    Scott, I love how you work those digs into your commentary every week. I agree because... you're right! My husband and I are an ebike riding couple who started riding in the spring to add something new and adventurous to our otherwise rather predictable lives. I recently sold my ebike and bought an etrike after wiping out on a trail that left me scraped and bruised. My determination to keep at it has paid off and we're having a lot of fun exploring new trails together. Your videos have interjected direction and interest into our biking plans and we can't wait till we hit the trail again. Thanks and keep the trails and humor coming.

      I'm a bike tourer, but I also do a ton of what Scott calls commuting and am an avid recreational cyclist. Personally, this is not my definition of Bike touring. IMHO, your definition is more of credit card touring, where you always stay in hotels / motels and don't carry a tent or cooking utensils.
      For me, bike touring is when you are completely self sufficient and can either camp or stay in a hotel / motel. Your bike has no suspension and has somewhat narrower tires, for riding on paved or gravel roads or easy dirt trails. You carry more and heavier gear than a bike packer and because of that, your gear is usually in side mounted panniers that offer more capacity, a front handlebar bag and a bag that goes on top of the rear rack.
      Bike packing is when your routes are primarily on mountain bike trails or gravel roads, quite often in the back country. As a result, the bike has at least front suspension forks and wider, knobbier tires. In order to get through the narrow, winding, steep trails, gear is kept to a minimum and is as lightweight as possible, therefore making them generally more expensive than what is typically used by bike tourers. Side panniers are not usually used, since they can catch on objects at the side of narrow trails. The majority of gear is kept in a bag mounted directly behind the saddle, in a frame bag mounted inside the triangle between the seat and head tubes, and in a handlebar bag that is usually larger than what is used by a bike tourer. Sometimes very small side-mounted bags or cages can be used to hold some gear or water.
      Of course, these definitions aren't hard and fast. I personally use a hybrid approach, where I ride a modified mountain bike with no suspension, have a large front handlebar bag, a half-sized frame bag and rear panniers with a bag on top of the rear rack. I mostly like to rough it, and try to camp as much as I can, but every week or so, will splurge on a motel room, for a break.
      Wow, that was way longer than I intended, but just wanted to share my perspective. To each their own... Get out and ride and have fun! :)

  • @dhotz8474
    @dhotz8474 3 месяца назад +2

    Funny when I call out "on you're left" a lot of them move to the left or just forget what's left and right. Having a car is great, but not every outing requires a motor vehicle. Saving gas for weekend destinations. No earbuds. Just enjoy the nuance that most people miss because they're in their death-mobile. I ride because I enjoy it, and because I'm not in a hurry to get old. My Dad used to bike everywhere. He inspired me, but missed the mark with my siblings. He kinda gave up on being healthy and now instead of enjoying his hard earned retirement he's dealing with weight related health issues. I don't want that for myself. I'm not a super athlete, but I'm mindful of my health. Biking helps me unplug and overcome various obstacles. As far as clothing I wear what's comfortable and functional. K.I.S.S.

    I believe the difference between bike packing and bike touring is a matter of balance my friend. They overlap in the middle and then divide toward the extremes. Bike packing is more off road and fewer nights where bike touring is more on road and longer trips. Of course both travel varied surfaces and distances thus the overlap. We seem to have similar riding styles although I do some bikepacking. Slow and observant is the way I like to travel as well. I like to call it leisure cycling. Lol Life's not about the destination, its about the journey. Safe travels and thanks.

  • @mikesmith3375

    I would describe bike packing as a self contained trip where you carry your own gear. Verses bike touring where you are more pampered with someone carrying your gear, staying in b&b's or hotels. Both could be short, medium or long trips.

    Personally, I think the difference between bikepacking and touring is a matter of off trail vs. on a road (or paved trail). Bikepackers carry their gear in packs that are designed to be "in-line" with the width of a bike. They can't afford to have packs hanging off either side of he bike and getting caught up on twigs, branches, briers, etc. Tourists are on roads....so they can make use of panniers.

    Great video Scott and I really couldn't agree more. These are often the exact things that go through my mind while i am out for a ride. Especially the sponge bath😂. I generally only see two kinds of trail users....those with smiles that say good morning back to me, and those miserable unhappy folks that you can't seem to get a smile from no matter how many mornings I might pass them. And i dont understand people that have to be entertained with something playing in their ears while enjoying (supposedly} the great outdoors. I ALWAYS have something playing while I'm riding. Sometimes it's music, sometimes it's a podcast, often a political commentary or a how-to series. Usually it's a football game with Tennessee beating Alabama in the final seconds (again)! The point is, this is all in my head, not in my ears! That great running commentary of mind clearing insights. Being alone with yourself, alone with your thoughts and idea, means being one with yourself, with others, and with God. It's the magic of cycling. Some seem to "get it", other spend a great deal of time looking for it. Thanks again for the video Scott, and in case you were wondering how a new video idea was received by your viewers.... I'll tell you after i think about it on my ride tomorrow morning!😊

    I agree with everything you said, I too am a gravel rider, preferring the solitude of an off road trail. I must comment on two of your observations. I too have noticed the E-biking couples, a recent encounter had a pair just like you described but with the addition of safari jackets festooned with whistles, compasses, and InReach Sat rescue devices. The sad part is they were going so fast the beautiful countryside must have been a blur to them. 2nd, my wife has a standing order that if she ever sees me in rubber pants, rainbow shirt and head stuffed in a bowling ball…….to just shoot me!

    I’ve been the athlete racer in my twenties, worked at a bike shop and the whole bit. Riding became a second job with sponsors and the pressure to do better. I quit riding completely for about five years. Now I’m 51 and still ride single track, but enjoy a good rail trail or green belt ride. I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy being on a bike again. Heck, I even pack a lunch most rides and take a good hour or more to just sit and enjoy the day. Our outlook changes I think as we “mature”. 😂
    As far as warning walkers I finally gave up. Most of them around here have earbuds crammed in their ears and won’t even hear a bell. I’ve had a couple get upset and I’ve pointed this out to them as I had attempted to alert them. Must be a certain form of entitlement, as they were walking on the left side of the path 😂

      @@ostekuste3646 Yep, I get that. A lot of them never even hear the warning.
