Wow this sounds spot on. It is hard to find such a tone in a processor but now a days its amazing tech catching up with the past genius guitarist sounds.
Holy crap! Great little machine. Brilliant video. You picked a great example to take you through all the possible settings you might use. Also threw in a couple of tricks/hacks to get the most out of its few limitations.
Please keep up the awesome work!! It's really hard to find videos that systematically teach you how to achieve tones :) subscribed! P.s would be good to have a John mayer tone breakdown too :) cheers!
man, I followed this video and am amazed by how a song I have played for 20 years sound so close to the way it was intended. it is impressive to recreate the sound they got on record in Studio, through a 200$ battery powered multi effects pedal . I would love to be able to do this with RUSH songs. Lifeson is a great example of studio created sound, in which as technology advanced and even sky rocketed in the 80s, Lifeson did as well. it is funny to think Alex had to borrow a Hi Watt and Strat to record 2112, because they were still broke!
Thanks for these videos. As a new GT1 owner it really helps me understand dissecting a song and building a tone. I am having trouble with the last step though as you don't explain setting up the expression pedal and CTL.
Hi Scott, You didn't need to hook up your laptop. In the description of the video there's a link to a blog article that explains all the settings in details and tell you how to set it all up. There's also a link in the article to download the patch for free at my website (with a free coupon code). So much joy in Jimi’s playing. Good work to you too, Joshua, love the playing and the decoding approach! On another note, lots of people say this processor sounds a bit too “digital”. If true, any tips on how you avoid that? - will be getting one soon. Thanks!
Most processors do. That's not a dig at people that like them or the processors themselves. Analog is the only way if you're a tone chaser. If you're looking to gig weddings and birthdays (again, nothing wrong with that at all) then the multi effects processor is the way to go 100%. The sound this guy is getting from that boss is so close to the og recording that I'm almost mad lol.
@@TheRhino2719 Agree with all that you said. Analog would have been ideal if it wasn’t for space issues and the neighbours. Anyway my main interest is home recording - direct into interface. So I went and bit a bigger bullet and bought the GX100. Early days but it’s definitely going to take some configuring to get the sounds I want. On the other hand it does seem to have all the necessary base tones.
@@accentontheoff Talk about bullets and biting them, I'm unfortunately in the latter group I mentioned, a tone chaser. I recently bought a 67-68 Arbiter Fuzz Face and a 67-68 Vox Clyde McCoy. I could've bought a used car. But with the way the economy is going I figured, get them now, hard assets, and I've got 2 bucket list items. Glad that GX100 is working for you though, the closest I've had are some modeling amps. And they are pretty xool but when I turned the vol up and really dug in I could hear the robotic sounds underlying every note, I couldn't deal with it.
Great breakdown ! Any chance something like this could be done for the ME-80. I've seen the patches you've made for the ME-80 but nothing as great as this Voodoo Chile patch. Also your website is down!
Hey question! When I have all pedals off , if I add the pitch shift it will keep the original pitch behind the new shift , so if I set it to -1 i can still hear the playing behind the E flat, it’s sounds almost like a harmonizor, how do you get it to just output the new pitch ?
Ricardo Figueroa hey Ricardo, from memory the Direct Level and Effect Level are on the next page in the pitch shift settings. Just turn down the direct level.
I'm having the same issue as Ricardo Figueroa even with the effect level at 100 and direct level at 0. I still hear the e tuning with the e-flat. Any other ideas on why ?
It's worth mentioning that the pitch shift works reasonably well for single strings but it isn't good enough to handle chords. Also, even with DM set to 0 I was hearing strangely discordant sounds. Then I figured out that I could actually hear my real strings just a little bit. I turned up my headphone level and voila ...
Can you change effects midway through a song, say you want a clean sound and wanna go to a distortion sound in the chorus or add delay and change back to clean?
Man this sold me. I went out and bought one of these totally satisfied but I can't figure out how you switched the wah on and off. If someone knows let me in on it. Great video though.
Thanks for the kind words Tim. In answer to your question, I assigned the CTL Pedal to do 2 functions with 1 press. It switches the Wah OFF and switches the Overdrive ON at the same time. You can read about that in the article that accompanies this video in the "Control Pedal Assign" section of the article. rolandcorp.com.au/blog/jimi-hendrix-voodoo-chile-slight-return-tone-dissected

Josh another Question since you tweaked the Master Setting knobs for this Tone does it affect all the patches in the Boss GT1 too? Your thoughts please... thanks bro
I didn’t see him messing with the master setting, at what point did you notice? I just had my unit about a month, and just started noticing that some of the patches were so loud, after dialing them in, or creating them. So I finally turned my amp down to like two, and adjusted all the levels of several patches I’m using. But once in a while, I’m still having to make adjustments from the ‘play screen.’ I’m having to turn the level and patch level down to30 on some, I may have messed with something too? I also had a question here, but it doesn’t look like many people are answering, ha ha. Maybe you’ll know. I was wondering how to set the CTL like he did-to turning on the overdrive, while turning off the wah. I just can’t figure that out. Thank you! 🤘🏻🎸
Hi Joshua, what a great sound. Just got my gt-1 last week, so I'm still testing and turning the knobs. This is still a bit challenging. The link to download the patch from your site doesn't work anymore. Is there another link to download the patch? Would really love using it.
I just bought the GT-1 and I can't for the life of me figure out how to add the wah effect and have it be controlled by the expression pedal. I found the "T. Wah" that automatically gives it a wah effect, but nothing I can control with my foot. What am I missing here?
I'm sure you have it figured out by now but just in case you haven't... - Press the "Memory / Edit" button to edit a patch - Use knob 1 to select the "PDL" entry (the position may vary depending on the patch, it's the second slot on the U01 "Hi Gain Stack" preset - Use knob 3 to choose set it to "On" (the "Pedal FX" LED next to the expression pedal will illuminate) - To change the wah type, press the "Enter" button with "PDL" selected, then use knob 1 to scroll through the various pedal effects (looks like there are 6 wah options and a whammy/pitch bend effect) Or, as I just discovered, you can just press the top of the pedal down harder like a traditional wah pedal to switch it on & off - I've only had my GT1 for a few hours so I'm still figuring it out! :D
Hi Tito, I've done that patch in the medley I play in the link below. And I have it available on my website www.guitarfxpatches.com/downloads/tag/boss-gt-1/
Nope. Exactly the same sound engine. Just buy the BOSS FS-6 foot switch to add two more stomp box control pedals. GT-100 just gives you these extra controls. I have the GT-1 with the FS-6 and my friend has the GT-100, absolutely no difference. In fact, I found his GT-100 to be not as easy to use as the GT-1. Hope that helps
I have already upgraded to the GT-100. It gives me a lot more of options. Since I don't gig anymore and just record at home, I like it that I can record dry and add effects later using the GT-100 as an interface. I also loved my now ex-GT-1, it was awesome, but the GT-100 fits my needs now. Thanks for the comment!

Its so tiny and the foot switches is limited to a patch up or down and how could i fit my 12 inch foot on a tiny exp pedal? so i ended up on the ME80 and the result was great.. tons of knob similar to a stomp boxes for easy dial settings if may not have a on board lcd screen to monitor your actual parameters but the overall capabilities is unlimited.
Hi, the sub delay was only used for a slap back delay effect so that won't change the tone. The pitch shift/minus 1 effect always changes the tone (like I say in the video). If you are running this direct into a PA or recording interface make sure you have LINE/PHONES as the setting (this turns on the speaker simulator). If you are running it into a guitar amp it will sound different because of whatever amp you are using too. Hope this helps. Josh.
