the car. What happened to you is dreadful. I hate that for you. Sorry. But God took you to a really cool bike shop and perhaps your video will cause others to become more prepared? Silver linings!!!!!
@@OffbeatDiscoveries I need to investigate that “flat out” liquid you’re talking about. I’m learning a lot from this comment section! Thanks for watching 😬
Don't leave the neighborhood without a spare tube, tire levers, and some means of inflation. Would you have driven your car to the trail without a spare tire? You're VERY lucky to have never previously had a puncture. In my 5+ decades of cycling, I've had MANY flats on the road/trail. Usually not big deal to swap the tube (once verifying the offending puncture item has been removed from the tire) and be on you way again in 10 minutes.

Thanks, man... yeah, I need to step it up. A cooler is a great suggestion!
I would have guessed you to be in your mid 50s. Stay healthy my friend.
Thanks! I do need to eat better. If I could travel back in time, I would make sure Little Debbie‘s parents never met. 😂
83! Congrats 🙂 Yeah, I need to do better!
Do you see any trikes on the trail? How close to Raleigh are you? I'd be coming from Williamsburg, Virginia.
That’s a good idea! Thanks 😬
Quick correction, UNC Charlotte averages 21,000 students a year, it is nearly the same size as UNC Chapel Hill and NC State
Yeah, somebody else said that as well. In fact, they said 30,000. I got that 6000 number from their website or from Wikipedia… But maybe that was just one of the smaller colleges within the university…
@@joyfultrailsYes, the 30,000 figure is correct.
@joyfultrails thanks for all the awesome videos, love this Regional aspect, and your trail videos are the best I've seen online
Is the out and back distance 20 miles, or 20 from end to end and 40 round trip?
I think that would be about 20 miles total.
long pants?
Yep. That's how I'm most comfortable. Plus...I need extra pockets for action cams and video gear!
There are alot more bike trails in Charlotte. I have routes that can connect many together. Let me know if you'd like the routes.
This looks to be a lovely trail. Not many people on the trails, did that have something to do with how hot it was or is that normal for these. As far as flats, I got a flat the very first trip from my neighborhood. Since then, I always have what I need on me to fix the tire and most other issues.
There were more people out in the morning, fewer as the day wore on.
If you say so… 😂
One last thing. When I am in Charlotte ..Let say for a Doctor appointment , I'll take my bike in case I wanna ride a trail. My GPS can never tell me where the Trail head is located and I looking on Google earth as I'm typing this and still I don't see it.
I used AllTrails and it sent me to an elementary school … and that’s where I accessed the Clarks Creek Greenway… And I just took it from there.
😂🤣😂
That's your highlight?
It’s what happened. Just keepin’ it real, bruh 😂
I carry a spare tube with me. Hope I never have to use it, but mine are fairly easy to change with no tools.
👍
@@davyhaynes6716 you’re not my daddy and you don’t tell me what to do. 😂 Just kidding! I know you’re right…
@@joyfultrails keep up the good videos buddy! If I run into you sitting trailside with a flat I'll definitely stop and help out-even if you pull for the wrong team 🙂 War Eagle.
@@davyhaynes6716 Oh, no! 🏈 Hey, I don’t talk about it but I do have 1 or 2 Auburn friends. 😂
Hey, I got to ride the Mendota trail this weekend out of Bristol, TN. If you haven't already ridden it, I recommend it. It's very beautiful. Would make a good video. Best regards my friend.
@@davyhaynes6716 I have already heard great things about that trail! Hoping to get to it in the Fall of this year. Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure I take a class on tire changing before I go... 😁
Where did you get 6,000 as the number for UNC Charlotte? Are you referring to a specific college within then university? The general student population is over 30,000.
Somewhere on the Internet… Either from Wikipedia or the college website itself. Maybe it was just one of the “colleges” within the university that has 6,000…?
@@joyfultrails has to be. I just retired from there. Saw it grow from about 18k to over 30k in my 25 years. I Enjoy your videos. My wife and I ride the New River trail a couple times per month. You might also check out the greenway in Mt Airy NC. It’s pretty nice, and you can visit the Andy Griffith related attractions around town.
@@jeffkimble8857 thanks for the tip… TAGS was always one of my favorite TV shows. Doesn’t get much better than that!
@@joyfultrailsI am a fan too! I was born in Mt Airy. Grew up just a couple miles from the real Mayberry (honest, there is a community of Mayberry), where Andy’s maternal grandparents lived.
@@jeffkimble8857 I’ll have to go.
Ok Scott. I really used to like your videos. Now I love them since you had the guts to call out false profit Furtick. Ok, enough about charlatans (get the pun?) Sure hated to see you get a flat, that is a cyclists worst nightmare (besides crashing). I'm glad you survived and I'm glad you found a cool Giant dealer to help you. I ride Giants. You should have checked out a nice Reign E+ e-mountain bike while you were there. Thanks and looking forward to your next adventure.
I see what you did there! 😂 Yeah… I’m generally not a fan of celebrity pastor culture and mega church culture…
Who rides in the heat with long pants, and no water? Not prepared for flat tire? City folks...
I always wear long pants - often with extra pockets for video accessories. Grown men in short pants look like little boys. 😂
I had a bottle full of water. I didn’t have a water *tank* … I had a bottle. But I drank it all. I think I may have come in contact with a water fountain, but it was turned off (probably as part of the hysterical overreaction to Covid and never turned back on again)…
@@joyfultrails i was in full lycra, two water bottles, and still dying. be safe out there! i recommend taking way more water, especially carrying all that gear. camelbak, and bring some kind of electrolytes to replenish lost salts
@@arachnophilia427 If I could look good in lycra I might be tempted to try it 😂
@@joyfultrails it exists for a reason! and basically nobody looks good in it.
Why in the world would you go riding and not bring a spare tube and tools when I ride even if it's a mile down the road I bring a small day backpack full of tools and tubes
Rookie mistake bro
Well, I’ve been riding bikes since I was a young child and I’m 62 now so definitely not a “rookie.” I’m a recreational cyclist, I just ride for fun and enjoyment. I don’t take it too seriously. But yeah, this is the first time I ever remember having a flat. You asked, “Why in the world would you…” Well, I explained why in the video. Thanks for watching.
@@joyfultrails I apologize for for for my comment didn't mean to sound like such an ahole have a great day and ride on bro
@@bustahip5677 No worries. You and the MANY others who say I should've been better prepared are not wrong! 😆
Where's your helmet? Come on Scott be smart and set a good example.
@@stevenhill7614 I need to do a video on this topic sometime this winter… 🤔
Nice video, ruined by his terrible humor. Riding all his life, not prepared for a flat? Needs alot of editing.
